  • Tracking unique versions of files with hashes

    - by rwmnau
I'm going to be tracking different versions of potentially millions of different files, and my intent is to hash them to determine I've already seen that particular version of the file. Currently, I'm only using MD5 (the product is still in development, so it's never dealt with millions of files yet), which is clearly not long enough to avoid collisions. However, here's my question - Am I more likely to avoid collisions if I hash the file using two different methods and store both hashes (say, SHA1 and MD5), or if I pick a single, longer hash (like SHA256) and rely on that alone? I know option 1 has 288 hash bits and option 2 has only 256, but assume my two choices are the same total hash length. Since I'm dealing with potentially millions of files (and multiple versions of those files over time), I'd like to do what I can to avoid collisions. However, CPU time isn't (completely) free, so I'm interested in how the community feels about the tradeoff - is adding more bits to my hash proportionally more expensive to compute, and are there any advantages to multiple different hashes as opposed to a single, longer hash, given an equal number of bits in both solutions?

  • Detect marker with opencv and python

    - by Mitch
Hi im trying to detect a marker in a webcam video feed and overlay it with a 3d object - pretty much exactly like this: http://www.morethantechnical.com/2009/06/28/augmented-reality-with-nyartoolkit-opencv-opengl/ i know artoolkit is the best module for this, but i was hoping to just use opencv in python since i dont know nearly enough c/c++ to be able to use artoolkit. im hoping someone will be able to get me on the right track towards detecting the marker and determining its location and orientation etc since i have no idea how best to go about this or what functions i should be using thanks mitch

  • How to detect page zoom level in all modern browsers?

    - by understack
How can I detect page zoom level in all modern browsers? While this thread tells how to do it in IE7 and IE8, I can't find good solution for FF, Safari and Chrome. For FF one of the suggested solution FF stores page zoom level for future. So on first page load would I be able to get zoom level? Somewhere I read it works if you're changing zoom level on that page after its loaded. Is there a way to trap 'zoom' event? I need this because some of my calculations are based on no of pixels and they get changed on Zoom. Thanks. Modified sample given by tfl. This would alert different height based on zoom level. <html> <head> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3.1/jquery.min.js" type="text/javascript"/></script> <title></title> </head> <body> <div id="xy" style="border:1px solid #f00; width:100px;"> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. • In a digital photo, how can I detect if a mountain is obscured by clouds?

    - by Gavin Brock
The problem I have a collection of digital photos of a mountain in Japan. However the mountain is often obscured by clouds or fog. What techniques can I use to detect that the mountain is visible in the image? I am currently using Perl with the Imager module, but open to alternatives. All the images are taken from the exact same position - these are some samples. My naïve solution I started by taking several horizontal pixel samples of the mountain cone and comparing the brightness values to other samples from the sky. This worked well for differentiating good image 1 and bad image 2. However in the autumn it snowed and the mountain became brighter than the sky, like image 3, and my simple brightness test started to fail. Image 4 is an example of an edge case. I would classify this as a good image since some of the mountain is clearly visible. UPDATE 1 Thank you for the suggestions - I am happy you all vastly over-estimated my competence. Based on the answers, I have started trying the ImageMagick edge-detect transform, which gives me a much simpler image to analyze. convert sample.jpg -edge 1 edge.jpg I assume I should use some kind of masking to get rid of the trees and most of the clouds. Once I have the masked image, what is the best way to compare the similarity to a 'good' image? I guess the "compare" command suited for this job? How do I get a numeric 'similarity' value from this?

  • How do i handle jcupload and no flash?

    - by acidzombie24
I am using http://www.jcupload.com/ (basic) to upload files. I am considering having a friend write a more custom version or to do magic with ajax; so the solution should be able to work without that. With jcupload i include css, a script and write <div id="jcupload_content"></div> in my html and i am done. Problem is, with no flash i get an object box. Instead i would like is an iframe or a html form to upload the file. How do i do this? Should i detect flash from javascript and overload the div myself if no flash is available? How do i detect if flash is available? with jquery i know i can write something like $('#jcupload_content').innerHtml = blah; How do i handle the flash part?

  • RockBand-like voice app for PC/OSX / Real time pitch display software

    - by Sai Emrys
I played Rock Band 2 for the first time a little while ago (at Notacon). One thing I enjoyed about it was getting real-time feedback about my singing. I think it'd be neat to have something like that to run alongside my usual music, so that I can sing to random stuff in my music collection and know when I'm hitting the notes. Is there something like this for PC - ideally for OSX, and ideally that can just operate on arbitrary songs? I don't really care if it's game-like (though that's neat too); I just want it for the singing feedback. And I have no need for pitch correction - ideally what I'd see is just the pitches of the notes in the music and (on the same scale, differently displayed) of the live microphone. I tried to STFW but got no salient hits. :-/ Thanks!

  • What do the ddx and ddy values do in this AABB ray intersect algorithm?

    - by Paz
Does anyone know what the ddx and ddy values do in the AABB ray intersect algorithm? Taken from the following site http://www.blitzbasic.com/codearcs/codearcs.php?code=1029 (show below). Local txmin#,txmax#,tymin#,tymax# // rox, rdx are the ray origin on the x axis, and ray delta on the x axis ... y-axis is roy and rdy Local ddx# =1.0/(rox-rdx) Local ddy# =1.0/(roy-rdy) If ddx >= 0 txmin = (bminx - rox) * ddx txmax = (bmaxx - rox) * ddx Else txmin = (bmaxx - rox) * ddx txmax = (bminx - rox) * ddx EndIf If ddy >= 0 tymin = (bminy - roy) * ddy tymax = (bmaxy - roy) * ddy Else tymin = (bmaxy - roy) * ddy tymax = (bminy - roy) * ddy EndIf If ( (txmin > tymax) Or (tymin > txmax) ) Return 0 If (tymin > txmin) txmin = tymin If (tymax < txmax) txmax = tymax Local tzmin#,tzmax# Local ddz# =1.0/(roz-rdz) If ddz >= 0 tzmin = (bminz - roz) * ddz tzmax = (bmaxz - roz) * ddz Else tzmin = (bmaxz - roz) * ddz tzmax = (bminz - roz) * ddz EndIf If (txmin > tzmax) Or (tzmin > txmax) Return 0 Return 1

  • How to Detect IE Version on Vista and Above

    - by Charles Gargent
I would like to detect what version IE is running on Vista and above (I am developing on 7). I currently use WMI on XP, but it appears that this is no more. I have searched for an answer and so far I have found the following solutions: Using System.Windows.Forms WebBrowser wb = new WebBrowser; wb.Version; SELECT path, filename, extension, version FROM CIM_DataFile WHERE path="\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\" AND filename="iexplore" AND extension="exe" AND version>"8.0" And there is probably a way of looking up in the registry. Is there must a more elegant solution to this?

  • Best way to detect IronPython

    - by Adal
I need to write a module which will be used from both CPython and IronPython. What's the best way to detect IronPython, since I need a slightly different behaviour in that case? I noticed that sys.platform is "win32" on CPython, but "cli" on IronPython. Is there another preferred/standard way of detecting it?

  • detect us military email address

    - by John
Does anybody know which domains to search for (other than ".mil") to look for military addresses posting to a web form? Clarification: we're offering a discount to our customers, and we really only have time to cough up an email address regex which can fit into our existing system. This is on LAMP.

  • Detect WebKit Version 525 and Below With RegEx

    - by Jay
I'm no good at Regular Expressions, really! I would like to specifically detect WebKit browsers below version 525. I have a regular expression [/WebKit\/[\d.]+/.exec(navigator.appVersion)] that correctly returns WebKit/5….…, really, I'd like it to return only the version number, but if the browser isn't WebKit, return null, or better still 0. For example, if the browser was Trident, Presto or Gecko, return null, whereas if the browser is WebKit, return it's version number. To clarify, I would like the regular expression to check if navigator.appVersion contains WebKit and if it does not, return null, if it does, return the version number. I appreciate all your help! Please let's keep this focused, let's not flirt with jQuery or the sort, it's overkill in this scenario.

  • How to use Mobile Browser Definition File for a Phone vs SmartPhone seperation

    - by Denis Hoctor
Hi all, I'm looking to revamp our mobile site with something simple for phones below the ambiguous smart phone category and something a little more interesting for the phones above this category. I'm not interested in WAP/WML for this project. I'm building a ASP.Net 4 MCV 2 app and using MBDF What I'd like to know is how best to define this differentiation when using MBDF? Screen size, Javascript, SpportsTouchScreen etc. are all in MBDF along with others but I'm not sure where to draw the line and where the data is most accurate for the broad number of devices. What do those of you out there developing for this spread of hardware & software split on? Thanks, Denis P.S. I've done my research on xHTML MP1.0 - 1.2 and the best practises for implementation to ensure broad coverage but I don't want to restrict the newer phones out there to what the base line can see.

  • Problem trying to move a CCSprite circle in Cocos2d

    - by thyrgle
    Hi, So I am trying to move a CCSprite (which has the picture of a circle and is 32 by 32 pixels) with ccTouchesBegan. I have tried the following: -(void) ccTouchesBegan:(UITouch *)touch withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { CGPoint location = [touch locationInView:touch.view]; if ((location.x <= L1Circle1.position.x + 32 && location.x >= L1Circle2.position.x - 32) && (location.y <= L1Circle1.position.y + 32 || location.y >= L1Circle2.position.y - 32)) { L1Circle1.position = ccp(location.x, location.y); } } But, when I touch the screen in the simulator nothing happens... What am I doing wrong?

  • How can a program be detected as running?

    - by ryeguy
I have written a program that is sort of an unofficial, standalone plugin for an application. It allows customers to get a service that is a lower priced alternative then the vendor-owned one. My program is not illegal, against any kind of TOS, and is certainly not a virus, adware, or anything like that. That being said, the vendor of course is not happy about me taking his competition, and is trying to block my application from running. He has already tried some tactics to stop people from running my app alongside his. He makes it so if it is detected, his app throws a fake error. First, he checked to see if my program was running by looking for an open window with the right title. I countered this by randomizing the program title at startup. Next, he looked for the running process name. I countered this by making the app copy itself when it is started as [random string].exe and then running that. Anyways, my question is this: what else can he do to detect if my program running? I know that you can read window text (ie status bar, labels). I'm prepared to counter this by replacing the labels with images (ugh, any other way?). But what else is there? Can you detect what .dlls a program has loaded? If so, could this be solved by randomizing the dll names before loading them? I know that it's possible to get a program's signature in memory and track it that way (like a virus scanner), but the chances of him doing that probably aren't good because that sounds pretty advanced. Even though this is kinda crappy of him to be doing, its kind of fun. It's like a nerdy fist fight. EDIT: When I said it's a plugin, that is just the (incorrect) term I used. It's a standalone EXE. The "API" between my program and the other is mine is simply entering data into the controls (like textboxes, etc).

  • Overlapping labels in Qt fridge magnets example

    - by bullettime
I want to modify the fridge magnets example provided with Qt in a way that when I drag a label and drop it over another, it will push the label beneath the dragged label to the side, so they will never overlap one another. I've seen how collision is detected in the colliding mice example, where it uses a QGraphicsScene to draw the QGraphicsItem mice on, and scene()-collidingItems(this) to see which mice are colliding. The problem is that the fridge magnets example uses a class that inherits QWidget in place of QGraphicsScene, so there's no collidingItems() method to check when we have a collision. How do I go about doing that?

  • Determining which JavaScript/CSS browser features are required

    - by Alan Neal
My website uses a variety of technologies, such as JQuery, new CSS definitions (e.g., moz-selection, -webkit-user-select), etc. The site works perfectly with Google Chrome and Safari, but has some quirkiness in Firefox, IE, and some of the other browsers. I want to write a script to check for necessary browser features but, with several thousand lines of code and CSS definitions, I'm not certain which features I should be looking for. Is there some sort of online analysis (similar to how JSLint operates) that would tell me which features my script and CSS files need? Are there tools (like FireBug) that provide this info?

  • binary file formats: need for error correction?

    - by Jason S
I need to serialize some data in a binary format for efficiency (datalog where 10-100MB files are typical), and I'm working out the formatting details. I'm wondering if realistically I need to worry about file corruption / error correction / etc. What are circumstances where file corruption can happen? Should I be building robustness to corruption into my binary format? Or should I wrap my nonrobust-to-corruption stream of bytes with some kind of error correcting code? (any suggestions? I'm using Java) Or should I just not worry about this?
