  • HP Pavillion DV6500 recovery disk failure

    I recently attempted to re-install Windows Vista on an HP Pavillion DV6500 using the factory recovery DVD's, but encountered a strange problem. When the recovery disk attempted to reformat the hard disk, it failed at 22%. The error message provided was not very informative, just the error code "0x400110020000 1005". A google search turned up some people with a similar problem who asserted that HP has been know to ship corrupted recovery DVDs. The recovery disk did manage to reformat the the recovery partition before failing though, so recovering from the partition is no longer an option. It would be possible to reinstall from an off-the-shelf retail copy of Vista and then pull the drivers from HP's website, but I don't have access to a copy of Vista, and it would really be outrageous to have to purchase a new OS when I have a perfectly valid license already. Thought about biting the bullet and upgrading to Windows 7, but my understanding is that without Vista installed I'd be unable to use the upgrade version, and be forced to purchase the more expensive non-upgrade retail copy (!). Can anyone suggest a possible solution to this Catch-22? I've run out of ideas.

  • How to get a new-pssession in PowerShell to talk to my ICS-connected laptop for Remoting

    If I have my laptop on the LAN, then Powershell remoting works fine from my workstation to the laptop. However, the LAN is wireless, and so sometimes I will connect on a wire to my workstation. It has two ethernet ports so I have the secondary wired up to share to the laptop using Win7's Internet Connection Sharing. (Btw I know that avoiding ICS would solve the problem, but that's not an option right now.) So my question is: what magic registry bits or command line options do I need to flip to get remoting to work to my laptop through ICS? Here's what happens when I try it: new-pssession -computername 192.168.137.161 [192.168.137.161] Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cannot process the request. Default authentication may be used with an IP address under the following conditions: the transport is HTTPS or the destination is in the TrustedHosts list, and explicit credentials are provided.   • Use linefeed or carriage return in Subversion commit message from the command line

    I am using Subversion 1.6.6 on Ubuntu 10.04. I would like to insert a carriage return, or linefeed, or newline into my commit message so that when reading the log, the comments are formatted appropriately. It works fine when I use the system editor, or specify a file for the commit comment, but what I really want is to be able to do something like the following: svn ci -m "This is the first line\nThis is the second line" and have the comment presented as: This is the first line This is the second line My example does not work, it produces output: This is the first line\nThis is the second line So, is there a way to do this? If so, how?

    Hi guys, i like the post it sidebar app in windows 7, but it offers almost no features and so I'm looking for an alternative. Some of this features would be nice: - easy font formatting - better resizeable - an simple alert function It should be small and simple to use, and not bloated with tons of features which are not often neede.     I'm configuring a new desktop. I'm looking through all PCI Express 2.0 x16 video cards on NewEgg at the moment. All cards seem to be stating that they have SLI Support or CrossFireX support. I know that these 2 technologies enable you to connect more than one video card together to create more of a powerful video experience. These cards that have this support seem to be more expensive that other cards though. When I did a NewEgg search for cards that did NOT have these two supports, no matches came up for PCI Express 2.0 x16 (haven't checked other interfaces yet though). Can you run an SLI/CrossFireX card as a single card (and if you can is it efficient or even good?), or do you need to have more than one card to run them? Also, do they make cards without these two technologies anymore, and are they even cheaper at this point? I really have no need for SLI/CrossFireX at all, so I was wondering what I should look into. Do cards without this technology not run on the PCI Express 2.0 x16 interface? Thanks ahead of time for all your help.

  • Windows Explorer slow to open networked computer, fast to navigate once opened

    I open Windows Explorer and enter an IP for a computer on my home network (\\192.168.1.101). It takes 30 seconds or more to present a list of the shared folders. It does not appear to be an initial handshaking/authentication thing; even if I allow the view to load and then immediately load the same again, it is always slow. Once they appear, navigating through folders and opening files is fast. Also, navigating directly to a folder (\\192.168.1.101\My Music) is fast, even if it's the first connection since a restart. Using \\computerName instead of the IP address gives exactly the same results. Pings return in 1ms. net view \\computerName (or \ipAddress) returns the list of shared folders fast. This makes me suspect an Explorer issue rather than a network issue. Suspecting that the remote computer was being automatically indexed or something, I went into Tools-Folder Options-View and unchecked "Automatically search for network folders and printers," but that made no difference. De-selecting the "Folders" icon near the address bar makes no difference. Adding the IP address and computer name to the hosts file makes no difference. Both computers involved are laptops running Windows XP. Both have WiFi and cable adapters. Mine is not connected via cable. The result is the same whether the target is plugged in to the cable or not (although the IP address changes - 192.168.1.101 over cable, 192.168.1.103 over WiFi.) We are using DHCP assigned by the router.

  • Rewrite URL based off of IP on OpenWRT

    We are running OpenWRT on a WRT54GL. I have been looking for an answer to this, but I can't seem to figure out what to search for, if its possible, or what combination of programs to use. I want to be able to redirect a HTTP request from a WiFi device based off of their MAC address. This should all be transparent to the device. Basically we are trying to redirect any non-registered devices to a website to register the device (at this point, we would push a new config to the router that would allow this MAC address "full access"). Once a device is registered, it will be redirected to a transparent squid proxy server on another machine for caching/blocking certain sites. I looked at tinyproxy - popilo which redirects but I won't have the MAC address to know if its registered or not. Any help (google suggestions, programs, anything!) would be very much appreciated!

  • Photoshop CS6 Corrupted File recovery

    Last night I was working on a client application mock-up in photoshop, but was goin to take a break from my work so I saved the .PSD file on my internal HDD and put my computer into stand-by mode once the file had finished saving. Unfortunately my computer crashed while it was entering stand-by and shut itself down (photoshop was still open). I did not boot it again to make sure all my files were ok because they had already been saved, but today once I opened up the file again it was extremely corrupted and also completely un-editable (screenshot bellow). so what im asking is there any way to recover my work, or at least some of it? i have put in a good few days work on this project and would hate to have to restart it. the size of the file is 3070 KB, even though it reads as 712 KB in photoshop. i dont know if these file sizes are larger or either smaller than the original non-corrupted file's size, but considering all the layers in the file i suspect it was larger before it corrupted. im using windows XP professional 32bit SP3. both my OS and said .PSD file are located on the same internal HDD (74.4 GB). i do have an external HDD (1.5 TB) but i primarily only use it for movies music and tv shows. i dont know if it was plugged in t the time of me editing the document last, though, if it means anything. i have tried many image and PSd recovery softwares but none have returned any results that may help recover my work. edit: i tried using a photo reccovery software (odboso Photorecovery) that actually seems to recover the corrupted file in question judging by the size of the file, but i cannot recover it because of the licence fee. knowing that the file is still likely on my HDD, what location might it be located?

  • Re-Initialize RAID-0 in software after card failure

    I'm working on a Friend's WD MyBook "1TB" HDD that is not mounting. When I got in to it, I discovered that it is really 2 500GB HDD's set up as RAID-0. It appears that the drives themselves are fine, but that the logic board has failed. My questions is this: can I re-initialize the RAID-0 using software RAID so that I can recover the data to another drive? If so, how and which software RAID would be best (Preferably open source. any platform OK).

  • Issue with SSL using HAProxy and Nginx

    I'm building a highly available site using a multiple HAProxy load balancers, Nginx web serves, and MySQL servers. The site needs to be able to survive load balancer or web servers nodes going offline without any interruption of service to visitors. Currently, I have two boxes running HAProxy sharing a virtual IP using keepalived, which forward to two web servers running Nginx, which then tie into two MySQL boxes using MySQL replication and sharing a virtual IP using heartbeat. Everything is working correctly except for SSL traffic over HAProxy. I'm running version 1.5 dev12 with openssl support compiled in. When I try to navigate to the virtual IP for haproxy over https, I get the message: The plain HTTP request was sent to HTTPS port.   • How do I format a text file for IIS Mailroot Pickup so that it sends an e-mail with attachments?

    How do I need to format a text file so that it can be read by an SMTP service to send an e-mail that has an attachment? We have a server where we are using II6 SMTP to send mail from a Pickup folder. The goal is to drop a properly formatted text file into Mailroot\Pickup and then the file will be automatically processed and sent to the correct SMTP recipient. For simple files, this works correctly. Here's an example of a simple file that works (domain names changed): From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World! Test Body Of The E-mail When I drop a text file containing the above contents into the Mailroot\Pickup folder, it sends correctly. However, I haven't been able to figure out how to get an attachment to work. I found some material that explained how to encode an SMTP attachment and another tool for simple base64 encoding conversion. Using the information on those pages, I came up with the following text: From:[email protected] To:[email protected] Subject:Hello World!   • Can the Windows 8.1 update be applied without local terminal?

    It is possible to access the Windows Store from a remote desktop session and initiate the Windows 8.1 Update from the Windows Store, but the update hangs after the first reboot, likely waiting for the user to accept the license check. This leaves the computer unusable remotely. Is there a way to pre-accept the license terms so that the update can complete autonomously? Perhaps an UNATTEND.XML such as would be used for an unattended clean install? Failing that, is there a way to connect with remote desktop during that phase of the install (it appears to be GUI-mode setup running with the usual Windows kernel and full OS)?

    I've run into an issue with my KVM host which runs VMs on a LVM volume. As of last night the logical volumes are no longer seen as such (I can't create snapshots of them even though I have been for months now). I figure integrating the web component won't be too hard, but we have users which connect to the Database directly - currently using Windows Authentication. Is is possible to itegrate Computer Associates SiteMinder with SQL Server? With SSAS? If so, how much effort is involved?

  • Is it possible to provide a wired ethernet connection to external devices with an extra LAN card?

    I'm trying to provide a wired ethernet connection (wireless is not an option for this device) to a device (Samsung blu-ray player) without running Cat5 cable all over the home. I have a PC sitting next to this device and the PC is connected to the network via a wireless USB adapter. Is it possible to provide a wired connection from the PC to the wired device using the (currently unused) ethernet port in the back of the computer? Here's how I envision the device getting connected to the internet via my network: Linksys WRT54G v8 Wireless Router | ``--> Windows 7 PC connected via wireless | ``--> Blu-ray player connected via wired connection to the ethernet port on the PC. If so, how is this done? Will I need a crossover cable? What settings will I need to change in Windows 7 so that the device can connect? NOTE: I'm trying to avoid having to buy a wireless bridge and/or hacking a router with an open-source firmware to get this to work. See my previous question for more details.

  • Links won't open in Outlook

    About a week ago Chrome (my default browser) stopped working and I ended up reinstalling. After that, however, links in Outlook 2007, when clicked, no longer open. Instead, I get a warning that reads: General failure. The URL was: URL. Application not found. I presume that there is some MIME or file type association that needs to be configured at the OS level, but I've not had any luck so far. My operating system is Windows 7. Any ideas? EDIT #1 Wayne Johnston suggested I set Chrome as my default browser, but when I go to the Set Default Programs screen in Windows 7 (via Control Panel) I do not see Chrome in the list of programs. How do I get it to show up there?

  • Change Drobo directory permissions

    I have a Drobo unit that is connected via fire-wire to a Dell notebook. Using Ubuntu 12.04. I can not seem to change the permissions to allow all users to have read/write access to the drives. The unit is automatically mounting the volumes as my user using the system, so other applications can not access the device. I want to set up a Plex Media Server to stream music, etc... but it will not scan the drives since it can not access them. How can I change the permissions to allow everyone to read the volumes? IF I add them to the fstab as ntfs volumes, Ubuntu reports that they are not available during the boot up, likely due to the fire-wire not having found the drives yet. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Why is SMF manifest losing configuration data when exported on SmartOS?

    I'm running a server process under SMF (Server Management Facility) on Joyent's Base64 1.8.1 SmartOS image. For those not aqauinted with SmartOS, it is a cloud-based distribution of IllumOS with KVM. But essentially it is like Solaris and inherits from OpenSolaris. So even if you've not used SmartOS, I'm hoping to tap into some Solaris knowledge on ServerFault. My issue is that I want an unprivileged user to be allowed to restart a service that they own. I have worked out how to do that by using RBAC and adding an authorisation to /etc/security/auth_attr and associating that authorisation with my user. I then added the following to my SMF manifest for the service: <property_group name='general' type='framework'> <!-- Allow to be restarted--> <propval name='action_authorization' type='astring' value='solaris.smf.manage.my-server-process' /> <!-- Allow to be started and stopped --> <propval name='value_authorization' type='astring' value='solaris.smf.manage.my-server-process' /> </property_group> And this works well when imported. My unprivileged user is allowed to restart, start and stop its own server process (this is for automated code deployments). However, if I export the SMF manifest, this configuration data is gone... all I see in that section is this: <property_group name='general' type='framework'> <property name='action_authorization' type='astring'/> <property name='value_authorization' type='astring'/> </property_group> Does anybody know why this is happening? Is my syntax wrong, or am I simply not using SMF incorrectly?

  • I'm receiving an SSL error in various browsers, but I can't find non-SSL content

    I'm receiving an error with my SSL connection. Using google chrome I see the following error: Your connection is encrypted with 128-bit encryption ... however this page includes other resources which are not secure I've scoured the source code, scripts and rendered code in the browser but cannot find where an http:// call is made. I've also used Fiddler2 to examine the traffic and everything is coming across via HTTPS. Has anyone run into this issue before and if so how did you go about finding the culprit. The website is running ASP.NET MVC3 in C#. The page in question is a simple payment page. The only external call is the google analytics tracking code. The page appears to load correctly, all images and scripts are in place.
