  • Character set issues with Oracle Gateways, SQL Server, and Application Express

    - by Brian Deterling
I am migrating data from a Oracle on VMS that accesses data on SQL Server using heterogeneous services (over ODBC) to Oracle on AIX accessing the SQL Server via Oracle Gateways (dg4msql). The Oracle VMS database used the WE8ISO8859P1 character set. The AIX database uses WE8MSWIN1252. The SQL Server database uses "Latin1-General, case-insensitive, accent-sensitive, kanatype-insensitive, width-insensitive for Unicode Data, SQL Server Sort Order 52 on Code Page 1252 for non-Unicode Data" according to sp_helpsort. The SQL Server databases uses nchar/nvarchar or all string columns. In Application Express, extra characters are appearing in some cases, for example 123 shows up as %001%002%003. In sqlplus, things look ok but if I use Oracle functions like initcap, I see what appear as spaces between each letter of a string when I query the sql server database (using a database link). This did not occur under the old configuration. I'm assuming the issue is that an nchar has extra bytes in it and the character set in Oracle can't convert it. It appears that the ODBC solution didn't support nchars so must have just cast them back to char and they showed up ok. I only need to view the sql server data so I'm open to any solution such as casting, but I haven't found anything that works. Any ideas on how to deal with this? Should I be using a different character set in Oracle and if so, does that apply to all schemas since I only care about one of them.

  • How does the height of a UITableViewCell get set

    - by Brian
I know that when UIKit renders a cell, it uses tableView:heightForRowAtIndexPath: to calculate the height. My question is, how and when does that get set on the actual UITableViewCell. I want to build dynamic cells and will need to calculate the placement of text within the cell. I believe I can just use self.bounds and self.frame - I was just curious about at what point those are set - even with the use of dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier. Thanks.

  • MediaWiki styling for iPhone

    - by Brian Ashe
When you visit en.wikipedia.org with an iPhone you are forwarded to en.m.wikipedia.org which is formatted beautifully for the device. I have MediaWiki on my own server and I'd love to have this formatting available when I visit my site with my iPhone. Is there an easy way to enable this? I've gotten as far as www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:$wgHandheldForIPhone and http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:MobileSkin but nothing is jumping out at me.

  • Only first UIView added view addSubview shows correct orientation

    - by Brian Underwood
I've got three ViewControllers set up to handle three views. The problem that I'm having is that in the simulator the orientation is LandscapeRight (which is what I want), and the first view shows up correctly in that landscape view, but when I move onto the second and third views, they show up rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise with the upper-left corner of the view in the lower left corner of the phone's screen. I've been trying to debug this for a few days and the closest that I've gotten to a clue is tracing it the following way: The following is in my app delegate's applicationDidFinishLaunching: NSLog(@"1"); [window addSubview:welcomeController.view]; NSLog(@"2"); [window addSubview:goalController.view]; NSLog(@"3"); [window addSubview:planningController.view]; NSLog(@"4"); [window bringSubviewToFront:welcomeController.view]; NSLog(@"5"); Each of my ViewControllers implement something similar to the following (the only change being the controller's name switched out in the string passed to NSLog): - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation { // Return YES for supported orientations NSLog(@"called for WelcomeController"); return (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight); } With that, I get the following output on the Console: a called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController called for WelcomeController 2 called for GoalController 3 called for PlanningController 4 5 I find it interesting that shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation is called 4 times for the first view that's added, while the other two only get called once. I expect that this is probably because it's got to do some setup at first (and I believe that the simulator starts off in portrait mode, so it's might be calling it while doing the rotation), but I find the correlation a bit suspicious. I've switched the order around so that the addSubview is called for the goalController first and the welcomeController second. In this case, it's the goalController which displays in the correct landscape orientation (it's normally the welcome controller). This would seem to eliminate my XIB files and the ViewControllers themselves. I'm not sure why the first view where addSubview is called is special. I also tried using insertSubview at index 0 with the same results.

  • Comparison of ASP.Net Reporting Solutions

    - by Brian MacKay
This week my team spent way too much time trying to do simple things in reporting services, and I've decided to start evaluating other options. I know there are some good options out there now that aren't too expensive. I've heard that Telerik, ActiveReports, and a few others are widely used. I was hoping to get some first hand accounts regarding reporting tools that you've used. Specifically, I definitely want to hear your thoughts about: Pain points and gotchas you ran into. Ease of use for report design. It's a little bizarre to me that Access still seems to hold the throne in this area! What's your favorite tool? Anything I've missed that seems important to you. Thanks a lot!

  • PDFView printWithInfo:autoRotate: fails

    - by Brian Postow
I'm trying to print a PDFDocument that I am constructing from a series of images. In case it matters, I'm doing all of this from within a Mozilla plugin. I create the PDFDocument, and put it into a PDFView, then I call [printView printWithInfo: [NSPrintInfo sharedPrintInfo] autoRotate: YES]; The print dialog comes up (as a separate window, instead of panel. I assume that that comes from being inside a mozilla window, so I wasn't too worried about it. The dialog shows my document, and I can page through it correctly, and everything looks good. However, when I hit "Print" the dropdown with "Layout" etc becomes empty, and the view under that becomes empty. The window doesn't disappear, and the document doesn't print. Hitting Cancel does exactly the same thing. The only thing I can do then is force-quit Mozillla. I based the program off of PDFKitLinker2 from the apple dev site, and that program works. But I can't see any significant differences between it and my version. Any suggestions on where to look? thanks. EDIT: Yes, I know that this is pretty much an exact duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2058501/printing-off-screen-pdfviews but that never got a sufficient answer... (And I didn't notice it until just now...)

  • CSS Position Absolute constant top margin

    - by Brian
This question sounds simple but I'm an expert with CSS and I'm thinking it's impossible (a RARE thing). Is it possible to use CSS to give a a page a constant top margin if that div has no background (e.g. you can see through it)? Basically, I want the background image to be visible in the top 100px of a site, so that even when scrolling down, that top-margin remains in place. You can look at some live code here: http://cl.ly/40oY Here's a little infographic of what I'm attempting to do: http://cl.ly/40xt Thanks!

  • HtmlForm.Action and .Net Framework 2.0/3.5 Query

    - by Brian
Disappointingly, the members page for HtmlForm 2.0 is missing... My research seems to indicate that HtmlForm.Action is a property that was added in .Net Framework 3.5. However, I'm using VS2005 and my reference to System.Web (the namespace HtmlForm is under) is to a .Net Framework 2.0 runtime version. Further, my IIS status information also indicates I am using .Net Framework 2.0, when I force an error on my local IIS and read it. Despite this, I am able to use form1.Action successfully...but only on my local IIS. When I try it on vms and external servers, I get [MissingMethodException: Method not found: 'System.String System.Web.UI.HtmlControls.HtmlForm.get_Action()'.] errors. So, my question: 1) Why does it work on my local IIS? Does the fact that I have the 3.5 framework installed make a difference, here? 2) Why does it not work on other IIS? (I think this is because it's not part of .Net 2.0). I guess I just figure that if something is running on .Net Framework 2.0, the presence of 3.5 should not make a difference. Or maybe there's some other cause for these results.

  • Calling a method with an arg of Class<T> where T is a parameterized type

    - by Brian Ferris
I'm attempting to call a constructor method that looks like: public static SomeWrapper<T> method(Class<T> arg); When T is an unparameterized type like String or Integer, calling is straightforward: SomeWrapper<String> wrapper = method(String.class); Things get tricky when T is a parameterized type like List<String>. The following is not valid: SomeWrapper<List<String>> wrapper = method(List<String>.class); About the only thing I could come up with is: List<String> o = new ArrayList<String>(); Class<List<String>> c = (Class<List<String>>) o.getClass(); SomeWrapper<List<String>> wrapper = method(c); Surely there is an easier way that doesn't require the construction of an additional object?

  • Python-daemon doesn't kill its kids

    - by Brian M. Hunt
When using python-daemon, I'm creating subprocesses likeso: import multiprocessing class Worker(multiprocessing.Process): def __init__(self, queue): self.queue = queue # we wait for things from this in Worker.run() ... q = multiprocessing.Queue() with daemon.DaemonContext(): for i in xrange(3): Worker(q) while True: # let the Workers do their thing q.put(_something_we_wait_for()) When I kill the parent daemonic process (i.e. not a Worker) with a Ctrl-C or SIGTERM, etc., the children don't die. How does one kill the kids? My first thought is to use atexit to kill all the workers, likeso: with daemon.DaemonContext(): workers = list() for i in xrange(3): workers.append(Worker(q)) @atexit.register def kill_the_children(): for w in workers: w.terminate() while True: # let the Workers do their thing q.put(_something_we_wait_for()) However, the children of daemons are tricky things to handle, and I'd be obliged for thoughts and input on how this ought to be done. Thank you.

  • Paypal subscriptions IPN - problem with users subscribing multiple times

    - by Brian Armstrong
I'm using paypal subscriptions and the instant payment notification (IPN) to handle subscribers on my site. For the most part it works well but there is one occasional problem I've encountered. Usually if a user cancels their subscription, I wait for the "end of term" (subscr_eot) notification before disabling access to my site. So if they prepay for the whole month, and then cancel right away, they still have access for the rest of the month (as it should be). But some users are having this problem where they: Cancel their subscription Before the "end of term" is reached they decide to re-subscribe When the "end of term" is reached for their first subscription, my app receives the notification and fires off an email to the user with something like "your account has been disabled, if you ever want to sign up again, you can re-subscribe by clicking here". This confuses them because they are thinking...that's weird, I thought I subscribed like a week ago (and they did). So they go subscribe AGAIN. Now they have two concurrent running subscriptions to my site and I get a support email in a month or two ("wtf you billed me twice this month jerk!!") So I haven't found a good way to fix this. I guess the best solution would be to do an additional API call when the "end of term" notification is received which asks paypal "hey did this person already re-subscribe?". If so then no need to fire off that email. But I haven't seen any way to do this API call yet. Another solution is to disable their account immediately when they cancel (the "subscr_cancel" notification) but then I get different angry support emails "hey I prepaid for the whole month why was my account disabled already!!". Anyone else solved this?

  • CSS - 100% Height Layout with Variable Height Header

    - by Brian D.
The layout I want to achieve is pretty simple. I want a 100% height layout with a header, and below the header I will have a side bar for navigation and then the content area beside the navigation bar (2-column with header). I can easily do this if I give the header a specified height but I want the header to just take up as much room as is needed. Does anyone know how to do this? Is it possible without knowing the height of the header? Thanks for any help.

After the daylight savings take effect the hours are being displayed an hour out of phase. The problem appears to be with the plugins parsing function. Can someone please provide me with the funciton to parse a UTC string which includes the 'Z' demonination into a local date time for display?

  • Get signal names from numbers in Python

    - by Brian M. Hunt
Is there a way to map a signal number (e.g. signal.SIGINT) to its respective name (i.e. "SIGINT")? I'd like to be able to print the name of a signal in the log when I receive it, however I cannot find a map from signal numbers to names in Python, i.e. import signal def signal_handler(signum, frame): logging.debug("Received signal (%s)" % sig_names[signum]) signal.signal(signal.SIGINT, signal_handler) For some dictionary sig_names, so when the process receives SIGINT it prints: Received signal (SIGINT) Thank you.

  • MSBuild Validating Properties

    - by Brian Gillespie
    I'm working on a reusable MSBuild Target that will be consumed by several other tasks. This target requires that several properties be defined. What's the best way to validate that properties are defined, throwing an Error if the are not? Two attempts that I almost like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Project ToolsVersion="3.5" DefaultTarget="Release" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <Target Name="Release"> <Error Text="Property PropA required" Condition="'$(PropA)' == ''"/> <Error Text="Property PropB required" Condition="'$(PropB)' == ''"/> <!-- The body of the task --> </Target> </Project> Here's an attempt at batching. It's ugly because of the extra "Name" parameter. Is it possible to use the Include attribute instead? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Project ToolsVersion="3.5" DefaultTarget="Release" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003"> <Target Name="Release"> <!-- MSBuild BuildInParallel="true" Projects="@(ProjectsToBuild)"/ --> <ItemGroup> <RequiredProperty Include="PropA"><Name>PropA</Name></RequiredProperty> <RequiredProperty Include="PropB"><Name>PropB</Name></RequiredProperty> <RequiredProperty Include="PropC"><Name>PropC</Name></RequiredProperty> </ItemGroup> <Error Text="Property %(RequiredProperty.Name) required" Condition="'$(%(RequiredProperty.Name))' == ''" /> </Target> </Project>

  • How to add a hyperlink column to a TcxGrid (Developer express grid)

    - by Brian Frost
Hi In Delphi I've managed (!) to add a column to a TcxGrid table view that appears as a hyperlink (instead of a simple string). To do this, you simply edit 'properties' of the column and choose 'hyperlink'. The cell now shows a hyperlink style (underlined) but I canot for the life of me see how to: Get the cursor to change to the 'hand' when over the link. Add an event that is fired when I click the link. Can anyone help? Thanks.

  • Usng Rails ActiveRecord relationships

    - by Brian Goff
I'm a newbie programmer, been doing shell scripting for years but have recently taken on OOP programming using Ruby and am creating a Rails application. I'm having a hard time getting my head wrapped around how to use my defined model relationships. I've tried searching Google, but all I can come up with are basically cheat sheets for what has_many, belongs_to, etc all mean. This stuff is easy to define & understand, especially since I've done a lot of work directly with SQL. What I don't understand is how to actually used those defined relationships. In my case I have 3 models: Locations Hosts Services Relationships (not actual code, just for shortening it): Services belongs_to :hosts Hosts has_many :services belongs_to :locations Locations has_many :hosts In this case I want to be able to display a column from Locations while working with Services. In SQL this is a simple join, but I want to do it the Rails/Ruby way, and also not use SQL in my code or redefine my joins.

  • OpenGL es 2.0 Read depth buffer

    - by Brian
Hi! As far as i know, we can't read the Z(depth) value in OpenGL ES 2.0. So I am wondering how we can get the 3D world coordinates from a point on the 2D screen? Actually I have some random thoughts might work. Since we can read the RGBA value by using glReadPixels, how about we duplicate the depth buffer and store it in a color buffer(say ColorforDepth). Of course there need to be some nice convention so that we don't lose any information of the depth buffer. And then when we need a point's world coordinates , we attach this ColorforDepth color buffer to the framebuffer and then render it. So when we use glReadPixels to read the depth information at this frame. However, this will lead to 1 frame flash since the colorbuffer is a weird buffer translated from the depth buffer. I am still wondering if there is some standard way to get the depth in OpenGL es 2.0? Thx in advance!:)

  • Drawing selected state on custom UITableViewCell

    - by Brian
So I have a customer UITableViewCell whose whole display in drawn in drawRect. When it draws it creates CGLayers so that it can reuse certain pieces when something is changed. I have changed my UITableViewCellSelectionStyle to None because I don't want the default selected view to cover my drawing. So I call setNeedsDisplay in setSelected:animated: for my cell. But by the time drawRect is called, setSelected:animated: has already been called again to deselect the cell. In my table view controller in didSelectRowAtIndexPath I call deselectRowAtIndexPath as Apple advises. Any ideas? Thanks.

  • SQLServer:Namespaces preventing access to query data

    - by Brian
Hi A beginners question, hopefully easily answered. I've got an xml file I want to load into SQLServer 2008 and extract the useful informaiton. I'm starting simple and just trying to extract the name (\gpx\name). The code I have is: DECLARE @x xml; SELECT @x = xCol.BulkColumn FROM OPENROWSET (BULK 'C:\Data\EM.gpx', SINGLE_BLOB) AS xCol; -- confirm the xml data is in @x select @x as XML_Data -- try and get the name of the gpx section SELECT c.value('name[1]', 'varchar(200)') as Name from @x.nodes('gpx') x(c) Below is a heavily shortened version of the xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <gpx xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" version="1.0" creator="Groundspeak Pocket Query" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0 http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0/gpx.xsd http://www.groundspeak.com/cache/1/0 http://www.groundspeak.com/cache/1/0/cache.xsd" xmlns="http://www.topografix.com/GPX/1/0"> <name>EM</name> <desc>Geocache file generated by Groundspeak</desc> <author>Groundspeak</author> <email>[email protected]</email> <time>2010-03-24T14:01:36.4931342Z</time> <keywords>cache, geocache, groundspeak</keywords> <wpt lat="51.2586" lon="-2.213067"> <time>2008-03-30T07:00:00Z</time> <name>GC1APHM</name> <desc>Sandman's Noble Hoard by Sandman1973, Unknown Cache (2/3)</desc> <groundspeak:cache id="832000" available="True" archived="False" xmlns:groundspeak="http://www.groundspeak.com/cache/1/0"> <groundspeak:name>Sandman's Noble Hoard</groundspeak:name> <groundspeak:placed_by>Sandman1973</groundspeak:placed_by> </groundspeak:cache> </wpt> </gpx> If the first two lines are replaced with just: <gpx> the above example works correctly, however I then can't access groundspeak:name (/gpx/wpt/groundspeak:cache/groundspeak:name), so my guess its a problem with the namespace. Any help would be appriciated.

  • Can I force MySql table name case sensitivity on file systems that aren't case sensitive

    - by Brian Deacon
So our target environment is linux, making mysql case-sensitive by default. I am aware that we can make our linux environment not case sensitive with the lower_case_table_names variable, but we would rather not. We have a few times been bitten with a case mismatch because our dev rigs are OSX, and mysql is not case sensitive there. Is there a way we can force table names to be case sensitive on my OSX install of MySql (5.0.83 if that matters) so that we catch a table name case mismatch prior to deploying to the integration servers running on linux?

  • Javascript upload in spite of same origin policy

    - by Brian M. Hunt
Can one upload files to a domain other than the domain a script originates from? For example, suppose you're hosting files on www.example.com, and you want to upload files to uploads.example.com, would the following script violate the same origin policy (using uploadify): <!-- from http://www.example.com/upload.html --> <input id="fileInput" name="fileInput" type="file" /> <script type="text/javascript">// <![CDATA[ $(document).ready(function() { $('#fileInput').uploadify({ 'uploader' : 'uploadify.swf', 'script' : 'http://upload.example.com/uploadify.php', 'cancelImg' : 'cancel.png', 'auto' : true, 'folder' : '/uploads' }); }); // ]]></script> I haven't seen a clear reference on the same origin policy that would indicate one-way or the other whether the this would be an issue with any browsers.
