• Changing Platform

  From time to time a developer makes a break from their platform of choice (.NET, Java, VB, Access, COBOL) and moves to perceived greener pastures. Zed Shaw did it, jumping from Ruby to Python, and Mike Gunderloy went from .NET to Rails. But it can be difficult to change platform. My clients don’t come to me looking for  a software developer, they come looking for a .NET developer. This is a tragic side effect of big software companies marketing. If your village is under attack by bandits, would you turn away the first seven samurai who offered to help because you didn’t like their swords? What matters is how effectively they can defend your village. You should not tell your carpenter what sort of hammer to use and you should not tell your software developer what platform to use.

• Does e-commerce platform matter for branding

  The place I work is now looking into developing a new e-commerce site on the Magento platform. Magento will fill all of our needs. I was just wondering if it is in anyway unprofessional doing it this way (Impression is something we are really worried about), will people who visit the site look at our business different knowing we used Magento or any other e-commerce platform. There are ways to find out. I use Chrome Sniffer to find out what platforms are used to develop each site, there are other tools available for different browsers. Bottom-line: Will an e-commerce platform affect the trust in my brand?

• DISA Cross Domain Enterprise Solutions on the NetBeans Platform

  Bray 2.0 is a tool based on the NetBeans Platform that assists in creating valid Data Flow Configuration (DFC) files. The DFC Specification was developed to provide a standardized way for defining, validating, and approving data flows for use on cross-domain guarding solutions. A DFC document specifies key entities such as security domains, guards that facilitate data between security domains, data flows that describe how data travels between security domains, filters that transform and validate the data and more. The DFC Specification and Bray were developed in support of the US Department of Defense. Bray 2.0 marks the first release of Bray on the NetBeans Platform and utilizes a number of features that are core to the NetBeans Platform: Modular plugability. Bray consumers can integrate their own tools, file types, and more into the product with relative ease. Robust UI. The NetBeans Platform intuitive UI makes it easy to access and manipulate multiple aspects of a DFC. Explorer. Change Log. Bray audits every change to a DFC and places them in a change log for users to peruse. Comments. Users can optionally add comments for other users to see. Digital signatures. DFC files can be digitally signed. A signature history and signature validation is provided in Bray. Pluggable security schemes. Bray ships with plain text and IC-ISM security schemes. • Where can I get a one-off server of Active Directory for Developing against?

  We're not a windows shop, but one of our products is going to need to optionally integrate with Active Directory - things like SSO etc. I'd really rather not go through the rigamarole of setting up a whole server just to develop against it and then leave it hanging around for testing purposes. Is there a simple cloud-based service where I can purchase a server running active directory for a month or two just for development purposes? I looked into Amazon EC2 but it looks like you may still need to go through a significant set up (I may be wrong on this).

• SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services

  Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity.  So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the Midwest Geeks group which started as the community of Microsoft related user groups in our region uses SkyDrive groups and shares calendars and documents.  This collaboration aspect isn’t new in itself, but having it connected with the rest of your cloud assets makes life easier. Another recent usage of this type of cloud service is storing your personal music files in order to get that same universal access.  This is a scenario that has some arguments for and against.  On the one hand own once and listen anywhere is great, but the on the other hand the bandwidth cost becomes a giant downside.  This is especially the case since most carriers are now doing away with unlimited data packages. Ultimately I see this type of resource growing an evolving at a phenomenal rate over the next few years as we continue to become more mobile.  Having multiple players such as SkyDrive and iCloud will only help to give us more options.  Only time will tell where we end up next. del.icio.us Tags: SkyDrive,Cloud Services,Paul Thurrott,UserCommunity

  Oracle and Microsoft have entered into a new partnership that will help customers embrace cloud computing by providing greater choice and flexibility in how to deploy Oracle software.  Here are the key elements of the partnership: Effective today, our customers can run supported Oracle software on Windows Server Hyper-V and in Windows Azure Effective today, Oracle provides license mobility for customers who want to run Oracle software on Windows Azure Microsoft will add Infrastructure Services instances with popular configurations of Oracle software including Java, Oracle Database and Oracle WebLogic Server to the Windows Azure image gallery Microsoft will offer fully licensed and supported Java in Windows Azure Oracle will offer Oracle Linux, with a variety of Oracle software, as preconfigured instances on Windows Azure Oracle’s strategy and commitment is to support multiple platforms, and Microsoft Windows has long been an important supported platform.  Oracle is now extending that support to Windows Server Hyper-V and Window Azure by providing certification and support for Oracle applications, middleware, database, Java and Oracle Linux on Windows Server Hyper-V and Windows Azure. As of today, customers can deploy Oracle software on Microsoft private clouds and Windows Azure, as well as Oracle private and public clouds and other supported cloud environments. • Opportunities in Cloud Computing

  A recent article from CIO Journal indicates that there is an extreme labor shortage (in certain technology areas) that is is leading to upward pressure on wages for IT Workers. This represents a great opportunity for those with certain skill-sets, among which include Java (Oracle certification is mentioned specifically). The article points out that a key driver of the labor shortage is the expansion of cloud computing. Cloud computing is set up to make life extremely simple for end-users, but the model pushes the complexity to back-end systems which are sophisticated, enterprise-level computing stacks (Oracle has an extensive set of cloud computing solutions). These complex systems require very highly-skilled IT professionals (the best-of-the-best) to successfully develop, implement, administer and maintain them. What this mean for you is that there is opportunity for those who have the appropriate skills at the appropriate levels. If you want to be a part of this opportunity you should do a self-assessment of your own skill-sets and experience. Based upon your results you can decide where it would be most appropriate to spend your time and resources for the highest return on your investment. By expanding and sharpening your skills and by gaining greater experience you will be better prepared to take advantage of career opportunities (like this) that come along periodically. • 3d point cloud render from x,y,z 2d array with texture

  Need some direction on 3d point cloud display using OpenGL in c++ (vs2008). I am brand new to OpenGL and trying to do a 3d point cloud display with a texture. I have 3 2D arrays (each same size 1024x512) representing x,y,z of each point. I think I am on the right track with glBegin(GL_POLYGON); for(int i=0; i<1024; i++) { for(int j=0; j<512; j++) { glVertex3f(x[i][j], y[i][j], z[i][j]); } } glEnd(); Now this loads all the vertices in the buffer (I think) but from here I am not sure how to proceed. Or I am completely wrong here. Then I have another 2D array (same size) that contains color data (values from 0-255) that I want to use as texture on the 3D point cloud and display. I understand that this maybe a very basic OpenGL implementation for some but for me this is a huge learning curve. So any pointers, nudge or kick in the right direction will be appreciated.

  Hi, Im currently developing a cross-platform C application. Is there any compiler macro which is defined only during compilation on Windows, so I can #ifdef some Windows specific #includes? Typical example is selecting between WinSock and Berkeley sockets headers: #ifdef _WINDOWS #include <winsock.h> #else #include <sys/socket.h> #include <netinet/in.h> #include <sys/un.h> #include <arpa/inet.h> #include <netdb.h> #endif So the thing Im looking for is something like that _WINDOWS macro. Thanks for any tips.

• STORM Cloud Servers — Anybody Used Them? Any Reviews and/or Advice? [closed]

  I just posted this in StackOverflow before I realized that Serverfault existed ... Hi folks, Just wondering if anyone has used STORM Cloud Servers from Liquid Web: https://www.stormondemand.com/cloud-server/ I'm shopping for a new hosting provider for my server that has about 50 'mom & pop' domains on it and finding that webhosting has changed a lot in the last ten years. I feel like I'm trying to buy 100 cellphone plans at once. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
