• Activate Your Monitor via Motion Trigger

  Most people are in the habit of jiggling their mouse or tapping their keyboard when they want to wake their monitor. This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. Their local volunteer fire department needed a monitor on for quick information checks but they didn’t need it on all the time and they didn’t want to have to walk over and activate the monitor when they needed it. The solution involved hacking a simple infrared security sensor and wiring it via USB to send a mouse command when motion is detected in the room. • Bitmap font rendering, UV generation and vertex placement

  I am generating a bitmap, however, I am not sure on how to render the UV's and placement. I had a thread like this once before, but it was too loosely worded as to what I was looking to do. What I am doing right now is creating a large 1024x1024 image with characters evenly placed every 64 pixels. Here is an example of what I mean. I then save the bitmap X/Y information to a file (which is all multiples of 64). However, I am not sure how to properly use this information and bitmap to render. This falls into two different categories, UV generation and kerning. Now I believe I know how to do both of these, however, when I attempt to couple them together I will get horrendous results. For example, I am trying to render two different text arrays, "123" and "njfb". While ignoring the texture quality (I will be increasing the texture to provide more detail once I fix this issue), here is what it looks like when I try to render them. http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/599/badfontrendering.png Now for the algorithm. I am doing my letter placement with both GetABCWidth and GetKerningPairs. I am using GetABCWidth for the width of the characters, then I am getting the kerning information for adjust the characters. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can implement my own bitmap font renderer? I am trying to do this without using external libraries such as angel bitmap tool or freetype. I also want to stick to the way the bitmap font sheet is generated so I can do extra effects in the future. • Problem sorting RSS feed by date using XSL

  I'm creating a website where I need to show the top 5 records from an RSS feed, and these need to be sorted by date and time. The date fields in the RSS feed are in the following format: "Mon, 16 Feb 2009 16:02:44 GMT" I'm having big problems getting the records to sort correctly - I've tried lots of different code examples I've seen, but none seem to sort the records correctly. • SQL CE: Limiting rows returned in the query

  In SQL Compact Edition 3.5 , note that it is the Compact Edition I am talking about- Is there a way to limit the amount of rows to only 2? Something like using LIMIT or TOP. I really don't want to use anything with a SqlCEDataReader, or SqlCEResultSet. I want to do all the limiting in the query. Is this possible now? I have looked around and it doesn't seem so. EDIT- In response to Dave Swersky's request for data and using Min()/Max() on some columns as a means to get the top 2 lines, here is some sample (sterilized) data: Line Site Function Status 1010 Las Vegas new 4 1020 DC send 1 1030 Portland copy 1 1040 SF copy 1 1050 Portland copy 1 1060 DC send 1 *There are more columns than this but these are the significant ones. Sorry for the lack of intuitive data (but the actual data is even less intuitive!), but for security i need to change the data. So- i need to determine: what site the record was at in the preceding line to determine where it needs to be picked up. The site on any given line (except the first line with function = 'new') corresponds to where the item is going next. So simply grabbing that site off the same line wont tell me where it came from. The status will always be 1 or 4. The 4 corresponds to a where it has been delivered already and so i dont want to include those records in the result. But it might be useful in getting the pickup site. For this table of data i want the query to return the site corresponding to the line just above the first line with status 1. So- for this it would be Las Vegas.

• C# Entity FrameWork MySQL Slow Queries Count()

  Hello, I'm having a serious issue with MySQL and Entity Framework 4.0. I have dropped a Table onto the EF Designer surface, and everything seems OK. However, when I perform a query in the following fashion: using(entityContext dc = new entityContext()) { int numRows = dc.myTable.Count(); } The query that is generated looks something like this: SELECT `GroupBy1`.`A1` AS `C1` FROM (SELECT Count(1) AS `A1` FROM (SELECT `pricing table`.`a`, `pricing table`.`b`, `pricing table`.`c`, `pricing table`.`d`, `pricing table`.`e`, `pricing table`.`f`, `pricing table`.`g`, `pricing table`.`h`, `pricing table`.`i` FROM `pricing table` AS `pricing table`) AS `Extent1`) AS `GroupBy1` As should be evident, this is an excruciatingly unoptimized query. It is selecting every single row! This is not optimal, nor is it even possible for me to use MySQL + EF at this point. I have tried both the MySQL 6.3.1 [that was fun to install] and DevArt's dotConnect for MySQL and both produce the same results. This table has 1.5 million records.. and takes 6-11s to execute! What am I doing wrong ? Is there any way to optimize this [and other queries] to produce sane code like: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table ? Generating the same query using SQLServer takes virtually no time and produces sane code. Help! Thanks! Matthew

• how can I add a custom non-DataTable column to my DataView, in a winforms ADO.net application?

  Hi, How could I (/is it possible) to add a custom column to my DataView, and in this column display the result of a specific calculation. That is, I currently have a dataGridView which has a binding to a DataView, based on the DataTable from my database. I'd like to add an additional column to the dataGridView to display a number which is calculated by looking at this current row plus it's children row. In other words the info for the column isn't just derivable from the row data itself. Specific questions might be: a) where to add the column itself? to the DataView I assume? b) which method / event to trigger the re-calculation of the value of this custom column from ( / how do I control this) Thanks PS.   I am attempting to encode video using libavcodec/libavformat. I'm trying to change the standard output-example.c from ffmpeg source. The AVI file is created on the disk, but the only sound is encoded. I tried adding a lot of options for x264 from here. All the other codecs works fine, mpeg2, mpeg4, mjpeg, xvid. In addition to specifying the parameters x264, I also set the codec to AVOutputFormat structure. That's all I've done. • how to display my list with n amount on each line in Python

  im trying to display my list with 7 states on each line here is what i have so far, but it displays as one long string of all the states with quotes around each state.   Under Win32, it is a common technique to generate a monochrome bitmask from a bitmap for transparency use by doing the following: SetBkColor(hdcSource, clrTransparency); VERIFY(BitBlt(hdcMask, 0, 0, bm.bmWidth, bm.bmHeight, hdcSource, 0, 0, SRCCOPY)); This assumes that hdcSource is a memory DC holding the source image, and hdcMask is a memory DC holding a monochrome bitmap of the same size (so both are 32x32, but the source is 4 bit color, while the target is 1bit monochrome). However, this seems to fail for me when the source is 32 bit color + alpha. Instead of getting a monochrome bitmap in hdcMask, I get a mask that is all black. No bits get set to white (1). Whereas this works for the 4bit color source. My search-foo is failing, as I cannot seem to find any references to this particular problem. I have isolated that this is indeed the issue in my code: i.e. if I use a source bitmap that is 16 color (4bit), it works; if I use a 32 bit image, it produces the all-black mask. Is there an alternate method I should be using in the case of 32 bit color images? Is there an issue with the alpha channel that overrides the normal behavior of the above technique? Thanks for any help you may have to offer! ADDENDUM: I am still unable to find a technique that creates a valid monochrome bitmap for my GDI+ produced source bitmap. I have somewhat alleviated my particular issue by simply not generating a monochrome bitmask at all, and instead I'm using TransparentBlt(), which seems to get it right (but I don't know what they're doing internally that's any different that allows them to correctly mask the image). It might be useful to have a really good, working function: HBITMAP CreateTransparencyMask(HDC hdc, HBITMAP hSource, COLORREF crTransparency); Where it always creates a valid transparency mask, regardless of the color depth of hSource. Ideas?

  I am using the DOM extension to parse an xml file containing xml namespaces. I would have that namespace declarations are treated just like any other attribute, but my tests seem to disagree. I tried the following code instead but I also get an Exception. • ldap login form works, but need to add active-directory group access

  I created a form that asks you to log in, then verifies the user/pass against the ldap server/active-directory, if successful, it creates a session, which will be checked on every page. Now I want to check the session, which is the username of the person who is logged in, and do a search for them using ldap_search, so I can check what group they belong to and pass that group thru a function to verify that they can view that page. Each page will accessible to a certain group or groups of users, which those groups are defined within Active Directory. I am unsure on how I can do that using ldap_search, or maybe that is just one piece of the puzzle I am trying to solve. Any help is appreciated - thank you! • Enumerating pixel formats for adaptors and modes with OpenGL

  I'm trying to code an OpenGL path for my 3D engine. The D3D path enumerates all device adaptors, all modes (by mode I mean bit depth, dimensions, available windowed, and refresh rate) for each adaptor and then all pixel formats available for the given mode and adaptor, along side certain useful caps (shader version, filter types, etc.). So, I have broadly got the following protected functions in the class: // Enumerate all back/front buffer combinations. virtual void EnumerateBackFrontBufferCombinations(CComPtr<IDirect3D9>& d3d9); // Enumerate all depth/stencil formats. virtual void EnumerateDepthStencilFormats(CComPtr<IDirect3D9>& d3d9); // Enumerate all multi-sample formats. virtual void EnumerateMultiSampleTypes(CComPtr<IDirect3D9>& d3d9); // Enumerate all device formats, i.e. dynamic, static, render target, etc. virtual void EnumerateMapFormats(CComPtr<IDirect3D9>& d3d9); // Enumerate all capabilities. virtual void EnumerateCapabilities(CComPtr<IDirect3D9>& d3d9); The adaptors are enumerated with EnumDisplayDevices, the modes (resolutions and refresh rates) are enumerated with EnumDisplaySettings, so this can be done for either GL or D3D. The other functions I'm not so sure about with OpenGL. What are the equivalents to the IDirect3D9's CheckDeviceType, CheckDeviceFormat, CheckDeviceMultiSampleType, CheckDepthStencilMatch? I know I can use DescribePixelFormat, given a DC, but you kind-of need to have created the window before you can use a DC with it, but you can't create the window correctly until you know what formats you're going to use.   Trying to create a simple RSS2 Feed that I could later pass on to FeedBurner but can't get RSS feed to display images at all. Also, from what I have read having xml.instruct! on top might cause IE to complain it's not a valid feed. Is this true?   I have a table, where I need to do a case insensitive search on a text field. If I run this query in LinqPad directly on my database, it works as expected Table.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase") In my application, I've got a repository which exposes IQueryable objects which does some initial filtering and it looks like this var dc = new MyDataContext(); public IQueryable<Table> GetAllTables() { var ret = dc.Tables.Where(t => t.IsActive == true); return ret; } In the controller (its an MVC app) I use code like this in an attempt to mimic the LinqPad query: var rpo = new RepositoryOfTable(); var tables = rpo.GetAllTables(); // for some reason, this does a CASE SENSITIVE search which is NOT what I want. tables = tables.Where(tbl => tbl.Title.Contains("StringWithAnyCase"); return View(tables); The column is defiend as an nvarchar(50) in SQL Server 2008. What method can I override so my Cartesian grid knows how many columns and rows it has? • How do I load PersistentDocuments into the same window

  I want to open NSPersistentDocuments and load them into the same window one at a time. I'm almost there but missing some steps. Hopefully someone can help me. I have a few saved documents on the hard drive. On launch my app opens to an untitled NSPersistentDocument and creates a separate NSWindowController. When I press the button to load file 1 off the hard drive the data appears in the fields but two things are wrong that I can see: 1) changing the data doesn't make the document dirty 2) choosing save updates the persistentstore (I know this because when I open the file again I see the changes) but I get an error: +entityForName: could not locate an NSManagedObjectModel for entity name 'Book' Here's my code which is in the WindowController that was launched initially with the untitled document. This code isn't perfect. For example, I know I should processPendingChanges and save the current doc before I load the new one.
