• Ubuntu 10.10 not recognizing external hard drive

  Installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a hard drive by itself (no windows). All updates are up to date. Everything`works fine except when I plug in a 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive....it is not recognized. When I plug in an 8 gig flash drive it is recognized no problem. What do I mean by "not recognized"? I mean: how do you know it was not recognized. You can check the command "cat /proc/partitions" in a terminal with and without the hdd attached. If you see some difference, it's ok. If the difference is something like "sda1" (sd+letter+number) then you have partition on it, maybe it can't be handled in Ubuntu (no filesystem on it or so). If there is only "sda" in the difference for example (sd+letter, but no number after it) then the drive itself is detected, just no partition is created on it. Also you can check out the messages of the kernel, with the "dmesg" command in the terminal. If there is no disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions, there can be an USB level problem, you can issue command "lsusb" as it was suggested before my answer. It's really matter of what do you mean about "not recognized". @Marco Ceppi @Oli @Pitto By "not recognized" I meant that when I plug in a 8 gig flash drive an icon immediately appears on the desktop imdicating that there is a flash drive plugged in and I can click on it and view the files on the flash drive. It also shows up on the "Nautilus" default file manager. When I plug in the 320 gig Toshiba external hard drive, I get no indication on the desktop or the file manager (thus "not recogized"). When I run the command "cat/proc/partitions/" I get an error message Could not open location 'file:///home/bob/cat/proc/partitions' with or without the external hard drive installed. With the "dmeg" command I get about 10 pages of info with no mention of disk/partition/anything in /proc/partitions. • Changing read-write permissions on my external Seagate hard drive

  I have an external hard drive (Seagate Free Agent) that I normally download files to. I have a dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 along with Windows 7-64 bit. I can read all of my files in my external HD perfectly, but when I attempt to do a download of a file to this drive, I get an "unable to write because of read only" disk error. When I attempt to change the permissions of the disk through the "Properties" bar, I still get an error that I don't have the proper permissions to change permissions. I have heard of "mounting" the disk, but I am afraid of mistakenly reformatting and destroying all the data that I have currently on that drive. How best should I safely change the permissions on that drive so that I can write and download files to the drive?? The drive is listed under /dev/sdc1.

• Mac Finder: WD My Passport won't mount

  I really need your help. I have a WD My Passport 650GB (with Firewire and USB). I'm using it for almost a year now and it always worked fine. While underway I simply plug it in via Firewire - at home I connect it to my Airport Extreme to have it available as a network storage. Today I connected the hd to my macbookpro (via firewire) and NOTHING. The hd is starting (clearly making a sound and the power-indicator is flashing) but it won't appear in Finder. I also tried it with USB - no sign. I ran Disk Utility and tried to repair the disk. At first try I got a red error line saying that something is wrong with the "headers". However the repair completed with a success message saying that everything is ok. I also verified the hd. Also with a success message. I did that a few times again and unplugged it in between. Never got the error with the headers again - it's always completing and saying everything is ok. However I can't mount the drive. That is what Disk Utility is showing. Any ideas on that? I really need the files on that hd. thank you in advance!

• Can Visual Studio Express run from USB drive?

  Using an arbitrary Windows machine (2000/XP or later), I can install Eclipse CDT to a USB drive move that USB drive onto a different Windows machine--one that does not have any form of Eclipse software already installed, and potentially a different version of Windows (but 2000/XP or later) use Eclipse to develop application-level C/C++ programs on that second machine (and that includes using the debugger), running directly from the USB drive without copying anything to C:. I can do all this without having Administrator privileges on either machine. I can do the same with NetBeans, and with several other IDEs that support C/C++ development. Is it possible to do this with any version of Visual Studio Express? If not, can you explain the technical reason(s) this doesn't work?

• How to Create a Virtual Windows Drive

  Hello, I'm trying to create a Windows Virtual Drive ( like c:\ ) to map a remote storage. The main purpose is to do it in a clear way to the user. Therefore the user wouldn't know that he is writing/reading from another site. I was searching for available products, and i find that FUSE is not an option in Windows and WebDAV maps directly the drive, and i would like to build a middle layer between windows and remote storage to implement some kind of services. Another alternatives exists, such as Dokan, that is very expensive, and System.IO.IsolatedStorage Namespace, that doesn't seem to explicity create a new Windows Drive. Probably pismo ( http://www.pismotechnic.com/ ) is the thing that mostly matches my requirements but I would know if there is another alternative, including some Windows ( C++ or .NET ) native API to do that.   Hi, I currently have a 640GB external HD that has 1 partition formatted as HSF+ Now I want to split some of the free space into a new FAT32 partition, without having to reformat the whole HD and losing all my data. I read that I'm supposed to be able to add new partitions in the Hard Disc Utility by clicking the "+" sign, without any loss of data. But in my case the "+" is not clickable and it says that this partition cannot be altered. Can anyone tell me how to proceed. Or is it impossible without reformatting the whole disc? Thanks ps: I'm running osx snow leopard 10.6.6

• You need to format the disk in drive

  I was copying some files over to my external hard disk and suddenly a message popped up saying that some file was open and it could not continue.It asks me whether I want to cancel the operation and I said cancel(The other operation was continue.) After that whenever I plug in the usb into the same computer it does not work. It keeps saying that I need to format the disk to continue. Luckily for me it opened on another computer and am backing up all my data. But now I am wondering why exactly this happened. Is it that the hard disk is weak. Also as an addon I currently use http://www.dtidata.com/windowssurfacescanner/ program to check for bad sectors. Is this the recommended way or is there some other better more reliable way to check if my hard disk is failing? Also could the above problem be because the hard disk is failing? If not why does it happen.Even if the hard disk is interrupted in the middle of a read write cycle doesnt there exist error handling code to enable gracefull recovery?

• External optical drive won't plug 'n play...sometimes.

  alright, I've looked a lot of different ways, but here goes. i have an external DVD burner that connects via USB and should be plug 'n play however sometimes when I connect it a message pops up requesting any CD or installation software it came with. It didn't come with any though. The confusing part is that if I wait a couple weeks and plug it in, then it works fine, but if I turn it off and back on the problem arises again. I've tried different computers, same problem. There's little to no customer support from the company, Ativa, and no drivers for the product. I'm hoping there's a registry trick for this. any help?

• Hard drive spark, can it be recovered?

  Alright, so I was going to install Source Film Maker but I didn't have any space, so I decided to connect an HDD via an USB converter(image below). I shut down the machine, turned the PSU off, and connected via a Molex connector & the USB converter. I turned back on the PSU, no sparks or anything, everything normal, but when I turned on the machine, I heard some sizzing(lol?) and sparks flying and a little flame, but the PC was running fine. I pressed the power button instead pulling out the plug (I panicked) so it continued to short circuit for about 10 seconds. There's a very little part on the HDD that become ash, it's near the Molex connector and the circuit is a little black as well. I'm afraid that I will damage the HDD more so I didn't hook up the HDD after all. Do you think it's the PSU(came default with Cooler Master Elite 430, 500W) or it's the HDD(Samsung SP1203N)? P.S: I've attached the HDD same way before(like 3 months ago), and it worked. HDD burn: USB connector: Sorry for the bad image quality, taken with my phone.

  I want to check for viruses on a computer that I suspect may be infected with malware. Its users are running an antivirus, but there's always the risk that something slips past and the way I see it, once the system is infected the antivirus is useless because the malware can hide itself from the AV. I think the best way to go (besides clean reinstall of the OS) would be to have an antivirus running at a boot time from a CD or a USB key. That way, the malware is just lying on the disk and cannot do any of its hide-and-seek stuff (provided the AV comes from an uninfected PC and all that). So, I'm looking for something that: Runs at boot time (off USB key or CD-ROM) Does not touch or require the local OS Discovers malware fairly well (like, Avast, AVG, Norton, whatever -- I think the're all the same anyway) Can handle Windows filesystems (FAT 32, NTFS, WinFS ;-) ) Comes from some sort of trusted source (no Windows Antivirus 2009) I know that this is no silver bullet (nothing is, really*), but I do have a feeling it's more likely to help than doing the scan* within the infected system.

  I have an Eee PC 1008HA. A few days before I got a virus that was preventing the Windows to boot but I could turn the computer on. I opened (disassembled) the Eee PC, then disconnected the hard disk. I connected the hard disk to another computer and copied my files. When I connected again the hard disk to my Eee PC and closed (assembled) it , I cannot turn the Eee PC on. Even when I connect the wire for charging, neither the charging light nor any other lights light up.

  I am in a place where electricity is not ideal (old house, no ground), sometimes it occasionally shuts down and supposedly there are some spikes. I consider using UPS with the goal to increase safety of my personal data. My first priority is the health of my internal and external USB hard drives which can be damaged due to possible power instability. I do not care that much about possible losses of not-saved work, instead I just want to let my system have a minimum time to turn off without any risk of physical damaging my hard drives. Would a cheap offline UPS suit my neads? Or do i need a better one with automatic voltage regulator (AVR)? How critical is AVR for the hard drives? The external ones require their own power supplies and will be plugged directly into UPS.

  Over the past few months, my Windows XP machine has slowed down to a crawl. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go from power-up to reaching a responsive state. • Flash drive doesn't mount on mac

  I've got two different USB flash drives which are formatted MS-DOS(FAT-16). When I plug each into my MacBook Pro (running MacOS 10.6 - Snow Leopard), they don't mount. I can see them using Disk Utility. When I run an Ubuntu VM inside of VMWare Fusion, Ubuntu has no trouble mounting these either. I've tested with the drives plugged directly into the machine and plugged into a usb hub -- both give the same results. Is there a setting I've inadvertently set which disables automounting? Is there an issue with mounting FAT-16 drives?

• Ways to recover data from external hard drive

  I use an external hard disk for backup of my mac with time machine (OS 10.5.8). I have made something wrong and I have found important folders in the recycler bin. These folders come from external hd. They are backup folders (backups.backupdb) and others. I have tried to restore them draggin and dropping. Some of them came back in the external hd in a while. For the others it takes hours to "preparing to copy" and then it has said "there's no space to copy" on ext hd. It's strange. Files are now in the recycle bin (180gb), and the ext had should have lot of free space. But it isn't really so. Ext hd is not free of space even if these files are in the bin. I ask for advices. I'm not also able to use time machine now (and i have "lost" old backups) for the same reason. Ext hd says that it has not free space.. Thanks

  Im thinking of switching to one of the macbook pro retinas with a 256gb ssd, im making the move from a 512gb hd, which at the moment is split into a 60bg windows partition (which i dont think im going to have on my new machine) and a 440gb main partition of the main partition ive got 140gb free. So all in if i disregard the 60gb windows part ive got about 200gb free so im using 300gb, which is still a bit to much, ive had this machine 4/5 yrs so its likely to be clogged with files that i no longer need, is there a tool that i can use to view my current hd and see whats taking up the most room, so i can begin to see where i can cut down ? just for a bit of background my current machine runs osx.

  I am in the market for 2-3 new drives, I would like each to be at least 1tb to 2tb in size. I have been reading all the reviews on newegg.com for 1tb and larger drives and they all have 1 thing in common. Almost all the ones I read about have complaints of them being DOA or dieing within a few weeks of use. I am hoping to find some drives with this storage range that have a reputation for lasting a long time instead of a short life. Please help me if you have any experience with these sort of drives? Most the ones I read about were Western Digital brand. I realize some might complain that this questions answer would be based upon a timeframe, so if a user searches and find this answer a year from now it will be outdated but I would appreciate any help based on the current hard drives available as of April 10th, 2010 on newegg.com

• One hard drive missing after converting from ide to ahci

  I have two 500GB SATA HDD in my desktop running XP. After converting from IDE to AHCI, the HDD I use to store data can no longer be accessed from XP. It shows only the first partition as 150GB, and data type is listed as RAW. However, if I boot into a live linux environment or if I pull that HDD out and connect it using USB, I can still get to all my files again. So I completely formatted the HDD into one single partition. But XP still does not recognize it. It still shows the disk as the 150GB partition and data type is still RAW.
