  • What features of old computers helped you learn to be a better programmer?

    - by David Cary
What features of old computers helped you learn to be a better programmer -- but don't seem to be available on new computers? I imagine that, while educational, you are really glad some features are gone, such as programs ran so slowly that I could almost see each pixel being plotted, so I got a visceral feel for the effect of various optimizations. I imagine other features you may be a little nostalgic for, such as I could turn on the computer, and write a short program that printed "Hello, World" on the printer, before ever "booting" a "disk". (I'm hoping that this is constructive enough to avoid the fate of the " What have we lost from computers 20 years ago ?" question).

  • Can I disable OS X Lion Autosave and Versions?

    - by Philip
OK I'm going there: I want to turn off a new feature in OS X that's so infuriating I could swear it was designed by Microsoft, namely, Autosave / Versions. I just don't want it. I have a workflow that involves my trigger finger on cmd-S, I use my own VCS when necessary, I save as compulsively and I open applications like TextEdit and Preview as temporary notepads without wanting any changes saved automatically and without a stupid unlock dialog that then records my changes when I only want to see the changes and not record them. So: please tell me how I can turn off Versions without rolling back to 10.6, and you will be my new personal hero. Thanks! PS: Just asking how to disable, not for a discussion of the pros and cons of the features.

  • What software can I use to get statistics about the programs I use most? [closed]

    - by pinouchon
I am looking for software that reports statistics about my program usage over time. It should display output something like this (numbers are made up): Program usage today: Youtube (Chrome) 42:10 9.42% NetBeans 30:52 6.33% Google search (Chrome) 12:03 3.20% Windows explorer 5:43 1.54% Putty 2:23 0.89% ? ? ? Features I look for: Advanced statistics: ability to view a chart, to see statistics today, this week, this month. Program usage should be based on the title of the active window. The time where the user is idle shouldn't count. Ability to group some windows title together, for example, I want to group titles as Stack Overflow and * - Stack Overflow together, same thing for every website and explorer windows. Do you know a program that does something similar?

  • Java stuff you didn't know you didn't know

    - by pretzelstick
What are some Java language features or Java related tools that you were embarrassed to find that you didn't know about? Examples for me are: jmap RuntimeException Please post things every Java programmer should know about, be they language features, tools, or facts about how the JVM works, but that you found out about long after you should have.

  • What do you miss from classic-asp days that is not available in asp.net ?

    - by this. __curious_geek
Many of us have come from classic-asp background and eventually picked up asp.net for better. But I miss many features from classic-asp that are not available in asp.net. Like, I don't get complete control over the markup renderred to the client in asp.net wherein in classic-asp it was possible. What are those features you miss from your classic-asp days ? PS: This question is tribute to original classic-asp that once ruled the world.

  • What "exotic" language feature do you use every day?

    - by fmark
For most programmers using procedural or object-oriented languages there is a language-feature lowest common denominator: variables, procedures, standard control structures, and classes. However, almost all languages add features on top of this. Recent C# versions have LINQ and delegates. C++ has template metaprogramming. Java has annotations. What features such as these do you use every day?

  • How can i programmatically use aero snap features from C# code

    - by user1739957
I have a simple question. How can I access aero snap programmatically from my C# code. Like, if I click a button "Snap Left", I want my program window to snap to the left, just like when its drug over there manually. I looked all over SO, but all the questions seem to be about aero snap not working with a form, and keeping it from snapping a form. Not programmatically snapping a form. I'm happy to use interloping. Thanks

  • How to "bubble" a Controls features when place in a custom UserControl

    - by Ted
I'll try to explain what Im after. I dont know the technical term for it, so here goes: Example 1: If I place a LisView on a Form and add som columns I am able, in Design-Time, to click-and-drag the columns to resize them. Example 2: Now, I place a ListView in a UserControl and name it "MyCustomListView" (and perhaps add some method to enhance it somehow). If I know place the "MyCustomListView" on a Form I am unable to click-and-drag the column headers to resize them in Design-Time. Is there any way to easily make that happen? Some form of "pass the click-and-drag event to the underlying control and let that control do its magic". Im not really looking to recode, just pass on the mouseclick (or whatever it is) and let the, in this case, ListView react as it did in the first example above. Regards

  • Mochiweb's Scalability Features

    - by ErJab
From all the articles I've read so far about Mochiweb, I've heard this over and over again that Mochiweb provides very good scalability. My question is, how exactly does Mochiweb get its scalability property? Is it from Erlang's inherent scalability properties or does Mochiweb have any additional code that explicitly enables it to scale well? Put another way, if I were to write a simple HTTP server in Erlang myself, with a simple 'loop' (recursive function) to handle requests, would it have the same level scalability as a simple web server built using the Mochiweb framework?

  • Enabling Direct3D-specific features (transparency AA)

    - by Bill Kotsias
Hello. I am trying to enable transparency antialiasing in my Ogre-Direct3D application, but it just won't work. HRESULT hres = d3dSystem->getDevice()->SetRenderState(D3DRS_ADAPTIVETESS_Y, (D3DFORMAT)MAKEFOURCC('S', 'S', 'A', 'A')); /// returned value : hres == S_OK ! This method is taken from NVidia's technical report. I can enable transparency AA manually through the NVIDIA Control Panel, but surely I can't ask my users to do it like this. Anyone has any idea? Thank you for your time, Bill

  • Asp.net hosting equivalent of Dreamhost (pricing, features and support)

    - by Cherian
Disclaimer: I have browsed http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/asp.net+hosting and didn’t find anything quite similar in value to Dreamhost. One of the biggest impediments IMHO for developing web applications on asp.net is the cost of deployment. I am not talking about building sites like Stackoverflow.com or plentyoffish.com. This is about sites that are bigger than brochureware and smaller than ones that require dedicated servers. Let me give you an example. xmec.org is an asp.net site I maintain for my college alumni. On an average it’s slated to hit around 1000-1100 views per day. At present it’s hosted on godaddy. The service is so damn pathetic; I am using it only because of the lack of options. The site doesn’t scale (no, it’s not the code) and the web control panels are extremely slow. The money I pay doesn’t justify the service or the performance. Every deployment push is a visit to the infuriating web control panel to set the permissions and the root directories. Had I developed it in python, this would have been deployed on Dreamhost.com with $10/year hosting fees (they have offers running all throughout) 50 GB space 5 MySQL Databases Shell / FTP Users POP / SMTP Access Unlimited Domains hosting Unlimited Sub domains hosting Unlimited Domains Forwarded/Mirrored Custom DNS (These are the only ones I could think of. More at the feature page) With a dream host shell, I even have a svn checked-out version of wordpress for my blog. Now, that’s control! To my question: Is there any asp.net (preferably .net 3.5. Dreamhost keeps on updating versions every fortnight) hosting company providing remotely similar feature-sets and pricing like Dreamhost. My requirements are: Less than $15-25/ year Typical WISP minus PHP .net 3.5 SP1 Full Trust mode(I can live with medium trust, if not for the IL emitting libraries) Isolated Application Pool 5 – 10 MySQL db’s Unlimited domain hosting MsSql 2005 or 2008 FTP support At Least 5 GB space SMTP IIS 7 Log files Accessibility Moderately good control panel Scripting, shell support Nominal bandwidth Another case in point: Recently I’ve been contemplating building a tool-website to find duplicates and weird characters in my Google contacts and fix them. With asp.net, the best part is that I can do this with LINQ to XML in less than 100 lines of code. What’s bad is the hosting part. I don’t think I stand to make any money out of this and therefore can’t afford to host it on GoGrid or DiscountAsp.net. Godaddy is not an option either. If I do this in python, I can push to this my existing $10 Dreamhost account with another domain pointed. No extra cost. Svn exported with scripts (capability) to change the connection string! Looking at the problem holistically, I think I represent a large breed of programmers playing it cheap and experimenting different things on a regular basis, one of which will become the next twitter/digg.

  • Media Foundation: Custom Media Source features

    - by Ivan Dyachkoff
With IMFMediaSource and IMFByteStreamHandler I can access bytes from media source to determine media type and audio/video stream parameters, such as duration, quality, number of streams, etc. But can I replace these bytes and send them back to client? E.g. I receive zip file bytestream, extract actual media and send another bytestream with asf (for example) data. Is this possible?

  • Any netbeans features that will make my day?

    - by Kris
Hi all, I've recently gotten quite fond of netbeans for my php work because of the XDebug integration. It has made me all but forget about textmate (which imho still beats netbeans for the little things) What do you think is the one awesome netbeans feature I should know about, and more importantly why and how do I use it? I'm asking this to optimize my skills in the use of the IDE and based on the idea that what works well for others might just work for me (and hopefully others).

  • Free Online tools for testing mysql queries - having features like PhPMyAdmin

    - by Sandeepan Nath
Can anybody tell me any "free online hosted database servers" (don't know if that is the correct term) where we can do query testing and all those things that we can do on tools like PhpMyAdmin? does something like that exist? Like we have http://jsfiddle.net/ for testing js codes. I checked http://sqlzoo.net/ but this is very much limited and there are some predefined tables in some given examples on which we can alter things. That's all. It does not allow me to do a lots of other things like creating tables etc. A nice resource - PhpMyAdmin's demo site . Use the latest stable version here. You have full control over the MySQL server, however you should not change root, debian-sys-maint or pma user password or limit their permissions. If you do so, demo can not be accessed until privileges are restored, so you just break things for you and other users.

  • Some jQuery-powered features not working in Chrome

    - by Enchantner
    I'm using a jCarouselLite plugin for creating two image galleries on the main page of my Django-powered site. The code of elements with navigation arrows is generating dynamically like this: $(document).ready(function () { $('[jq\\:corner]').each(function(index, item) { item = $(item); item.corner(item.attr('jq:corner')) }) $('[jq\\:menu]').each(function (index, item) { item = $(item); item.menu(item.attr('jq:menu')) }) $('[jq\\:carousel]').each(function(index, item) { item = $(item); var args = item.attr('jq:carousel').split(/\s+/) lister = item.parent().attr('class') + '_lister' item.parent().append('<div id="'+ lister +'"></div>'); $('#' + lister).append("<a class='nav left' href='#'></a><a class='nav right' href='#'></a>"); toparrow = $(item).position().top + $(item).height() - 50; widtharrow = $(item).width(); $('#' + lister).css({ 'display': 'inline-block', 'z-index': 10, 'position': 'absolute', 'margin-left': '-22px', 'top': toparrow, 'width': widtharrow }) $('#' + lister + ' .nav.right').css({ 'margin-left': $('#' + lister).width() + 22 }) item.jCarouselLite({ btnNext: '#' + lister + ' .nav.right', btnPrev: '#' + lister + ' .nav.left', visible: parseInt(args[0]) }) }) The problem is that if page is loaded through an url, typed in the adress bar, some functions doesn't work and the second gallery appears with the wrong parameters, but if I came to this page via clicking link - everything works perfectly. It happends only in Google Chrome (Ubuntu, stable 5.0.360.0), but not in Firefox or Opera. What could be the reason?

  • The best way to implement drawing features like Keynote

    - by Shamseddine
Hi all, I'm trying to make a little iPad tool's for drawing simple geometrical objects (rect, rounded rect, ellipse, star, ...). My goal is to make something very close to Keynote (drawing feature), i.e. let the user add a rect (for instance), resizing it and moving it. I want too the user can select many objects and move them together. I've thought about at least 3 differents ways to do that : Extends UIView for each object type, a class for Rect, another for Ellipse, ... With custom drawing method. Then add this view as subview of the global view. Extends CALayer for each object type, a class for Rect, another for Ellipse, ... With custom drawing method. Then add this layer as sublayer of the global view layer's. Extends NSObject for each object type, a class for Rect, another for Ellipse, ... With just a drawing method which will get as argument a CGContext and a Rect and draw directly the form in it. Those methods will be called by the drawing method of the global view. I'm aware that the two first ways come with functions to detect touch on each object, to add easily shadows,... but I'm afraid that they are a little too heavy ? That's why I thought about the last way, which it seems to be straight forward. Which way will be the more efficient ??? Or maybe I didn't thought another way ? Any help will be appreciated ;-) Thanks.

  • Mixing JSP/HTML any new features or suggestions

    - by Maglebolia
Hi all, I have a Web-Application, which is mainly JSP (file extension) and is including some HTML. It seems to me that the "general" way is "old" and not always well red by some IDE like Eclipse: Is there no other way to include jsp expression with "<% ... %". There is no need for a framework to resolve this, since we only have like 60 pages. I run through examples and see that we can seperate the code with blockquotes "< script < /script ". I'm really wondering which is the better method for understanding and easier reading of the code. Any formatting, syntax coloring, plugin or new code style suggestions would help. Here an example <%} %> <%if(condition) { %> <tr> <td class="label"><%=method()%></td> <td class="text"><%=method()%></td> </tr> <%} %> <tr>

  • Swimlane Diagram Softwares with Expand/Collapse Features

    - by louis xie
I've been searching real hard for a software which can fulfill my needs, but to no avail. I have a swimlane diagram which is extremely huge, and almost impossible to model using Visio or any traditional swimlane software. I would need to model both the operational process, as well as the interactions within an application and between different applications. Therefore, without wasting additional effort modelling these separately, I am looking for a solution which I can combine both views together. That is, possibly one which I can expand/collapse/group/ungroup processes/subprocesses together. Take a typical credit card process for instance, a hypothetical description of the swimlane could be as such: Customer submits application form to the bank Bank Officer A receives the application form and validates that it was correctly filled Bank Officer A submits application form to Bank Officer B for processing. Bank Officer B checks credit quality of the customer through Application X. Application X submits query to Application Y to retrieve Credit Report. Application X retrieves credit report and submits to Application Z for computation of credit scores Bank Officer B validates that customer is credit worthy, and submits application to Bank Officer C for processing. The above is an over-simplified credit card request process, and a purely hypothetical one. What I'm trying to drive at is, each of the above processes have sub-processes, and I want to be able to switch between a "detailed" view and "aggregated" view. If possible, add in time dependency of the different tasks, as well. I haven't been able to find one such software which could do this.
