By now you’ve undoubtedly seen the blogs and announcements about Oracle OpenWorld. And perhaps you’ve also seen the news about OpenWorld’s newest sister event: Oracle Customer Experience (CX) Summit @ OpenWorld. Oracle CX Summit was created to be the most meaningful CX event, to be truly unique, to serve as the place to discover what it takes and what it really means to put the customer at the center of your business success. One long-time Oracle customer, when told about the Oracle CX Summit, put it this way: ‘This makes me rethink how I think about Oracle and Customer Experience’. Listen to what she heard and you be the judge. We believe Customer Experience (‘CX’) is a movement, not just the latest ‘IT’ tech trend. CX isn’t something you can simply ‘install’. CX is one of the most strategic initiatives an organization can undertake. Customer Experience is about connecting with an organization’s most important asset, the customer, and the critical role that connection has to an organization’s success. And there’s never been a bigger gathering of the smartest CX minds, most successful CX companies, and innovative CX examples than Oracle CX Summit. Take Subaru, for example. The company fully embraced the CX opportunity and their CX leadership will be on stage at the Oracle CX Summit to share their CX journey. They radically changed the way they interact with their customers, empower their employees, and differentiate their brand. And this is a story with a phenomenal happy ending: in a stagnant market and shrinking economy, they GREW their business and outpaced their competition. • SQL SERVER – New Look for CodePlexProject – Hosting for Open Source Software

- by pinaldave
Codeplex is my favorite site. CodePlex is Microsoft’s free open source project hosting site. You can create projects to share with the world, collaborate with others on their projects, and download open source software. It is great place to find so many open source project available to explore. All the softwares are free and open source. I often go there at intervals to check what is new in SQL Server field as well on other technologies. Yesterday when I visited it, I had nice surprise as it has total makeover and looks very decent as well elegant at the same time. I have noticed that when I talk about Codeplex is user community, not everybody knows about it. The quickest way I explain what is codeplex is that I start naming few of the projects which are available there and suddenly I start noticing a few hands going up knowing the projects. This is indirect way to prove that many of us know CodePlex usability but do not pay special attention to what it is actually. Let me name a few popular projects of the CodePlex here. SQL Server Sample Database [link] Image Resizer for Windows [link] Ajax Control Toolkit [link] Skype Voice Changer [link] Silverlight Toolkit [link] Windows 7 USB/DBD Download Tool [link] Orchard Project [link] There are very interesting SQL Server projects available on Codeplex as well. I am listing few of them here for reference in listed in no particular order. SQL Server Sample Database [link] SQL Server Compact ToolBox [link] Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server [link] Internals Viewer for SQL Server [link] SQL Server Spatial Tooks [link] SQL Monitor – managing sql server performance [link] SQL Server 2008 Extended Events SSMS Addin [link] How many of above mentioned project have you come across earlier? Leave a comment it will be interesting to know what our community is familiar with. • What is the best book on Silverlight 4?

- by mbcrump
Silverlight/Expression 4 Books! I recently stumbled upon a post asking, “What is the best book on Silverlight 4?” In the age of the internet, it can be hard for anyone searching for a good book to actually find it. I have read a few Silverlight 4/Expression books in 2010 and decided to post the “best of” collection. Instead of reading multiple books, you can cut your list down to whatever category that you fit in. With Silverlight 5 coming soon, now is the time to get up to speed with what Silverlight 4 can offer. Be sure to read the full review at the bottom of each section. For the “Beginner” Silverlight Developer: Both of these books contains very simple applications and will get you started very fast. and Book Review: Microsoft Silverlight 4 Step by Step For the guy/gal that wants to “Master” Expression Blend 4: This is a hands-on kind of book. Victor get you started early on with some sample application and quickly deep dives into Storyboard and other Animations. If you want to learn Blend 4 then this is the place to start. Book Review: Foundation Expression Blend 4 by Victor Gaudioso If you are aiming to learn more about the Business side of Silverlight then check out the following two books: and Finally, For the Silverlight 4 guy/gal that wants to “Master” Silverlight 4, it really boils down to the following two books: and Book Review: Silverlight 4 Unleashed by Laurent Bugnion Book Review: Silverlight 4 in Action by Pete Brown I can’t describe how much that I’ve actually learned from both of these books. I would also recommend you read these books if you are preparing for your Silverlight 4 Certification. For a complete list of all Silverlight 4 books then check out http://www.silverlight.net/learn/books/ and don’t forget to subscribe to my blog. Subscribe to my feed CodeProject

• It's raining development VirtualBox images again!

- by pieter.humphrey
The cloud has burst.. forecast is looking like large amounts of VirtualBox images are coming down from OTN. Are you finding the install for Database, WebLogic, SOA or WebCenter to be complicated when your goal is simply to setup a development sandbox? Sick of giving your credit card info to cloud vendors, only to be stuck in a walled garden where you can't connect to your own internal systems? Are you new to Java and just wanted something technical to sink your teeth into? Or maybe you just want to put some stuff on that new terabyte drive you got? ;) Have no fear. VirtualBox 4.0 is here. We've have several development (read: don't use in production) images that were designed for use for in-person events, but we're posting them for your enjoyment. Some of the images have step by step hands on labs baked into them too! So get a freeware download manager like BitComet, install VirtualBox, an MD5 checksum utility (if you are on windows) and get wet! del.icio.us Tags: java, development, java ee,java fx,virtualBox,virtualization, database, soa, weblogic, jdeveloper, eclipse, netbeans, sql developer, times ten, zend, php,SOA,SOA Suite,BPM,BAM,B2B,hudson,maven,subversion,Eclipse,Solaris,OTN Technorati Tags: java, development, java ee,java fx,virtualBox,virtualization, database, soa, weblogic, jdeveloper, eclipse, netbeans, sql developer, times ten, zend, php,SOA,SOA Suite,BPM,BAM,B2B,hudson,maven,subversion,Eclipse,Solaris,OTN

• I'm a student learning C++ and I've recently found out about Ruby. Would learning (some of) Ruby help me with C++ or would it just confuse me?

- by Von32
Hi! As the title says, I'm a student that will be starting my second year of C++ very soon. I've discovered Ruby, however. While I've heard much buzz about the language before, I've disregarded it because I always thought it wasn't something that would be useful. However, I've found a number of FANTASTIC tutorials on ruby and am interested in learning it (probably because it seems so straightforward). Would playing around with ruby be a good or bad idea? I understand that there's not such thing as bad knowledge, but I'm afraid that Ruby will only confuse me when dealing with C++. How different from C++ is it? I've read it's based on C in some way, but my google-fu seems to be horrible today. How useful is Ruby in the real world? I'm not specifically asking about jobs- I'm more interested in what sort of applications may come from this language. Any specific examples worth looking at? Going back to Question two- I've read some posts on here that Ruby and C++ can hold hands once in a while. How flexible is this relationship? Is it rarely that this would work? Thank you Very much for your time! EDIT: This has to be the one community on the internet that doesn't suck. Why have I never posted before? You guys are awesome!

• Notebook Dell Inspiron N5110 Overheating after Installing Ubuntu 12.04

- by Gilberto Albino
there! I am scared here! I am a Windows 7 User and decided to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my Notebook Dell Inspiron N5110 and when the Grub loads with the menu list the fan starts speeding up. If I choose windows the fan is noiseless but if I choose Ubuntu... Gosh!!! It continues speeding up and overheating... I'm very sad about that! Every time I try to use Linux... I get a diferent hardware issue related to incompatibility or bugs! When it's not graphic driver it is bug elsewhere unimaginable!!! If there is a solution for this... I wonder if someone could spend some time helping me out because... I have JUST bought this notebook because it is in the list of Certified Hardware: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/hardware/201012-6931/ So this is sad and somehow disgusting! Linux is going for the wrong way! It's never gonna be popular while doesn't have so wide hardware support like WIndows! That's a pitty! It's very likely I won't get answered meanwhile I will switch back for windows! I prefer paying my Windows License and having a fully working system than having a free open source software that is about to explode my notebook or toast my hands before! So you linux wonderful guys help! I need somebody help (beattles so I won't cry)

• Does concurrency inherently introduce "randomness" into a game?

- by Jeff
When a game is implemented with concurrency (as most games are), does this necessarily, by its very nature, introduce an element of randomness into the game that is outside of the players' control? Note that when I use the word "random", I'm not meaning to launch into a philosophical debate about the deterministic nature of the system. I understand that concurrency is deterministic in the sense that the operating system decides which processes to allow time on the CPU and in what order (or the JVM controls which Thread's turn it is to execute, etc). But my understanding of this is that there is no way to control or predict whether one thread's next command will execute before or after another. The reason I'm asking is because this seems like a fundamental difficulty for game development where a game is supposedly designed around a player's skill. Consider a game like League of Legends. Assume that two players are battling it out. It's a very close contest between the two and it's coming down to the wire -- so much so that whoever gets their last attack off will be the one to kill the other and win the game for their team. If the players are implemented using concurrency and the situation really was like this, is it essentially out of the players' hands at this point? Is the outcome of this match all up to whatever system is arbitrarily deciding which player's thread/process will execute next? If not, what am I misunderstanding about concurrency? If so, is there any way around this problem so that a game of skill can always be a game of skill, especially in those most crucial moments?

Opening The Oracle VM Templates Blackbox Oracle VM Templates give you the efficiency of speed and the assurance of no guess work. For those in the know, Oracle VM Guest Additions is a great way to empower you to do more interesting things with the Templates. Today’s blog article is to share the secrets with those who are not content with just treating Oracle VM Templates as a black box. Oracle VM Guest Additions is a set of packages that can be installed on the guest operating system of a virtual machine running in the Oracle VM environment. These packages provide the tools to allow bi-directional communication directly between the Oracle VM Manager and the operating system running within the virtual machine. OK here’s where the ‘power-user’ part comes in…. This gives your fine-grained control over the configuration and behavior of components running within the virtual machine directly from Oracle VM Manager. You now have the ability to see and direct what goes on inside your VM from Oracle VM Manager. Get a reporting on IP addressing Use the template configuration facility to automatically configure virtual machines as they are first started Send messages directly to a virtual machine to trigger programmed events Query a virtual machine to obtain information pertaining to previous messages Enough of the theory! • From The OU Classrooms...

No excuses for not doing this systematically, and I'm trying my best to break this bad habit of bulk uploads of class photographs and do it regularly instead. But for the time being, please forgive my laziness and live by my mass introduction of all fun loving, yet talented folks whom I met in the OU classrooms during the last three months or so through these picture essay that follow. It's unfortunate, I don't get to do this for my Live Virtual Classes for obvious reason, but let me take a moment to thank them all as well for choosing OU programs on various products. • Any good C++ Component/Entity frameworks?

- by Pat
(Skip to the bold if you want to get straight to my question :) ) I've been dabbling in the different technologies available out there to use. I tried Unity and component based design, managing to get a little guy up and running around a map with basic pathfinding. I really loved how easy it was to program using components, but I wanted a bit more control and something more 2D friendly, so I went with LibGDX. I looked around and found 2 good frameworks for Java, which are Artemis and Apollo. I didn't like Artemis much, so I went with Apollo, which I loved. I managed to integrate it with Box2D and get a little guy running around bouncing balls. Great! But since I want to try out most of the options, there is still C++/SFML that I haven't tried yet. Coming from a Java/C# background, I've always wanted to get my hands dirty with C++. But then, after some looking around, I noticed there aren't any Component-Based frameworks for me to use. There's a somewhat done porting of Artemis, but, aside from not being completely finished, I didn't quite like Artemis even in Java. I found Apollo's approach much more.. logical. So, my question is, are there any good Component/Entity frameworks for C++ that I can use that are similar to Artemis, or preferably, Apollo?

• Building apps that work Together

- by Tim Murphy
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/07/03/building-apps-that-work-together.aspx Writing apps that stand alone will only get yon so far. If your app can allow the user to leverage other applications and share data you Can have a real winner on your hands. Jake Sabulsky started off by explaining that you should be concentrating on the core functionality of your app and letting the framework take care of the features that users require these days. This is implemented be leveraging contracts. When Windows 8 was released it included the File, Share and Pickers contracts. With the release of Windows 8.1 they have added the Contacts and Calendar contracts. There have been a number of improvements to the original contracts. The File URI contract will now automatically detect the size that a new windows should be opened and will also allow you to programmatically influence new window size. The Share contract has been enhanced by allowing apps to always share screenshots and links to the app in the store. To my thinking the contracts are one of the most powerful features of Windows 8. Take the time view this session and learn how to leverage them. Technorati Tags: BUILD 2013,Windows 8,Live tiles

• SQL Azure Roadmap gets a little clearer – announcements from Tech Ed

- by Eric Nelson
On Monday at Tech?Ed 2010 we announced new stuff (I like new stuff) that “showcases our continued commitment to deliver value, flexibility and control of data through data cloud services to our customers”. Ok, that does sound like marketing speak (and it is) but the good news is there is some meat behind it. We have some decent new features coming and we also have some clarity on when we will be able to get our hands on those features. SQL Azure Business Edition Extends to 50 GB – June 28th SQL Azure Business Edition database is now extending from 10GB to 50GB The new 50GB database size will be available worldwide starting June 28th SQL Azure Business Edition Subscription Offer – August 1st Starting August 1st, we will have a new discounted SQL Azure promotional offer (SQL Azure Development Accelerator Core) More information is available at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsazure/offers/. Public Preview of the Data Sync Service - CTP now Data Sync Service for SQL Azure allows for more flexible control over data by deciding which data components should be distributed across multiple datacenters in different geographic locations, based on your internal policies and business needs. Available as a community technology preview after registering at http://www.sqlazurelabs.com SQL Server Web Manager for SQL Azure - CTP this Summer SQL Server Web Manager (SSWM) is a lightweight and easy to use database management tool for SQL Azure databases, to be offered this summer. Access 10 Support for SQL Azure – available now Yey – at last! Microsoft Office 2010 will natively support data connectivity to SQL Azure – we can now start developing those “departmental apps” with the confidence of a highly available SQL store provisioned in seconds. NB: I don’t believe we will support any previous versions of Access talking to SQL Azure. The Pre-announced Spatial Data Support to Become Live – Live now* At MIX in March we announced spatial was coming and apparently it is now here - although I need to check. Related Links UK based? • Book Review: Professional WCF 4

- by Sam Abraham
My Investigation of WCF internals have set the right stage to revisit Professional WCF 4 by Pablo Cibraro, Kurt Claeys, Fabio Cozzolino and Johann Grabner. In this book, the authors dive deep into all aspects of the WCF API in a reading targeted towards intermediate and advanced developers. Book quality so far as presentation, code completeness, content clarity and organization was superb. The authors have taken a hands-on approach to thoroughly covering the WCF 4.0 API with three chapters totaling 100+ pages completely dedicated to business cases with downloadable source code readily available. Chapter 1 outlines SOA best-practice considerations. Next three chapters take a top-down approach to the WCF API covering service and data contracts, bindings, clients, instancing and Workflow Services followed by another carefully-thought three chapters covering the security options available via the WCF API. In conclusion, Professional WCF 4.0 provides a thorough coverage of the WCF API and is a recommended read for anybody looking to reinforce their understanding of the various features available in the WCF framework. Many thanks to the Wiley/Wrox User Group Program for their support of our West Palm Beach Developers’ Group. All the best, --Sam

• ecryptfs - decrypt and mount at boot with USB key

- by Josh McGee
I have a system running Ubuntu Server as a testbed for some services that I want to get familiar with. I decided to let the installation procedure set up encryption. I knew all along that I would have to decrypt it with the passphrase in order to get the system booted, but I assumed it wouldn't matter since it will only boot once or twice a month. However, my brother has informed me that he is a victim of power outages at the residence where this server is located. This means we have to explain to his girlfriend how to turn on the computer, attach a keyboard, connect a monitor (she just can't understand that she can type to the computer without a display, so whatever) and input the passphrase for us, while we are at work. I have arrived at the conclusion that I should just put together a USB key that can be plugged in before powering on the computer, to avoid all the trouble. Is this possible with ecryptfs? Is there a tutorial or simple list of instructions available so that I can knock this out and focus back on the stuff I care about? EDIT: I am aware that this is possible with LUKS and dm-crypt, but unfortunately the magical encryption that Ubuntu hands you during the installation is only ecryptfs so my question is specific to that.

• Coming Soon: Development and Extensibility Handbook from Oracle Press

- by Oliver Steinmeier
I had hoped to get my hands on a copy at OpenWorld, but it wasn't available yet from the printers. But it's coming soon: The Oracle Fusion Applications Development and Extensibility Handbook. This book is promising to be a great resource for anyone interested in learning about our favorite topic. And while I haven't read it yet, a look at the cover page image tells me that it's going to be a high-quality book. That's because I have known one of the authors, Dhaval Mehta, for many years. He recently left Oracle development for new challenges, but until then he was widely known as one of the most knowledgable Fusion Applications engineers. And his co-authors have equally strong and complementary backgrounds. Here's what the book covers: Explore Oracle Fusion Applications components and architecture Plan, develop, debug, and deploy customizations Extend out-of-the-box functionality with Oracle JDeveloper Modify web applications using Oracle Composer Incorporate Oracle SOA Suite 11g composites Validate code through sandboxes and test environments Secure data using authorization, authentication, and encryption Design and distribute personalized BI reports Automate jobs with Oracle Enterprise Scheduler Change appearance and branding of your applications with the Oracle ADF Skin Editor Expect a more detailed review of the book when it his your local bookseller's shelves (or Amazon).

• TechEd 2012: A Little Cloud And Too Little Windows Phone

- by Tim Murphy
It is Monday afternoon and the last couple of sessions have been disappointing. I started out in the Nokia: Learning to Tile session. I guess I should have read the summary more closely because it turned out to be more of a Nokia/WP7 history and sales pitch. “I’m outa here!” I made a quick venue change and now we are learning about Private Cloud Architecture. The topic and the material were very informative. The speaker even had a couple of quotable statements. The first quote was “You can trust me … I’m a doctor”. The second was a new acronym (at least for me): CAVE – committee against virtually everything. I am sure I have dealt with them more than once in my career. Unfortunately he didn’t just have a doctorate, the presentation was overdone like a medical journal. While I didn’t enjoy the presentation, I am looking forward to getting my hands on the slides to review. Here is looking forward to the next sessions. del.icio.us Tags: Windows Phone,Cloud,Architecture
