• Can't connect Alienware M11x wireless to internet thru families router

  Morning All, Have an Alienware M11x loaded with Win 7 Premium with the Dell half card wifi. Also have a Netgear and Belkin USB external adapters (b/g and N to include dual radios. No joy either. Families Internet is served thru Charter and they use a Motorola Router. No matter if we reset the router, I cannot connect to the Net but can talk to the router. BTW... my brother only uses WEP as a number of connected items are old and my folks are not in a high threat area for attacks. Frustrated, as I know what I'm doing but this really has me stumped. Any thoughts? Much appreciated, Jim

• Connected to internet but can't browse after trying to remove Covenant Eyes

  I recently got a MacBook Pro. It connects to ethernet\wifi and has internet but when I open Safari or Firefox, nothing happens. I get a timeout for all websites. I had Covenant Eyes on my Mac before and tried to remove it. My friends who work with computers have tried everything (ping, nslookup etc). Network diagnostics show no problems I can see I'm connected through ifconfig because I get an IP. I also get a response pinging www.google.gr. There are no proxies set in my Network preferences. Any ideas?

• Flash stream makes my internet slow and cpu rush

  When I try to watch a live Flash stream, my CPU usage goes up to 75% and my Internet speed goes down. If I run a test before the video-stream, my speed is ~40/10Mbps and during the stream it drops to 0.1-0.5Mbps. The stream is laggy and I can only watch one to two seconds at a time, start/stop/start/stop. I have cleared my history, cache, cookies, temp files, and so on. I have searched for malware and took care of that. I have updated my drivers, reinstalled Flash and everything else I can think of, but it remains slow. I had this problem before and it just started working normally from one day to another. Could it be a hardware problem?

• Wi-fi signal with keeping the internet cable

  So the situation is that I have Ethernet cable which provides internet to my computer. Thing I want is to have wi-fi connection in my house and Ethernet cable (like I have before) to use for my PC. I will use wi-fi for my laptop and mobile phone. I think I need router for that and I'm looking at Asus RT-N16 (suggested in Coding Horror) for it, but I am not sure. Is it the right thing for me and I will be able to get wi-fi signal and keep the Ethernet cable? I guess the system will be that current cable goes into router, router provides wi-fi signal and gives back new cable... or something like that. Thanks in any advice! • Netgear genie says my Internet is off, while Windows claims I am connected

  I'm connected via wifi to my ISP's router/modem. While Windows says that I'm always connected, I keep getting messages from Netgear Genie that I've lost contact to the Internet, and I cannot access webpages until it comes back. There are two other computers in the house, one connected to the router via ethernet, the other via wifi, both seem to have no such problems. I've wondered if Netgear genie itself was the problem, but I am regularly disconnected even if I uninstall it. And I'd rather have it since it accurently tells me if I'm connected or not. Why does windows says I'm online if I can't access any online game, or website ? Is "netgear genie" the problem ? I've removed the connection, recreated it, I've even copied the settings to a usb key from the computer that has wifi access.

• Ubuntu cannot access internet, LAN is fine

  I have an Ubuntu 8.04 LTS server that is directly connected to our Comcast Business Gateway modem and I have configured it with 1 of our 5 allotted Static IPs. My other machines on our LAN can connect to this server (via ssh, web, ping, etc.) but I cannot access this server from outside our network, and this machine cannot get out to the internet either (ping google.com fails with unknown host). • Sharing internet through a wireless ad-hoc in Windows 7

  I'm actually requesting a workaround to share a PPoE wired Internet connection between two laptops using wireless. I've tried sharing it the usual way... New Ad-hoc = Click turn On sharing = etc. I've tried changing all the settings I could find related to the two networks on both machines. Conclusion: Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Is it really buggy, or are my hands growing from the wrong place? I'm almost sure I'm not the only one having this kind of problem. What is the easiest/correct workaround ?

• No internet on some devices, still on WiFi

  Ok, here's the situation. I live with 3 friends, and we often sit in the living room with laptops out. There's a WiFi router in the kitchen, and we have quite a stable connection. The issue, however, is this: sometimes, all of a sudden one of my friends loses internet connection. Even disconnecting/reconnecting to the WiFi network does not help. When we restart the router, though, it works like a charm again. The odd thing is, it happens just for this one Windows 7 laptop. We've switched routers (for a different reason) in the mean time, but the issue remained. This makes me suspect the laptop even more. I realise I've given little details, but I don't really know what to try/do. Any suggestions what it might be?

  I have two VMs in my VirtualBox. Both are FreeBSD and should communicate between each other. I have created network with DHCP enabled and set like this: Server Address 10.10.10.1 Server Mask 255.255.255.0 Lower Address Bound 10.10.10.100 Upper Address Bound 10.10.10.200 My VMs are pinging each other and getting right ip adress. This is what I must have and can´t change. Now I want to access internet from one VM and I found that I must use two network cards but I don´t know how to set the second one. I am new with VirtualBox and this stuff so if you count with this in you answer I would appreciate that. And I have Windows 8 as host system if it´s matter.

So after disconnecting & connecting back, it works proper for some time & the same problem repeats. But if I'm downloading any movie or some file through uTorrent, the connection is not dying.   I want to make my ftp server over the internet i made it on Debian linux computer and i changed the port of it to 201 my local ip is 192.168.1.3 so i can access it from any computer on my network through ftp :// mylocalip:201 it appear to me the login page i login with my linux user and can see the files on my ftp server to make it public i make port mapping on my router for port 201 when i try ftp :// mypublicip:201 it give me the login page and when i entered the login data it is loading infinity without open my ftp server files when i made it over default port 21 it works fine. can any one tell me what is the problem here?

• Internet printing : print to iOS gateway -> AirPrint / something -> Laser printers

  I've done a bit of research on the Internet, and it looks like I'm on a dead end. My goal is to minimize cost, and be able to send and print documents AUTOMATICALLY (may be 10 or 20 pages per day) to a laser printer in a remote office. The preliminary method is to use: iOS 5.1.1 (JB'ed) with 3G connection, HP (or other brands) printer with AirPrint, iCloud's Documents and may be write some launchd scripts to monitor any new documents in iCloud. May be with other software. I am not sure yet. By using the cloud, I can upload new docs to the cloud anywhere in my city, and the iOS will be able to see them within a reasonable amount of time, then print it. But it seems this combo is not workable. Anyone got any advice on how to make this set up work, or propose other alternatives that requires NO PC or Mac? Currently I have a 3GS with 3G connectivity spare. Need to buy a new printer though.

  Hello I had some malware in my computer so I did a bit of manual work to remove it including resetting TCP/IP. Now the malware is gone. I can see my home wireless network and I can get connected to it but when connected I get the Internet wireless connected with limited access message. When I go to the IE I cannot browse. When I tried to ping 192.168.1.1 I got an Error Code 1231 Unconnected Network Problem. I have deactivated my Windows firewall as I thought it could be hyperactive security. Still no luck. I have Norton but it is not active, I have also Avast and AVG installed but they are not active. Any ideas?

• Problem with Win7 connecting to Internet

  Hello, I have had Windows 7 for about a year now and for the first four months it worked perfectly. But for the last 8 months it has been horrible. It will connect to the Internet for about 5 minutes and then just lose connection. It will reconnect in about 5 minues but then it just keeps disconnecting. I ran a virus scan about 2 weeks ago and I found a Trojan on my PC which I removed and dealt with. It was fine after that but now for these last couple days it has been just as bad as before. I think a virus is causing this but I will read any suggestions and tips to help me solve this problem. Thank you. • IPv6 feature in Network Adaptor is Slowing Internet

  The past few days, my internet browsing has become very poor. It's not a matter of speed, as a speed test will give at least 15Mbps. It seems as if my laptop has a hard time actually connecting to the sites. I've found a possible culprit, but don't know why it would affect anything: Going to adapter settings and disabling ipv6, but leaving ipv4, my browsing is back to normal. Re-enabling ipv6 brings back the issue. This is strange though, because I have always had ipv6 enabled. Moreover, using sites to test ipv6 compatibility, I fail with ipv6 enabled on my adapter, and pass when it's disabled. Ideas about why this is happening, and how to fix it?

• Computer connects to lan, but not the internet

  I have a computer with Vista Home that can connect to the router, but it cannot get on the internet. I cannot ping google.com, the request times out. I've tried this on two separate networks and have no trouble with other computers connecting. I've renewed ipconfig, reset winsock, updated the wireless adapter, and the hosts file looks fine. I've tried disabling the firewall as well as a direct wired connection. I did a scan with Norton and it didn't find anything. Is there anything else I can try before resorting to a system restore? Update (Copied from Answer) Windows Update was able to find updates and install them (though, they could have already been downloaded previously). When I pinged Google by using their IP 66.102.9.103, it said it lost 25 percent of the packets. I successfully flushed the DNS but it didn't help. Also, I found safe mode with networking works fine.

• Which internet scenario would be better?

  I currently have an 8mbps (down) / 512kbps (up) telephone ADSL solution. I must say the reliability is excellent, and up until now its been the fastest connection I could get because I don't live in a cable zone. The real speed of my connection is around 7mbps, but sometimes I manage to get the full 8mbps. I use my connection for work, so it needs to be at least 99% reliable. Recently I was told by a guy who lives up the road that he has a wireless connection with an external antenna and his speeds are 20mbps / 512kbps - he's also paying about 1/2 of what I pay for my wired telephone connection. My question is, is wireless internet good enough for a power user who uses his connection for work 8 hours a day, including VPNing into servers remotely. Besides this I also enjoy playing the odd network game, not a WoW freak, but sometimes I do pick up the odd MMORPG and at times do indulge in some semi heavy gaming sprees. Will this wireless latency drive me crazy and seem slow in comparison? Will it be reliable enough, I also live in an area that snows heavily in winter. I guess its a question of - should I go wireless or not. I've only had 1 wireless connection before and that was years ago using iBurst technology and I remember it was terrible for VPN, but I guess the technology might have been improved since then? What do you guys think?

• Internet Connection not working - USB LAN connection - from particular modem

  I am trying to fix Internet connection on a friends Dell inspiron 1720 with XP service pack 3. It has an integrated network card that stopped working, after powering down/up the modem still didnt work I brought it back to my place to try a few things ie check cable, update driver etc... still didnt work. So I bought a USB LAN connector. It didnt work straight away but I went to configure the properties and changed the ConnectionType from AutoSense to 100 BaseT 10BaseT Full_Duplex, I basically just tried them all. From my place when connected to my desktop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. From my place When connected to their laptop - 10 BaseT and 10BaseT Full_Duplex worked. Happy I went back to my friends house confident it would all work, and it didnt. Brought it back to mine and it did. While there, in Network Connections the connection is there recognized, enabled, 'working properly' it just says not connected. Also there is no led on the USB connector While at mine as above except there is an led on the USB connector and it says connected. Other difference I can think of is they have a cable modem, I'm plugged into the back of a Belkin wireless router - would this make a difference? Any other ideas what to try? (Would getting the model of the cable modem help anyone?) The USB connector is "DM9601 USB to Fast Ethernet"

• A star vs internet routing pathfinding

  In many respects pathfinding algorythms like A star for finding the shortest route though graphs are similar to the pathfinding on the internet when routing trafic. However the pathfinding routers perform seem to have remarkable properties. As I understand it: It's very perfromant. New nodes can be added at any time that use a free address from a finite (not tree like) address space. It's real routing, like A*, theres never any doubling back for example. IP addresses don't have to be geographicly nearby. The network reacts quickly to changes to the networks shape, for example if a line is down. Routers share information and it takes time for new IP's to be registered everywhere, but presumably every router dosn't have to store a list of all the addresses each of it's directions leads most directly to. I can't find this information elsewhere however I don't know where to look or what search tearms to use. I'm looking for a basic, general, high level description to the algorithms workings, from the point of view of an individual router.

• Internet Troubles - PPPoE vs PPPoA?

  I have been having some internet troubles at home (ADSL2+ connection in Australia). We get random drop-outs from the authentication connection. It will keep the connection to the DSL service, but we lose authentication and either have to restart the router/modem (its combined, a Belkin one, not sure on model number) or unplug the phone cable, wait about 30 seconds and plug it in again. I've called the ISP (Telstra) a few times, but they only offer limited support when we dont use their supported hardware. Apparently something had happened on their side, they checked the box again (at least it sounded that simple), and told me it would be fine. It wasnt. I've replaced all the filters around the house, but that didnt help either. We do live a little bit away from the exchange (get a sync speed of about 3000/900), so I thought it could be due to line noise but that hasnt helped. Telstra allow both PPPoE and PPPoA connections (which I'm configuring through my router, dont have software on the PC side). I've been running PPPoA the whole time, would it make any difference changing it to PPPoE? If not, are there any other theories as to why we would be experiencing these drop-outs? It has been fine for at least 12 months, then suddenly started about 2 months ago.

It comes back shortly, without even a router/modem/computer restart. This happens as frequently as every ten minutes. Occasionally (not often) it will last as long as an hour or two without dropping. When it drops, I can get it back almost immediately by clicking Reconnect in the OpenVPN GUI and letting that do it's thing. It's worth noting that I'm in China. Calling support is a bit difficult because of that. Also I don't really understand all of the router's software, although I've got it generally figured out. I've tried a bunch of stuff, attempts to diagnose and/or fix the problem. No success with any of the following: I've power cycled both the modem and the router. I've tried an ethernet connection to the router. I've connected without the VPN. I've disabled IEEE authentication on all connections. I've checked for viruses. I've tried lifting it off the ground so as to prevent overheating.
