• What could cause a program to stay in "Add/Remove Programs" even after removing from registry

  Trying to manually remove an entry from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs. (custom software, not MS KB patch or windows component and not doing anyting 'funky' like trying to stop itself form being uninstalled) Followed http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314481 removing all applicable registry keys for program from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\ and even tried rebooting but still it persists. Double checked followed KB314481 and search for program name doesn't return any other matches in that part of the registry. Any ideas what would cause this or how to solve?

• Exchange 2007 Email Address Policies

  We have recently upgraded to Exchange 2007 (from 2003) and have noticed the change from recipient policies to email address policies. We have two separate domains (let's call them domaina.com and domainb.com) we receive email for, have email address policies and both email address policies are not applied. In our Exchange 2003 environment, domaina.com was the default email address when we created new mailboxes and due to the migration, domainb is the default (and its email address policy is a higher priority). Now, when we create a new mailbox (or edit existing ones), the primary email address becomes domainb.com. Now the question is, is this as simple as putting the email address policies in the correct order? Do I have to apply both policies? What effect will the above changes make to existing mailboxes? Since we do not have any conditions set on the policies, I assume prior to making these changes, I should force all domainb mailboxes to not automatically update email address based on policy? • DNS subdomain problem - Hover.com

  I use hover.com to manage my domain names. I have having a huge problem with setting a sub-domain to a specific IP address: I want the sub-domain on a particular domain name that I have. I set an A type record for that sub-domain and pointed it towards the IP address; it is not working at all. The thing that is confusing me is that when I set the IP address to a sub-domain on a different domain name it works just fine. Also, I have since deleted the DNS record from the domain that it happened to work on, and when I type that address into a browser it still resolves to the IP I had it set to. I am not sure what is going on at all. If this seems confusing I am sorry, but I am very confused about the whole thing myself. If any clarification is needed, just ask and I will try to clear things up.

• Accessing the Local System Account to accept a software licence

  Hi All, I have a server at the moment running ColdFusion which is being used to access a windows whois program on the server. Each time I call this command via ColdFusion (using cfexecute) the command times out. I believe the issue is because the first time a user runs the .exe file they are asked to accept the licence. ColdFusion is currently set to run under the Local System account and I am just wondering if it is possible to somehow log into this account and run the program manually via the console so that I can accept the licence. I guess my only other option is to change the account ColdFusion runs under, but I would rather not do this.

• MySQL database Int overflow and can't login in.

  I have a MySQL database on my server and I"m pretty sure it's an int over flow on one table with an auto_increment field that's crashing it. I can delete the table, it's not very important, but I can't get into the server. Is there anyway to delete that database from the file system or without logging into MySQL? HELP! THE WORLD IS ENDING!

• Dell Latitude E6420 dual-boot Ubuntu + Windows 7 Optimus graphics problems

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors? • Setup automated calling during an ETL failure

  Just started working on a large data warehouse project that runs some large ETLs every night. In the event of an error I receive an email, but I was hoping to somehow create something that will automatically call me, so I don't have to wake up and check my email at 4 every morning to make sure the ETLs finished properly. I know I can setup an SMS pretty easily, but I don't think that will be enough to wake me up :) Anyone have any experience trying to do this before?

• Cisco ASA user authentication options - OpenID, public RSA sig, others?

  My organization has a Cisco ASA 5510 which I have made act as a firewall/gateway for one of our offices. Most resources a remote user would come looking for exist inside. I've implemented the usual deal - basic inside networks with outbound NAT, one primary outside interface with some secondary public IPs in the PAT pool for public-facing services, a couple site-to-site IPSec links to other branches, etc. - and I'm working now on VPN. I have the WebVPN (clientless SSL VPN) working and even traversing the site-to-site links. At the moment I'm leaving a legacy OpenVPN AS in place for thick client VPN. What I would like to do is standardize on an authentication method for all VPN then switch to the Cisco's IPSec thick VPN server. I'm trying to figure out what's really possible for authentication for these VPN users (thick client and clientless). My organization uses Google Apps and we already use dotnetopenauth to authenticate users for a couple internal services. I'd like to be able to do the same thing for thin and thick VPN. Alternatively a signature-based solution using RSA public keypairs (ssh-keygen type) would be useful to identify user@hardware. I'm trying to get away from legacy username/password auth especially if it's internal to the Cisco (just another password set to manage and for users to forget). I know I can map against an existing LDAP server but we have LDAP accounts created for only about 10% of the user base (mostly developers for Linux shell access). I guess what I'm looking for is a piece of middleware which appears to the Cisco as an LDAP server but will interface with the user's existing OpenID identity. Nothing I've seen in the Cisco suggests it can do this natively. But RSA public keys would be a runner-up, and much much better than standalone or even LDAP auth. What's really practical here?

• Anonymous Login attemps from IPs all over Asia, how do I stop them from being able to do this?

  We had a successful hack attempt from Russia and one of our servers was used as a staging ground for further attacks, actually somehow they managed to get access to a Windows account called 'services'. I took that server offline as it was our SMTP server and no longer need it (3rd party system in place now). Now some of our other servers are having these ANONYMOUS LOGIN attempts in the Event Viewer that have IP addresses coming from China, Romania, Italy (I guess there's some Europe in there too)... I don't know what these people want but they just keep hitting the server. How can I prevent this? I don't want our servers compromised again, last time our host took our entire hardware node off of the network because it was attacking other systems, causing our services to go down which is really bad. How can I prevent these strange IP addresses from trying to access my servers? They are Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise 'containers' (virtual machines) running on a Parallels Virtuozzo HW node, if that makes a difference. I can configure each machine individually as if it were it's own server of course... UPDATE: New login attempts still happening, now these ones are tracing back to Ukraine... • Find users that are auto forwarding / redirecting their email in Exchange 2010 using Powershell

  We are using Live@edu, which is essentially hosted exchange server with some additional features and limitations to work around, and I'm trying to find everybody that is forwarding or redirecting emails from their accounts. I am trying to remove old accounts that have not been used, but we have instructions for users on redirecting emails, so we should expect that some users are indeed redirecting their emails, which will make their last login/logoff times not reflect whether they are indeed using auto forwarding or auto redirecting rules. How could I find a list of users with forwarding or redirection rules using Exchange 2010 Powershell Cmdlets? /EDIT: It may be sufficient for my purposes to find whether there are ANY server side rules, regardless of whether the rule forwards/redirects or does some other action.

• ESXi - Should failover node be in the same geographic location?

  For some reason it seems to me that at least one failover should be in the same building. But really I have no idea. Could there be an issue with routing delays for users during a failure? I'm just imagining reasons at this point. Let me know, should at least one failover node be at the same geographic location as the other? I am trying to prevent what appears to be a poor decision so any feedback or life experience you can share would be grand. Will mostly be running Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008 as our guest OS.

• update nokia app installed via ovi

  I've installed a version of a very handy application (Nokia Battery Monitor 1.1) and was quite pleased to see a v1.2 out recently. The problem is that I cant seem to update this app on my phone via the ovi app; the 'download' link is disabled. Also tried the 'sw update' app, but it reports that all applications are up-to-date. Any idea how do this without installing/reinstalling the app? The phone model is Nokia 5800

• HTTPS version of page throws 404, regular HTTP appears fine?

  I'm having a strange issue with a website in IIS on Windows Server 2003. It has a valid wild card certificate on it, however when I use HTTPS on the page I get a 404 not found. Without HTTPS it shows up fine. Also, if I go to the domain root of the site using HTTP the homepage shows up, but with HTTPS it REDIRECTS ME to a totally different website installed on the same IIS server. I am quite confused. I tried giving each site a unique IP address but it didn't change anything, I also tried changing the SSL ports, no luck. This IIS is setup to run PHP also. What could I check to resolve this?

• What is involved in upgrading from SSL 2.0 to SSL 3.0 in IIS 6?

  I am using a site security testing suite and it says SSL 2.0 has known vulnerabilities and I should change it to SSL 3.0. Will my current certificates still work once I switch to SSL 3.0? How do I make the switch? Is it only in IIS or could I need to change anything on my web application? Thanks

• USB mouse shuts down the laptop!

  For the past two days, whenever I plug in my USB mouse (which has been working for a long time, previously) into the laptop, my computer restarts! I tried changing mice, but the same thing happens. I have 3 ports, usually, I try one port and the laser does not come on, then I try another one and the laser comes and and off, then I again take out and put it in any port and the damn thing just turns off the computer. • Add entire 300 GB filesystem to Git Annex repository?

  By default, I get an error that I have too many open files from the process. If I lift the limit manually, I get an error that I'm out of memory. For whatever reason, it seems that Git Annex in its current state is not optimised for this sort of task (adding thousands of files to a repository at once). As a possible solution, my next thought was to do something like: cd / find . -type d | git annex add --$NONRECURSIVELY find . -type f | git annex add # Need to add parent directories of each file first or adding files fails The problem with this solution is that there doesn't seem from the documentation to be a way to non-recursively add a directory in Git Annex. Is there something I'm missing or a workaround for this? If my proposed solution is a dead end, are there other ways that people have solved this problem?

• Slow write speeds on new Gigabit home file server

  So I finally got all my parts delivered to setup a home file/backup server this week. It's currently running Ubuntu Server and I'm using Samba to share files on my network. The server currently has a 2TB WD Green drive in it connected to a Asus M5A78L-M This is then connected via CAT6a to my new Gigabit switch (TP-Link TL-SG1005D). My home desktop is then also connected to this switch and again also through CAT6a cable. Currently when transfering files I will get a perfect 100MB/s read from the server to my Windows machine. When copying from my Windows machine to the server I get around 30/38MB/s. I know this drive is capable is faster speeds so would anybody have an idea of where the bottleneck is? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) EDIT: I have found ftp's write speed is much closer to what my Samba read speed is so I'm going to give it a guess that is a software problem rather than hardware

• Windows Server 2003/Exchange 2007: How to setup public domain mail.foo.com to route to internal exch

  Good day, I have an internal Exchange Server 2007 and a Windows Server 2003 domain. At this point in time I have an external DNS setup (DynDNS 29.95 service) to resolve foo.com to my singular public IP address then it gets routed to external facing site. I would like to know how to setup POP on mail.foo.com and SMTP on smtp.foo.com, and more importantly, what needs to be setup in Exchange server to allow for this to happen. My end state is to send email through smtp.foo.com and receive mail on mail.foo.com. As of now, when I create a user within Exchange the default email address is [email protected], and I would like it to be [email protected]. Thank you and I appreciate the help as I am a .NET developer trying to do sys admin work, and it is MUCH harder than I have ever imagined, my hat is off to all sys admins and IT pros.

• tomcat 6 start mode setting for production

  Tomcat 6 (as a windows service) seems to have a 'Start Mode' with options of 'java, jvm or exe' which can be set via the Tomcat Monitor (system tray icon). if I set this to 'java', I can see a forked 'java.exe' process for tomcat, if I chose either of the other two, I dont see a separate process. Anyway, would like to know if anyone has any information about what these settings mean and which one would be most appropriate in production.

• CPU clock scales down so computer is unusable after switching to battery

  When I am plugged in my laptop runs great however when I unplug it and I'm on battery power my CPU clock speed scales down pretty much all the way. I know this is happening by monitoring the clock speed. When plugged in it will usually stay between 1000MHz and 3000MHz but when I unplug it it quickly scales down to less than 500MHz and will get as low as 100MHz and it will NEVER scale up at all on battery power. After I plug the power back in it will then begin operating normally in about a minute. I have tried setting the MIN and MAX CPU performance in power options to 100% and have tried messing around with cooling settings which seemed to be a problem with HP laptops. I have a Toshiba Satellite M500-ST6444 running Windows 7. The BIOS is up to date. I have tried two versions.

  In nginx 1.2 & 1.3 you can modify the source to change the name: src/http/ngx_http_header_filter_module.c (lines 48 and 49): static char ngx_http_server_string[] = "Server: Not Nginx" CRLF; static char ngx_http_server_full_string[] = "Server: Not Nginx/1.0" CRLF; Renaming those and recompiling the source changes the server response name in nginx 1.2. However doing this in 1.3 does not seem to change the name. It still says nginx/1.3.5 and with server_tokens off; it just says nginx. How can I change the server name in 1.3 without installing the 3rd party addon headers more? I want to compile from source.

• growing EBS RAID volume

  I've created a RAID0 configuration with two 1GB EBS volumes, mounted at /dev/md0 using mdadm and formatted with XFS Next, I copied some files over to fill the volume to around 30% of its capacity (of 2GB) I then created snapshots of the volumes using ec2-consistent-snapshot and created volumes of the said snapshots but specified the volume size to be 2GB (effective doubling the capacity on each disk) I then spun up a new instance, assembled the RAID0 configuration on /dev/md0 from the 2 volumes mentioned above and mount it to /vol df -hT showed /vol as 2GB (as expected) Now I ran sudo xfs_growfs -d /vol. The command completed normally but reported blocks changed from 523776 to 524160 (only!) and df -hT still showed /vol as 2GB (instead of the expected 4GB) I rebooted, remounted, reassembled the RAID but it still reports the old size. EDIT: trying to grow the RAID using mdadm --grow yields mdadm: raid0 array /dev/md0 cannot be reshaped Is there any other way I can grow a RAID0 array?
