  • Editing a .class file directly, playing around with opcodes

    Hi, today I just tried to play a little bit around with the opcodes in compiled java class file. After inserting iinc 1,1 the java virtual machine responds with: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassFormatError: Truncated class file at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(ClassLoader.java:632) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass(ClassLoader.java:616) at java.security.SecureClassLoader.defineClass(SecureClassLoader.java:141) at java.net.URLClassLoader.defineClass(URLClassLoader.java:283) at java.net.URLClassLoader.access$000(URLClassLoader.java:58) at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:197) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:190) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:307) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:248) Could not find the main class: Test. There's only one section in the resulting class file, which contains 0x84: [..] 8401 0184 0101 8401 01[..] So I would translate this as: iinc 1,1 iinc 1,1 iinc 1,1 corresponding to my i++; i++; i++; I then tried to append just 840101 to increment the variable once more, but that didn't work and resulted in the ClassFormatError. Is there anything like a checksum for the class file? I looked up the format of a classfile in http://java.sun.com/docs/books/jvms/second_edition/html/ClassFile.doc.html but could not find anything which points out to some kind of bytes_of_classfile or something. I also don't understand why the error is "Truncated Class File", because I did append something :-) I know its not a good idea to edit class files directly, but I'm just interested on the VM internals here.

  • Maven 2.1.0 not passing on system properties to Java virtual machine

    We use the command line to pass on system properties to the Java virtual machine when running our Hudson builds on a Linux box. It used to work quite well in 2.0.9 by since we upgraded to 2.1.0 it has stopped working altogether. The system properties just never make it to the Java virtual machine. I have created a small test project and indeed it does not work at all. I have attached it in case you want to give it a go. This should work just fine with Maven 2.0.9: mvn2.0.9 -Dsystem.test.property=test test But this will fail: mvn2.1 -Dsystem.test.property=test test The Java code simply does this assertTrue( System.getProperty("system.test.property") != null); , Apr 20, 2009; 12:44pm edward eric pedersson

Is there a performance gain in using a ref or out parameter instead of the standard return value?   • Correct way to (re)launch a Java application with hardware-dependent VM parameters?

    EDIT I don't want to use Java Web Start I've got a Java application that I'd like to run with different VM parameters depending on the amount of memory the system it is launched on has. For example if the machine has 1 GB of memory or less I'd like to pass "-Xmx200m" and "-Xmx400m" if it has 2 GB and "-Xmx800m" if it has 8 GB (these are just examples). Is there a portable way to do this? I've tried having a first tiny Java app (hence portable) that determines the amount of memory available and then launches a new Java app but I don't think this is very clean. As of now I've written Bash shell scripts that invoke the Java app with the correct parameters depending on the config but it only works on Linux on OS X. What is the correct way to solve this? Would application packager package ;) help ?

  • Computationally intensive scala process using actors hangs uncooperatively

    I have a computationally intensive scala application that hangs. By hangs I means it is sitting in the process stack using 1% CPU but does not respond to kill -QUIT nor can it be attached via jdb attach. Runs 2-12 hours at 800-900% CPU before it gets stuck The application is using ~10 scala.actors. Until now I have had great success with kill -QUIT but I am bit stumped as to how to proceed. The actors write a fair amount to stdout using println which is redirected to a text file but has not been helpful so far diagnostically. I am just hoping there is some obvious technique when kill -QUIT fails that I am ignorant of. Or just confirmation that having multiple actors println asynchronously is a real bad idea (though I've been doing it for a long time only recently with these results) Details scala 2.8.1 & 2.8.0 mac osx 10.6.5 java version "1.6.0_22" Thanks

    I have a program that takes input from stdin and also takes some parameters from command line. It looks like this: cat input.txt myprogram -path "/home/user/work" I try to debug the code with gdb inside emacs, by M-x gdb, I try to load the program with the command: gdb cat input.txt myprogram -path "/home/user/work" However, gdb does not like it. Question cribbed from here. Unfortunately I don't understand the solution and am not sure what to do beyond compiling with the -g option and running the command M-x gdb.

  • Please help with passing multidimensional arrays

    Hi, I'm writing a simple test program to pass multidimensional arrays. I've been struggling to get the signature of the callee function. void p(int (*s)[100], int n) { ... } In the code I have: int s1[10][100], s2[10][1000]; p(s1, 100); This code appears to work, but it's not what I intended. I want to the function p to be oblivious whether the range of values is 100 or 1000, but it should know there are 10 pointers. I tried as a first attempt: void p(int (*s)[10], int n) // n = # elements in the range of the array and also: void p(int **s, int n) // n = # of elements in the range of the array But to no avail can I seem to get this correct. I don't want to hardcode the 100 or 1000, but instead pass it in, but there will always be 10 arrays. Obviously, I want to avoid having to declare the function: void p(int *s1, int *s2, int *s3, ..., int *s10, int n) FYI, I'm looking at the answers to a similar question but still confused.

  • Why two subprocesses created by Java behave differently?

    I use Java Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command) to create a subprocess and print its pid as follows: public static void main(String[] args) { Process p2; try { p2 = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd); Field f2 = p2.getClass().getDeclaredField("pid"); f2.setAccessible(true); System.out.println( f2.get( p2 ) ); } catch (Exception ie) { System.out.println("Yikes, you are not supposed to be here"); } } I tried both C++ executable and Java executable (.jar file). Both executables will continuously print out "Hello World" to stdout. When cmd is the C++ executable, the pid is printed out to console but the subprocess gets killed as soon as main() returns. However, when I call the .jar executable in cmd, the subprocess does not get killed, which is the desired behavior. I don't understand why same Java code, with different executables can behave so differently. How should I modify my code so that I could have persistent subprocesses in Java. Newbie in this field.     I am beginning to think I am doing something wrong. I mean they did place System.String.IsNullOrWhitespace finally but no ArgumentEmptyException class. public FilterItem(string name, IEnumerable<string> extensions) { if (string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(name)) { throw new ArgumentNullException("name"); } if (extensions == null) { throw new ArgumentNullException("extensions"); } if (extensions.Count() == 0) { throw new ArgumentOutOfRangeException("extensions"); } this.Name = name; this.Extensions = extensions; } throwing an ArgumentOutOfRangeException feels unnatural. Also an instance of ArgumentException is too general in my opinion. It's easy to me to create a new exception class call it this way and have it over with. What bugs me is that it's not in the BCL/FCL and I am beginning to think there's a good reason not to have it. Should there be one?

For this line,using qsort: qsort(catalog, MAX ,sizeof catalog, struct_cmp_by_amount); I get this warning: warning: passing argument 4 of ‘qsort’ makes pointer from integer without a cast struct_cmp_by_amount is another function on the program. BUT,for another program with the same code, with the same exactly struct_cmp_by_amount function, i dont get that warning for the 4th argument! qsort(structs, structs_len, sizeof(struct st_ex), struct_cmp_by_price); I'm wandering about why that;s happening. Have you any idea?

    My main field is .Net but recently I have got something to do with Java. I have to create a shell utility in Java that could run in background reading few database records after specified duration and do further processing. It's a kind of scheduler. Now I have few concerns: How to make this work as a service. I want to execute it through a shell script and the utility should start running. Off course the control should get back to the calling script. Secondly, eventually i may want to stop this process from running. How to achieve this? I understand these are basic question but I really have no idea where to begin and what options are best for me. Any help / advise please?

  • Newlines not being interpreted when passed to php via the command line

    I have a PHP script that I'm invoking from another shell script that sends an automated email with a message generated from the shell script. Problem is, when I send the message all the newline characters are printed into the message. How do I get them to be interpreted? sendmail.sh: /path/to/phpscript/sendmail.php "Some Message With Newlines\nHello World.\n" sendmail.php: $message = $argv[1] . "\nNewline"; $smtp->send($to, $from, $message); The odd thing is the \n after the $argv variable is interpreted and actually prints Newline on a new line, but the newlines in the $argv variable don't, I have tried wrapping the variable in double quotes among other things but so far to no avail.

    I am trying to use notepad++ as my all-in-one tool edit, run, compile etc. I have jre installed, i have setup my path variable to .../bin directory. When I run my "Hello world" in notepad++ , I get this message: java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: test_hello_world : Unsupported major.minor version 51.0 at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClass1(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.defineClassCond(Unknown Source) ......................................... I think the problem here is about versions, some version of java may be old or too new. how do i fix it? should i install jdk , and setup my path variable to JDK instead of jre? difference between PATH variable in jre or jdk?

    A very standard example of the problem that I am facing is that of a custom content say blog type. Now there is a view namely "My Blog Posts". In that view i take the argument as User:uid. Now, for the link part i simply write the code below: global $user; and send $user-uid as the argument to User:Uid. This give me link for "My Blog Posts" or the blog posts of the logged-in user What I want is a view like "His Blog Posts". So, if i visit the profile of some other user. There should be a tab in his profile "Blog Posts by Me". So for that i need to have the UID of the user whose profile I am visiting. So, how can I get this parameter from URL of his profile or somevhere else.
