  I'm working on stimulanting projects at my job. I like it. I like programming! I have accumulated several years of experience now. Sometime happens I develop other projects (even more stimulant of my main job). Some more money cannot hurts! The problem is that my free time has decreased a lot, leading me to develop until late evening. I usually program each day (I like to develop my own projects, even if only a few lines at a time). But it is one thing to plan for my pleasure, it is one thing to plan for business. So, my question is how to balance free time with these additional jobs? What experiences do you have? How much you can develop for long time (in a medium interval, say, weeks)? Every thought is welcome!

• How to get the data for intra-day candlestick charts for stocks on eg Nasdaq

  Hi, For a learning exercise, i'm wanting to create candlestick (stock) graphs for stocks using zedgraph. Now on google finance, i can get daily open-high-low-close data which is perfect for making these graphs, but i'm wanting to create intra-day graphs, eg open-high-low-close data for an hour (or 5 mins, or 1 min even). Is there any way to get that kind of data without having to subscribe to any expensive service? I've heard opentick mentioned in an old SO question, but their site is defunct now. I was thinking of polling google finance once a minute to get the latest stock price, then with an hour's worth of 60 prices, i could then roughly calculate the open-high-low-close, but this is a bit of an estimation and i'm open to other suggestions.   I got a last time (and urgent) requeriment of an "event" that needs to be scheduled the same day of every month. Say of you set the start date on the 1st May you should get the next events on the 1st of Jun, 1 Jul etc. The problem comes with a start date on the 31st (the next ones could be 30 or 28 depending on the month) Considering that there are months with different numbers of days (28,30,31) depending on the month itself and the year... what would ba an easy way to setup this? • Symfony Jobeet Tutorial Day 3, databases.yml error

  Hi all, I'm new to Symfony and I'm going through the Jobeet tutorial v1.4 for Doctrine. I am currently stuck on Day 3. I've followed all the instructions on configuring the database and building models and modules; however, when I try to access "http://localhost:8080/frontend_dev.php" I receive the following error: 'Configuration "config/databases.yml" does not exist or is unreadable.' My config/databases.yml file looks like this: all: doctrine: class: sfDoctrineDatabase param: dsn: 'mysql:host=localhost;dbname=jobeet' username: root password: mysecret Creating the tables and loading the fixtures seem to work fine after checking the database with phpmyadmin. I keep seeing that yahoo/ google/ MS offer this data, yet I cant find HOWTO doc (or similar) on getting the data. Reuters is an option - ~$300/month puts it out of my range. • C# Desktop Application "Encounters an error and has to exit" on first run of the day

  Hello, It seems I tend to attract strange issues. This time, I have written a C# application, and handled most of the exceptions I can find. The problem is, when I run the installed/bundled version on any PC for the first time in a day (after the PC has been shut down and started after a while) it comes across some error and has to shutdown the application (even though the try-catch block surrounding the Main() does not fire). The application does not throw the same error on subsequent runs. I added an #if(!DEBUG) ... #else ... #endif surrounding the Main() code. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

A quesion about RGB color and its usefulness in a simple tiny php code: Imagine I have variable $colorA containning a valid six char color. say B1B100, a greenish natural color. Now If I would like to make a new color from that, which is, say, ten steps lighter thatn that original color, roughly. $colorA = B1B100 // original color php code with little color engine lightening stuff up goes here $colorB = ?????? // original color lightened up Is there a php ready function that KNOWS rgb colors something like php function RGB ( input color, what to do, output color) Where what to do could be +/- 255 values of brightness etc etc. Is something like this already possible or am I day dreaming? rgb($colorA, +10, $colorB) If this does not exist, what would be the shortest code for doing this?   Hello everyone, I would like to know the best practices for running a Service every day at 4AM. The way I think I should be doing it is to create a new repeating alarm using AlarmManager and having it run the service at 4AM. Problem is, I'm not sure where to put the code to set the alarm. Do I do it in my main activity as one of the first tasks in the OnCreate method? Do I do some funky stuff with BroadcastReceivers and intents? What happens when a user updates my app?   Is there an easy way to limit the number of times a view can be accessed by a given IP address per day/week? A simplified version of the technique used by some booksellers to limit the number of pages of a book you can preview? There's only one view that this limit need apply to--i.e. it's not a general limit--and it would be nice if I could just have a variable overlimit in the template context. The solution need not be terribly robust, but limiting by IP address seemed like a better idea than using a cookie. I've looked into the session middleware but it doesn't make any references to tracking IP addresses as far as I can tell. Has anyone encountered this problem?

  I'm having trouble with figuring out the best way to store some data in my database. I've got to store DD/MM dates in a database, but I'm not sure of the best way to store this so that it can be easily sorted and searched. Basically a user will be able to save important dates in the format DD/MM, which they will be reminded of closer to the day. The DATE data type doesn't seem completely appropriate as it includes year, but I can't think of another way of storing this data. It would be possible to include a specific year to the end of all occasions, but this almost doesn't seem right.

• What is the accepted way to replace java.util.Date(year,month,day)

  I'm trying to do something really simple, but starting to realize that dates in Java are a bit of minefield. All I want is to get passed groups of three ints ( a year, a month and a date) create some Date objects, do some simple test on them (along the lines of as date A before date B and after January 1 1990), convert them to java.sql.Date objects and pass them off to the database via JDBC. All very simple and works fine using the java.util.Date(int year,int month,int day) constructor. Of course that constructor is depreciated, and I'd like to avoid using depreciated calls in new code I'm writing. However all the other options to solve this simple problem seem stupidly complicated. Is there really no simple way to do what I want without using depreciated constructors? I know the standard answer to all Java date related questions is "use joda time", but I really don't want to start pulling in third party libraries for such a seemingly trivial problem.

• Reboot windows machines at a certain time of day and automatically login with Python

  I know how to reboot machines remotely, so that's the easy part. However, the complexity of the issue is trying to setup the following. I'd like to control machines on a network for after-hours use such that when users logoff and go home, or shutdown their computers, whatever, python or some combination of python + windows could restart their machines (for cleanliness) and automatically login, running a process for the night, then in the morning, stop said process and restart the machine so the user could easily login like normal. I've looked around, haven't had too terribly much luck, though it looks like one could do it with a changing of the registry. That sounds like a rough idea though, modifying the registry on a per-day basis. Is there an easier way?

• How to use ASP.NET Routing in a Quote of the Day Website

  Good Afternoon, A client is interested in creating an ASP.NET 2.0 website whose purpose is to serve up a "quote of the day". He wants the quotes on static content pages all attached to the same master page. The quote pages must be viewed in a certain sequence, and site browsers cannot view any other pages than the starting page when browsing to the site. That is, everyone must go to page 001.aspx when entering the site. Two Questions: 1. The content pages are going to be created by the client using an excel data source and a merge process by which each quote page is created eg. 001.aspx, 002.aspx etc. This seems clunky to me at best. Would ASP.NET Dynamic Data be a better solution here? I'm new to ASP.NET Routing and URL Rewriting as a whole. How would I setup a route table to ensure that users always entered the site on the same entry page, and create a route table such that default.aspx resolves to 001.aspx? Thanks, Sid

• How to reuse results with a schema for end of day stock-data

  I am creating a database schema to be used for technical analysis like top-volume gainers, top-price gainers etc.I have checked answers to questions here, like the design question. Having taken the hint from boe100 's answer there I have a schema modeled pretty much on it, thusly: Symbol - char 6 //primary Date - date //primary Open - decimal 18, 4 High - decimal 18, 4 Low - decimal 18, 4 Close - decimal 18, 4 Volume - int Right now this table containing End Of Day( EOD) data will be about 3 million rows for 3 years. Later when I get/need more data it could be 20 million rows. The front end will be asking requests like "give me the top price gainers on date X over Y days". That request is one of the simpler ones, and as such is not too costly, time wise, I assume. But a request like " give me top volume gainers for the last 10 days, with the previous 100 days acting as baseline", could prove 10-100 times costlier. The result of such a request would be a float which signifies how many times the volume as grown etc. One option I have is adding a column for each such result. And if the user asks for volume gain in 10 days over 20 days, that would require another table. The total such tables could easily cross 100, specially if I start using other results as tables, like MACD-10, MACD-100. each of which will require its own column. Is this a feasible solution? Another option being that I keep the result in cached html files and present them to the user. I dont have much experience in web-development, so to me it looks messy; but I could be wrong ( ofc!) . Is that a option too? Let me add that I am/will be using mod_perl to present the response to the user. With much of the work on mysql database being done using perl. I would like to have a response time of 1-2 seconds.
