• Upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04, must maintain minimum kernel 2.6.38

  I have a machine running 10.04 and am using BTRFS with lzo compression. I upgraded the kernel to 2.6.38 to enable this (using a PPA). I have my /home folder on a separate (4 TB) BTRFS drive. / is on ext4. My only complaint with this setup is that it uses the old BTRFS tools. How can I upgrade first to 10.10, then 11.04 as required, when 10.10 uses 2.6.35? I don't want it to crash/choke on mounting /home. Will it just let me keep booting the newer kernel I have while upgrading?

• I need to get past my permissions to recover data

  Due to some mishaps, I am unable to boot into Kubuntu at all. However, my data is still on the hard drive. I managed to get one of the other two computers to which I have access to read the disk by booting into a liveCD session of kubuntu. The only storage medium to which I have access is a 30 GB data stick. Here's where the trouble starts: In music alone, I have to back up about 60 GB. Obviously this is going to have to be split into chunks and moved over to the second spare PC until I can reinstall Kubuntu on my laptop. All of the data that needs backed up is behind a permissions wall, so while I can view it, I can't interact with it directly. I know copying and moving through the terminal can get around this with sudo cp or sudo mv, but is there a way to first compress multiple folders in a single archive, then move it? (While we're on the subject, what compression method would be best for large volumes of music in MP3, WAV, and OGG format?)

• VLC Crash when playing MKV files in Windows 7

  I'm not sure if the mkv file is corrupted, but when it is opened with VLC player, VLC loads up and displays nothing. Can't even close VLC after that. And also, VLC is running with 50% of the CPU. I have to use End Process to kill it. How do I know if the file is corrupted? • Using sound forge 6.0 what will be the need to upgrade to latest version

  I had been using sound forge 6.0 not recently but long back. I edit mp3 files for my purpose and some more filters like flange, pan, fade in out, recording, line in recording, extracting sound from video files (mpg, avi(divx), etc...), increasing the default volume, editing treble and bass effects, and etc... I am not going to use it professionally. I use it just like that. Now when i checked i could see Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 is the latest version for my purpose. Others are too high i think. Besides, i had been using Gold Wave version 4 very extensively just to edit sound files mostly mp3. and here is the reason for me to change to sound forge. It is when we edit mp3 files it deflashes(making it raw i think) before editing. after editing if i save it asks for the format to save and i will choose mp3. At this point it again applies the compression process which makes the sound file lossy. When i did the same with sound forge it did not deflash. It just edited the file as mp3.   When I run "cabal update" on my Mac (Snow Leopard, Intel), I get: % cabal update Downloading the latest package list from hackage.haskell.org cabal: Codec.Compression.Zlib: incompatible zlib version Anyone else seeing this? Reinstalling the Haskell Platform hasn't helped. I'm unable to install or update Cabal packages at the moment, so I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

  I get a java.lang.outOfMemoryError exception, while writing a big file to the servletOutputStream. Every response is by default wrapped using a ehcache.constructs.web.filter Object for GZIP compression. And as per the logs, the exception is thrown in the Filter object. Is there a way to increase the available memory so, that the outOfMemoryError Exception does not occur ?

  The MSDN documentation tells me the following: The GZipStream class uses the gzip data format, which includes a cyclic redundancy check value for detecting data corruption. The gzip data format uses the same compression algorithm as the DeflateStream class. It seems GZipStream adds some extra data to the output (relative to DeflateStream). I'm wondering, in what type of a scenario would it be essential to use GZipStream and not DeflateStream?

• CFHTTP and IIS 7 Connection Failture (NOT SSL)

  I'm trying to do a very simple CFHTTP GET call to a local website running on IIS7, however it throws a 408 Connection Failure. I've done all the obvious things: The site is listed in the hosts file locally I've added the CFHTTPPARAM tags for IIS compression issues (deflate;q=0) Surfing to the URL in the browser works fine Doing a CFHTTP to google.com works fine, no local sites work at all. When searching on Google there are others that have had this, but no solutions. Anyone successfully got through this issue?

  I'm trying to use Zlib::Deflate.deflate on a massive file (4 gigs). There are obvious problems with doing that, the first of which being that I can't load the entire file into memory all at once. Zlib::GzipWriter would work, since it works with streams, but it's not zlib compression. Any ideas?

  In Photoshop you can adjust the hue, saturation and lightness of an image with three sliders. ImageMagick you can modulate the brightness, saturation, and hue. Minimizing the saturation correctly produces a black and white image in both programs. Maxing out the saturation appears close, but ImageMagick appears to soften some of the blown out edges while Photoshop will expose more the the compression artifacts. How can I accurately reproduce Photoshop's saturation changes from within ImageMagick, or other command line tool.

The problem is, that I've to rewrite the whole archive if a single file is added. I could get rid of the gzip compression, but adding a file would still be expensive.   Hello :) I'm writing a compressor for a long stream of 128 bit numbers. I would like to store the numbers as differences -- storing only the difference between the numbers rather than the numbers themselves because I can pack the differences in fewer bytes because they are smaller. However, for compression then I need to subtract these 128 bit values, and for decompression I need to add these values. Maximum integer size for my compiler is 64 bits wide. Anyone have any ideas for doing this efficiently? Billy3
