  I am able to get a diaeresis over a letter by Option+u (ë) and an acute accent by Option+e (é). Is there a keyboard shortcut to get both combined? So that the accent is over the letter with a diaeresis?

  I recently ran a software update. I'm not sure if my problems are associated with this but I'm pretty sure they are as I printed successfully before update. • Wake a Mac display from sleep via SSH

  I'm using Jenkins as a CI server, where I'm SSHing into an iMac running OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4) to run some UIAutomation integrations tests on an iOS app. The iMac actually sits 10 ft from me (but across a table) so I'm able to see the screen. However, the tests don't wake up the display, so I often can't see them. Is there a way to wake up the display from the terminal once Jenkins has SSHed in? So far I have tried using Applescript to press an arrow key, and using the Wake Assist application. I also tried setting the wake schedule to be the current date. Finally, I tried using the caffeinate command: caffeinate -t 300 &. The computer's "Wake for Wi-Fi access" checkbox is enabled. So far my best workaround is to just set the iMac to stay awake for atleast 3 hours. However, it'd be nice to keep normal sleep behavior, as I hypothesize that the screen waking from sleep would alert me visually that the integration tests are running. It's also significantly cooler :)

• Mac: Cannot open the parent directory Library

  I really am about to go crazy because nothing worked out. I'm trying to access the Library folder on my OS Lion however all the tutorials related to this subject involves opening the user library however I would like to access the Library where the 'WebServer' folder is located when you enable web-sharing. Whenever I try to access it it gives me the error that I am not allowed to see what's inside and I checked my status, saying that I am an admin but it still occurs. Any help?

  Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

• Installing EclipseFP on Mac OS X

  I am trying to install EclipseFP. I'm running OS X Mavericks. I've tried following both the official installation instructions and the advice in this answer on SU, but I'm still having the same problem. I can get the plugin itself installed painlessly using Help -> Install New Software..., Bbut when I restart and switch to the Haskell perspective, things start to go wrong. The installation instructions tells me that I should receive a prompt to install BuildWrapper and Scion Browser. I do not receive this prompt. Furthermore, if I create a new Haskell project, my code has no syntax highlighting, and the Hoogle search feature does not appear to do anything. It's clear that the plugin is not set up correctly yet. I've tried running cabal update in Terminal, but this does not change anything. After several attempts going round in circles with this on Eclipse Juno, I uninstalled Eclispe and the Haskell Platform and performed a clean install of Eclipse Luna and the latest Haskell Platform. However, the problems are persisting. I've tried going into Preferences to see if I could sort any of this out manually. I should initially point out that my GHC installation seems to be correctly references under Preferences -> Haskell Implementations Under Haskell -> Helper executables, there are areas for configuring the options of both BuildWrapper and Scion Browser. At present, both are blank. I tried clicking the Install from Hackage... button beside each of them with no success; I receive an error message saying Expected executable <workspace>/.metadata/.plugins/net.sf.eclipsefp.haskell.ui/sandbox/.cabal-sandbox/bin/buildwrapper not found!` (replace buildwrapper for scion-browser and the message is the same) The Eclipse console displays the following exception after doing the above with BuildWrapper: src/Language/Haskell/BuildWrapper/GHCStorage.hs:313:32: Not in scope: data constructor ‘MatchGroup’ cabal.real: Error: some packages failed to install: buildwrapper-0.7.4 failed during the building phase. I should point out that my GHC installation appears to be correctly configured under Preferences -> Haskell -> Haskell Implementations. Apologies if any of this information is irrelevant, I'm just not really sure what is important and what isn't at this point. Any help anyone could provide me with would be greatly appreciated.

• itunes 9 on mac skips during play

  Since upgrading to itunes 9 certain songs are ok but other songs skip during play. I tried downgrading to itunes 8 but to no avail. I've tried other music players and some have the same problem and some don't so I think the problem is not with itunes but with the music api. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Cutting up videos (excerpting) on Mac OS X -- iMovie produces super-large files

  I need to cut out parts of a video (+ the associated audio, of course) to make a short clip. For example, take 2 minutes from one location, 3 minutes from another part of the video, 30 seconds from another location and join it all together to form one single clip. The format of the input video is mp4 (H.264 encoding, AFAICR). Don't need very sophisticated merges or transitions from one part to the next, or sophisticated banners (text) on-screen, but some ability to do so would be a plus point. I've done this with iMovie in the past, but where the original file was under 5MB/min of play time, the chopped-up version was over 11MB/min of play time, which to me seems really bad. Is there a better/different way of doing this on OS X? Looking for free (gratis) solutions. OS: OS X 10.9.3

  I am looking for application that will help me organize movies, clips and other videos I have. I tell it a folder to watch, and then I can mark every video there as watched/unwatched, set rating, add description, tag it. And possibility to open with preferred video player (for me — VLC). Option to get all info from imdb or other source will be very good. yFlicks would be a good one, but it uses quicktime, so it doesn't like any non standard codec and container (for example mkv), it doesn't work well on Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

• How to draw unlimited FPS on Mac OS X with OpenGL?

  I d'like to draw as many frames as possible with OpenGL on Mac OS X to measure the performance on different scenes. What I've tried so far: Using a CVDisplayLink that has NSOpenGLCPSwapInterval set to 0, so it does not sync with the Display. But with that it's still stuck at max 60FPS Using normal -drawRect: with a timer that fires 1/1000sec and calls -setNeedsDisplay: Still not more than 60FPS Same as 2. but I call -display in the timer callback. With that I get the FPS above 60, but it still stops at 100-110 FPS. Although the frame rate should easily be at 10times more. Andy idea how I can really draw as many frames as possible?

• Server 2003 Filter mobile devices via MAC

  At one of my client's sites I need to keep my users unauthorized devices off the wireless. They all know the SSID and Password because many of them have laptops that need the wireless. I'm running out of IP address's and we have sent out numerous emails asking them to stay off, but like most users they ignore IT's email. I'm currently running Server 2003 as the GC/DC (but have 2008 servers in place) and 2 Netgear WNAP320. I've seen several posts similar to what I'm looking for but they seem to deal with Linux. My question is how do I go about doing this without migrating (scheduled for the end of the year) to a new server and is it possible to do this within Server 2003? Thanks msindle

The problem is as soon as I also type ssh [email protected] and log in, it wipes the tab name. I want a tab name that's as persistent as the tab, not the level of session I happen to be in.   When I'm at work, I access various intranet pages as well as the wider Internet through ethernet. However, the company LAN blocks some ports (e.g. Google Calendar). I can get to those through WiFi. So, I gave the Airport priority, and then using route add, I set up selective routing: all intranet traffic goes through the ethernet and everything else via WiFi: sudo route add 10.0.0.0/8 <intranet gateway>. However, there are a number of intranet sites that have their own DNS; i.e., hr.company.com only resolves on the intranet. The only way that I can get the DNS to work properly is to add the internal DNS server to the Airport DNS listing, however I fear that when I go elsewhere and forget, this will break things. What's the right way to get the DNS to resolve using this setup?

The problem is that, after a while, the machine is going to sleep and a password is required (this is the intended behaviour).   Is it possible to set the VNC display resolution that is independent of the hardware resolution when you are using OS X 10.5 Screen Sharing? I have a macbook and a windows box with 3 monitors. I'd like to use the 3 monitors on my windows box to do work on my macbook when I'm at my desk. When I VNC into the macbook I only get the resolution of the hardware screen (1280x800). Instead I'd like to use two of my monitors on my windows box to display a large VNC screen from my macbook. The scaling options in the VNC clients (TightVNC and Ultr@VNC) do not adjust the actual resolution of the display they just do image processing. My ultimate goal is for someway to have a virtual display on my windows box that is from my macbook that is independent of the macbook's hardware screen.

  So far I had /Applications/play-1.2.5/ added to my $PATH variable. Now I'm working with 2.2.1, which I installed in /Applications/play-2.2.1 and changed in ~/.bash_profile (which is getting sourced at startup). However, when printing $PATH, 1.2.5 is somehow still around: mbp:~ user$ echo $PATH /usr/local/share/npm/bin:/Applications/play-2.2.1:/usr/local/heroku/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/Applications/play-1.2.5:/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/:/opt/X11/bin As far as I now, I only entered $PATH variables in .bash_profile, which looks like this: mbp:~ user$ cat .bash_profile source ~/.git-completion.bash ### Added by the Heroku Toolbelt export PATH="/usr/local/heroku/bin:$PATH" ### Play Framework export PATH="/Applications/play-2.2.1:$PATH" export PATH="/usr/local/share/npm/bin:$PATH" I'm also not sure where the XAMPP extension to the variable comes from.   I'd like to write some documentation that will be written in sections (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc). I'd like to use something that will generate the table of contents in the end or at least have it "linked" up so that when I make changes everything is still accurate (if I merge section 2.1 and 2.2 or something). The end result needs to be in pdf. I don't want to pay $350 for Acrobat Pro either... I've got microsoft word, but every little thing is a pain (for example, having one background of a page be a different color than another). Any ideas on how to create quality documentation in a pdf format?
