• Why is Mac supposedly better than Windows for graphics?

  Ok, people just keep telling me that if you're going to be working with graphics and design and stuff, you should get a Mac. And I just don't get the logic. Because most of these people would be working with Adobe software, which are for both Windows and Mac. To me it seems like their whole argument is based on that "everyone else does". Like, Mac had some graphics software that Windows didn't earlier in history, so most people were using Mac. And since most people were using Mac, new people also started using Mac. And since most people were using Mac, schools and universities used Mac. Which taught new people to use Mac. So they were using Mac. And told everyone they met that everyone they knew were using Mac. And so on. Anyways... What is the deal really? Is there actually any advantage in using Mac for graphics and design and such things? My take is that you pretty much have the same software and both Mac and Windows are powerful enough, support enough RAM, are stable (as long as you don't install lot's of junk or faulty drivers), et cetera. So, can anyone give me a good explanation on this? Is there a real difference or are people just brainwashed?

• setting up synergy (multi-computer shared input devices) new to mac

  I've just gotten a mac and the first thing I'm trying to do in setting it up for dev is to set-up synergy. I've run into countless issues, and am making progress, but that 'mac's just work' theory is getting tired really fast. I'd prefer running the mac as the server, as it's a desktop. why use my pc(laptop) as the server. So i downloaded synergy, and tried to edit the 'synergy.conf' file. First with textmate, then with apple script. Neither of these applications will open the file. Even after changing textmate to use plain text format and switching off a few other things to make it into a plain text editor. No good. Uh, isn't that what these script/text editors are for? Then I found SyneryKM which is a package to run synergy on osx. Took LOTS of fiddling, but I think I finally kinda got it figured out. I've got my pc & mac both running synergy. However, my pc will only connect to synergy using the ip address. No problem, however, my mac won't connect to itself as a synergy server using the IP address. If I use the ip address as a screen in the 'server configuration file', i get a 'Error: unknown screen name mymac'. I know this shouldn't be super complicated, and possibly not the place to find answers about synergy, but I couldn't find a better place, and there has been some talk of synergy here. Any chance somebody can help with this?

• Mac Mail import from Entourage failed

  I am trying to import the entire Folder-structure from Entourage 2008 to Mac Mail on a Mac OS X 10.5.8. First I wanted to export the whole E-Mail Database from Entourage to Desktop as a .rge File. The export got aborted through a message which indicated that my Entourage database is corrupt and that I should rebuild it. I then went over to Mac Mail and imported the Entourage Folder-structure through File/import mailboxes.../Entourage. The bulky import did take some time and the progress bar never reached its full length. But at the end the import was successful. When I checked the imported folder-structure in Mac Mail I noticed that quiet a few Subfolders where missing. I checked Console and saw following message. Mail[2899] Applescript Error: aliasForMailImporter got an error: AppleEvent handler failed. Question: What does that mean and what can I do to get my subfolder-structure over completely?

  I have two partitions, one for windows the other for Mac OS X. Recently, my Mac OS X crashed and my partition rendered unbootable. When I insert Mac OS X's installation CD everything seems normal from startup, to choosing whether to boot from Windows or CD, until the CD boots. The screen flickers and it becomes extremely dark can barely see anything but I can see that it is booted correctly. I tried increasing brightness but that did not work. After hours of trying to read what is on the screen and guessing where to click the installation did not go through... It took more than a couple of hours so I restarted. Now the partition is accessible through Windows but is not bootable. TL;DR Is it possible to install Mac OS X on a visible partition without the CD through Windows XP?... Thanks

What should it look like so that forwarding works correctly? Can I run OSX applications this way at all?

  Hi All, I have a MAC machine running MAC OS Version 10.6.6. I have added my mac machine to a domain controller (which runs Windows version of server) and allow users from domain controller to login. Because of our server migration, we removed the mac machine from old domain controller and added it to the new domain controller. Users in the old domain controller are copied to new domain controller. When I login into mac (which is added to new domain controller) with the domain controller user credentials, I was not able to access my desktop folders and any other folders in my users directory. It says "The folder Desktop can't be opened because you don't have permission its contents" Any idea why I was not able to access my home directory and how can I resolve this issue...!

  Hello, Is there any software out there that can simulate Disk Utility (Mac app) for Windows? I need to reinstall leopard on my Mac because I screwed something up on the current OS. The thing is, the DVD drive is broken on there, so I need to prepare a bootable USB drive from my Leopard DMG file. This is easily done with the Disk Utility app on the Mac. But seeing how my cannot even log on to my Mac right now, I don't know how to prepare that USB stick. The only other machine I have is a PC with Windows 7. • Switching to open folders on a Mac

  How do I easily switch to an open folder on a Mac? In Windows, which I'm used to using, I can see all my opened folders in my vertical taskbar, all I need to do to switch to another window is click on the folder in the task bar. There's no taskbar on a Mac, and when I have a lot of folders opened, ie. lots of Finder windows, how can I switch between them? The way I'm doing it is, I put expose on an active corner and switch that way. However that's still damn hard, because first I have to bring up expose, and then find my window. The folders are placed in a random position between opened apps, the folders are not in a list, and on a big screen I have to scan the whole screen in order to find the one I want... etc. Is it really this hard just to switch to a different folder on a Mac? Is there a taskbar solution on a Mac?

  Hi, i have mac pro and i wanted to install debian on it but i guess i have problem now. i have windows 7 installed on bootcamp partition, before i started installing linux, i created a partition size of 75 gb then i restarted mac and boot it from debian dvd. then i divided that 75 gb to 2 partitions, one is 600 mb freespace other is ext3 formatted. i installed debian (but it just used 1 dvd even though i got 5 dvd downloaded) then mac restarted. but now i cannot even see windows on bootlist. it just let me boot in mac os x now. how can i fix this? thanks

• Extract large zip file (50G) on Mac OS X

  I was trying to move the files to another hard drive. So I archived all my photos in one large zip file using the Mac OS X built-in compress function. But the file failed to extract. I've tried many programs, but none of the programs I tried were able to extract the file. I've tried Mac OS X's extract utility, Stuffit Expander, 7zip (command line), all failed. Mac's archive utility and Stuffit don't seem to support large files, and 7zip's command line version gave an error stating unsupported archive. I have no luck in Windows too as many of my files have Chinese filenames, and couldn't extract to the correct name under Windows. Could anyone please suggest some programs that can support large files, can handle files compressed using Mac OS X's compress function, and can support UTF-8 filename? With or without GUI is fine.   I have a TrueCrypt partition. When I insert it in Mac OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] By the way, as Truecrypt suggested while I'm in Windows, I must make partitions so the OS won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while Mac OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. I think Mac OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker.

  I've got a mac running a Debian VirtualBox which forward the traffic from 8080 on the mac to 80 in the box and from 8443 to 443. The domains with the extension .dev are redirected on the mac to 127.0.0.1 with dnsmasq. The traffic on IP 127.0.0.1 is forwarded from 80 to 8080 and from 443 to 8443 using ipfw. So with this settings, my Debian VirtualBox gets all the traffic of my .dev domains in http or https. What I want is to be able to proxy the traffic of my .dev domains in http and https from my iPad to my Debian VirtualBox on the mac. I've try to setup an HTTP proxy on the ipad but I can only do it for one port (and it's not working with the port 443). Any idea on how I could achieve that ?

  I'm working with a Django project on my Mac (running Leopard) and I want to show it to my team. I've already passed the neccessary port forwards from my router to my Mac's LAN IP address but it doesn't work. I've also tried running the XAMPP server since that always worked with my Windows XP computer but it still doesn't work. Whenever I type my > it's showing a Page Load Error. Is this possibly an issue with an Mac OS X configuration that I need to setup first to allow my port forwards to get in? It's my first time to do this with Mac, perhaps I need to configure something else in network preferences?

  I've scoured the Internet in search of an answer to this question, and as usual with OSX-related topics, I often don't find any deep-dive technical explanations sufficient enough to feel confident doing dangerous things. Here is my question: I have a Mac Pro, running OS X 10.6.2. I have, as my main root/boot disk, a RAID 1 volume called "Mirror1". Mirror1 is comprised of two 1 TB disks. Mirror1, however, is fixed at 640 GB. That's because, I originally took a 640GB disk, bought a terabyte disk, mirrored it (using diskutil appleraid enable), when it synced I removed the 640GB and replaced it with a second 1 TB disk, and synced again. Voila! A single 640 GB replaced by two 1 TB disks in a mirror.. Actually, no. There's still something missing from the equation: Mirror1 needs to be expanded from 640GB to 1 TB to match the partition sizes on each of those disks. How do I do this?   Yes, I hate Objective-c, plus my project will be portable, so I'd like to code as much of it in C++ as possible, ideally 100%. So I have a regular C++ project made with Xcode, and want to open some OpenGL windows. edit: Damn, Glut takes over the app's control with glutMainLoop(), pretty much as SDL does, I'm trying to break free from that schemes. Will try freeglut, although I can't find OSX binaries, and I always have such bad luck trying to compile someone else's code.

  I am developing an app for the iPhone OS devices, and am using a third-party engine which is not well documented but I've made great progress with it anyway. The problem: The engine's developer strongly urges extending from the existing template projects bundled with the engine, but the engine's plist files are Mac OSX project plist files. This is an iPhone engine, and so I cannot understand why the plist file is structured to take keys for Mac OS apps, but that's how it is. I did a FileMerge comparison to ensure there was nothing within the file itself that defined its use for one OS or the other, so I guess it's defined somewhere in the project settings.

  Hi, I am trying to troubleshoot some mysql problems (I have a table I cant seem to delete or drop, it hangs forever) I have 10.5.8 osx, I dont remember how/if I installed mysql, here is what I know: it automatically starts on boot the process looks like this: /usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld --basedir=/usr/local/mysql --datadir=/usr/local/mysql/var --pid-file=/usr/local/mysql/var/Joels-New-Pro.local.pid _mysql 96 0.0 0.0 75884 684 ?? Ss Sat06PM 0:00.02 /bin/sh /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe when I run: /usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld --verbose --help it says: /usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld Ver 5.0.45 for apple-darwin9.1.0 on i686 (Source distribution) it seems to use my.cnf from /etc/my.cnf Now here are my questions: I dont see anything in the startupitems that remotely looks like mysql ls /Library/StartupItems/ BRESINKx86Monitoring ChmodBPF HP IO HP Trap Monitor Parallels ParallelsTransporter 1.) So how does it startup automatically? 2.) How do I start & stop this type of installation?
