  • Corrupted version of WordPad

    Somehow in trying to cleanup my computer's hard drive, I have inadvertently corrupted WordPad, which I have long used for viewing many types of files, including logs (i.e., log4j). Now when I right click one of these files and choose "open with" & WordPad, I get an error (fn is not a valid Win32 application). I've researched this issue, tried reinstalling wordpad.exe; bbut I still get the same error. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Creating a "crossover" function for a genetic algorithm to improve network paths

    Hi, I'm trying to develop a genetic algorithm that will find the most efficient way to connect a given number of nodes at specified locations. All the nodes on the network must be able to connect to the server node and there must be no cycles within the network. It's basically a tree. I have a function that can measure the "fitness" of any given network layout. What's stopping me is that I can't think of a crossover function that would take 2 network structures (parents) and somehow mix them to create offspring that would meet the above conditions. Any ideas? Clarification: The nodes each have a fixed x,y coordiante position. Only the routes between them can be altered.

    Hi - I'm working on a hw problem that asks me this: given a finite set of numbers, and a target number, find if the set can be used to calculate the target number using basic math operations (add, sub, mult, div) and using each number in the set exactly once (so I need to exhaust the set). This has to be done with recursion. So, for example, if I have the set {1, 2, 3, 4} and target 10, then I could get to it by using ((3 * 4) - 2)/1 = 10. I'm trying to phrase the algorithm in pseudo-code, but so far haven't gotten too far. I'm thinking graphs are the way to go, but would definitely appreciate help on this. thanks.

    Can anyone point me to a code example (java preferably) or psuedocode that uses recursion to return a subtree that contains all nodes with keys between fromKey and toKey. So if I was to call Tree.subtree(5,10) it should return all nodes in the BST that have keys between 5 and 10 inclusive - but I can't use loops or helper methods...only recursive calls to the subtree method, which takes fromKey and toKey as parameters.     My program is suppose to count the occurrence of each character in a file ignoring upper and lower case.     All, I'm working on a class project to build a little Connect4 game in Java. My current thinking is to have a class of Columns that have as instance variable a few integers (index, max. length, isFull?) and one ArrayList to receive both the integers above and the plays of each players (e.g., 1's and 0's standing for X's and O's). This is probably going to be split between 2 classes but the question remains the same. My current attempt looks like this: import java.util.ArrayList; public class Conn4Col { public int hMax; public int index; public final int initialSize = 0; public final int fullCol = 0; public ArrayList<Integer>; (...)} Unfortunately, this doesn't compile. The compiler says an is missing where my ArrayList declaration stands. We're just starting objects and we haven't really looked into other instance variables than the basic types.     I'm studing orders of growth "big oh", "big omega", and "big theta". Since I can't type the little symbols for these I will denote them as follows: ORDER = big oh OMEGA = big omega THETA = big theta For example I'll say n = ORDER(n^2) to mean that the function n is in the order of n^2 (n grows at most as fast n^2). Ok for the most part I understand these: n = ORDER(n^2) //n grows at most as fast as n^2 n^2 = OMEGA(n) //n^2 grows atleast as fast as n 8n^2 + 1000 = THETA(n^2) //same order of growth Ok here comes the example that confuses me: what is n(n+1) vs n^2 I realize that n(n+1) = n^2 + n; I would say it has the same order of growth as n^2; therefore I would say n(n+1) = THETA(n^2) but my question is, would it also be correct to say: n(n+1) = ORDER(n^2) please help because this is confusing to me. thanks.
