  • What would you choose for your project between .NET and Java at this point in time ?

    You are just starting a new project and you have these two technologies to choose from, Java and .NET. The project you are working doesn't involve having features that would make it easy to choose between the two technologies (e.g. .NET has this that I need and Java does not) and both of them should work just fine for you (though you only need one of course). Take into account: Performance Tools available (even 3rd party tools) Cross platform compatibility Libraries (especially 3rd party libraries) Cost (Oracle seems to try and monetize Java) Development process (Easiest/Fastest) Also keep in mind that Linux is not your main platform but you would like to port your project to Linux/MacOs as well. You should definitely keep in mind the trouble that has been revolving around Oracle and the Java community and the limitations of Mono and Java as well. It would be much appreciated if people with experience in both can give an overview and their own subjective view about which they would choose and why.

I was reading the release notes for Visual Studio 2013 and .Net 4.5.1 and it mentioned a new/updated Authentication approach. “ASP.NET Identity is the new membership system for ASP.NET applications. ASP.NET Identity makes it easy to integrate user-specific profile data with application data. ASP.NET Identity also allows you to choose the persistence model for user profiles in your application. You can store the data in a SQL Server database or another data store, including NoSQL data stores such as Windows Azure Storage Tables” There’s a great page on the asp.net site that gives an introduction, overview, how to use it, and how to migrate to it. I won’t be doing a new project for awhile at work, but I’ll definitely be looking into this more when I get the time.

    I find completely contradicting reviews for the VERY same book on amazon and even some book writers are rewarding people for good reviews so basically most of the reviews are totally fake ! You can even figure it out from the reviewer name, which you'll similar to the writer's name and assume that they could actually be from the same country and the reviewer is just being helpful, to the book writer of course ! I can't make my mind for which book I should buy ! I only need a book or two that covers the Java associate and professional topics very well, not just an overview, I need a material that covers everything from A to Z. Even though I've been developing in Java for around 4.5 years but I must not know a detail or two. Would someone kindly shed some light on a good book based on actual experience with the book ?   • Samba login before requesting list of shares?

    I'm relatively inexperienced at this and am starting to get a little frustrated: I have a Ubuntu Server with several user accounts. The Samba file server hosts a number of public shares + the home directories of each user as a private share. When connecting to the server using my OSX machine, I am prompted to enter my login data, and get a overview of all the public shares + my accounts home directory share. Exactly the way I want it. How ever, when I connect to the server from a Ubuntu machine, I am never prompted to enter any login data, and can only see the public folders. If a user wants to connect to their home directory on the server, they have to go through "connect to server" and mount their specific private share. Is there anyway to configure Samba or the Ubuntu client in a way that will make the user experience more similar to how it is on my OSX box? Thank you for your time!

  • LaTeX Document eror: too many }'s

    Hello, I have a latex document, which works fine but when ever I try to add in an image with a figure caption it gives me an error saying there are to many }'s. \begin{figure}[h!] \caption{A picture of a gull.} \includegraphics[width=0.5\textwidth]{uml-usecase/overview.png} \end{figure} As far as I can see its right, can anyone figure out where I am going wrong?     I'm looking for an explanation of how a hashtable works - in plain English for a simpleton like me! For example I know it takes the key, calculates the hash (how?) and then performs some kind of modulo to work out where it lies in the array that the value is stored, but that's where my knowledge stops. Could anyone clarify the process. Edit: I'm not looking specifically about how hashcodes are calculated, but a general overview of how a hashtable works.
