• Billboard shader without distortion

  I use the standard approach to billboarding within Unity that is OK, but not ideal: transform.LookAt(camera). The problem is that this introduces distortion toward the edges of the viewport, especially as the field of view angle grows larger. This is unlike the perfect billboarding you'd see in eg. Doom when seeing an enemy from any angle and irrespective of where they are located in screen space. Obviously, there are ways to blit an image directly to the viewport, centred around a single vertex, but I'm not hot on shaders. Does anyone have any samples of this approach (GLSL if possible), or any suggestions as to why it isn't typically done this way (vs. the aforementioned quad transformation method)? EDIT: I was confused, thanks Nathan for the heads up. Of course, Causing the quads to look at the camera does not cause them to be parallel to the view plane -- which is what I need.

• How do people get around the Carmack's Reverse patent?

  Apparently, Creative has a patent on Carmack's Reverse, and they successfully forced Id to modify their techniques for the source drop, as well as to include EAX in Doom 3. But Carmack's Reverse is discussed quite often and apparently it's a good choice for deferred shading, so it's presumably used in a lot of other high-budget productions too. Even though it's unlikely that Creative would go after smaller companies, I'm wondering how the bigger studios get around this problem. Do they just cross their fingers and hope Creative doesn't troll them, or do they just not use Carmack's Reverse at all?

• Does md2 support skeletal meshes?

  I'm creating an FPS game. I'm writing my own game engine. So far all the backend stuff is going great. I'd like to support md2 as the native file format for 3D Objects, but I also want to use skeletal meshes. Does anyone know if the md2 file format supports skeletal meshes? In-case you need to know, I'm going to use blender as my Mesh creation tool and C++ as my programming language... Thanks For got to mention, the engine is based on OpenGL... Alright, for anyone who is reading this, I just found the Doom 3 md5 specifications (http://tfc.duke.free.fr/coding/md5-specs-en.html). It gives you some help on writing a parser (see bottom of link), but the example doesn't support lighting and texture mapping (the second set of example code allows for animation). So when I do a "search" for articles with the word "the": SELECT a.id, a.content, w.name FROM articles a, writers w, articles_to_writers atw WHERE a.id=atw.article_id AND w.id=atw.writer_id AND content LIKE '%the%' article 4 does not show up in the result: ID | CONTENT | NAME ----------------------- 1 | the quick | paul How do I make article 4 still appear in the results even though it has no writers?

• Fullscreen windowed mode in id games

  I run a TwinView, dual monitor system. I like to play games fullscreen on one of the monitors, not spanning both. With wine, this works by just setting it to desktop mode and setting the resolution to that of one screen. For OpenTTD, I used Compiz's Window Rules plugin. But I have a few native games that this doesn't work for. Today's experiment involved Prey (Doom 3 engine) but I've had similar issues with other ID engines. So in short: has anybody found a way of having Prey/OpenAreana/Doom3/etc run in windowed mode but with fullscreen decorations (that is to say, no borders and above the panel)?

  I'd like to create a procmail recipe or Perl or shell script that will send an auto response to the original sender as well as anybody that was copied (either To: or cc:) on the original email. Example: [email protected] writes an email to [email protected] and [email protected] (in the To: field). Copies are sent via cc: to [email protected] and [email protected]. Let's say I have an employee table: ID | Name | Title | Salary ---------------------------- 1 | Bob | Manager | 15285 2 | Joe | Worker | 10250 3 | Al | Worker | 11050 4 | Paul | Manager | 16025 5 | John | Worker | 10450 What I'd like to do is write a query that will give me the above table, along with an averaged salary column, based on the employee title: ID | Name | Title | Salary | Pos Avg -------------------------------------- 1 | Bob | Manager | 15285 | 15655 2 | Joe | Worker | 10250 | 10583 3 | Al | Worker | 11050 | 10583 4 | Paul | Manager | 16025 | 15655 5 | John | Worker | 10450 | 10583 I've tried doing this with a sub-query along the lines of: Select *, (select Avg(e2.salary) from employee e2 where e2.title = e.title) from employee e But I've come to realize that the sub-query is executed first, and has no knowledge of the table alias'd e I'm sure I'm missing something REALLY obvious here, can anyone point me in the right diretion?

• Where can I find game postmortems with a programmer perspective [on hold]

  There are a number of interesting game post-mortems in places like GDC vault or gamastura.com. The post-mortems are generally give with a CEO/manager perspective or a designer perspective, or, more often a combination of both e.g DOOM postmortem But I have not been able to find many post-mortems which are primarily from the programmers perspective. I'm looking for discussions and rational for technical choices and tradeoffs and how technical problems were overcome. The motivation here is to learn what kind of problems real game programmers encounter and how they go about solving them. A perfect example of what I'm looking for is Renaud Bédard's excellent GDC talk on the development of Fez, "Cubes all the way down". Where can I find more like that?

• How to achieve 'forward' movement (into the screen) using Cocos2D?

  I'm interested in creating a 2.5D first-person shooter (like Doom) and I currently don't understand how to implement the player moving forward. The player will also be able to browse around the world (left, right, up, down) via gyroscope control. I plan to only use 2D sprites and no 3D models. My first attempt was to increase the scale of layers to make it appear as if the player was moving toward the objects but I'm not sure how to make it seem as if the player is passing around the objects (instead of running into them). If there are extensions that I should take a look at (like Cocos3D), please let me know. Thanks for the help! Note: I've only created 2D games so was hoping to get guided into the right direction

I have been banging my head trying different string replaces but cant get it right, I would really appreciate some help. Cheers
