  • Perl: catch error without die

    - by Pmarcoen
I'm playing around with error handling and got a little problem. I connect with a database using the DBI module. I do my own error handling by using a subroutine that I call upon an error. I can catch my own dies and handle them just fine but when my database connection fails, the DBI module apparently prints out it's own die : DBI connect(...) failed: ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach) at ... How would I go about catching this ? I tried using $SIG{DIE} like so : local $SIG{__DIE__} = sub { my $e = shift; print "Error: " .$e; }; This is on the bottom of my main file, in this file I also call the connect subroutine that is available in a module of my own. I also tried putting this piece of code on the bottom of my module but it still prints the error without the "Error:" in front of it.

  • Perl TDS character sets

    - by skiphoppy
I'm using the FreeTDS driver with DBD::Sybase, connecting to an MS SQL Server. When I query certain values of certain records, I get this error: DBD::Sybase::st fetchrow_arrayref failed: OpenClient message: LAYER = (0) ORIGIN = (0) SEVERITY = (9) NUMBER = (99) Server , database Message String: WARNING! Some character(s) could not be converted into client's character set. Unconverted bytes were changed to question marks ('?'). This seems to happen for records that contain special Windows character-set characters, such as curly quotes, copied and pasted from people's Outlook and Word messages. Unfortunately, I do not have any control of this database; sanitizing the input on the way in is obviously the way to go, but is not available to me. What FreeTDS settings do I need to change to be able to successfully query these records?

  • Perl : split the string from last occurrence .

    - by kiruthika
Hi All, my $str="1:2:3:4:5"; my ($a,$b)=split(':',$str,2); In the above code I have used limit as 2 ,so $a will contain 1 and remaining elements will be in $b. Like this I want the last element should be in one variable and the elements prior to the last element should be in another variable. Example $str = "1:2:3:4:5" ; # $a should have "1:2:3:4" and $b should have "5" $str = "2:3:4:5:3:2:5:5:3:2" # $a should have "2:3:4:5:3:2:5:5:3" and $b should have "2"

  • Perl: Process Communcation

    - by Shiftbit
    Can anyone explain how I can successfully get my process communicating. I find the perldoc on IPC confusing. What I have so far is: $| = 1; $SIG{CHLD} = {wait}; my $parentPid = $$; if ($pid = fork();) ) { if ($pid == 0) { pipe($parentPid, $$); open PARENT, "<$parentPid"; while (<PARENT>) { print $_; } close PARENT; exit(); } else { pipe($parentPid, $pid); open CHILD, ">$pid"; or error("\nError opening: childPid\nRef: $!\n"); open (FH, "<list") or error("\nError opening: list\nRef: $!\n"); while(<FH>) { print CHILD, $_; } close FH or error("\nError closing: list\nRef: $!\n"); close CHILD or error("\nError closing: childPid\nRef: $!\n); } else { error("\nError forking\nRef: $!\n"); } First Question is what does Perldoc pipe mean by READHANDLE, WRITEHANDLE? Second Questions is can I implement a solution without relying on CPAN or other modules?

  • How can I sort timestamps in perl ?

    - by ablimit
I have several thousand objects with string property in the format of "yyyy-MM-ddTHH:mm:ssZ". I want to sort these objects ordered by time. Is there any useful packages or scripts for this ? (currently I'm just comparing individual numeric values and it seems it's not very efficient and neat)

  • Is there a compelling reason to use quantifiers in Perl regular expressions instead of just repeatin

    - by Morinar
I was performing a code review for a colleague and he had a regular expression that looked like this: if ($value =~ /^\d\d\d\d$/) { #do stuff } I told him he should change it to: if ($value =~ /^\d{4}$/) { #do stuff } To which he replied that he preferred the first for readability (I find the second more readable, but that's a religious debate I'll save for another day). My question: is there an actual benefit to one over the other?

  • Perl WordPress::XMLRPC categories not being set.

    - by Jay
    The following code works fine to upload a new post to a WordPress blog but for the life of me I can't seem to get the categories to be set. The categories exist. I've tried all lower case, tried case-matching, tried the slug version. Nothing works. No matter how I try passing the categories, the post gets assigned only to the default category. I've scoured the web to find other pieces of sample code and none mention the actual code semantics of how to assign post to certain categories using the WordPress::XMLRPC module. use WordPress::XMLRPC; my $o = WordPress::XMLRPC-new; $o-username('username'); $o-password('password'); $o-proxy('http://blogdomain.com/xmlrpc.php'); $o-server() || die "$!"; my $hashref = { 'title' = 'Test New Post 999 555456782', 'categories' = ['Categorie1', 'Categorie2'], 'description' = '<pHere is the content</p', 'mt_keywords' = 'tag1, tag2, tag3', 'mt_allow_comments' = 1, }; my $ID = $o-newPost($hashref, 1);

  • How to mix HTML in Perl

    - by anon
Hi, I need to create a 2 tables in html format. each has 5 rows. 1st Table *) 1st row has FRUITS in it, occupying all columns *) 2nd row has January(month), occupying all columns *) 3rd row has names of some 6 fruits (apple, orange, grapes,...)These names do not change. so this row has 6 columns *) 4th row has rates for each fruit ( 10,20,30..) so this has 6 columns. *) 5th row has corresponding message for each fruit showing as Available or not. 2nd table If it is available the background color for the cell should be green and if not RED. *) 1st row has VEGETABLES in it, occupying all columns *) 2nd row has February(month), occupying all columns *) 3rd row has names of some 6 vegetables (tomato, potato..)These names do not change. so this row has 6 columns *) 4th row has rates for each vegetable ( 10,20,30..) so this has 6 columns. *) 5th row has corresponding message for each vegetable showing as Available or not.If it is available the background color for the cell should be green and if not RED. All this data is read from a file having a particular format, it is price The names of fruits and vegetable do not change , it will be same for both the tables. However, it might be possible that data for a particular fruit/vegetable is not present. if it is not present the the column for that should show N/A with white background. I cannot use MIME:Lite for this. Need to use print <

  • Perl "Day too big" - root cause

    - by azp74
I have been helping someone debug some code where the error message was "Day too big". I know that this springs from localtime and the Y2038 bug (most google results appear to be people dealing with cookies expiring well into the future). We appear to have 'fixed' the problem by using time to get the current date. However, given that none of our original dates should have hit the 2038 issue I'm sceptical that we've actually fixed the problem ... Are there other instances that anyone knows of where one would hit "day too big"?

  • Is perl's each function worth using?

    - by eugene y
From perldoc -f each we read: There is a single iterator for each hash, shared by all each, keys, and values function calls in the program; it can be reset by reading all the elements from the hash, or by evaluating keys HASH or values HASH. The iterator is not reset when you leave the scope containing the each(), and this can lead to bugs: my %h = map { $_, 1 } qw(1 2 3); while (my $k = each %h) { print "1: $k\n"; last } while (my $k = each %h) { print "2: $k\n" } Output: 1: 1 2: 3 2: 2 What are the common workarounds for this behavior? And is it worth using each in general?

  • Fork in Perl not working inside a while loop reading from file

    - by Sag
Hi, I'm running a while loop reading each line in a file, and then fork processes with the data of the line to a child. After N lines I want to wait for the child processes to end and continue with the next N lines, etc. It looks something like this: while ($w=<INP>) { # ignore file header if ($w=~m/^\D/) { next;} # get data from line chomp $w; @ws = split(/\s/,$w); $m = int($ws[0]); $d = int($ws[1]); $h = int($ws[2]); # only for some days in the year if (($m==3)and($d==15) or ($m==4)and($d==21) or ($m==7)and($d==18)) { die "could not fork" unless defined (my $pid = fork); unless ($pid) { some instructions here using $m, $d, $h ... } push @qpid,$pid; # when all processors are busy, wait for child processes if ($#qpid==($procs-1)) { for my $pid (@qpid) { waitpid $pid, 0; } reset 'q'; } } } close INP; This is not working. After the first round of processes I get some PID equal to 0, the @qpid array gets mixed up, and the file starts to get read at (apparently) random places, jumping back and forth. The end result is that most lines in the file get read two or three times. Any ideas? Thanks a lot in advance, S.

  • How can I resume downloads in Perl?

    - by Neeraj
I have a project that depends upon some other binaries to be downloaded from web at install time. For this what i do is: if ( file-present-in-src/) # skip that file else # use wget to download the file The problem with this approach is that when I interrupt a download in middle, and do invoke the script next time, the partially downloaded file is also skipped (which is not desired), also I want wget to resume the download of the partially downloaded file. How should I go about it: Possible Solutions I could think of: Let the file to be downloaded to some file say download_tmp. Move to original file if successful. Handle SIG{'INT'} to write proper cleanup code. But none of these could help resume the partial file download, Any insights?

  • Renaming and Moving Files in Bash or Perl

    - by Katie
HI, I'm completely new to Bash and StackOverflow. I need to move a set of files (all contained in the same folder) to a target folder where files with the same name could already exist. In case a specific file exists, I need to rename the file before moving it, by appending for example an incremental integer to the file name. The extensions should be preserved (in other words, that appended incremental integer should go before the extension). The file names could contain dots in the middle. Originally, I was thinking about comparing the two folders to have a list of the existing files (I did this with "comm"), but then I got a bit stuck. I think I'm just trying to do things in the most complicated possible way. Any hint to do this in the "bash way"? It's OK if it is done in a script other than bash script.

  • Extract string between matching braces in Perl

    - by Srilesh
    My input file is as below : HEADER {ABC|*|DEF {GHI 0 1 0} {{Points {}}}} {ABC|*|DEF {GHI 0 2 0} {{Points {}}}} {ABC|*|XYZ:abc:def {GHI 0 22 0} {{Points {{F1 1.1} {F2 1.2} {F3 1.3} {F4 1.4}}}}} {ABC|*|XYZ:ghi:jkl {JKL 0 372 0} {{Points {}}}} {ABC|*|XYZ:mno:pqr {GHI 0 34 0} {{Points {}}}} { ABC|*|XYZ:abc:pqr {GHI 0 68 0} {{Points {{F1 11.11} {F2 12.10} {F3 14.11} {F4 16.23}}}} } TRAILER I want to extract the file into an array as below : $array[0] = "{ABC|*|DEF {GHI 0 1 0} {{Points {}}}}" $array[1] = "{ABC|*|DEF {GHI 0 2 0} {{Points {}}}}" $array[2] = "{ABC|*|XYZ:abc:def {GHI 0 22 0} {{Points {{F1 1.1} {F2 1.2} {F3 1.3} {F4 1.4}}}}}" .. .. $array[5] = "{ ABC|*|XYZ:abc:pqr {GHI 0 68 0} {{Points {{F1 11.11} {F2 12.10} {F3 14.11} {F4 16.23}}}} }" Which means, I need to match the first opening curly brace with its closing curly brace and extract the string in between. I have checked the below link, but this doesnt apply to my question. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/413071/regex-to-get-string-between-curly-braces-i-want-whats-between-the-curly-braces I am trying but would really help if someone can assist me with their expertise ...
