  • MySQL - What is the correct primary key method

    I'm starting to develop an application using MySQL and although I've developed apps before using databases, I've normally gone to the incrementing id method. The other day I was reading a posting somewhere and saw someone being picked apart for this, for not properly "normalising the database". I'm not a big database person, but I wanted to make sure I'm doing this right. Any ideas, help / guidance?

  • Very slow write performance on Debian 6.0 (AMD64) with DMCRYPT/LVM/RAID1

    I'm seeing very strange performance characteristics on one of my servers. This server is running a simple two-disk software-RAID1 setup with LVM spanning /dev/md0. One of the logical volumes /dev/vg0/secure is encrypted using dmcrypt with LUKS and mounted with the sync and noatimes flag. Writing to that volume is incredibly slow at 1.8 MB/s and the CPU usage stays near 0%. There are 8 crpyto/1-8 processes running (it's a Intel Quadcore CPU). I hope that someone on serverfault has seen this before :-(. uname -a 2.6.32-5-xen-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 8 00:01:30 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux Interestingly, when I read from the device I get good performance numbers: reading without encryption: $ dd if=/dev/vg0/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 68.8951 s, 95.1 MB/s reading with encryption: $ dd if=/dev/mapper/secure of=/dev/null bs=64k count=100000 100000+0 records in 100000+0 records out 6553600000 bytes (6.6 GB) copied, 69.7116 s, 94.0 MB/s However, when I try to write to the device: $ dd if=/dev/zero of=./test bs=64k 8809+0 records in 8809+0 records out 577306624 bytes (577 MB) copied, 321.861 s, 1.8 MB/s Also, when I read I see CPU usage, when I write, the CPU stays at almost 0% usage.   • Performance Overhead of Encrypted /home

    I have a netbook with Windows on the second partition and Xubuntu (/ and /home) on the third partition. I selected to encrypt my home folder during installation. The performance of the netbook is adequate for the small machine that it is, but I'm looking to improve performance. I could not find much information about the overhead (CPU or drive) associated with home partition encryption. I ran the following, writing to my home partition as well as the the mounted Windows partition: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/dummy bs=512 count=10240 dd if=/dev/zero of=/media/Windows/dummy bs=512 count=10240 The first returned 2.4MB/s and the second returned 2.5MB/s. Can I therefore deduce that there is very little overhead to home folder encryption? I'm not sure if the different filesystems will make any difference (/ and /home are ext3). Update 1 I don't know why I didn't use /tmp instead of the mounted Windows folder. Only /home is encrypted, so /tmp is unencrypted ext3. The results of the dd as above are astounding: ~: 2.4 MB/s /tmp: 42.6 MB/s Comments please? The reason I am asking this is that disk access on the netbook is noticeably slow.   • Cannot login in account with encrypted home after update from 11.04 to 11.10

    After upgrading from ubuntu 11.04 to 10.10 I cannot access my encrypted home partition anymore. I can login, however all data stays encrypted. ecryptfs-mount-private gives: ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly Any idea how to fix this?   • How do I rescue files from the encrypted home folder via live USB stick?

    I know, this has been asked and answered all over the internet already. However, I start feeling stupid, since the informations there are not helping me. Just this morning, I wanted to install the newest update to 13.10. After the download, when it came to the actual installing, the install program froze and didn't do anything for hours. At that time, I was still logged in. The computer was working and everything was accessable to me. However, I made the mistake and didn't immediately make safety copies of everything. Instead, I just rebooted. Long story short: My computer even fails to reset to a previous version via Grub. But I am able to boot from a USB stick and, after starting Nautilus, I see my home folder on the HD. I would now like to copy its contents onto an external harddisk. Problem 1: I have no rights to access the folder like that. Problem 2: It is encrypted. Problem 3: I don't know how to give myself the rights to access the folder nor do I know how to encrypt it. I assume that it might help that I still know these things: - my old login name - my old login phrase - a 32 characters long string of hexadecimal numbers that I copied to my list of passwords as "Ubuntu Encryption Code". I copied it digitally right after installing Ubuntu the first time and encrypting the home folder, so there won't be any typos. I am sure of that. The solutions that I saw so far, tell me that I need the "encryption phrase". But when I follow the instructions and use this phrase that I have in my list, I only get messages of denial. Can anyone help me through this special problem, please?

  • How to modify partitions after install?

    I wanted to have Ubuntu with full disk encryption on one big partition, and Windows on a small one. In 12.04, only the Server Edition installer has full disk encryption, so I used that and then installed ubuntu-desktop. When it asked for the size, I reduced it from ~999GB to ~750gb. Now after the install, on both gparted and disk utility I see /dev/sda2 taking ~931GB, and nothing unallocated, so I can't create a partition for windows. I got the size right, because when I right-click inside a folder, then hit 'properties', I see Free space: ~690GB (I don't know why it's not ~750GB, but at least it's not 900). The command df -h shows the same. So what can I do? Normally I would just resize a partition with gparted to create unallocated space, then create the partition. But here I have two problems: gparted does not seem to be showing the correct values, and also it says it does not support LUKS so I'm afraid it will mess things up. Any thoughts?

records... i am not able to find any solution /control using which i an do it easily. coz my field's value is in attribute named "Value" when in the examples i saw its between opening and closing tag.. i have 2 methods to do so. 1 . i make one page to edit a single record and pass id of record to that page on editing. open the page in iframe on same page to edit and in page_load get data from database for id passed and fill it in control. 2 . i store xml on server as physical file and use it in page i opened in iframe to edit the record. so i am confused... can anybody please guide me that what shpould i do to let user provide interface to edit this xml data/user profile ?

I have done a bit of research and found several classes developed for a similar purpose, but haven't been able to turn up much that is built into the Windows libraries. I just want them to be able to put files in there but not see the content of the folder and prohibit them from deleting any files in there. Does anybody have a clue what could be the problem and how I can fix it ?

  • How do I use an SSH public key from a remote machine?

    Setup The public keys are set up on a Macbook. I can do a passwordless push to github and a server (iMac) on the local network. The Problem I know the keys are partially setup correctly, because I everything works if I'm sitting at the Macbook. What doesn't work is when I SSH into the Macbook remotely and attempt to push to github or to the iMac server. I'm prompted to input my SSH key passphrase. What am I missing to enable pushing to github from the Macbook while logged in remotely from the iMac?

  • Get CruiseControl to talk to github with the correct public key.

    Hi All, Has anybody installed git and ControlControl and got CruiseControl to pull from GitHub on a window 2003 server. I keep getting public key errors (access denied) - Which is good i suppose as that confirms git is talking to github. However what is not good is that I dont not know where to install the rsa keys so they will be picked up by the running process (git in the context of cc.net). Any help would save me a lot of hair! I have tried installing the keys into; c:\Program Files\Git.ssh Whereby running git bash and cd ~ take me to: c:\Program Files\Git Thanks in advance

  • keybinding issues with xmodmap across synergy

    I've got two systems I use across Synergy. On the main one I have a normal keyboard that I swap caps lock and ctrl for. So I do: xmodmap -e 'keycode 66 = Control_L' xmodmap -e 'clear lock' xmodmap -e 'add Control = Control_L' Where keycode 66 is my caps lock key. The trouble is that I can't get this key to act as a control key on the other machine I connect to with synergy. The strange thing is that if I plug a keyboard into the machine, and run xev, the control key there is keycode 37. When I then hit my modified control key (keycode 66 on the master) it's registering as keycode 37 on the remote machine. So according to xev, it should be picking it up as a control keypress. Anyone have any hints on if Synergy is doing something overly helpful for me?

  • PGP Desktop Whole disk Encryption paused on a toshiba ultrabook z935

    I have a Toshiba z930 Ultrabook with PGP Desktop installed for whole disk encryption. It installed correctly, and started encrypting but it stays paused. If I reboot, it shows me the PGP desktop username, password, domain screen. If I enter in my credentials, it allows me to get into windows but encryption remains paused. If I click on resume, it lets me enter a password, accepts it but then it doesn't do anything. One suspicious thing is that in the 'Select disk or partition to encrypt' box, it says, C: 120B fixed disk. Unknown Bus: TOSHIBA THNSNS12... Do I need to change something in the BIOS, or install any drivers so that it doesn't see it as an Unknown Bus?

    Hi, I'm using Belarc Advisor to examine my PC. Part of BA is a security benchmark summary, which examines components of windows security and provides a benchmark rating. Two items are marked as Fail: - Store Passwords using Reversible Encryption - Password History Size I have opened the Local Security Settings tool from the Control Panel Administrative Tools, and ensured that the "Store passwords using reversible encryption" setting is enabled. Also, I've set the password history to a number. So I'm a bit miffed about the Fail marks. Any idea why the Fail marks appear? Any clues how I can Pass them? Thanks, Steve.

  • Can Google App users view Exchange users public calendars and contacts?

    My company currently uses MS Exchange 2003 for company email, contacts, and calendars. We have approximately 150 users. Construction industry. I would like to look into migrating from Exchange to Google Apps. It will be an easier sell to the powers that be if we can migrate certain smaller departments first successfully than an entire company move. I would like to first migrate our field superintendents who are usually out of the office working remotely. Approx 30 users. Will Google App users be able to see our Exchange user's calendars and vice versa? How about public folders? Anyone's migration story is much appreciated. Thank you.

  • phpBB - display a public message when the whole board is private

    In my installation all discussion forums/boards are private and can only be seen after a user registers and admin approves their membership. This is working. When a user first comes to the main phpBB page and they're not logged in, they can see very little except for the login and registration functions. Now I'm trying to configure phpBB to display a Read Me posting that is available to general public before registration or login. The problem is that I'd have to create a whole "public" forum and it would likely contain only one topic thread called "Read Me". The users would have to click into the public forum and then click again to get into the Topic called "Read Me". Is it possible to have a Topic thread outside of a forum? If not, is there another, better, way to achieve this? I just want to display a message, maybe a few short paragraphs to the public, explaining the purpose of the Forum and that they must register and wait for approval in order to gain additional access. I'm not seeing anything like this in the ACP. Thank-you.

  • OAuth2 vs Public API

    My understanding of OAuth (2.0) is that its a software stack and protocol to allow 2+ web apps to share information about a single end user. User A is a member of Site B and Site C; Site B wants to fetch some data from Site C about User A, and this is where OAuth steps in. So first off, if this assessment is incorrect, please begin by clarifying this for me and correcting me! Assuming I'm on the right track, then I guess I'm not seeing the need for OAuth to begin with (!). I'm sure I'm just not seeing the "forest through the trees" here, but the way I see it, couldn't Site C just expose a public API that Site B could use to fetch the same data (sans OAuth)? If Site C required user credentials to access the data, could this public API just use HTTPS for secure transport and require username/password as a part of each API call? Again, I'm sure I'm missing something, but I'm just not understanding why I would need OAuth when a secure, public API written and exposed by Site C seems more than capable of delivering what Site B needs regarding User A. In general, I'm looking for a set of guidelines to go by when deciding to choose between using OAuth for my web apps or just writing my own web service ( exposing public API). Thanks in advance!
