• Ubuntu Newbie Needs Assistance!!

  New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!! • SYS-5016T-MTFB will not POST without manual assistance (Motherboard: X8STi-F)

  I have a Supermicro 5016T-MTFB 1U server which I am in the process of setting up, but it has a really strange problem. When the system is powered on it will not POST until I press the reset button a few times, followed by pressing the delete key on the keyboard to "wake it up". If I power it on and do nothing, the fans spin up but nothing else happens at all. After pressing the reset button once, the red "overheat" light comes on and blinks which is supposed to indicate a fan failure - but all the fans are working. Pressing reset again usually stops the blinking, and the system starts the normal POST routine but it will not actually get to the bios screen unless I press delete. If I don't press delete, it just continues to hang. After pressing delete it will take me into the bios setup screen, if I exit without saving changes I can boot the system normally. I was able to successfully install Linux with no trouble...but upon rebooting the same problem happened again. This board has integrated IPMI which I thought was the problem, so I disabled it via the jumper on the board. Did not help. Each time this system powers on, it goes on for a second, then turns off again for another second, then turns back on again. I don't know why it does that. Here is what I put in the system: 1 x Xeon E5630 (Nehalem) 80W TDP (it's not overheating, CPU temps stay under 40 degrees C) 2 x Kingston 2GB x 3 DDR3-1066 Memory ECC, unbuffered, unregistered (kvr1066d3e7sk3/6g) 1 x Intel X25-M 160 GB 2 x Western Digital RE3 1TB

• Need assistance making a batch file for renaming files in separate folders

  Ok, here's one for you. I'm trying to use a batch file to rename a bunch of files, but none of them are in the same folder as the batch file itself. The command prompt keeps telling me that the directory can't be found. I suppose I could just rename all the files in all the folders that match the filename, but I don't want to do that either; I only want to change certain ones. • Need assistance setting up Linux Router with 2 public lans

  I was assigned a.b.c.10/30 (Public IP) for my router and given a.b.c.9 as the gateway. I was also assigned x.y.z.128/25 (Public IP block) for my use. I want to setup a Linux router to handle this situation. My Linux box has 3 NICs, eth0 is a.b.c.10, eth1 I have assigned x.y.z.254, eth2 is unused at present. I have eth1 connected to a network switch, and several devices connected. Let's say box A is x.y.z.129 with a gateway of x.y.z.254. I have not connected to the network yet, as it is not live. What settings do I need to make, beyond adding the 2 network definitions to the cards and having "route add default gw a.b.c.9 eth0"? I may add a private 192.168.100.0/24 lan to eth2 later.

• IP KVM switch, or serial console box for remote admin?

  We have a small server farm (11 now, may add more in the future) of HP Proliant DL160 G6s. They all run either Linux (server only, no X11) or VMware ESX. We had intended to get models with iLO, in case BIOS-level remote admin became an issue, but that didn't happen. I had an IP KVM switch recommended to me (along with some sort of Remote Reboot hardware.) I've since realized that none of our machines need GUI administration, so perhaps a serial console switch would be a cheaper and more appropriate option. Something like this: http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/serimux-cs-32.html Do you folks have an opinions on which way is a better choice? Should we go for the ease of setup (plug and go, instead of turning on the feature in the BIOS and making sure the serial settings are correct) and the flexibility of an IP KVM switch even with the extra cost? • Microsoft Word 2010 Header and Footer assistance

  I am using Microsoft Word 2010 to format a book. I need different headers for different parts of the book. I have put them in different sections but my problem is when I click on Header to change or delete certain headers it changes the pages around in my document. For instance when I am looking at the page regularly the writing and section for page 20 is different then the writing and section when I am looking at it with the header and footer open. This is very frustrating because I can not properly change the headers. I hope this makes sense and somebody can explain what is going on and how to resolve this!

  Has anyone had experience using VMs as remote desktops for public access terminals (e.g. an internet cafe) In our case we don't want to charge money for access but I figure this solution has a few advantages, such as: can easily re-build VMs daily, erasing private data and clutter can use rickety old PCs for the 'dumb' terminals less IT support needed on site Can you suggest tools to help do this? Keeping the terminals up and running as much of the time as possible is the main priority, so they need to boot straight into full screen remote desktop and stay there.

• How to troubleshoot a remote wmi query/access failure?

  I'm using Powershell to query a remote computer in a domain for a wmi object, eg: "gwmi -computer test -class win32_bios". I get this error message: Value does not fall within the expected range Executing the query local under the same user works fine. It seems to happen on both windows 2003 and also 2008 systems. The user that runs the shell has admin rights on the local and remote server. I checked wmi and dcom permissions as far as I know how to do this, they seem to be the same on a server where it works, and another where it does not. I think it is not a network issue, all ports are open that are needed, and it also happens within the same subnet. When sniffing the traffic we see the following errors: RPC: c/o Alter Cont Resp: Call=0x2 Assoc Grp=0x4E4E Xmit=0x16D0 Recv=0x16D0 Warning: GssAPIMechanism is not found, either caused by not reassembled, conversation off or filtering. And an errormessage from Kerberos: Kerberos: KRB_ERROR - KDC_ERR_BADOPTION (13) The option code in the packet is 0x40830000 Any idea what I should look into?

• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

• My ubuntu server is losing connectivity, require assistance troubleshooting

  I have two server monitoring tools that check the uptime of my Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Over the last month both of these tools have reported the following outages: Jan - 15mins: self recovery Jan - 5 mins: self recovery Feb - 15mins: I managed to be online when this happened and logged into my control panel to find that my server was shutdown. I manually restarted it only because I was online. I wonder if it would have restarted? I have contacted my VPS provider (webbynode) who could not see any any problems with their VPS infrastructure for the February outage. I have also checked the following log files to see if there are any anomalies that could be the cause of the outages; I am unable to see anything related to the server shutdown (Feb) in these logs: /var/log/auth.log /var/log/apache2/error.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/kern.log /var/log/boot /var/log/messages Could anyone suggest any other things I should look out for, such as additional system logs? I just added bootlogging through /etc/default/bootlogd

• backuppc - how to backup remote (over the internet) clients?

  I am testing out backuppc, which works great so far backing up windows clients on a LAN via SMB (no backup client/agent required). However I have quite a few laptops and desktops that are in various remote locations - some of which move around. I need some way to have that remote computer create an outgoing connection for backup purposes (Windows XP/7). I know backuppc supports smb, rsync and 'tar', but I believe these are all connections going from the server TO the client. SO, I either need a way to vpn the client on a timed basis, or it would be a lot better if the client could some how connect to the server (ssh?) and initiate it's own backup somehow (rsync?). Of course this all needs to be pre-installed by me and require no maintenance by the end user, no dialogs on their side. What do you think?

  I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. • Need Assistance on ASUS K55V USB ports not working

  I have a K55V ASUS laptop, W7 Home (64bit). Whenever I try to use a mouse (or any other USB device), it doesn't work because of a driver problem. The automatic update tries to update the driver and requires me to reboot directly after. It doesn't work. Windows update then wants to re-attempt the update and then I have to reboot (etc). Now, after 10 tries it still doesn't work. Can some one help me out on this? No USB ports work at the moment, it has 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port.

  I'm running into a few issues with our new database server. It is a HP G8 with 2 INTEL XEON E5-2650 processors and 32GB of ram. This server is dedicated as a MySQL server (5.1.69) for our intranet portal. I have been having issues with this server staying alive - I notice high CPU usage during certain times of day (8% ~ 1500%+) and see very low memory usage (7 ~ 15%) based on using the 'top' command. When the CPU usage passes 1000%, that is when the app usually dies. • In need of assistance for recovering a lost partition

  The program that has worked for the most part is Active@ Partition Recovery. I'm so close but yet so far from recovering my data. Okay so here's what happens. In the following screenshot (blanked out a folder and filename with profanity in case some of you guys are at work :P), it detects the partition I accidentally deleted with ALL 100% of my data listed. Of course, I didn't write ANY data to that drive after I did this. But when I click "recover" and finishes the recovery process, in Windows I click on the partition that was just was just recovered... It's EMPTY. The program seems to be able to see my lost files, but when I recover the partition windows doesn't seem to think the same =( Things I tried: I tried running a chkdsk /r /f after I recovered the partition, apparently it couldn't find any errors. Tried using other software like TestDisk to recover the partition, but they (all) act similar to Windows in that it detects the (missing) partition but when I browse it there's no files. The partition is there along with all the file and data information. The sector information is also in the screenshot, is there any way I can use this to my advantage in recovering my data? Other information: Dualboot: Win8 / Ubuntu 12.10 x64 1TB Internal desktop drive, GPT Layout, NTFS formatted drive, 64K allocation size.

• howt setup remote access into computer behind 2 routers?

  I can setup remote access to a pc behind a single router/firewall by using NAT and Port Forwarding, simples! But there is a customer that shares an internet connection with another office, and they are behind a second router firewall. I drawed a picture with my crayons but I can't attach it because I'm a new account on SF. see it here: http://i.imgur.com/b3FDx.png So how would I setup remote access to the pc that is beind the second firewall? It must be something about static routes, i.e. if I hit the wan ip on port 4905 I want it to forward it to 10.0.0.30 by going through 192.168.1.10 so a route statement like for all requests to 10.0.0.30, use 192.168.1.10 ? and ass u me router 2 has a static gateway ip of 192.168.1.10 and need a standard NAT on router 2 to point port 4905 to 10.0.0.30 is this the right way, any tips? both routers are netgear consumer equipment. thanks

• How to copy a file to a remote server using the command line?

  I am trying to copy a file from my desktop to my remote server using the sudo command. I am doing this from the remote machine since I know the password for this machine and I do not have a password for my local machine. sudo scp donj@localhost:/Desktop/my.cnf user@remotemachine:/app/MySQL/my.cnf This does not work however. I want to overwrite the my.cnf file in the MySQL directory. I tried the su command but I do not have the password to become a super user.

  I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6 and I have X11 installed. I also have ubuntu 10.04 LTS running on a remote machine. I have root privileges. So far I haven't really installed anything besides the operating system. This was done in an amazon aws type of way. I see people talking about getting gnome or a "remote desktop" type of thing working, but I'm not sure how to go about this. I connected and then typed in gnome-session but nothing happened. Maybe I don't have that thing installed yet? Can someone point me in the right direction? Also, is it possible to just start an X11 session with a single app, like notepad or a file and folder browser?

  Hello, i am working with Social Networking iphone app which require remote data connection. So i hired a php developer in order to provide me RESTful services. But when i start working with him, he arguing me that he will not make stored procedures and web services. Instead of he suggested me to pass query as a parameter. Suppose If I have to call Search service, he told me to send POST request with 3 parameters: Query="select * from users", username=abd and password = 123 And i thing there is no such architecture in order to use remote data. Then he is saying it is possible through socket programming. And I am 100% sure this is not an appropriate way to access remote data. This is simply illogical. Thousands of iphone application using REST/SOAP services to make remote data connection He just declined me to provide RESTful services. Please its my heartily advice to all developers that post your own views over here. So that I can show to that developers that these are the views from all developers worldwide.

  Sorry if this question is a duplicate, I did some extensive searching and found nothing on quite the same topic (though a couple on partially-overlapping topics). Recently, whilst on holiday in Munich, Germany, I was taken aback by the sheer number of programming-related posts available in the city that I easily qualify for (both in terms of knowledge, and experience). The advertised working environments seemed good and the pay seemed to be at least as good as what I'd expect here in the UK. Probably 80% of the advertisements I saw on the underground were for IT-related jobs, and a good 60% of those I was easily qualified for. At the moment, I work as a freelancer mostly on web and small software projects, but seeing the vast availability of jobs in Munich versus my local area has me thinking about remote working. I'm unable to relocate for a job for the next 3 years (my wife has a contract to continue being a doctor at her current hospital for that time) but would almost certainly be open to it after that (after all, my wife and I both love Munich). In the meanwhile, I would be very interested in remote-working. So, my question is thus do companies ever take on remote workers (even with semi-frequent trips to the office) from abroad, with a view to later relocation? And, if so, how do you go about broaching the topic with a recruiter when getting in contact about a job posting? Language isn't a barrier for me, here, as 90% of the jobs I've looked up in Munich don't require German speakers (seems they have a big recruiting market abroad). I'm also under no illusions about the disadvantages of remote working, but I'm more interested in the viability of the scenario rather than the intricacies (at least at this point). I'd really appreciate any contributions, especially from those who have experience with working in such a scenario!

• How to better copy&paste big files over RDP?

  Recently I was making a few attempts to copy&paste a big (1.2 GB) file to remote computer over RDP. The remote computer is virtual testing machine with MS Windows Server 2008 Datacenter. First I tried to copy&paste before midnight when the transfer speed was limited by client computer ISP to 100 kB/s. So, it required a few hours and I was forced to cancel transfer since remote desktop became too unresponsive and sluggish (slow). So, I re-started it over midnight when my local transfer speed is over 4 GB/s 4MB/s (sorry for typo). So, my impression is that independently on speed (broadband) of copy&paste transfer the remote computer becomes sluggish while copying over RDP. At the same time downloading from internet doesn't make remote host sluggish. AFAIU, it is because clipboard of remote computer and so its memory becomes overloaded by transfer. How can I control (restrict) the usage of clipboard for specific process (pasting of file)? What are the possible way to control it? Update: After reading that slow speed of transfer is caused by encryption used for copy&pasting over RDP and since I believe I am more interested in overall efficiency: both the time, or rapidness, of getting file as well as possibility to work without waiting, I changed the question title from: How to control the usage of remote desktop clipboard usage for pasting a big file? to How to better copy&paste big files over RDP? For example, is it better to copy&paste one huge (zip) archive or unzip it and copy paste a folder with unzipped files? And more exactly I wanted to ask: What are possible ways to improve overall experience: the speed of transfer (i.e. availability of needed file) responsiveness of remote host (making remote coputer available for work before completion of copy&pasting)?
