• Approaches for Error Code/Message Management in .NET

  Looking for suggestions/best practices on managing error codes and messages in a multi-tiered applications. Specifically things like: Where should error codes be defined? Enum? Class? How are error messages or further details associated with the error codes? resource files? attributes on enum values, etc.? If you have a multi-tier application consisting of DAL, BLL, UI, and Common projects for example, should there be a single giant list of codes for all tiers, or are the codes extensible by project/tier? Update: Important to mention that I can't rely solely on Exceptions and custom Exception types for error reporting, as some clients for this application will be via web services (SOAP & REST) Any suggestions welcome!

• Android: stack management for views in a tab?

  I see some answers here prefer views over activities as contents of tabs. Correct me if I am wrong. My understanding is that by switching out views, it's possible to keep the navigation flow inside a tab (more user friendly, I think). But I wonder how to manage the view stack then in case of the back button events. Also this could cause one giant Activity with large amount of views, which might not be good. So I wish to know why exactly views as contents is preferred before I change my current application to this. Thanks,

• Basic Client-Server Design for persistent connections?

  Here's as far as I understand it: Client & Server make connection Client sends server data Server interprets data, sends client data So on, and so forth, until client sends disconnect signal. I'm just wondering about implementation. Step 2 and 3 are confusing to me, maybe I'm over-complicating it. Is there anymore to interpreting the data than a giant switch statement? Any good books on client/server design? Specifically talking about multithreaded servers, scalability, and message design (byte 1 = header info, byte 2 = blah blah, etc)? Specifically geared towards C++.

• Help with setting up panels in Java

  I'm new to Java awt, so I am having trouble with setting up panels. I have one giant panel, which needs to hold 3 panels inside (photo is attached at the bottom). One will go on top(1), second one will be in the middle(3), and third goes on the bottom(2). Any remaining space has to be divided equally between (1)/(3) and (3)/(2). Also, the middle panel (3) is a table, so GridLayout has to be used. How can I achieve this? Thanks in advance! P.S. I've tried to draw it in MS Paint (http://i45.tinypic.com/2w523ie.jpg)

  Here is the drill, I want to version a database. I have done this before using multiple rows where the table primary key becomes a combination of the row id and either a datestamp or a version #. Now I want to version a table that depends on many other small tables. Versioning each table will be a giant PITA, so I am looking for good options to verion a schema where the data to be versioned spreads over multiple tables. All related tables are properly keyed with foreign key relationships. The database is currently on Sql Server 2005.

• Fastest Way to generate 1,000,000+ random numbers in python

  I am currently writing an app in python that needs to generate large amount of random numbers, FAST. Currently I have a scheme going that uses numpy to generate all of the numbers in a giant batch (about ~500,000 at a time). While this seems to be faster than python's implementation. I still need it to go faster. Any ideas? I'm open to writing it in C and embedding it in the program or doing w/e it takes. Constraints on the random numbers: A Set of numbers 7 numbers that can all have different bounds: eg: [0-X1, 0-X2, 0-X3, 0-X4, 0-X5, 0-X6, 0-X7] Currently I am generating a list of 7 numbers with random values from [0-1) then multiplying by [X1..X7] A Set of 13 numbers that all add up to 1 Currently just generating 13 numbers then dividing by their sum Any ideas? Would pre calculating these numbers and storing them in a file make this faster? Thanks!

• Use desktop widget to run corporate web application

  So the question is simple: is it possible to set windows desktop to corporate application page (anybody remembers that active desktop thing?) and use it instead of browser (sic!). My thoughts: Windows 7: I can create giant full-screen widget that will show my page. Still have no idea if I will be able to navigate inside it though. Windows Vista: ???. I know there is still a side bar gadget that hosts a browser. Windows XP: create static html page with iframe pointing to corporate app home page. Problem: clicking links on page still opens default browser.

I've recently started learning web programming. I really like SVG + CSS, and was wondering -- why do people not design entire webpages in SVG? Context SVG provides beautiful primitive: quadratic + cubic bezier curves; lines + filling -- all as vector graphics SVG provides text SVG provides affine transformations Questions Are there examples of people designing entire websites as a giant SVG file? If not, what the limitations? Are there performance hits when using SVG primitives as opposed to divs/tables?

• Possible to convert list of #defines into strings (C++)

  Suppose I have a list of #defines in a header file for an external library. These #defines represent error codes returned from functions. I want to write a conversion function that can take as an input an error code and return as an output a string literal representing the actual #define name. As an example, if I have #define NO_ERROR 0 #define ONE_KIND_OF_ERROR 1 #define ANOTHER_KIND_OF_ERROR 2 I would like a function to be able to called like int errorCode = doSomeLibraryFunction(); if (errorCode) writeToLog(convertToString(errorCode)); And have convertToString() be able to auto-convert that error code without being a giant switch-case looking like const char* convertToString(int errorCode) { switch (errorCode) { case NO_ERROR: return "NO_ERROR"; case ONE_KIND_OF_ERROR: return "ONE_KIND_OF_ERROR"; ... ... ...   In web dev I come across these problems a lot. For example, we have a giant list of URLs that are in this format: /businesses /businesses/food /businesses/food/wendys /businesses/food/wendys/chili /businesses/food/wendys/fries /businesses/food/wendys/chicken-nuggets /businesses/pharmacy/cvs /businesses/pharmacy/cvs/toothpaste /businesses/pharmacy/cvs/toothpaste/brand ... and then we need to output each one, where the parent category is in h1 tags, the child is in h2 tags, and the children of that are in h3 tags. I can handle this but I feel my code is messy. I'm sure there is a design pattern I can use? Langs are ruby/php usually. how would you handle this?

• Use LINQ to insert data from dataset to SQL

  Let's say I have a dataset in an ASP.NET website (.NET 3.5) with 5 tables, each has roughly 30,000 rows and an average of 12 columns. I want to insert all of the data from the dataset into 5 very-similar-but-not-quite-identical tables in SQL Server 2008. I also want to use LINQ (personal preference - trying to learn something new). Is it as simple as iterating through the dataset and, for each row, creating a new instance of the associated class, initializing its data with the dataset's row, adding it to the data model, and then doing one giant SubmitChanges at the end? Are there better ways of doing this with LINQ? Or is this the de-facto standard?

• Performance considerations of a large hard-coded array in the .cs file

  I'm writing some code where performance is important. In one part of it, I have to compare a large set of pre-computed data against dynamic values. Currently, I'm storing that pre-computed data in a giant array in the .cs file: Data[] data = { /* my data set */ }; The data set is about 90kb, or roughly 13k elements. I was wondering if there's any downside to doing this, as opposed to loading it in from an external file? I'm not entirely sure how C# works internally, so I just wanted to be aware of any performance issues I might encounter with this method.

• Autocad 2014 - Positioning electrical objects for plans (icons and symbols, not actual objects)

  I am using Autocad to design my home. I am at a phase where I want to set the location for the switches, lighting fixtures, power sockets, communication sockets etc. I am thinking of something like this http://www.the-house-plans-guide.com/electrical-blueprint-symbols.html. I am not interested in placing specific lighting fixtures or rendering them, just putting the symbol and distances for the symbol. I can use Autocad Electrical, but that's a GIANT overshoot.   I have hourly logs like user1:joined user2:log out user1:added pic user1:added comment user3:joined I want to compress all the flat files down to one file. There are around 30 million users in the logs and I just want the latest user log for all the logs. My end result is I want to have a log look like user1:added comment user2:log out user3:joined Now my first attempt on a small scale was to just do a dict like log['user1'] = "added comment" Will doing a dict of 30 million key/val pairs have a giant memory footprint.. Or should I use something like sqllite to store them.. then just put the contents of the sqllite table back into a file?

• Excel isn't reading sql exported csv properly

  I have a batch file that calls sqlcmd to run a command and then export the data as a csv. When viewed in a cell the trasancted date for example shows 35:30.0 but if you click on it the formula bar shows 1/1/1900 2:45:00 PM. I need the full timestamp to show in the cell. Any ideas? The batch file is the following sqlcmd -S server -U username -P password -d database -i "D:\path\sqlScript.sql" -s "," > D:\path\report.csv -I -W -k 1 The script is the following. Now I currently have them cast as varchars, but that's simply because i've tried to change it a bit. Varchar doesn't work either. • MKPinAnnotationView - hard to drag

  I have a MKPinAnnotationView that the user can drag around the map. It is very difficult for a user to drag the pin. I've tried increasing the frame size and also using a giant custom image. But nothing seems to actually change the hit area for the drag to be larger than default. Consequently, I have to attempt to tap/drag about ten times before anything happens. • Why isn't INT more efficient than UNIQUEIDENTIFIER (according to the execution plan)?

  I have a parent table and child table where the columns that join them together are the UNIQUEIDENTIFIER type. The child table has a clustered index on the column that joins it to the parent table (its PK, which is also clustered). I have created a copy of both of these tables but changed the relationship columns to be INTs instead, have rebuilt the indexes so that they are essentially the same structure and can be queried in the same way. When I query for a known 20 records from the parent table, pulling in all the related records from the child tables, I get identical query costs across both, i.e. 50/50 cost for the batches. If this is true, then my giant project to change all of the tables like this appears to be pointless, other than speeding up inserts. Can anyone provide any light on the situation? EDIT: The question is not about which is more efficient, but why is the query execution plan showing both queries as having the same cost?

• TFS 2010 : Unable to add Project to a collection

  This morning I'm trying to setup Team Foundation Server 2010 to demo for my team. As this is just a demo, I thought I would install it on my Windows 7 machine which also serves as my development machine. My development machine uses Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite. I installed Team Explorer 2008 and then reapplied SP1. Finally I installed and setup TFS 2010. TFS by default gave me administrator privileges. I started up Visual Studios, and connected up to the Collection just fine. However, I'm unable to create a new project and get the follow error message: "TF30172: You are trying to create a team project either without required permissions or with an older version of team Explorer. Contact your project admin..." To check to permissions, I used my home computer which is running Visual Studio 2010. On this machine I was able to connect up to the same TFS instance and create a project no problem. So it looks as though it is a team explorer problem, but everywhere on the web people are saying not only am what I'm trying to do possible, but they have done it themselves. What am I missing to add a project to TFS 2010 under Visual Studio 2008?

• 403 Forbidden when Deploying asp.net 4.0 site to IIS 7

  So I have an EC2 instance running, the URL NoWeatherSurprises.com I have the DNS pointing there, and I set up a new site in IIS 7 and pointed it to a folder. I used Visual Studios Web Developer 2010 express to publish to this folder. It now has the binaries and such. However if I go to NoWeatherSurprises.com I get the welcome to IIS 7 screen. I'd expect to go to my application If I navigate to http://noweathersurprises.com/weather/ [weather was the folder I published to under wwwroot] I get a 403 forbidden. I have no idea why, I am guessing that it is trying to do a directory listing or something instead of launching my MVC Application. So 2 problems in summary. It is not pointing the domain to the folder directly and I need to add /weather I am getting a 403 forbidden instead of the results of my home controller with the index action. I am new to IIS 7, I had been using IIS 6 and had a lot less trouble setting it up, but I suspect that's my own fault and i am just missing something. Thanks in advance for any help

However, I want to upgrade this to 4 monitors. My question is, what is the best way to do this? I remember in the past reading I need the same type of video card, however would any GeForce GTX work, or do i need that very specific model (EVGA 01G-P3-1366-TR GeForce GTX 460 SE)? Are there any issues I should be aware of before I order 2 new monitors and a video card? Are there video cards better setup for this? I know NVidia offers SLI, however I do not know if my mobo is compliant. My mobo also offers CrossFireX configuration, though from what it says only Radeon are compliant. Any suggestions / feedbacks on my best route with my current setup is appreciated. Even if you suggest buying 2 new identical video cards, as long as you can mention which and why that is better I really appreciate it. Note: I really do not do any gaming. I sometimes do some 3D work in Unity and very rarely in Maya. Besides that I mostly do all my computer work in Visual Studios and Photoshop. I however need the 2 extra monitors because I monitor sometimes 5 remote desktops at once and switching on only 2 is becoming a very big pain. Also seeing 3 side by side while I work on the 4th will be very helpful. Again, I appreciate any feedback, as I have googled a bunch and just want to make sure what I buy will work.

• How do i play nicely with MS SQL/SQL Server 2008

  Big problem. I have nearly given up. I am trying to port my prototype to use MS SQL so it will work on a server once i get it (the server will be SQL Server 2008, shared, i dont know any more info). So i tried to connect to SQL Server via visual studios IDE and had no luck. I enabled TCP and named pipes and restarted the service (and computer) with still no luck. I remembered about mdf files so i made that after an obstacle of not being able to make the connect string require i figure out visual studio has it in its properties and successfully connected with that. Then i had a problem with nested transactions. After not being able to figure out how to check i wondered if i can configure it to allow it somehow. I always thought all of MS were the same except for limitations but sql server seems to support nested transactions so theres no point trying to work around the problem with .mdf files since i wont need them and really just used it to port the base of my sql code and to check if syntax is correct. I tried installing SQL Server Management Studio since people mentioned it several times (as a solution or at least help). When installing it on windows 7 it says it may not be compatible. After running it, it launched SQL Server Installation Center (64-bit) which doesnt seem to be the same thing as i dont see a way to modify any of my server (networking) configurations or edit user permissions, etc. I am clueless what to do next. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm posting here bc i think my problem is more configurations and sql server then programming.

• Audio server with best API?

  I'm a web dev, working in a small studio with a couple of other devs and some crayon-munchers (or, "designers"). Like all the best and trendiest creative studios, we have tunes. Our tunes consists of a set of speakers that whoever wants to can plug into their machine, and DJ their little socks off via iTunes, Spotify, VLC or whatever their music player of choice happens to be. Obviously, this lacks finesse. What we WANT is this: a single, dedicated machine running some sort of audio player (ideally Win-based, but a Linux flavour isn't impossible), that exposes an API. We (ie: me and the other devs) want to write a web-based client onto it, that'll let us remotely do all sorts of funky stuff like generating on-the-fly genre-based playlists, and voting for tracks, and making tea. My question - and please forgive me if this isn't the place for such a question, I was going to ask on Stackoverflow but that didn't seem right either - is this: what's the best player to start with? What can do all of this? I know VLC can function as a streaming server, but know nothing of any API it may have. I'd rather chop my pinky off than use iTunes, but if it does what we want, then...
