  • Batch Image compression tool for optimizing thousands of images

    Hi all, I'm maintaining a site that has thousands of images that have not been compressed nearly enough. The homepage weighs in at 1.5 Mb currently, and it could easily be way less that half that. I'm looking for some kind of tool that'll take a folder full of JPG pictures and will recompress them to their "optimal" compression value. Obviously, "optimal lossy compression setting" is an oxymoron, but I'm thinking maybe a tool that'll try different levels and compare the outputs to the input, and choose a "sweet spot" between size and destruction? Or even try whether PNG is a better option, many times it is, for "drawing" type stuff. Does anyone of you know any such tool? I'd have lots of fun coding one, but I bet someone already did and will save me 2 days. Alternatively, of course, anything that'll take all pictures in a folder and recompress them with a fixed quality level (say, 40) will also work, it'll just not make my inner nerd as happy, but it'll solve my problem just fine. (Ideally something that can run on Windows, ideally from the command line) Thank you!

  • Maintenance tool for Application Database

    Hello ! Does anybody know about a good tool which help maintaining the database of an application ? I'm working on an application which uses a database (Microsoft Sql Server). When a development requires to change something in the database (e.g., structure, data migration...), we create a script (Transact-SQL script) and add it into our revision control tool (subversion - that tool also contains our code). Each script must add a line in a log table to keep a trace of all the scripts that have been ran into a database. In order to build a database for our application, one needs to run all scripts ordered by their creation date. I'm not really happy with this technique notably because it make application migration a bit hard. If we want to install a new version of the application somewhere, e.g., migrate from version 1.3 to 2.1, we must get all the scripts between these two versions. Then run them and ensure that everything is done in a transaction... For sure we could built home-made tools to help but I wonder if some tools already exists to do that kind of job.

  • Are there any free Xml Diff/Merge tools available?

    I have several config files in my .net applications which I would like to merge application settings elements etc. I was about to begin doing it manually as I usually do, however thought there must be an XML diff GUI tool available somewhere. The tool would be able to go to the element level to compare and display the differences etc. However Google gave no substantive free tool results and no hints for anything of value. Is such a tool available? That is very useful? For free? Thanks in advance. :) Edit: Here is a bit of clarification of the functionality that would turn my error-prone, tedious manual job into a 1-minute simpler task (and potential to automate): In KDiff3, you can do a diff/merge of entire directories. There is a hierarchical diff which is very accurate, user-friendly and clear. I was interested in finding a similar solution, however instead of directory hierarchy, an XML element hierarchy. If there is no such open source software, I am considering creating one on CodePlex to provide this functionality.

  • Host a IWpfTextView in a custom tool for a Visual Studio Extension

    I'm trying to create a IWpfTextView and then put it into a custom tool window. I can create the view, read a file to populate the ITextBuffer and display the view into my tool. I cannot edit the code at all and the code is not syntax highlighted. What steps am I missing to make this a full fledged editor?   • Integrating POP3 client functionality into a C# application?

    I have a web application that requires a server based component to periodically access POP3 email boxes and retrieve emails. The service then needs to process the emails which will involve: Validating the email against some business rules (does it contain a valid reference in the subject line, which user sent the mail, etc.) Analysing and saving any attachments to disk Take the email body and attachment details and create a new item in the database Or update an existing item where the reference matches the incoming email subject line What is the best way to approach this? I really don't want to have to write a POP3 client from scratch, but I need to be able to customize the processing of emails. Ideally I would be able to plug in some component that does the access and retrieval for me, returning arrays of attachments, body text, subject line, etc. ready for my processing... [ UPDATE: Reviews ] OK, so I have spent a fair amount of time looking into (mainly free) .NET POP3 libraries so I thought I'd provide a short review of some of those mentioned below and a few others: Pop3.net - free - works OK, very basic in terms of functionality provided. This is pretty much just the POP3 commands and some base64 encoding, but it's very straight forward - probably a good introduction Pop3 Wizard - commercial / some open source code - couldn't get this to build, missing DLLs, I wouldn't bother with this C#Mail - free - works well, comes with Mime parser and SMTP client, however the comments are in Japanese (not a big deal) and it didn't work with SSL 'out of the box' - I had to change the SslStream constructor after which it worked no problem OpenPOP - free - hasn't been updated for about 5 years so it's current state is .NET 1.0, doesn't support SSL but that was no problem to resolve - I just replaced the existing stream with an SslStream and it worked. Comes with Mime parser. Of the free libraries, I'd go for C#Mail or OpenPOP. I looked at a few commercial libraries: Chillkat, Rebex, RemObjects, JMail.net. Based on features, price and impression of the company I would probably go for Rebex and may in the future if my requirements change or I run into production issues with either of C#Mail or OpenPOP.     I'm looking for a visual regression testing tool for CSS refactoring and see whether or not there are any unintended cascading behavior in a website. Ideally, the tool that can crawl a website (even locally) and grab snapshots of each page and store it in a single repository. When run for the second time, it will show the pages that are visually different since the last time it was run. Even better: if it can show the overlapper XOR view of the 2 version of the page. compare rendering results of different browsers (almost like an automated Microsoft Expression Web compare feature).     I love reStructuredText, however the tools that support it are scattered all over the Internet. The official tool list is incomplete and/or outdated, and can be updated only via commit privileges. For some time there was a comprehensive list at the Wikipedia reStructuredText page, but this apparently "may not meet the notability guideline for web content" and is scheduled for removal. So to put it in a question form: What tool support can one expect to find when working with reStructuredText, e.g. text editors, Wiki software, converters to and from reStructuredText etc.?

  • Effective file permissions tool's api in windows

    Starting from Windows Server 2003, Windows included a new tool which calculates the effective permissions for a user (basically it resolves all groups access and takes care of all "deny" permissions as well). An example in point is that a user A belongs to groups B and C. B has been denied read permissions on a file F, while C has been allowed read and write permissions on the file and I want to calculate the effective permissions user A has on file F. This tool is available on Windows Server 2003,Vista,7 and Server 2008 by right clicking on a file and going to properties - security - advanced - effective permissions. What I need is an API in C# which does the same job. The most common FILE API returns access rules (class FileAccessRules), but there seems to be no direct way to calculate effective permissions from these set of access rules. Note: I do not want to process effective permissions in the code if at all possible, but am ready to do so as a last resort.

    Hello. I need a tool to decompile obfuscated .NET code. Yes, I know about Reflector and its plugins (FileDisassemble, FileGenerator). But they create VS project which won't compile. For an example the decompiled code contains: private sealed class d__0 : IEnumerator, IEnumerator, IDisposable { private int <1__state; private int <2__current; I need a tool which could rename automatically such name into readable (read "compilable") form.   • How to have a PHP Website tool with a version check

    Hi, So I work on a small php website tool that a few people use and what I'm looking to have added is a little version checker in it. The tool is normally hosted by others on different servers/domains/whatever have you so I'm having a bit of a trouble figuring out how I can accomplish this and do so in the best possible method. So what I'm looking to do is have a webpage that just has a number on it which is the latest version. Lets say 3.2.2 is displayed on www.myawesomephptool.com/version.html in some way shape or form . Now on their installation when they open up their admin page it pulls in that 3.2.2 as the latest version to see if they are on that version. So trying to keep it simple on requirements too.   • Tool for parsing smtp logs that finds bounces

    Our web application sends e-mails. We have lots of users, and we get lots of bounces. For example, user changes company and his company e-mail is no longer valid. To find bounces, I parse smtp log file with log parser. Some bounces are great, like 550+#[email protected]. There is [email protected] in bounce. But some do not have e-mail in error message, like 550+No+such+recipient. I have created simple ruby script that parses logs (uses log parser) to find which mail caused something like 550+No+such+recipient. I am just surprised that I could not find a tool that does it. I have found tools like zabbix and splunk for log analysis, but they look like overkill for such simple task. Anybody knows a tool that would parse smtp logs, find bounces and e-mails that cause them? Edit: smtp server is microsoft smtp server.

  • A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

    I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

  • problem with adding tool bar to UITableView

    I'm writing a Navigation-Based iPhone app, and I'd like to have a UIToolBar docked at the bottom of my screen, with a UITableView scrolling between the tool bar and the navigation bar. I used [[self navigationController] setToolbarHidden:NO] and - (void)setToolbarItems:(NSArray *)toolbarItems animated:(BOOL)animated to set the UIToolBar. UIToolBar correctly shows in current view. If I drill down into a detail view using the button on navigation bar, i cannot return back to previous view. Before I add the tool bar, it can return back. I am wondering is there anything else should be noted when use UIToolbar?

  • Windows disassembler: looking for a tool...

    Hello. I'm looking for a (preferably free) tool that can produce "proper" disassembly listing from a (non-.NET) windows PE file (*.exe or *.dll). Important requirement: it should be possible to run the listing through a windows assembler (nasm, masm or whatever) and get working exe again (not necessarily identical to original one, but it should behave in the same way). Intended usage is adding new subroutines into existing code, when source is not available. Ideally, tool should be able to detect function/segment boundaries, API calls, and generate proper labels for jumps (I can live without labels for loops/jumps, though, but function boundary detection would be nice), and keep program resources/segments in place. I'm already aware of IdaPRO(not free), OllyDBG (useful for in-place hacking, doesn't generate disassembly listing, AFAIK), ndisasm (output isn't suitable for assembler), dumpbin (useful, but AFAIK, output isn't suitable for assembler) and "proxy dll" technique. Ideas? Or maybe there is a book/tutorial that explains some kind of alternative approach?

  • MinGW - cross compile tool - latest version?

    At the MinGW download page you can download the "Cross-Hosted MinGW Build Tool" which is a shell script to build the "MinGW cross-compiler" so that you will be able to compile your programs on "Linux" to the "Windows" target. I have downloaded that script, run it and answered the interactive questions the script has asked me. I had to dowload some files from which one has name "gcc-core". And the "latest" version of the "gcc-core source code" I have found on that page, was "gcc-core-3.4.5-20060117-2-src.tar.gz" - so that "3.4.5" version. But on "Ubuntu Linux" I can download the precompiled "mingw32" package which is of the version "4.2.1". How is it possible that the "Ubuntu package" version of MinGW is newer than the one from the MinGW "homepage"? So which is the latest version of the "MinGW cross compile tool"?
