  I've inherited a rather large and somewhat messy codebase, and have been tasked with making it faster, less noodly and generally better. Currently we use one big database to hold all data for all aspects of the site. As we need to plan for significant growth in the future, I'm considering splitting tables relevant to specific sections of the site into different databases, so if/when one gets too large for one server I can more easily migrate some user data to different mysql servers while retaining overall integrity. I would still need to use joins on some tables across the new databases. Is this a normal thing to do? Would I incur a performance hit because of this?

• How can I kill MySQL queries every 60 seconds in Windows?

  I want to check my MySQL server every minute and kill queries that have run longer than 150 seconds. The main reason I want to do this is because I don't want queries from certain people to lock up the DB for everyone else. I know this is not the ultimate solution to the problem, but at least it's a fallback in case something goes wrong with a query. I don't have a slave DB (this is just an at-home project). I'd like to schedule a script to run that does this for me. I'm unfamiliar with Perl or Ruby and I need it done on my Windows 2008 Server box. I've looked into creating a simple cmd line script, but that doesn't seem to be possible. I know currently I can do something like this but I have to do it manually: mysqladmin processlist mysqladmin kill Anyone have any ideas or examples on how I could do this?

• Database for Large number of 1kB data chunks (MySQL?)

  I have a very large dataset, each item in the dataset being roughly 1kB in size. The data needs to be queried rapidly by many applications distributed over a network. The dataset has more than a million items (so 500 million+ 1kB data chunks). What would be the best method to storing this dataset (need to allow adding more items, and reading them rapidly, but never modifying already added data)? Would using a MySQL DB using the binary blob format be appropriate? Or should each of these be stored as files on a file system? edit: the number is 1 million items now, but needs to be able to scale to well over 500 million items easily.

I knew that I must have send data to PHP page/script, and this page/script will run on the data to insert record to database. I would like to know: is there another way to update database, because I don't have knowledge about PHP. I used to work on java and c/c++/objective-c. • How to reflect over T to build an expression tree for a query?

  Hi all, I'm trying to build a generic class to work with entities from EF. This class talks to repositories, but it's this class that creates the expressions sent to the repositories. Anyway, I'm just trying to implement one virtual method that will act as a base for common querying. Specifically, it will accept a an int and it only needs to perform a query over the primary key of the entity in question. I've been screwing around with it and I've built a reflection which may or may not work. I say that because I get a NotSupportedException with a message of LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.Object GetValue(System.Object, System.Object[])' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. So then I tried another approach and it produced the same exception but with the error of The LINQ expression node type 'ArrayIndex' is not supported in LINQ to Entities. I know it's because EF will not parse the expression the way L2S will. Anyway, I'm hopping someone with a bit more experience can point me into the right direction on this.   I currently have a table for products with it's own set of tags and a table for news with it's own set of tags. I wanted to add related news to the products page so I was thinking of using like but since the column tags in the products page is something like (Products) tags- manutd, man utd, football (news) tags - manutd, blah, bruha [this one is related] (news) tags - man, utd, bruha [this one is not related] I wanted to use a query to show all news containing any of the tags(from products) seperated by commas using mysql. How should I go about constructing such a query? If there is a better way of doing this a little explanation would be helpful too. Thanks

  using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Data; Thats my namespaces.. i was looking for System.Data.Linq; but it doesnt seem to be anywhere, and i guess that is what have been moved to System.Linq, since i have access to most other things in Linq. EDIT: found System.Data:Linq, no difference Here is my method: public void deleteStudienummer(int studienummer) { dbcontent = new DBEntities(); var dQry = from members in dbcontent.Medlemmer where members.Studienummer == studienummer select members; foreach (var member in dQry) { dbcontent.*** } dbcontent.AcceptAllChanges(); Console.WriteLine("delete member should have occured"); } The * was supposed to be DeleteOnSubmit, but i only have DeleteDatabase and DeleteObject, i tried with object but it doesnt work.. Have also tried dbcontent.Medlemmer.* but still not present. And AcceptAllChanges() was supposed to be .submitChanges() but that wasnt present either.

  Hi I started building apps with this technology and I am facing a weird problem... on some machines I need to add theese lines to the app.config to get to work: <system.data> <DbProviderFactories> <add name="MySQL Data Provider" invariant="MySql.Data.MySqlClient" description=".Net Framework Data Provider for MySQL" type="MySql.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlClientFactory, MySql.Data, Version=6.3.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d" /> </DbProviderFactories> </system.data> while in other machines it runs well without theese lines.... the thing is that when I add theese lines the app wont run on machines that did not needed theese lines in the firs place, and I would like not to publish to versions of the app, is there a way to solve this?

• Can I force MySQL to output results before query is completed?

  I have a large MySQL table (about 750 million rows) and I just want to extract a couple of columns. SELECT id, delid FROM tbl_name; No joins or selection criteria or anything. There is an index on both fields (separately). In principle, it could just start reading the table and spitting out the values immediately, but in practice the whole system just chews up memory and basically grinds to a halt. It seems like the entire query is being executed and the output stored somewhere before ANY output is produced... I've searched on unbuffering, turning off caches etc, but just cannot find the answer. (mysqldump is almost what I want except it dumps the whole table - but at least it just starts producing output immediately)

  Say that I have a long, expensive query, packed with conditions, searching a large number of rows. I also have one particular condition, like a company id, that will limit the number of rows that need to be searched considerably, narrowing it down to dozens from hundreds of thousands.   Hello. How would I get last 12 digits of a string using mysql? Let's say I have a varchar field with a tracking number, that may be anywhere from 5 to 20 varchars long. But I only need to select last 12 digits or less if there are less. so in a field = 12345678123456789012 I would only need to get what's in brackets field = 12345678[123456789012] I saw a few examples using mid, etc, but they dont' produce the desired result or I can't find an example that makes sense :-( Thank you.

  I have two related tables: Groups and Clients. Clients belongs to Groups so I have a foreign key "group_id" that references the group a client belongs to. I'm changing the Group id from an autoincrement to a UUID. So what I need is to generate a UUID for each Group and update the Clients table at once to reflect the changes and keep the records related. Is there a way to do this with multiple-table update on MySQL? Adding tables definitions for clarification. In my code I am trying to replace ” with " but it is not doing it as the special character in the replace command is changing to ".   Hi I have some fairly simple requirements but I'm not sure how I implement them: I have multiple concurrent threads running the same query The query supplies a 'string' value - if it exists in the table, the query should return the id of the matching row, if not the query should insert the 'string' value and return the last inserted id The 'string' column is (and must be) a text column (it's bigger than varchar 255) so I cannot set it as unique - uniqueness must be enforced through the access mechanism The query needs to be in stored procedure format (which doesnt support table locks in MySQL) How can I guarantee that 'string' is unique? How can I prevent other threads writing to the table after another thread has read it and found no matching 'string' item? Thanks for any advice..

It's really weird. Do you have an idea to fix that ? edit: it worked couple of days ago, because i created 2 databases and 2 users via phpmyadmin...   I am trying to write a PHP-MySQL database processor that is somewhat intelligent. When this processor decides it needs to make an update, I want to report if it was really successful or not. I thought I could use mysql_affected_rows... // Example: // After running query "UPDATE mytable SET name='Test' WHERE ID=1" $result = mysql_affected_rows(); if ($result >= 1) { /* Success */ } If, for example, there was no row with ID=1, then $result would be 0. However, it turns out that PHP's mysql_affected_rows is the actual affected rows, and may be still be 0 if the row exists but name was already "Test". (The PHP docs even say this is the case). If I run this in the command line, I get the following meta information about the query: Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec) Rows matched: 1 Changed: 0 Warnings: 0 Is there any way for me to get that "Rows matched" value in PHP instead of the affected rows?

• NHibernate will insert but not update after move to host with shared server running mysql.

  Hi, I have a site running MVC and Nhibernate (not fluent) using standard session per request in an http module, runs fine locally (also with mysql) but after a move to a hosting provider no update statements are being issued. I can insert but not update, no exceptions are raised, I have the 'show_sql' option switched on which locally shows the update statements being issued but on the server no update statements are logged. I don't think NHProf is an option for me as I can only run asp.net apps on my shared server, are there any other methods of diagnosing NH issues like this ? Anyone had a similar issue ? Cheers, A
