• How do I use rsync to sync my repo on my mac to university server where I have ssh access?

  I need to use my university's ssh access and run my programs there for testing. I don't have sudo access there. It doesn't have vncserver there either. I would work with vim and make but I need git at least. Now I am looking into rsync to sync my current source directory into a remote directory and I'll ssh into the directory and run my make file to test it. I am looking at the man page of rsync and it looks very complicated. Can anyone please help me with this? I have googled in superuser and all commands seem different for different cases. Can anyone please help me with this?

• How can I use my own, external IP instead of localhost with Glassfish?

  I am using Glassfish v3 to develop couple of servlets. For testing the servlets the localhost:8080/MyServlet is working fine. But whenever I am using IP instead of localhost, its returning an error, saying: Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to xxx.xx.xx.xxx:8080. The address in the Glassfish is already set to 0.0.0.0. I even tried changing the 0.0.0.0 to my IP but the Glassfish is not starting saying the port is not empty. It was not a problem with XAMMP while I used it for PHP development. I am using Windows 7.

• Power outage during disk wipe. What do I do now?

  I was using Roadkil Diskwipe on an external hard drive and the power went out. I had removed it from any outlet connection by the time power was restored to prevent power-spike damage (it's on a surge protector, but I didn't want to rely on that). My question is, where do I go from here? Obviously I don't care about preserving any data currently on it, I just want to make sure the drive itself is not terminally damaged. I'm running chkdsk (full), but I don't know if that's the correct step to assessing any damage. If it makes any difference, the hard drive was unallocated at the time of the outage, as Diskwipe requires that for it to run. Also, could something like this cause latent problems with the drive itself (i.e. serious issues that I won't be aware of when testing it now). I'd appreciate any program recommendations if chkdsk is not the most appropriate diagnostic route. Thank you.

• Setting up Apache directory root behavior

  I'm running Apache on a Windows machine for local testing and I'm new to it. Currently, if I navigate to localhost/ in a web browser, it will display an index.html page if one exists. Otherwise, it will display the directory listing. How can I make it so that navigating to a root directory will display more than index.html? What I need is so that if either: index.html, index.htm, or index.php exist, it will navigate to one of those. How can I disable showing directory roots? I would like it to return a 403 Forbidden error if no index page exists.

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck. For my project proposal, I need to calculate what is my server requirements to overcome the traffic I explained below? and if possible, I want to learn what is approximate cost of such server? I am giving the maximum expected values for calculation : -Database will be in mysql (Average service time of DB is 100-110ms in my computer[i5,4GB Ram]) -A request will transfer 150Kb data for each request on average. -Total user count : 1m -Active user count : 50k -Estimated request/sec for 1 active user : 0.06 -Total expected request/second to the server = ~5000 I am expecting this traffic between 20:00-1:00 everyday and then this values will decrease to 1/10 rest of the day. Is there any solution to this? [e.g increasing server capacity in a specific time period everyday to reduce cost]

  On my Debian server running a Django website, I have an error when I need to send an email. The error received is Exception Type: gaierror Exception Value: [Errno -2] Name or service not known Exception Location: /usr/lib/python2.6/socket.py in create_connection, line 547 You can see the full error log here. After testing, it seems it is my firewall that blocks the request. You can see my iptable file (/etc/init.d/firewall). I think the problem comes from the two commented lines that were supposed to accepts all established connections. When I uncomment them, I have an error iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.   Deployed Web Application Requests for User Name and Password I recently deployed a .NET web application into the server. Authentication mode is set to Windows (since the application is accessible only to Intranet users. Testing some machines, the application loads up properly. For some machines, a logon dialog window appears asking for User Name or Password. These dialog windows are those that you also normally see when you are trying to log into a Windows domain. Any idea why this happens randomly? Thanks.

• What is stable as Ubuntu in kernel space, but also cutting-edge as Fedora in user land?

  I am a long time Fedora user (since Fedora 6). Previously I have used Gentoo (for 2 years) and Slackware (for 5 years). The thing I liked about Fedora is frequency of package updates + great community. But lately I have noticed that Fedora is becoming too cutting-edge, nay, bleeding-edge. They changed the DNS client to be strict, without any warning, which broke some of their own packages for two Fedora releases. More critically, their LVM modules are not compatible across Fedora 12, 13, 14 (sometimes). Ubuntu is nicely polished but seems too stable for my liking. Some of the user-space applications are two major version numbers behind (even in testing or unstable or whatever they call it). Is there any Linux distro that has the stability of Ubuntu in kernel space and the bleeding edge in applications (especially harmless applications like, say, Stellarium)?

When during testing, something was not right and the content of the application needs to be changed. The distribution point keeps on serving the old content to the clients. I have tried redistributing to the distribution points and deleting old revisions but to no avail.

I use redhat server and sendmail and the testing was done with evolution mail. I had the following error : "RCPT TO<[email protected]> failed: <[email protected]>... relaying temporarily denied. • How can I redirect HTTPS(S) traffic to anothr gateway?

  I have a network like 192.168.0.0/15 with the default gateway set to 192.168.0.1. Al the workstations of the network use this gateway for all kind of accesses to the Internet. Now I am testing a new Internet connection with another provider and for this I am using a second gateway on the same subnet with 192.168.0.2 as IP address. I want to redirect only HTTP and HTTPS traffic to this second gateway without touching the address of the default gateway set inside every workstation. How can I accomplish this task? What I have to change inside the first's gateway firewall configuration or routes? I tried with a dnat like DNAT loc:192.168.0.1 loc:192.168.0.2 tcp 80 but nothing worked. I use Shorewall for simplicity in configuration but I can understand even theorical answers which I will try to adapt to my case

• RSAT and double accounts

  Since we are looking at migrating our domain admins to use non domain-admin accounts and runas for admin tasks a discussion has begun. How do others use RSAT with runas? I know you can Shift+RightClick run as other user to launch it with admin rights, but it looses the icon on the taskbar. The question also has been put, why do Microsoft release the RSAT tools if they recommend admins to run using non-domain accounts. Edit: Further to this, some of the initial testing with RSAT via the run as other user command hasn't worked out well. Few of the options don't function in the Hyper-V and Failover Cluster Manager.

  We have 2 servers. One is old server and another is the new one. Currently we about doing a migration because the old server is not capable enough to handle everyday requests. The specs are: Old server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx as Reverse Proxy Apache WSGI Python/Django New Server Ubuntu 10.04 Nginx Gunicorn Python/Django Celery+Redis Our manager asked us to research if the old server can perform multiple forwarding to all incoming request, for example, set Nginx of old server to forward all request to both old and new server. The purpose is to perform unit testing to new server using old server as comparer, see if the new server is ready to take over the role. Please help, if there is an idea, or must install some engine, or what we do is impossible. Many thanks.

• Backup software for Ubuntu - which one?

  Hi everybody, I have spent some time testing out different backup solutions for my small home office during the last weeks, but still haven't found anything that have been working out too well yet. We can definitely work with a non-GUI script if that's what it takes, if only the requirements are fulfilled: Upload to Amazon S3 Europe. We get unbelievable slow uploading speed to US, so uploading 400+ GB of data will not be happening anytime this year... Incremental backups - only changed files shall be uploaded or we will have a big bill from Amazon in the end of each month.. Files should not be uploaded in one big per-folder archive. This is not efficient at all, since if we change one file in a subfolder, a huge two-digit GB sized file would have to be uploaded during next backup. Not good for economy again, or traffic overhead on our internet connection. What options are available to us? Thanks!

• Network connectivity issue

  I am a novice cisco user and I am trying to investigate as to why one of our connections went down. We have a fiber network ring that is operating just fine. Connected to this ring via ethernet, is a lone 3560. This connection has worked flawlessly for the past year and a half. This morning, I noticed that I could not connect to that remote switch. I checked the configurations on both switches, and nothing has changed (as I expected). In the field, the port lights were flashing, indicating that some sort of communication is occurring. There is only 1 ethernet cable that has been run between these two locations, so testing an alternate path is not possible. What else can I do to fix this connection?

  We're using Lab Manager within our QA group. We use it to quickly deliver environments we need for testing. We have 25 Templates, 14 Library Configurations and counting. To build up our templates we: Create a base template that is a bare bones version of Server 2008 + basic configuration (Windows Update, Firewall exceptions) Create a linked clone for each Server template we need (SQL Server 08, 05, etc) Repeat for other OS's, like Windows 7 and Windows XP Then we create configurations: Create a workspace configuration with multiple images in it (Say Server 08 w/SQL Server and Windows 7) Deploy the configuration and make some minor configuration changes Undeploy and Capture to Library How do we keep this manageable? When I need to update a configuration, should I: Rebuild it from templates Clone it to a workspace, make changes, recapture it to the library keep the configuration in my workspace (don't delete it after capturing it to library), deploy it to make changes and then re-capture to library

Whenever we are at the point in our release cycle where we want to begin testing on staging I want to copy the production DB over to our staging server. I have setup snapshot replication to do this and have setup the staging server to have a pull subscription to the production DB. I want my continuous integration server to be able to kick off this process. How do I programmatically trigger a snapshot to be created and replicated? If there is a way to trigger this process is there a way to know when it's finished?

• MySQL Replication fix after server shutdown/start

  Server1 is Master Server2 is Slave Both are in our AWS testing env and we stop them once done with our work. When start again, Master rotates/creates new binary log file but slave keep looking for same/existing one and replication stops. Right now, I'm manually repairing it by (slave): stop slave; CHANGE MASTER TO MASTER_HOST='xx', MASTER_USER='xxx', MASTER_PASSWORD='xxx' , MASTER_LOG_FILE='new-mysql-bin.00000x',MASTER_LOG_POS=107; start slave; show slave status\G and slave becomes good again.Mysql is 5.5.x on Ubuntu 12.04. Will appreciate any help in automating it.

• Can an ESX server under heavy load cause cpu spikes on guest VM's?

  So we have a number of vm's running on an ESX 4.1 server for product testing. The ESX Server is at times under heavy load. We've been experiencing high CPU levels during some use cases, but we can't always duplicate this. If the ESX server as a whole is under heavy load could this cause guest machines to show high CPU usage? To ask it a different way, if the guest machines require more cpu resources than the server has, how does this affect CPU usage as indicated by the OS and process?

• Password protect app in jetty

  I am testing a webapp (.war) running in Jetty 7. For demo purposes I want to run this on a public URL, however I would like not to have the whole world (if they happen to come across the URL) be able to see it. Is there a way to make Jetty require a basic-auth type of authentication when accessing the webapp (without modifying anything inside the war, i.e. no edits on the web.xml file)? Or if not the webapp, then any part of what Jetty provides at port 8080?

  I am currently helping to implement an RFID inventory management system for my company. The software that we are locked into has been at best buggy and unreliable. The software provider is now rolling out a major release. My problem is that the new software release keeps a local database on each machine that then syncs to a master database online. According to the software company we cannot do a scaled rollout because of data corruption issues between the software releases. What questions can I be asking and what sort of testing can I do on my end to make sure this software works? Any suggestions would be very helpful.

  We have an isolated enviornment of a few hundred servers in which we use WSUS to push updates too. We have thousands of updates which to manage and push to devices testing along the way to ensure the update will not break anything. What are the best practices that you all follow in your enteprise networks to ensure an update does not go out to all the machines that will break something? We currently have ours broken into customized groups for each type of machine. There is one "Test Group" which has one PC of each type which we apply updates to for error checking. Is this a similar procedure others follow or is their an easier safer way to manage the thousands of WSUS updates?
