• Application.Idle causes high CPU usage

  Hello, I use the Application.Idle event to handle toolbar status (enable/disable) etc. quite extensively. As I'm beta testing Norton AntiVirus 2011, it brought to my attention that my app that I'm developing triggered a high CPU usage warning on at least one CPU. Sure enough, I opened the task manager and watched one of the four CPU's (quad core system) go to near 100%. I thought Application.Idle was the way to handle things when the application wasn't performing CPU tasks. Why is Application.Idle spiking the CPU? Here is how I attach to the event: AddHandler Application.Idle, AddressOf OnAppIdle Been using Application.Idle for a long time, never knew it would have this issue. Using VS 2010 .NET 4 Thank you.

• Possible to sort via two time stamps and display same row twice.

  I'm looking at creating a time table solution. I have a task sheet that looks like Area 1 item 1 startTime endTime Area 1 item1 startTime endTime I wish to create a display where I can view what even is happening next, either endTime or startTime i.e. Newcastle reel 16:45 18:45 Newcastle reel2 17:45 19:45 would output Newcastle reel 16:45 Newcastle reel 17:45 Newcastle reel 18:45 Newcastle reel 19:45 More so, I would like to detect if the time is a startTime or an endTime would I have to enter two rows for each activity (time,area,item, start|end). I can make the interface to the creation of two rows. I just wondered if there was a better solution. Any input is appreciated, Thanks, Jamie

• C# Windows Service Intermittent Method Call

  Scenario I have a C# Windows Service that essentially subscribes to some events and if anything is triggered by the events, it carries out a few tasks. The Thing... ....is that these events are monitoring processes, which I need to restart at certain times of the day. Question What's the best way I can go about performing this task at an exact time? Thoughts so far are: 1)To use a timer that checks what time it is every few minutes. 2)Something that isn't a timer and doesn't suck as an implementation. Help greatly appreciated.

• Rails 2.3.5 table populated by fixtures at end of test run rather than at start

  I start with a test database containing the schema but with no data in the tables. I run a test like so cd test/ ruby unit/directive_test.rb I get failures indicating that the code found no data in the data tables. However, I look at the tables after running that test and the data is now in the the table. In fact, if I immediately run the test again I get no failures. So it appears that the fixture is being loaded into the table too late for one of my modules to find it. When are the fixtures loaded? After or before the app/model/*.rb files are executed? If it is after the models are executed is there a way to delay the loading? This issue is also relevant when running rake test:units since that task clears the test data after it finished.

• Replacing a column in CSV file with another in bash

  I have a csv file with a number of columns. I am trying to replace the second column with the second to last column from the same file. For example, if I have a file, sample.csv 1,2,3,4,5,6 a,b,c,d,e,f g,h,i,j,k,l I want to output: 1,5,3,4,5,6 a,e,c,d,e,f g,k,i,j,k,l Can anyone help me with this task? Also note that I will be discarding the last two columns afterwards with the cut function so I am open to separating the csv file to begin with so that I can replace the column in one csv file with another column from another csv file. Whichever is easier to implement. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Simple modal div in jQuery?

  I have tried almost all of the jQuery Modal plkugins I can find on the net but they are all much to bulky for what I need. I dont need all the fancy features, I want to be able to open a div and have the background of the page go transparent grey like the photo below and have my div be on top of it, that is all I need to do so I would like to write some jquery to do this instead of using a bulky plugin. Does anyone have any small code that can do this task? Is the transparent background an image or just css?

• Can I improve performance by refactoring SQL commands into C# classes?

  Currently, my entire website does updating from SQL parameterized queries. It works, we've had no problems with it, but it can occasionally be very slow. I was wondering if it makes sense to refactor some of these SQL commands into classes so that we would not have to hit the database so often. I understand hitting the database is generally the slowest part of any web application For example, say we have a class structure like this: Project (comprised of) Tasks (comprised of) Assignments Where Project, Task, and Assignment are classes. At certain points in the site you are only working on one project at a time, and so creating a Project class and passing it among pages (using Session, Profile, something else) might make sense. I imagine this class would have a Save() method to save value changes. Does it make sense to invest the time into doing this? Under what conditions might it be worth it?

  I have the following situation I have a couple of table rows within a table eg <tr><td>One</td></tr> <tr><td>Two</td></tr> <tr><td>Three</td></tr> <tr><td>Four</td></tr> <tr><td>Five</td></tr> Say all of them are invisible Then I have a button to make them visible one by one, so if row 1 is invisible and I press the button then row 1 should be visible, if I press it again it sees that row 1 is already visible then it makes row 2 visible and so it goes on and on and on. How can I do this in Jquery so that jquery can accomplish this task for me. Is it possible?

• Setting many key/value pairs

  Hi, I'm working on a rake task which imports from a JSON feed into an ActiveRecord called Person. Person has quite a few attributes and rather than write lines of code for setting each attribute I'm trying different methods. The closest I've got is shown below. This works nicely as far as outputing to screen but when I check the values have actually been set on the ActiveRecord itself it's always nil. So it looks like I can't use .to_sym to solve my problem? Any suggestions?   Hello, I have a website with design mode on (aka. content editable = true) with some basic text on it. To that site I hooked up a shortcut so that at any point in the text I can insert an input box that serves me as an autocomplete. For that input however I want it to disappear right after I hit ENTER so that I can continue typing. It is an easy task to just make the input box disappear but I always loose focus from my document. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to make this work?

  I have some HUGE log files (50Mb; ~500K lines) I need to start filtering some of the crap out of. The log files are being produced using log4j and have the basic pattern of: [log-level] date-time class etc, etc log-message I'm looking for a way that I can identify a regex start and regex end (or something similar) that will filter out the matching entries from the file so I can more easily wade through these massive files. I'm sure I could write a java program to accomplish this task, but I thought I'd ask the community before going down that path. Thanks in advance.

The task itself isn’t too complicated except that once the first selection is made, I need to make a database call to pull the data for the second dropdown. This is where I am having difficulty.   While browsing with Chrome, I noticed that it responds extremely fast (in comparison with IE and Firefox on my laptop) in terms of rendering pages, including JavaScript heavy sites like gmail. This is what googlebook on Chrome has to say tabs are hosted in process rather than thread. compile javascript using V8 engine as opposed to interpreting. Introduce new virtual machine to support javascript heavy apps introduce "hidden class transitions" and apply dynamic optimization to speed up things. Replace inefficient "Conservative garbage colllection" scheme with more precise garbage collection scheme. Introduce their own task scheduler and memory manager to manage the browser environment. All this sounds so familiar, and Microsoft has been doing such things for long time.. Windows os, C++, C# etc compilers, CLR, and so on. So why isn't Microsoft or any other browser vendor taking Chrome's approach? Is there a flaw in Chrome's approach? If not, is the rest of browser vendor community caught unaware with Google's approach?

  Hi. I am developing an application in PHP on Linux/Apache. I want to be able to schedule PHP jobs (scripts) for execution at some specific time in the future from within the application. I know that many people will recommend cron and at, but first of all I don't need recurrence (cron) and secondly and most importantly, I need the solution to be able to scale. At was not designed with race condititions in mind, and if two users try to add a job at the same time one or both may fail. It's also important that jobs are executed at their specified time, and not just 'polled' once per minute or so. Can anyone please suggest solutions for this task? Thank you.

  I am using a bash script (below) on a remote server (so far using ssh to connect) to execute a python script that downloads a lot of pdf files one at a time (getting the download locations from a text file with the URL's) in a loop. I would like to move the files from the remote server to my local computer as they are downloaded, and then delete the file from the remote server.   Application we developed fills MS Word templates with data from Database. Customers require to have ability edit Word templates via MS Word (change style, font, layout e.t.c) with no additional software to be installed and no training. AFAIK, Sql Reporting Services and Crystal Reports can't populate MS Word templates produced in MS Word. So we implemented our custom solution that maps .net classes onto xml-saved MS Word documents. It looks like we declare class MyTemplate { // maps to [age] field declared in ms document straight in the text int Age { get; set; } // maps to table by attributes applied to property (omitted) List<Person> Persons { get; set; } } We also implemented images insertion. Are there any free libraries for this task or may be you use your own MS-word templators in your projects?

• Running applictions via ruby and multi-core support? (OSX)

  Hi All, I'm looking for some tutorials/resources/tips that will show me how to run applications via a ruby script. I have several small tools that we use in our day to day operations that I want to manage their tasks in one ruby script. Basically what I'm trying to do is: run app via ruby script. (wait for result) get result code (success, or error msg) if ok, start the app on its next task. Also each of the tasks are independent so I'd like to take advantage of the 8 cores on my MacPro and run 8 instances at a time. Any resources you could point me towards would be greatly appreciated!
