  Hi, Not a massive problem but something that has been bugging the life out of me... One of my colleagues was trying out some code on my machine and got the "There were build errors. Would you like to continue and run the last successful build?" pop-up when the build failed on Visual Studio. He clicked on the "don't show this again" checkbox and closed the dialogue. My problem is that I can't get the dialogue to show up again. I found these instructions online: "Select Tools, Options, Projects and Solutions, Build and Run. Then set the option "On run, when build or deployment errors occur" to Prompt to Launch." but that doesn't work. Resetting the IDE settings to default don't make any difference either. Is there any way to get this dialogue back or has it gone forever? Thanks, K

• Error TF31004 when connecting to TFS2008

  I'm trying to connect to a TFS2008 server through Visual Studio 2008 (Tools\Connect to Team Foundation Server) and get this error when trying to add our server: TF31004: Team Foundation encountered an unexpected error while connecting to Team Foundation Server . Wait a few minutes and try again. If the problem persists, contact your Team Foundation Server administrator. Needless to say, waiting doesn't help. I've tried using the ip address instead of the hostname but get the same error. I can log in via a browser, in fact IE and Chrome both SSO me straight in. The server is only used for testing one of our TFS plugins, so doesn't get much real use.

• GWT layout panels vs. CSS layout

  I read an article entitled "Tags First GWT", in which the writer suggests using GWT for event-handling, and CSS for layout. I just don't know whether the benefit of GWT's cross-browser compatibility goodness outweighs the flexibility offered by pure CSS layout. GWT GWT 2.0 has some snazzy layout panels, but to get them to resize properly you really need to build the entire panel containment tree from the root panel down. It's an all-or-nothing thing, it seems. CSS You can use CSS to layout an application too, and I'm inclined to do just that, if only to justify my purchase of several books touting the 'semantic markup' gospel. The downside might be cross-browser incompatibilities, the prevalence of which I have yet to determine. Which way to go? What is your opinion? Are cross-browser problems bad enough, and prevalent enough, to warrant ditching my CSS books, and building with GWT layout panels?

• Why won't OpenCV compile in NVCC?

  Hi there I am trying to integrate CUDA and openCV in a project. Problem is openCV won't compile when NVCC is used, while a normal c++ project compiles just fine. This seems odd to me, as I thought NVCC passed all host code to the c/c++ compiler, in this case the visual studio compiler. The errors I get are? c:\opencv2.0\include\opencv\cxoperations.hpp(1137): error: no operator "=" matches these operands operand types are: const cv::Range = cv::Range c:\opencv2.0\include\opencv\cxoperations.hpp(2469): error: more than one instance of overloaded function "std::abs" matches the argument list: function "abs(long double)" function "abs(float)" function "abs(double)" function "abs(long)" function "abs(int)" argument types are: (ptrdiff_t) So my question is why the difference considering the same compiler (should be) is being used and secondly how I could remedy this.

• WPF ShowDialog returns immediately

  Sometimes when I call ShowDialog on an OpenFileDialog Window in WPF, the dialog closes immediately with a return value of false. I'm calling ShowDialog in response to a button click event. I can reproduce this problem using the sample code for OpenFileDialog on MSDN: // Configure open file dialog box Microsoft.Win32.OpenFileDialog dlg = new Microsoft.Win32.OpenFileDialog(); dlg.FileName = "Document"; // Default file name dlg.DefaultExt = ".txt"; // Default file extension dlg.Filter = "Text documents (.txt)|*.txt"; // Filter files by extension // Show open file dialog box Nullable<bool> result = dlg.ShowDialog(); // Process open file dialog box results if (result == true) { // Open document string filename = dlg.FileName; } The problem occurs intermittently when I run my solution in Debug mode from Visual Studio 2008 SP1.   I have been succesfully using the command line database deployment tool VSDBCMD on my dev and test environments but the tool fails in our integration environmrnt. I am using the VS 2010 version of the tool. The servers have all of the prerequisites including: .net 4.0 sql server compact edition 3.5 sp1 (as well as the full edition of 2008) sql server 2008 server management objects sql server 2008 native client sql server system clr types msxml 6 all of the dependent DLLs included in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\desktop*.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5*.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSTSDB\Deploy**. The only reference to this error that I have been able to find has to do with a bug in the VS 2008 edition when the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0 key is missing. In my case the 10.0 version of the key exists. Has anyone else encountered this?

  Hello, I have a Model-Driven Struts2 action that provides correct JSON response. When I re-structure the action I get an empty JSON response back. Has anyone got inheritance working with Struts2 Model-Driven actions?   I want to setup my database with initial data programmatically. I want to populate my database for development runs, not for testing runs (it's easy). The product is built on top of Spring and JPA/Hibernate. Developer checks out the project Developer runs command/script to setup database with initial data Developer starts application (server) and begins developing/testing then: Developer runs command/script to flush the database and set it up with new initial data because database structures or the initial data bundle were changed What I want is to setup my environment by required parts in order to call my DAOs and insert new objects into database. I do not want to create initial data sets in raw SQL, XML, take dumps of database or whatever. I want to programmatically create objects and persist them in database as I would in normal application logic. One way to accomplish this would be to start up my application normally and run a special servlet that does the initialization. But is that really the way to go? I would love to execute the initial data setup as Maven task and I don't know how to do that if I take the servlet approach. There is somewhat similar question. I took a quick glance at the suggested DBUnit and Unitils. But they seem to be heavily focused in setting up testing environments, which is not what I want here. DBUnit does initial data population, but only using xml/csv fixtures, which is not what I'm after here. Then, Maven has SQL plugin, but I don't want to handle raw SQL. Maven also has Hibernate plugin, but it seems to help only in Hibernate configuration and table schema creation (not in populating db with data). How to do this?

• Is it safe to delete the "ipch" folder - Precompiled headers?

  Hello, I was looking through the folder for an application I am working on and noticed the "ipch" folder, for my solution which has two small projects it weighs in at about 90mb+ in size. I have found an article discussing the use for the files and was wondering if they were safe to delete? It's for an assignment hand in and I would like to keep the electronic hand in as small as possible. If I were to delete the folder will the application remain in a safe and stable state? The Immediate Window shows the message "Stepping over method without symbols 'Some.Namespace.Here'" How can i make sure the method always has symbols?! I need to step into every line of code. I am pressing F8 (which is "Step Into" in VS2008, from memory i think it used to be F11 in VS2005). This debugger stuff has always confused me: At the Solution level Property Pages i see a configuration dropdown with 4 values: Active (Debug), Debug, Release, All Configurations. - currently set to "Active (Debug)" At the Project level, i see a configuration dropdown with 2 values: Debug, Release. - currently set to "Debug"

• why is there no interface file with silverlight enabled wcf services

  Using Visual Studio 2010 when creating a wcf service the template creates a class file, svc endpoint and an interface file. Why is it that when adding a silverlight-enabled wcf service they don't follow this pattern. As discussed here this seems like a bad idea. After adding the silverlight-enabled service, should one go back and incorporate the interface as discussed in the referenced article. If so, then would it not be as simple to start with a simple WCF service, bypassing the whole "silverlight-enabled" bits altogether.

• Roll up project-level tasks to the project collection portal in TFS2010

  I have a Project Collection setup in my TFS2010RC deployment. I have two Projects setup under this collection with their own task lists, which are populated with data. I fully expected the tasks from these individual projects to "roll up" and appear in the task list at the Project Collection level, but they do not. The Project Collection task list is empty. Basically, I'm looking to provide a view so a supervisor could see all tasks across projects quickly and easily. I'm sure I could write a reporting services report, but it seems like this is something so basic that it would have been included and it just need to be turned on or something. I'm sure I'm probably missing something really simple here. Thanks.

  Hi, I'm using JQTOUCH and in JQTOUCH several of the links are being loading via AJAX and then sliding in. The problem is that there is no loading indication provided to users. I'd like a way to add a Loading class with an AJAX spinner, when ever the an ajax call is loading, and have the class removed when the loading is done, and the page is displayed. Any ideas?

• App.Config Ignored After Pre-Build Event

  I have a solution with several projects and several developers, each with their own environment (of course). To manage connection strings between each environment, I have created several app.config files for each environment: app.config.dev, app.config.qa, etc. The pre-build event simply copies the app.config.$(ConfigurationName) to app.config. This pre-build event is done for each project in the solution, and the config string is included in each (including the test project). When I use the pre-build events to manage the app.config files, the connection string cannot be found. I can get the tests to run fine by 2 methods: 1. Do not use the pre-build events to manage the app.config file selection, and do it myself or 2. If I check out app.config and make it writable, then the pre-build events work just fine. We are using Visual Studio 2008. I'm down to my last grey hair here, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  I have a SmartGWT webapp that uses a TreeGrid with a dataSource. I would like this treeGrid to preselect values saved in a cookie. I have gotten the value to be saved in the cookie correctly, however I have tried several different methods of getting the treeGrid to select these values and I can not get it to work. I am attempting to do this in the onmoduleLoad method in my entry point. I have tried: Cookies.setCookie( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelectedPaths() ) to set the cookie and then when the page is reloaded: TreeGrid.setSelectedPaths( Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit" ) When I could not get that to work, I tried storing just the id of the item selected: Cookies.setCookies( "selectedUnit", TreeGrid.getSelected().getAttribute("id") ) and then onLoad attempting to find that record and select it: TreeGrid.selectRecord( TreeGrid.getTree().find("id", Cookies.getCookie("selectedUnit") ) ) This did not work either, so finally I tried storing TreeGrid.getSelectedState() and upon retrieving that value form the cookie onLoad, passing it to TreeGrid.setSelectedState() similar to my first attempt, but passing state instead of path. I could not get any of these things to work. Can I not tell the TreeGrid to select an item in the 'OnmoduleLoad' method? Is this action only valid after the TreeGrid has been drawn? If that is the case where and how can I do this? Thank you in advance for any help you can give.

  I have a Visual Studio setup project that installs an application into the task scheduler and also installs a GUI application to manage some configuration parameters in the registry. This being the case, the setup project installs two different primary outputs (.exe's) as part of the process. I am getting the following warning when I rebuild the setup project: Configuration file 'C:\my\App.Config' is being used to configure all executables Is there any way to remove this warning? The suggested MSFT solution apears to be to use a different setup project for each .exe, but I only want the users to have to run one installer. Any suggestions?

• Can I turn off context menu scrolling in VS2010?

  When I right-click in the middle of a code editor window in Visual Studio 2010 RTM, a context menu appears. This takes up about a fourth the height of the screen but doesn't show all options. Instead it scrolls up and down when you move the pointer to the top or bottom of the menu. If I click near the top or bottom of the screen, the menu is normal and doesn't scroll. Can I turn this behavior off? It's stupid. You can't even scroll using the mouse wheel. EDIT I reckon this might just be a bug - I've found a few.

• "Best" language /architecture for browser-based app with ODBC and sockets? (subjective)

  Sorry to ask a subjective question, but I would welcome some advice. I am an experienced programmer of embedded s/w, but haven't done much network programming, although I have done a fair bit of hobbyist PHP. Am I right? Then client is insisting on MSIE - unless I can show compelling technical reasons for FireFox or other then it will have to be MSIE (are there any compelling technical reasons?). So, with MIE (almost) a given, I had though to use PHP, since I know it, but the client seems awfully keen on Java (which ought to be OK since I am conversant with C++) it woudl seem to make sense to use the same language for the "upper" interface between the web pages (which that app generates) and the d/b, and for the "lower" interface between the d/b and the socket. (a single language means a single set of tools since text approach, etc) So, the (probably highly subjective) question is "which language shoudl I choose". As I say, the client is keen on Java. Any compelling reason why not? Is it generally a good choice for the sort of thing described here? Any other hints & tips gratefully appreciated (and up-voted): URLs, books, tool chain suggestions, etc, etc

  Hi All, I very often come across this question of why we have got lots of web frameworks addressing the same or similar drawbacks. when looking deeply, i also have given thought on why JSP / Servlets is not being used after the other web frameworks (like Struts, Spring MVC etc) have shown their existence? Is it because, the latest web frameworks does most of the things on its own? provides extensive features that is not available with Servlet / JSP? or the Servlet / JSP is impotent to deliver what latest framework does?
