  • From .psd to working HTML and CSS - help me suck less

    I am not much of a designer. My strength lies in coding. That said, I'm often forced into the role of "The Man," responsible for all aspects of site creation. So, that said I'm wondering if the pros can give me tips/solutions/links to tutorials to my main questions. Resolution. What should I aim for? What are the lower and upper edges I should be aware of? I know that systems like 960 Grid were popular recently. Is that the number I should still aim for? Slicing up a .psd - are there any tricks I should know? I've always found it difficult to get my slices pixel perfect. I'm also really slow at it. I must be looking at it wrong, or missing something fundamental. The same goes for text. Layouts are always filled with the classic "Lorem...", but I can never seem to get real content to fit quite as well on the screen. The advanced (to me, anyway) looking things, like a part of a logo/image overlaying what looks like a content area. How does one do that? How do layouts change/are informed by the decision to go fixed or liquid? Again, any tips/tricks/suggestions/tutorials you can share would be greatly appreciated.

  • 2D Tile Map files for Platformer, JSON or DB?

    I'm developing a 2D platformer with some uni friends. We've based it upon the XNA Platformer Starter Kit which uses .txt files to store the tile map. While this is simple it does not give us enough control and flexibility with level design. Some examples: for multiple layers of content multiple files are required, each object is fixed onto the grid, doesn't allow for rotation of objects, limited number of characters etc. So I'm doing some research into how to store the level data and map file. Reasoning for DB: From my perspective I see less redundancy of data using a database to store the tile data. Tiles in the same x,y position with the same characteristics can be reused from level to level. It seems like it would simple enough to write a method to retrieve all the tiles that are used in a particular level from the database. Reasoning for JSON: Visually editable files, changes can be tracked via SVN a lot easier. But there is repeated content. Do either have any drawbacks (load times, access times, memory etc) compared to the other? And what is commonly used in the industry?     I'd like to backup content of my blog which is powered by posterous.com. I'd like to save all texts and images to the local disk. Ability to browse it offline is a plus. What I've already tried: wget wget -mk http://myblogurl It downloads the first page with list of posts, then stops with "20 redirections exceeded" message.     I am trying to understand why my production environment might be disallowing HTTP RANGE requests. I have a pool of W2K8x64/IIS7 servers behind a pair of Netscaler 9000s.     I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? So far we have: Nintendo Wii Playstation 3 XBox 360 And we're looking to purchase a current generation AppleTV. update The sites are YogisAnonymmous.com and YogaJournal.com, both are confirmed as Flash.

    What is the best way to backup/restore my USB drive that I use for my Xbox? I want to make sure that if the USB drive goes, that I can retrieve my saved games and such onto another USB drive. I was able to show the content of the drive, however, I wasn't sure if I could simply copy the content onto a Truecrypt volume and be able to restore it from there at a later date. The file system is not FAT or NTFS, wasn't sure about the impacts of copying from two different file systems... I currently have a DataTraveler G3 16GB.   • Suggestions for a CMS markup language for PHP

    As a learning experience, and as project, I am attempting to write a CMS module for ZF2. One of the functionality I would like to have is the possibility of adding dynamic contents in the pages by calling PHP functions in the view scripts. However, I do not want to give the users freedom in writing PHP code directly inside the page content, but rather implement custom view helpers (or widgets) to handle logic. For example: calling partial, partialLoop, url, etc. specifying arguments and all. I liked the idea of extending Markdown but this would get complicated when trying to add custom CSS class to elements, etc. Then I had the idea of simply doing a preg_replace on some patterns. For example, the string : ### partialLoop:['partials/display.phtml',[{id:'p1',price:4.99},{id:'p2',price:12.34}]] ### would be replaced by <?php echo $this->partialLoop('partials/display.phtml', array(array('id'=>'p1','price'=>4.99),array('id'=>'p2','price'=>12.34))) ?> Obviously, there would be some caching done so the page content is not rendered everytime. Does this sound good? If not, what would be a good way of doing this? Or is there a project already being developed for doing this? (I'd like to avoid heavy third party libs and something fairly or fully compatible with ZF2 would be nice.) Thanks.

  • Multi language site - use of canonical link and link rel="alternate"

    I keep reading everywhere that if you have a multilanguage site, where the same page appears in, say, French and English, then this is considered as duplicate content by google. It is written that using canonical link is the solution, but I do not understand how to use it in this case. Should I: Choose either French URL or English URL to be the canonical (main) one, and where I will place the canonical link? If so, how do I decide which of the two URLs must be canonical? both languages are important to me and I want the content under both languages to be indexed by google and served to the user, depending on the language in which he searches. OR should I place a canonical link on both French and English URLs? If so, then I do not understand the meaning of using the canonical link? In this case would both URLs be indexed, are both of them considered as "important" by google and not duplicates? Also I read that link rel="alternate" can be used to indicate to google that, for example the French URL is the French-language equivalent of the English page. This makes sense and I understand how to use such links, but how are they combined with canonical links? Should I define both the canonical URL AND specify rel="alternate" in both URLs? Could someone help me to clarify this, cause I'm stuck with this and can't seem to find a good-enough explanation in different sources.

    I am planning to setup nginx as reverse proxy. I will have apache to deliver my dynamic content, and nginx will deliver the static content. My configuration i have now is just Apache with fastCGI. This gives me no configuration problems and runs great. After I have set up nginx I want to run some benchmarks to see if I really got some performance increases, else i will switch back. Does anyone know how I can benchmark this type of setup? Or maybe someone did this already and have some canned results, I will be glad to hear them.

  • 401 - Unauthorized On Server 2008 R2 IIS 7.5

    I have a web application deployed to Server 2008 IIS 7.5 box. From remote it gives this error: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. (remote = desktops on the same LAN) Have tried several remote clients using different browsers, all the same result. (IE, FF, and Chrome) Hitting the application from the desktop of the server itself works flawlessly. However I have not tried Firebug on the server desktop. I would assume it's still issuing a 401 status code yet returning the content anyway. See Update #2. The application is using Anonymous Authentication. The application is written in .NET 4.0 Asp.Net using the MVC framework. Static content works fine, example: http://server.com/content/image.jpg Sysinternals procmon returns these 2 results for each request: FAST IO DISALLOWED and PATH NOT FOUND. I have 2 other MVC apps running fine on the same server. I have checked the security on the folders and they all match. App runs fine on a Server 2008 IIS 7.0 box. Nothing shows up in the Event log on the server related to this. Pulling my hair out here, any troubleshooting tips? UPDATE #1: This just get's more WTF as I dig. If I click on the Application in IIS Manager - Error Pages - Edit Feature Settings select Detailed Errors, the app works remotely. Not leaving this on, so problem is not solved yet, its just more confusing. UPDATE #2: Using Firebug, I see that the Status is still 401 Unauthorized, but the Response is returning the application's correct HTML.   • Conditional attribute in XML - most concise solution?

    I am tasked with setting up conditional profiling - a method of tagging chunks of XML with an attribute, which will then be used as a conditional value to extract subset of that XML. Have a look at another definition/example: DITA profiling The XML is documents that are equivalent to printed books - i.e. documents that are often looked at by a human, even if indirectly. Therefore I am looking at a few requirements here: 1. keeping the value list brief - so it doesn't affect the readability of the document 2. be able to process with standard XML tools - a space-separated list inside an attribute is still probably fine, but I'd rather not use too much regexp for this 3. be obvious for various users, including 3rd parties, which content goes where 4. Be easy to maintain going forward Therefore one easy solution is: The problem with this: 1. As the list grows the value of the attribute can be a bit verbose 2. One needs to explicitly state every value even if it's a scenario of this vs everything else Therefore I am also looking at other approaches such as: 1. Using + and - modifiers, Apache htaccess style to override the default cascading of profiling - by default all content goes everywhere and if we want to exclude a bit we just say "-kindle". It does require parsing the whole tree, is not supported by editing tools and one needs to regexp the attribute value a bit deeper... 2. Using an intermediate file to define groups of values such as "other" or "non-print", example of this in DITA. It allows concise XML as well as different grouping and values for each document but it does create a certain level of abstraction which may make it a little less obvious for a 3rd party? Altogether, if you received such XML and were tasked to process it, which option you'd rather receive? If you have any experiences like that, even in an unrelated areas such a builds, don't hesitate to comment!

    I have migrated my sitecollection(migsitecollection) to different farm using content deployment job. http://vsmoss/sites/migsitecollection I used collaboration portal to create it.Its working fine from where I migrated it but after running content deployment jobs my new migrated site global navigation settings are not getting saved when I am trying ot change them by going in settings-Navigation and in logs I can see this error The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt. I saw on net the solution for this problem is changing onet.xml and running script on sql database for the site, I am eager to better answer than this but if its the same I have few doubts on it: First,As my site template is not customised its the collobartion portal so I am not sure where exactly to change the onet.xml. Second, I am using the same database as of my webapplication running that script would not affect anything else on the main site of mine?

  • Prevent Eclipse Java Builder from Compiling Java-Like Source

    I'm in the process of writing an eclipse plugin for my programming language Whiley (see http://whiley.org). The plugin is working reasonably well, although there's lots to do. Two pieces of the jigsaw are: I've created a "Whiley Builder" by subclassing incremental project builder. This handles building and cleaning of "*.whiley" files. I've created a content-type called "Whiley Source Files" for "*.whiley" files, which extends "org.eclipse.jdt.core.javaSource" (this follows Andrew Eisenberg suggestion). The advantage of having the content-type extend javaSource is that it immediately fits into the package explorer, etc. In principle, I could fleshout ICompilationUnit to provide more useful info, although I haven't done that yet. The disadvantage is that the Java builder is trying to compile my whiley files ... and it obviously can't. Originally, I had the Java Builder run first, then the Whiley builder. Superficially, this actually worked out quite well since all of the errors from the Java Builder were discarded by the Whiley Builder (for whiley files). However, I actually want the Whiley Builder to run first, as this is the best way for me to resolve dependencies between Java and Whiley files. Which leads me to my question: can I stop the Java builder from trying to compile certain java-like resources? Specifically, in my case, those with the "*.whiley" extension. As an alternative, I was wondering whether my Whiley Builder could somehow update the resource delta to remove those files which it has dealt with. Thoughts?

    This week we’ve been discussing a new online event, “Transform Your Business by Connecting People, Processes, and Content.” This event will include a number of Oracle partners presenting on their successes with transforming their customers by connecting people, processes, and content: Deloitte - Collaboration and Web 2.0 Technologies in Supporting Healthcare, delivered by Mike Matthews, the Canadian Healthcare partner and mandate partner on Canadian Partnership Against Cancer at Deloitte InfoSys - Leverage Enterprise 2.0 and SOA Paradigms in Building the Next Generation Business Platforms, delivered by Rizwan MK, who heads InfoSys' Oracle technology delivery business unit, defining and delivering strategic business and technology solutions to Infosys clients involving Oracle applications Capgemini - Simplifying the workflow process for work order management in the utility market, delivered by Léon Smiers, a Solution Architect for Capgemini. Wipro - Oracle BPM in Banking and Financial Services - Wipro's Technology and Implementation Expertise, delivered by Gopalakrishna Bylahalli, who is responsible for the Transformation Practice in Wipro which includes Business Process Transformation, Application Transformation and Information connect. In Mike Matthews’ session, one thing he will explore is how to CPAC has brought together an informational website and a community. CPAC has implemented Oracle WebCenter, and as part of that implementation, is providing a community where people can make connections and share their stories. This community is part of the CPAC website, which provides information of all types on cancer. This make CPAC a one-stop shop for the most up-to-date information in Canada.
