  • Why is Window.open()'s return type void ?

    Doing something like this is perfectly permissible in javascript: var newWindow = window.open(...) However, this does not work in the senario of GWT (I am using 1.5 I dont know about later versions), Window window = Window.open("", "", ""); Throws me a compile time error that the open is a method with a return type as void. Why should it be void ? What if i want to close my popup from the main Window ? how do I get its handle ? I will have to resort to native javascript no doubt but i was just curious so as to why this is so...

  • Looking for Opinions and Sugestions on my Website. (General Question)

    I am looking for general opinions and suggestions about the site in whole. Its ok I don't mind hearing where I went wrong on anything. I'm still learning. All tips and pointers on any subject relating are highly welcome. If you are going to make a suggestion and post a snippet or code please explain how it works in detail. The site was design as a interface to display the labs I have to do in my college (the labs are all basic things that I'm way beyond). So I decided to take it all to the next level with this. The link is http://opentech.durhamcollege.ca/~intn2201/brittains/labs/ It is 100% designed by me with the exception of the icons. (I could not think of anything better to draw) There is no specific area of the site I want suggestions or opinions on this is a general question. You may answer about the site in whole or an area of the coding just please specify. If you have any questions related to my site or code you may ask them as well.   • IE8 Accordion menu is throwing out some weird bugs

    I have an accordion side menu in my latest project that works in all modern browsers properly, apart from ie8. In Ie8, using the menu and clicking results in random padding and margins to be added and sometimes disappear for no apparent reason. I can't find any bit of jquery code that would potentially cause this to happen which is a pain. Even more confusing is the fact that this doesn't happen in Ie7 =S Can anyone here replicate this bug, and see what the problem is? Project Demo to view in ie8

  • Using jquery to prevent resubmitting form

    I use jquery's .submit() to intercept user's submit event, however I found a problem. When the user single click the submit button, the form is submitted normally, but if a user deliberately fast click it multiple times, it will submit multiple times, which will cause duplicated data in the database. What's the solution for this kind of problem ?

  • Technical reasons for not having large background images in websites

    Most websites tend to have either a solid color as background, or a small image that is repeated. Why aren't more websites using a large image (such as a photo) as background? I can think of the following reasons: 1) Problems with different screen resolutions. Too small and gaps start to appear on the left and/or right side for higher resolutions, too big and lower resolutions only show part of the image. 2) Bandwidth. Although this is unlikely to be a problem for most websites. Are there any other reasons why such backgrounds are not being used more often?

  • ABSMIDDLE works differently on firefox and chrome?

    Hi, i have an icon image and text like the following, the code source of everything is : <img src="...." align="absmiddle" /> My Title Here The problem is that the icon is not aligned vertically with the title in chrome better than firefox. I think the absmiddle doesn't work at all ! is there any solution, i don't want to use a table with 2 columns to fix this issue. Thanks

    hi does anyone know any sort of app that lets users visit a page on their mobile phone, enter information and have it update the website i believe the term is "mobile-blogging" but there isn't all that much on google or, is there any good resources for coding pages specifically for a mobile phone?   • How to convert UTF-8 and Unicode to normal text ?

    I have a downloader program that download pages from internet . the encoding of each page is different , some are in UTF-8 and some are Unicode. For example : &#97; that shows 'a' character ; pages full of this characters .We should convert this encodings to normal text . I used the UnicodeEncoding class in c# , but they do not help me . How can i decode this encodings to real characters? Is there a class or method that converting this ? Thanks .

  • can't click on input element behind div element

    On my site: http://alsite.com.br/solalev/ I have some elements on the bottom of page that I can't click through. Above the elements is a div called push.. I use this div to make the footer always stay on the bottom of my page even when the content is smaller... (I dont know if I do this right.. but it has worked).. So.. on Chrome and Firefox I can't click.. but on IE this works.... I use this: .push{ pointer-events: none; } but nothing happens...

    I'll try to explain this as best I can. I have multiple divs that are fixed-width but variable height. I want to float these boxes into two columns inside a fixed-width container. What happens when a give them all a float: left value, I get something like this: ######### ######### # box 1 # # box 2 # ######### # ..... # ......... # ..... # ......... ######### ######### ######### # box 3 # # box 4 # # ..... # # ..... # ######### ######### ######### ######### # box 5 # # box 6 # # ..... # ######### # ..... # ######### (The periods are white space) What I really would really like is the top of box 3 to touch the bottom of box 1. Any easy way to acheive this?

  • What's a good icon to represent a legend or a key for a diagram?

    I'm implementing a small web app widget that shows a legend/key for a diagram (or chart/map/graph/whatever), but only during mouseover of the widget. It's basically just going to be a div with a background image. What would be a good icon that communicates "I show the legend" or "I am the legend" to the unfamiliar users? I'm looking for something in the 10x10 to 20x20 pixel range. Assuming that a legend is the same thing as a key (is it?) then I could use a small icon of a key (like you'd unlock a door with) but that seems cheesy or unclear at worst. I'm not sure that's really the clearest way to do it. Is there an icon that should instantly remind users of a legend?
