• Play Shoutcast MP3 radio stream with Python?

  I have managed to create an online radio station using Shoutcast and Sam Broadcaster. Now, I am wanting to build my own player for that radio station. I am not sure where to begin, I have googled, but no luck. I am using Python 2.6 on Microsoft Windows. I have managed to capture the stream and save it as an MP# on the hard disk, just not sure what to do with it next. I tried playback of the file, but it always pulls up errors. This is the code I have so far: import urllib target = open("broadcast.mp3") conn = urllib.urlopen("http://78.159.104.175:80") while True: target.write(con.read(5200)) Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• ADO.NET: Faster way to check if the database server is accessible?

  At the moment I am using this code to check if the database is accessible: public bool IsDatabaseOnline(string con) { bool isConnected = false; SQLConnection connect = null; try { connect = new SQLConnection(con); connect.Open(); isConnected = true; } catch (Exception e) { isConnected = false; } finally { if (connect != null) connect.Close(); } return isConnected; } While this code works fine, there is a disadvantage. If the server is not online it spends about 4 full seconds trying to open the connection before deciding that it is not available. Is there a way to test the connection without trying to actually opening it and waiting for the timeout? Something like a database-equivalent of ping?

• Good way to cache data during Android application lifecycle?

  Hello, keeping my question short, I have creating application with 3 activities, where A - list of categories, B - list of items, C - single item. Data displayed in B and C is parsed from online XML. But, if I go trough A - B1 - C, then back to A and then back to B1 I would like to have it's data cached somewhere so I wouldn't have to request XML again. I'm new to Android and Java programming, I've googled a lot and still can't find (or simply do not have an idea where to look) a way to do what I want. Would storing all received data in main activity A (HashMaps? ContentProviders?) and then passing to B and C (if they get same request that was before) be a good idea?

  Just curious to know if anyone has ever used gametutorials.com products for learning directX. I was debating on whether I should buy it or not. I read online that most of his tutorials were written in the source code. It's nice to heavily comment your code but if most of the tutorial is in his code then I don't think that is necessarily the best way to do a tutorial.   hi i play a game called maplestory because a LOT of my friends do and i want to talk to them online and they will only chat on maplestory because they are playing it. i would like to build a program that will send my chats to maplestory and it will be a small little chat window because i can't do much well im chatting on Maplestory. i have tryed sending my fake input to maplestory but their anti-hack shield blocks it, i can't find a way by it with out running a by pass to their anti-hack shield which i don't really want to do :( so i need a way to send stuff by so i can chat. please don't tell me to use a by pass i really would like to find a way to leave it running. also i only really need keyboard input not really the mouse because to chat you only have to hit enter then type text then enter to send, but hey it might come in useful. also if the way only works for the top window i can just make something that swhitchs back and forth.

• IE6 https security message appearing after closing jQuery colorbox overlay

  I am working on a secure site, https. I am using the colorbox jquery plugin to iframe another page from the same site over the current content. In IE6 when i close the colorbox overlay i get the following message: "This page contains both secure and nonsecure items. Do you want to display the nonsecure items?" Any ideas why this is happening? Can it be prevented? Assume i would have to make the whole site http rather than https but this is not possible as we have online payments.

  I have a requirement to write a web service that allows me to post an image to a server along with some additional information about that image. I'm completely new to developing web services (normally client side dev) so I'm a little stumped as to what I need to look into and try. How do you post binary data and plain text into a servic? What RequestFormat should I use? It looks like my options are xml or json. Can I use either of these?   I'm beginning the process of learning the ins and outs of developing sites for mobile web browsers. Are there any good resources/communities online that discuss mobile specific site development issues? My initial understanding is that to cover different phones you need to build one site that is enabled for browsers with the webkit engine (iphone, android, etc.) and another more basic site for other older browsers, is this assumption correct? Also what does developing for webkit mean exactly? How is it different than just using javascript/css/html? Is it the same except that you limit yourself to webkit specific functions and css? I looked on the webkit site, but it didn't explain it in those terms. Are there any other snafus I need to watch out for when developing for mobile browsers?

• Linking Libraries in Xcode

  Hey all, I'm using a powerbook (osx 10.5) and recently downloaded and installed FFTW 3.2 (link text). I've been able to compile and run some simple programs based on the online tutorial using the terminal: g++ main.cpp -lfftw3 -lm however, I can't get the same program to compile in Xcode. I get a linking error, "symbol(s) not found". There is a file called libfftw3.a in /usr/local/lib. How can this be linked? Furthermore, apparently the libraries have to be linked in a particular order, i.e. see: link text thanks for any help

  As a software developer one sometimes gets feature requests that seem to be in some kind of morally grey area. Sometimes one can deflect them, or implement them in a way that feels less 'evil' - sometimes - on reflection - while the feature request 'feels' wrong theres no identifiable part of it that actually causes harm. Sometimes one feels a feature is totally innocent but various anti virus products start tagging one as malware. For example - I personally consider EULAs to (a) hopefully be unenforceable and (b) a means by which rights are REMOVED from consumers. However Anti Virus scanners frequently mark as malware any kind of download agent that does not display a EULA. Which to me is the result of a curious kind of double think. What I want to know is - are there any online (or offline) resources that cover evil software development practices? How can I know if a software practice that I consider dodgy is in fact evil enough to consider fighting?

  Poking around options for integrating an online app with Quickbooks, I've made a lot of headway with QBWC, but it's fairly ugly. From an end user perspective the usability of QBWC is pretty low. Intuit is now pushing Intuit Partner Platform (IPP) and Intuit Data Services (IDS). I can't quite figure out what these are about: Is IPP limited to using Flex, or can it work with existing web apps? Are there APIs for actual data exchange? Is it possible to interact with desktop Quickbooks using IPP or IDS? If there is sample code, particularly in Python, some pointers would be great.

  I'm currently working on a project for a web application that may be installed on several different servers with various software configurations. I want to make my application as flexible as possible by allowing the user to have various SQL servers installed. The problem is the SQL syntax used by any two server vendors does not match up. For a simple example, here is the same SELECT statement for MS SQL and MySQL: MS SQL - SELECT TOP 1 * FROM MyTable ORDER BY DateCreated DESC MySQL - SELECT * FROM MyTable ORDER BY DateCreated DESC LIMIT 1 Are there any standard way to abstract the statement creation for various vendors? • Control Philips Living Colors using PC

  Hi guys, is there a way (hardware/software-combination) that I can use to control one or more "Philips Living Colors" lamps using a PC - e.g. a USB-stick that acts as the "remote". This way i could control the lamp through software (e.g. a web-app - over iPhone / remotely) or even create what Philips builds into some of their TVs and calls "ambilight" (graphics driver detecting the main color to control the lamp). I guess this is more like a hardware than a software question - but I couldn't find anything about this online and I'm sure not to be the first to have come up with this idea right when I unpacked my LivingColors lamp yesterday ;) Any idea/hint is appreciated. -chris

• Synchronization between hibernate running locally and on a server

  Is there an easy way using a library to facilitate the synchronization of two hibernate instances. One running locally on a client and one running on a central server exposed via a web service. So Client tracks changes it makes, pushes them to the Server. The server ensures that the clients is not updating out of sync objects and stores the clients changes. The Client can also sync with the Server so that it can see the changes made by other clients. The idea is that the client can be run offline, without access to the server and only come online to synchronize when needed.

• How to get unique URL identifier after inserting item in Google Base with Zend Gdata API?

  I need to get the unique URL identifier for the product that is created after inserting an item into Google Base using the Zend_Gdata_Gbase library. I can't seem to do this. I am finding a startling lack of documentation online about manipulating the objects used in these applications. The url that I add to the object does not work to retrieve the base item later, which is why I need to get the one that google generates upon submission. I am writing a program that will need to be able to delete content at a later date, and thus will need to store that information in order to keep the website synced with the Google Base feed. • JQuery/JavaScript div tag "containment" approach/algorithm?

  Background: I've created an online circuit design application where div tags are containers that contain smaller div containers and so forth. Question: For any particular div tag I need to quickly identify if it contains other div tags (that may in turn contain other div tags). I've searched JQuery and I don't see any built-in routine for this. Does anyone know of an algorithm that's quicker than O(n^2)? Seems like I have to walk the list of div tags in an outer loop (n) and have an inner loop (another n) to compare against all other div tags and do a "containment test" (position, width, height), building a list of contained div tags. That's n-squared. Then I have to build a list of all nested div tags by concatenating contained lists. So the total would be O(n^2)+n. There must be a better way?

This is using mysql as DB. I have images on it. I am using Nitobi grid for displaying set of records on page. The rest is everything normal page controls.   What is Google map's spatial reference system using when you enter a lat, long into the maps search bar? I've found hints that it might be WGS84 but after converting to that coordinate system, nothing shows up when i paste the coordinates into the google maps search box. I am converting from GDA MGA 56. • Interacting with java code from C#

  We've written a Java program which we are looking to use and interact with from C#. What are our options? Optimally it would be possible to compile the Java application as a library (.DLL) that we could reference from C# perhaps using P/Invoke. This, however, doesn't appear to be an option according to the first few searches online. • Wanting to edit a google maps info bubble

  I have to edit an info bubble on a website to help someone out. The site is already online and i dont have the ftp login details so i cant download the files and use them locally to test it. So im having some issues with inserting a logo on the top of the bubble, like a header. Im also having problems with the code needed to add 'to here' and 'from here' directions at the bottom of the bubble. Everything else is plain text in the middle of these 2 objects, so thats easy.   i was looking for some namespace extention to extend using c# (.net) but didn't find much help online except Galaxy Filesystem tooklkit. which are vc++ based but comes with c# and java wrapper classes... which helps me alot to start and i did. i have extended that enough now and made installer to install. it get installed successfully but don't know why, when i open it, system get stuck... :( i thought my modified version might have some problem so i tried to run Galaxy filesystem toolkit's author original version and it responded in same way as mine do :D :( now feeling bit helpless as even author is not responding my queries regarding my queries for some reason... any help would be really appreciated.... FYI: i need to have Gmail drive like stuff...
