• Which steps are required to avoid my server being considered as spam sender?

  I'm looking to set up a webmail server that will be used by a lots of users that will receive and send emails. They will also have the possibility to forward emails they receive. I'd like to know which steps are recommanded/required to indicate to others Mail services (GMail, Outlook, etc) that my server is not used as a spam sender (disclaimer : IT's NOT ! :p) but a legitimate one. I know I have to define a SPF TXT records for example, but what others steps would you recommend me to do ? For example, is there a formula like having a proportional number of servers based on the amount of email sent (for having a different IP address) ? (something like sending a maximum of 1M emails / per IP / per day ?) Something else I'm missing ? I tried to search online, but I mostly find how to avoid emails sent with scripts (like PHP) being put in the SPAM folder. I'm looking for a server/dns configuration side. • Jailkit not locking down SFTP, working for SSH

  I installed jailkit on my CentOS 5.8 server, and configured it according to the online guides that I found. These are the commands that were executed as root: mkdir /var/jail jk_init -j /var/jail extshellplusnet jk_init -j /var/jail sftp adduser testuser; passwd testuser jk_jailuser -j /var/jail testuser I then edited /var/jail/etc/passwd to change the login shell for testuser to be /bin/bash to give them access to a full bash shell via SSH. Next I edited /var/jail/etc/jailkit/jk_lsh.ini to look like the following (not sure if this is correct) [testuser] paths= /usr/bin, /usr/lib/ executables= /usr/bin/scp, /usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server, /usr/bin/sftp The testuser is able to connect via SSH and is limited to only view the chroot jail directory, and is also able to log in via SFTP, however the entire file system is visible and can be traversed. • VMWare vSphere 5: 4 pNICs for iSCSI vs. 2 pNICs

  New SAN for me, never used before: it's an IBM DS3512, dual controller with a quad 1GbE NIC per controller that a client bought and needs help setting up. Hosts (x2) have 8 pNICs and while I usually reserve 2 pNICs for iSCSI per host (and 2 for VM, 2 for management, 2 for vMotion, staggered across adapters), these extra ports on the SAN have me wondering if storage I/O would be significantly improved with 2 additional NICs per host, or if the limitations of the vmkernel/initiator would prevent the additional multipaths from ever being realized. I'm not seeing alot of 4 pNIC iSCSI implementations per host; 2 is the de facto standard from what I've read/seen online. I could and probably will do some I/O testing, but just wondering if there's a "wall" that someone else has discovered long ago (i.e. before 10GbE) that makes a 4 NIC iSCSI per host setup somewhat pointless. Just to clarify: I'm not looking for a how-to, but an explanation (link to paper, VMWare recommendation, benchmark, etc.) as to why 2-NIC configurations are the norm vs. 4-NIC iSCSI configurations. i.e. storage vendor limitations, VMKernel/initiator limitations, etc.

• How intrusive is using VPN?

  My company lets us work from home sometimes using VPN (during weather emergencies and stuff). When logging in a big window comes up that says the network is private and for employees only and that there's no right to privacy while using VPN. It makes sense that they don't want people poking around their network but I wonder if the company can use the connection to look around my computer while I'm connected. I'm not entirely computer-illiterate but I'm not a networks person at all so the technical documents I've found don't help me. Is that possible, and if so to what degree? UPDATE Thanks Mark. The funneling thing is what I was really asking about. Mostly I was worried that I would already have some IM conversation open or log into eBay forgetting that the VPN was open and that my company IT people would see it or that they would log my eBay password. Thanks again. ANOTHER UPDATE What if my son wants to play online poker or Warcraft etcetera while I have VPN on to work? Can my company think I'm the one playing if I am not typing often?

• Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem conected to 2WIREi38HG wireless router but there's no internet access

  I have just switched to Comcast cable internet from AT&T Uverse and I was hoping to use the 2WIRE wireless router with the new Surfboard modem so I can have wireless access. I messed around with some settings and got it working for my laptop (I'm not terribly well versed in computer stuff; I think it was mostly luck) for about a week. The other day I tried to get online and there was no internet connection. I restarted the equipment with no success and then plugged the modem directly into the laptop. This worked, so I knew there was no outage. I connected the ethernet cord to the router and a second cord to my laptop and that worked, too. But when I tried again just with the wireless the laptop connects to the router, but doesn't recognize it or find an internet connection. I tried to go to http://gateway.2Wire.net to fiddle with the settings, but all I get is a Server Not Found page. I tried to check the ip address but this is really kind of over my head and I get different things checking it while plugged into only the modem vs when I plug into the router. Can anyone help? The frustrating thing is that I had it working for awhile, so I know it can do it!

  Hi I was wondering what in your opinion is the "best" method for having "everything" backed-up in the following situation. We are a SMEs with 10 computers in total. Three of those computers are MACs The rest are windows (1 vista, 4 win7 and 2 XPs) I'm very open to what the method should be but you should also consider the follwing: Very limited resources Quite "small" bandwidth (4 MBs for all (download) 0.4 MBs (upload, yep, thats it)- though this might get, a little bit better) One of the main thing to back up would be the mails, considerations: All windows computers use outlook, mainly 2003 There is one mac that uses outlook too (for mac of course - not 2011 yet) We also have to backup the files: Not a huge amount Very few very big files Very organizes (by machine) What I would like is to hear your opinions as to which would be the best method (or combination of methods - preferably one of course) considering. We are not sure what do we need and I'm open to suggestions, though an online (cloud based applications) would be great, remember the the bandwidth is unbearable. Last think to consider, it that we would like to do weekly updates (unless the method is very easy of course). Thanks in advance!! I tried to be as specific as possible, but if anything is needed I'll gladly update, please ask for any clarification needed! • ATI Radeon 5670 Won't Show Resolutions over 1400x900

  Just got my new Dell computer with Windows 7 and an ATI Radeon 5670. I attached it to my current monitor, which is a Samsung 24" (2443bwt). Windows 7 does not allow me to display in resolutions greater than 1400 x 900. The setup through a VGA cable into the VGA port of the card. The card also has a DVI port, but I need to use the VGA port because a KVM that supports VGA only. My old PC (which is Windows XP, GeForce 8600 video) can display in 1900 x 1200 on the same monitor (which is what I want) and even higher. It does this through a vga cable also connected to the KVM (through the DVI port but using an adapter). I have tried the same setup (DVI = VGA adapter) on the new PC and nothing changed. I have tried: Updating the drivers via Windows "Update Driver" (says they are current) Installing the updated version of the drivers from ATI (made no difference) Installing Powerstrip (all the options I would need for a custom resolution are greyed out) Installing the drivers/software from ATI caused the ATI Catalyst Control Center software to stop functioning, so I can no longer even start it. I have found some references to other people having this problem and instructions on cleaning the software off and reinstalling it (as uninstalling normally doesn't solve it). I will try this tonight. In any case, I didn't see any options in CCC that would allow me to override the settings for max resolution. However I didn't tinker with it too much before I tried updating the drivers, so I may have missed a setting. I contacted Samsung via online chat and they say it's a problem with the video card/driver (of course--what else would they say?). Any thoughts on what else I could try?

• windows 2008 r2 iis worker proccess memory usage increase

  I have this web site written in c#. around 400-500 users online at any time. it was on windows 2008 32 bit machine before and never ever locked/slowed down due to increased memory consumption up until i upgraded it's server to win 2008 r2 64 bit. Old server had only 4 gig ram and quad core cpu at 2ghz. site was working just fine. since i've upgraded the server i noticed (2 times with in 10 days) it started to eat ram. last night it went up to 4 gb ram. with ram increase response slows down quite a lot. recycling app pool doesn't help. I have to restart it's worker process to recover. i've noticed this usually happens if there are continuous errors. as i didn't change anything in the code am i safe to assume it is not related to memory leak in the code? did anyone came across something like that? same thing happens if i create continuous errors with classic asp. thanks

• "Document in ADF" on Canon MX340

  I have a Canon MX340 multifunction printer. Recently, it keeps saying "Document in ADF" when I turn on the printer. I've tried clearing this multiple times, but as soon as the feeder wheels stop turning, in an attempt to clear the document feeder, it just pops up the same error again. This is particularly annoying, as it blocks all functions on the device - I cannot print, even though printing has no interaction with the document feeder. I've opened up the feeder device, as much as can be done with fingers alone. There just doesn't seem to be anything in there. I ran a sheet of paper through about six times, just to see if some dust might be getting in the way, and I've blown out the feeder with air. Still nothing. At this point, I don't care too much about the ADF working, I just want to disable whatever sensor is tripping this error message. Any ideas? I found this thread online, where a user has the same problem. But no resolution was reached there.

  When a server gets rooted (e.g. a situation like this), one of the first things that you may decide to do is containment. Some security specialists advise not to enter remediation immediately and to keep the server online until forensics are completed. Those advises are usually for APT. It's different if you have occasional Script kiddie breaches. However, you may decide to remediate (fix things) early and one of the steps in remediation is containment of the server. Quoting from Robert Moir's Answer - "disconnect the victim from its muggers". A server can be contained by pulling the network cable or the power cable. Which method is better? Taking into consideration the need for: Protecting victims from further damage Executing successful forensics (Possibly) Protecting valuable data on the server Edit: 5 assumptions Assuming: You detected early: 24 hours. You want to recover early: 3 days of 1 systems admin on the job (forensics and recovery). The server is not a Virtual Machine or a Container able to take a snapshot capturing the contents of the servers memory. You decide not to attempt prosecuting. You suspect that the attacker may be using some form of software (possibly sophisticated) and this software is still running on the server.

• Windows 7 x64 support for Intel GMA 3650 (or GMA 3600)

  I recently purchased an Intel D2700 MUD motherboard and I cannot find drivers for the Win7 x64 integrated graphics (Intel GMA 3650 aka PowerVR sgs545). The accompanying CD contains Win7 x32 version only. When I run it I got an error: This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. I tried to use online utility Intel Driver Update Utility Graphics. I used Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer without success. First, UAC prompt appear, and then endlessly spinning progress-bar with text "Analyzing computer...". The text in UAC prompt is: Program file name: System Requirements Lab Verified publisher: Husdawg, LLC I downloaded this utility (intel_srldetect_4.5.5.0) and started it from my hard disk. I got an error: A network error occured while attempting to read from the file: C:\Users\Loom\Downloads\SystemRequirementsLab_intel_4.5.5.0.msi Standard VGA driver works for this video card but without hardware acceleration: Hardware acceleration is either disabled or not supported by your video card driver, which could slow game performance. Make sure you have the latest video card driver installed and that hardware acceleration is turned on. Where I can get appropriate driver?

• Outlook 2010 Crashing Unpredictably

  Very often when I open up Outlook 2010 and start doing actions in it, it will hang and become non responsive. I have tried letting it finish, but it never does come back (up to 20 minutes of letting it try). I generally have to restart Outlook and try again. Usually after about an hour of doing this, Outlook somehow snaps out of it and works for the rest of the day. It's generally in the morning (though I doubt that's the key variable). Generally, the emails that cause problems are HTML/formatted, but not always. What I've done so far to troubleshoot: Install Latest Outlook Hotfix (I think Dec 14, 2010) Start Outlook in Safe Mode Neither of those steps seem to make a difference. Usually - after about 10-15 restarts of Outlook on any given day, then it starts working thereafter. My next step is to uninstall/reinstall Office 2010, but I'm hoping someone has seen this and knows what to do about it - though not sure. My configuration is like this: Microsoft Online Services (using Microsoft's Sign In App) - Connecting to Exchange I have two other Exchange accounts in this profile (new feature in 2010) connected through Outlook Anywhere. Life Meeting Conferencing Add In I've disabled the People tab/add in. I've disabled the "Send to Bluetooth" add-in. Not sure what else to do?

• Active Directory server down, recovering without reinstalling

  My Windows 2003 server suddenly ceased to function as a DC (this server is the only DC of the domain). All AD related services are down. The only way I can login to the AD is physically to the machine. Everytime I access an AD-related service (e.g. "AD users and computers") I get the below error: Naming information cannot be located because: The specified directory service attribute or value does not exist. Contact your system administrator to verify that your domain is properly configured and is currently online. I found the below system event which matches the time when the issue started, this re-occurs everytime I reboot the server. NTDS General | Global Catalog | Active Directory was unable to establish a connection with the global catalog. Additional Data Error value: 1355 The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Internal ID: 3200d33 I started the troubleshooting with DNS. Netdiag throws the below error although I think this is simply a consequence of not being able to access the Global Catalog. The procedure entry point DnsGetPrimaryDomainName_UTF8 could not be located in the dynamic link library DNSAPI.dll. Anyway DNS seems OK because I can ping the DC FQDN from the DC itself. I found the below solution which is supposed to help by doing some cleanup of the metadata: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498 If I follow procedure 1 here is what I get at step 9: no current site Domain - DC=<mydomain>,DC=<com> no current server no current naming context I can continue the procedure until step 14. I haven't tested step 15 as my understanding is that I will have to reinstall the whole AD again. Is there any way I can recover my AD from there without having to reinstall the whole thing? Update: Yes, the server was powered off/on because reboot would take forever (not because I thought power cycling the unit would fix it more than a reboot).

• How can one restrict network activity to only the VPN on a Mac and prevent unsecured internet activity?

  I'm using Mac OS and connect to a VPN to hide my location and IP (I have the 'send all traffic over VPN connection' box checked in teh Network system pref), I wish to remain anonymous and do not wish to reveal my actual IP, hence the VPN. I have a prefpan called pearportVPN that automatically connects me to my VPN when I get online. The problem is, when I connect to the internet using Airport (or other means) I have a few seconds of unsecured internet connection before my Mac logs onto my VPN. Therefore its only a matter of time before I inadvertently expose my real IP address in the few seconds it takes between when I connect to the internet and when I log onto my VPN. Is there any way I can block any traffic to and from my Mac that does not go through my VPN, so that nothing can connect unless I'm logged onto my VPN? I suspect I would need to find a third party app that would block all traffic except through the Server Address, perhaps Intego Virus Barrier X6 or little snitch, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which is right or how to configure them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

• Is it possible to create a simple frontend indexer for openbittorent torrents?

  I run a website which distributes a few files every now and again, live music performances by a rock band. I create a torrent file, set the trackers as openbittorrent, publicbt and other similar open trackers. I upload the torrent file to my forum, my users download it and the files are shared. No problems there. What I would like to do is index those torrents properly on my website though so I can follow seeders/leechers and other stats online. I know the open torrent trackers don't have an index but I am aware of many, many indexing sites that do that exact thing. I don't know how though. So what I'm asking is what do I need to do to do that myself? I simply want to create a page that lists the torrents I and other users on my site create, the seeders/leechers ratio and a link to the torrent file etc. What data do I need to be able to do that? I'm proficient in general web design but I don't know what I would need data wise to pull the required info on the torrents? Thanks

• apache chokes after 300 connections

  We have an apache webserver in front of Tomcat hosted on EC2, instance type is extra large with 34GB memory. Our application deals with lot of external webservices and we have a very lousy external webservice which takes almost 300 seconds to respond to requests during peak hours. During peak hours the server chokes at just about 300 httpd processes. ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l =300 I have googled and found numerous suggestions but nothing seems to work.. following are some configuration i have done which are directly taken from online resources. • Dedicated Mouse and Keyboard on Virtual Box VM

  To all super users, Currently I am trying to run virtual box on my second monitor, with a dedicated mouse and keyboard. However, doing so has not proven easy. There has been times where the mouse works, but not the keyboard, vice versa, or nothing works at all. The biggest problem I am running into is this: When enabling the USB mouse and keyboard from the VM, I get an error: 'USB Device is busy with a previous request.' The only thing that is using second mouse and keyboard, however, is Windows. The other error I have received stated that the VM was unable to create a proxy for the device. Additionally, the VM occasionally will disable the secondary keyboard entirely, requiring me to unplug and replug it into my PC to re-enable it again. Keyboard auto-capture is disabled, and while a solution I was reading online stated to turn off mouse integration, that option is grayed out on my machine. Any help would be appreciated. • InstallShield or Windows installer corrupted

  Just recently I've been unable to install any software on my Windows 7 machine. Anything that uses InstallShield or the Windows installer will just hang or give a weird error. I noticed there will be many duplicate isbew64.exe processes (like 25) that launch and then just sit there or else a lot of msiexec.exe *32 processes, depending on what I'm trying to install. One piece of software specifically is the Logitech Harmony software. It gives me an *is_string_not_defined* error, saying c:\program files (x86)\:\ the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. The other thing I was trying to install was Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and that just hangs as well, and then just leaves all the Windows installer processes running in the background after I quit the install process. Very odd. I've checked well and googled these issues, it doesn't appear to be any sort of malware issue. I feel like it's related to some kind of corrupted installer application. I've rebooted, deleted the InstallShield folder in program files/common files as some places online suggested but to no avail. I have no idea what to do, any ideas?

• Laptop seemingly randomly "freezes" to the point of no longer executing applications

  After upgrading to Windows 8 pro on my Samsung Series 7 Chronos NP700Z5C-S04US (may be relevant, I'm not sure), my computer began to stop allowing the execution of any service or application, as well as discontinuing the update of the clock until a hard shutdown was performed. This seems to occur randomly after periods of inactivity and I've no idea the cause. These are measures I have already taken in order to attempt to stop this: -Obviously Googling potential answers to this problem -Updating all drivers -Researching all events that have occurred around the time of the failure to respond (with no results) -I tried applying "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick no" which was a hotfix for what seemed to be the same error but was not. Here is some more, potentially related, information about the error: -No BSOD (actually, I haven't at all experienced a BSOD with Windows 8) -Computer seems to have a problem shutting down/restarting most of the time (Hangs at the point where it should completely turn off) -New sound instances are not able to play, but previously loaded containers function properly -As mentioned before, the clock freezes at the time of the error -USB devices function properly -Servers that I was running fail to respond on my end, but stay online. • How do I disable tablet gestures in windows 8?

  I'm using a Wacom Intuos4 and I have recently upgraded to Windows 8. I don't have a problem when using Photoshop however I occasionally draw on flash based online boards. The problem is, when I drag the pen in a direction repetitively (which is basically all I do when drawing) it's detected as a gesture, sometimes causing Chrome to go to the previous page (left drag) and making me lose the entire thing. Is there a way to disable these "gestures"? I believe this is not something caused by Windows 8 (or Charms) because I run Windows in English although it's not the initial language that Windows was installed in. I changed to English long after the installation. When Windows takes a move as a gesture, a small text pops up next to the cursor informing me about what I have just done and those pop ups are not even in English. I'm sorry for failing to be any more specific here but these gestures could be a feature of either Windows (unlikely), the tablet, Chrome or the computer itself. It's an Acer Aspire and it has one of those little stickers on it that specifies some of the features and one of them reads "Multi-Gesture" (referring to the touchpad, I guess). Could it be that this Multi-Gesture feature somehow decided to expand and apply for my tablet as well? If so, how do I disable it?

• 3dmark score abnormal

  I just bought a new laptop. It is core i7 3610QM.(Ivy bridge, 4 core plus hyperthreading), 8G ram, nvidia GT 610M 2GB. The OS is Win7 64bit. I ran 3dmark 11, but the score is frustrating. For 1280*720, the score is P730. It is too low right? I searched online, the score should at least above 1000. Am I right? I never use this software before. I know nvidia has optimus, so I made the laptop in high performance state and white-listed the 3dmark program. But there is no help. I am guessing 3dmark is using i7's graphic module. It cannot transform to nvidia. In the running detail of 3dmark, the graphic card cannot be identified(The row remain blank). Can anybody tell me is this the normal case? If not, can I use some other software to test if my nvidia card is working fine? If this nvidia card cannot work, I will return the new laptop asap. Thanks.

• How to make Windows command prompt treat single quote as though it is a double quote?

  My scenario is simple - I am copying script samples from the Mercurial online book (at http://hGBook.red-bean.com) and pasting them in a Windows command prompt. The problem is that the samples in the book use single quoted strings. When a single quoted string is passed on the Windows command prompt, the latter does not recognize that everything between the single quotes belongs to one string. For example, the following command: hg commit -m 'Initial commit' cannot be pasted as is in a command prompt, because the latter treats 'Initial commit' as two strings - 'Initial and commit'. I have to edit the command after paste and it is annoying. Is it possible to instruct the Windows command prompt to treat single quotes similarly to the double one? EDIT Following the reply by JdeBP I have done a little research. Here is the summary: Mercurial entry point looks like so (it is a python program): def run(): "run the command in sys.argv" sys.exit(dispatch(request(sys.argv[1:]))) So, I have created a tiny python program to mimic the command line processing used by mercurial: import sys print sys.argv[1:] Here is the Unix console log: [hg@Quake ~]$ python 1.py "1 2 3" ['1 2 3'] [hg@Quake ~]$ python 1.py '1 2 3' ['1 2 3'] [hg@Quake ~]$ python 1.py 1 2 3 ['1', '2', '3'] [hg@Quake ~]$ And here is the respective Windows console log: C:\Workpython 1.py "1 2 3" ['1 2 3'] C:\Workpython 1.py '1 2 3' ["'1", '2', "3'"] C:\Workpython 1.py 1 2 3 ['1', '2', '3'] C:\Work One can clearly see that Windows does not treat single quotes as double quotes. • OpenVZ container is running but does not show in vzlist nor can I find the private/conf files for the container

  I was creating a new OpenVZ container on one of our VPS Nodes while the power went out for that machine. After bringing the machine back online I could no longer access the container CTID=101. I could not destroy it using "vzctl destroy 101", I can not enter or control it, and "vzlist -a" does NOT display any containers at all (this was a fresh node and the first container was being created). I decided to create a new container at this point assuming that the old container just was not saved for some reason. However when I go to add the ip/host to the new container I get a warning that the IP is already in use. After doing a ping to the IP I realized there was a machine on that IP. I SSH into the machine and discover it is the OLD container that some how is orphaned. I can not find it on the filesystem, I can not find it using VZ commands, and It is set to start on Node boot so it is impossible to shutdown (even ssh in and typing the "shutdown now" command just reboots the container not shut it down). Is this a flaw in OpenVZ or am I missing something? I have all the outputs and logs if needed. Thank you all so much in advance.
