  • Cisco Unifies Communications Manager 7.0 - Installing Extension Mobility

    I've setup extension mobility to the best of my ability, however, it its perplexing me... From the materials I've been reading I have established I need to have the following URL in place: http://IP/emapp/EmAppServlet?device=#DEVICENAME# If I try and browse to this in a web browser I can a blankHTML page. When my registered phone (CIPC) presses Services - Extension Mobility, it just sits there / delivers a blank page. I figure this isn't coincidence... Any ideas?

  • Someone tried to hack my Node.js server, need to understand a GET request in the logs

    Alright, so I left my Node.js server alone for a while and came back to find some really interesting stuff in the logs. Apparently some moron from China or Poland tried to hack my server using directory traversal and what not, while it seems though he did not succeed I am unable understand few entries in the log. This is the output of a "hohup.out" file. The attack starts, apparently he is trying to find out some console entry in my server. All of which fail and return a 404. How did the hacker even manage to send a GET request to my server such that "http://www.google.com" shows up in the log while my server is simply an API that works on relative URLs such as "/api/login". And, while I looked up the OPTIONS, TRACE and PROPFIND HTTP requests that my server has logged it would be great if someone could explain what exactly was the hacker trying to achieve by using these verbs? Also what in the world does "[90m [32m [90m1ms - 240b[0m" mean? The "ms" makes sense, probably milliseconds for the request, rest I am unable to understand. Thank you!

  • Proper way to configure ~/.Xsession with a standalone window manager to gracefully end a session

    I'm using xdm and my ~/.Xsession looks like this: # <initialization stuff here> exec openbox It works, but I've noticed that when I log out Openbox doesn't gracefully kill all the applications. In particular Google Chrome complains about that. How can I make sure to wait for all processes to exit (just like others configurations: Gnome, KDE, Windows ...)? The only (ugly) solution that I've found involves sleep and kill into ~/.Xsession.

  • Custom metadata fields in Windows file manager (or other software)

    I'm trying to organize a collection of maybe 500 or so journal articles, stored in a combination of .pdf and .djvu formats. I'd like to be able to sort the collection by author(s), title, journal name, year, and subject keywords. Is there a way to create metadata fields for this information in the Windows file system (similar to how .mp3 files come with tags for album, title, track length, etc)? Or, if not, is there some software (preferably free) that can do something similar?

    I'm looking for an online task list tool, what I absolutely need is the infinite number of subtask levels, because that's how my mind works. I don't need collaboration. There are a lot of great to do list sites out there, but for some reason most of them have only one subtask level or no subtasks at all. I know about todoist, but its interface doesn't work for me. There must be many more, I guess. Links to desktop tools with the feature are also appreciated as long as they are cross-platform.

We have built a Web portal-based collaboration platform that we would like to host on five different Windows- and Linux-based servers in different hosting environments that run Web servers. Each of these Windows and Linux servers have a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Out team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? (3) Can these JavaScript modules be made portable and re-usable object modules for different environments and instances? The portal is written in JavaScript that is embedded in HTML5 and padded with CSS3. Other technologies include Flash, Flex. Databases used are PostgreSQL and MySQL.

  • How to manage enterprise network of Linux machines?

    I work at the university. In my institute we have six computer laboratories used for teaching. Each lab has almost 20 computers, which gives over 100 machines total. Computers have either Windows XP or Windows 7 Eneterprise operating system. We use Symantec Ghost to manage all the computers. Each computer has a Ghost client installed, which allows to control computers over network. Every six months we restore a master image on one of the computers in a lab, update that image and distribute it over the network to all computers in a laboratory. Thanks to Ghost client this is done automatically with just a few clicks. Recently I suggested that it would be good to have Linux installed in the laboratories. The administrators were concerned that we would not be able to manage that many computers if each would have to be updated manually. The question is: how to manage such a huge network of Linux machines in an automated way? To make the description of our network more complete I'll add that all students have their accounts (about few thousand users) on a central server. These are accessed via LDAP. To use a computer in laboratory each student has to log in using his own account.

    Here’s a quick post on how to create both master and work repositories in one simple dialog, its using the groovy capabilities in ODI 11g and the groovy swing builder components. So if you want more/less take the groovy script and change, its easy stuff. The groovy script odi_create_repos.groovy is here, just open it in ODI before connecting and you will be able to create both master and work repositories with ease – or check the groovy out and script your own automation – you can construct the master, work and runtime repositories, so if you are embedding ODI as your DI engine this may be very useful. When you click ‘Create Repository’ you will see the following in the log as the master repository starts to be created; ====================================================== Repository Creation Started.... ====================================================== Master Repository Creation Started.... Then the completion message followed by the work repository creation and final completion message. Master Repository Creation Completed. Work Repository Creation Started.   • The Retail Week Conference 2012 - Interview with Paul Dickson

    Recently we attended the Retail Week Conference at the Hilton London Metropole Hotel in London. The conference proves to be an inspirational meeting of retail minds and the insight gained from both the speakers and the other delegates is invaluable. In particular we enjoyed hearing from Charlie Mayfield, Chairman at John Lewis Partnership, about understanding how the consumer is viewing the ever changing world of retail; a session on how to encourage brand-loyal multichannel activities from Robin Terrell of House of Fraser with Alan White of the N Brown Group, Vince Russell from The Cloud and Lucy Neville-Rolfe from Tesco; and a fascinating session from Tim Steiner, Chief Executive of Ocado, about how the business makes it as easy as possible for consumers to shop on their various platforms, which included some surprising usage statistics. Oracle's own Vice President of Retail, Paul Dickson, also held a session with Richard Pennycook, Group Finance Director at Morrisons, about the role of technology in accelerating and supporting the business strategy. Morrisons' 'Evolve' programme takes a litte-and-often approach to updating its technology infrastructure to spread cost and keep the adoption process gentle for staff, and the session explored how the process works and how Oracle's technology underpins the programme to optimise their operations using actionable insight.   • 3 Key Trends For Mobile Commerce – Location, Location, Location

    This past weekend I was at a major bookstore chain and looking for a particular book.  Rather than ask the clerk, I went to my smartphone and went online to find the book title, author, and competing price.  I know I’m not alone in this effort and more and more individuals (and businesses) will use the power of mobility to tilt the scale in their favor. Armed with a mobile device – smartphone or tablet – folks will use them to research, compare, and ultimately purchase.  A recent PayPal survey found that 46% of respondents plan to use a mobile device this holiday season to make a purchase.   An astounding 27% of consumers in an e-tailing group survey commissioned by Oracle, use a tablet device daily or several times a week to research products and services. Beyond researching or making purchases, 35% of consumers use their smartphone to receive offers and coupons, and 32% access coupons and redeem them at their local retail store.  And with GPS capabilities in smartphones and tablet (and with user’s approval), retailers will start pushing coupons and offers directly to phone users based on their proximity to their store (or their competitors).   • 3 Key Trends For Mobile Commerce – Location, Location, Location

    This past weekend I was at a major bookstore chain and looking for a particular book.  Rather than ask the clerk, I went to my smartphone and went online to find the book title, author, and competing price.  I know I’m not alone in this effort and more and more individuals (and businesses) will use the power of mobility to tilt the scale in their favor. Armed with a mobile device – smartphone or tablet – folks will use them to research, compare, and ultimately purchase.  A recent PayPal survey found that 46% of respondents plan to use a mobile device this holiday season to make a purchase.   An astounding 27% of consumers in an e-tailing group survey commissioned by Oracle, use a tablet device daily or several times a week to research products and services. Beyond researching or making purchases, 35% of consumers use their smartphone to receive offers and coupons, and 32% access coupons and redeem them at their local retail store.  And with GPS capabilities in smartphones and tablet (and with user’s approval), retailers will start pushing coupons and offers directly to phone users based on their proximity to their store (or their competitors).   • Big Data for Retail

    Right up there with mobile, social, and cloud is the term "big data," which seems to be popping up lots in the press these days.  Companies like Google, Yahoo, and Facebook have popularized a new class of data technologies meant to solve the problem of processing large amounts of data quickly.  I first mentioned this in a posting back in March 2009.  Put simply, big data implies datasets so large they can't normally be processed using a standard transactional database.  The term "noSQL" is often used in this context as well. Actually, using parallel processing within the Oracle database combined with Exadata can achieve impressive results.  Look for more from Oracle at OpenWorld as hinted by Jean-Pierre Dijcks. McKinsey recently released a report on big data in which retail was specifically mentioned as an industry that can benefit from the new technologies.  I won't rehash that report because my friend Rama already did such a good job in his posting, Impact of "Big Data" on Retail. The presentation below does a pretty good job of framing the problem, although it doesn't really get into the available technologies (e.g. Exadata, Hadoop, Cassandra, etc.) and isn't retail specific. Determine the Right Analytic Database: A Survey of New Data Technologies So when a retailer asks me about big data, here's what I say:  Big data refers to a set of technologies for processing large volumes of structured and unstructured data.  Imagine collecting everything uttered by your customers on Facebook and Twitter and combining it with all the data you can find about the products you sell (e.g. reviews, images, demonstration videos), including competitive data.  Assuming you could process all that data, you could then personalize offers to specific customers based on their tastes, ensure prices are competitive, and implement better local assortments.  It's really not that far off.

Simmermon joined Subaru of America in 2005 as Chief Information Officer. Simmermon then performed a company-wide technology assessment and determined that the business ran a large collection of applications, many of which duplicated functionality.   • JavaOne Latin America Underway

    JavaOne Latin America started officially today, but lots of networking has already happened. Last night some JUG leaders, Java Champions, and members of the Oracle Java development and marketing teams had dinner together. The conversation ranged from the new direction of JavaFX to how to improve JUG attendance. Maricio Leal shared the idea some Brazilian JUGs have of putting Java Evangelists and experts on a boat and having them visit JUGs on cities along the Amazon river.  We discussed ideas, and shared dessert pizza. It was the perfect community get together! If you see Brazilian Java Man Bruno Souza, ask him what he is bringing to the party.Today, at JavaOne Latin America, all the sessions were full, and developers were spilling into the hallways. Session content was selected with the help of 14 Java thought leaders from Latin America. JavaOne Program Committee Chair, Sharat Chander, said "I'm thrilled that at this JavaOne over half of the content is coming from the community." Between sessions, developers take advantage of the Oracle Technology Network lounge to grab a snack and use their laptops.  OTN LoungeIt promises to be a great JavaOne.

    Hi Frank, today is your last day at Oracle. I cannot belief that retirement is an alternative to designing software and improving products for decades. I might figure it out myself in a couple of years. Our ways have crossed several times. And I am extremely thankful for that. I still remember my first session on an Apple Lisa. It must have been around 1985. I was still in school, and we were visiting the University of Hamburg to get some orientation on the departments. When I started I chose Informatics. And I suppose the Apple Lisa played a significant role in my decision. Is it fate that I later wrote about Apple Lisa? I’ve attended your presentation and public demo of the Lisa System at CHI ’98 in Los Angeles. Maybe a video still exists. I should look it up and publish it somewhere. You had also booth duty for Sun Microsystems – presenting HotJava Views, a user interface for a network computer. And you were handing out VHS tapes (!) of Starfire. I still have mine – but no player anymore. Then I joined Sun in 2002, and I guess I popped up in your office each time when I came to Santa Clara. The SEED mentoring program finally made it possible that we exchanged and discussed many ideas on the past and future of HCI. Dueling Interaction Models of Personal-Computing and Web-Computing at MEDICI 2007 is one of the results. But do you remember for instance also our jam session with Phil Clevenger on Hello World? Marvelous! I will miss you at Oracle. Enjoy your life and let’s stay in touch.Matthias

    The newest OPN Competency Center (OPN CC) enhancements are now available. This release is focused on a new look and simplified navigation, and Resell Competency Tracking functionality. Some of the key features released include: 1. New Look and Feel with Simplified Navigation Users are now one click away from the most valuable resources. Additionally, there are now focused areas which allow users to navigate more effectively. Users can review their individual achievements, create a dedicated Training Plan to broaden their knowledge, or use the new Company Corner to view their company’s achievements. Your view as an Oracle employee has been modified and the Company Corner will provide links to allow access to Partner Workgroups and other links specific to your partner data. 2. Resell Competency Tracker This new functionality has been created to allow partners to track their progress toward becoming Resell Authorized. The Resell Competency Tracker highlights those Knowledge Zones where additional requirements must be achieved prior to Distribution Rights being granted and allows the partners to track their progress. This tracker is available to all users badged to a company ID and also to Internal Oracle employees who have existing access to Partner Workgroups. 3.
