Able to ping but cannot browse after several hours running of my python program

It's a GUI program I wrote in python checking website/server status running on my XP SP3, multi threads are used to check different site/server. After several hours running, the program starts to get urlopen error timed out all the time, and this always happens right after a POST request from a server(not a certain one, might be A or B or C), and it's also not the first POST request causing the problem, normally after several hours running and it happens to make a POST request at an unknown moment, all you get from then on is urlopen error timed out. I'm still able to ping but cannot browse any site, once the program closed everything's fine. It's definitely the program causing this problem, well I just don't know how to debug/check what the problem is, also don't know if it's from OS side or my program wasting too many resources/connections(are you still able to ping when too many connections used?), would anybody please help me out?

Concatenating text in an ASP.NET localized label

Trying to localize text in ASP.NET labels... want to add a ':' after the localized text. I could just add the ':' to the localized text in the resource file, but that seems silly... there should be an easy way to do this. <asp:Label id="RoleTypeLabel" runat="server" Text='<%$ Resources: GS3, RoleTypeLabel %>:' AssociatedControlID="RoleTypeDropDown"></asp:Label> (note the ':' at the end of Text='...') Of course, this doesn't work... and neither does anything I can think of to concatenate a ':' onto the end of the localized text. Anyone know how to do it? TIA, James

Migrating Ruby Site from EngineYard to Heroku

As part of a larger project I've been tasked with migrating some existing Ruby on Rails sites (built with an old version of refinerycms 0.9.6.34, at least that's the version listed in the Gemfile included with the source). I don't normally work with Ruby so I'm at a bit of a loss. The previous developers simply handed over the latest git dump as well as a db dump. I'm working first with trying to get the site up working locally on an Ubuntu 11.10 local machine before pushing up to at test Heroku install. If it's possible to just push directly to Heroku with the files they gave, then I can try that, but it's my understanding I need to get everything working and then use Heroku's tools to deploy. The previous devs said they're using ruby 1.8.7 so in Ubuntu I've done the following: aptitude install ruby1.8 ruby1.8-dev ruby1.8-full aptitude install rubygems1.8 I've restored the database and in the config directory I've made changes to the database.yml to point to the restored database. How to configure encoding in maven

When I run maven install on my multi module maven project I always get the following output: [WARNING] File encoding has not been set, using platform encoding UTF-8, i.e. build is platform dependent! So, I googled around a bit, but all I can find is that I have to add <properties> <project.build.sourceEncoding>UTF-8</project.build.sourceEncoding> </properties> to my pom.xml. But it's already there (in the parent pom.xml). Configuring <encoding> for the maven-resources-plugin or the maven-compiler-plugin also doesn't fix it. So what's the problem?

What web browser engine, version, and capabilities are used to display web pages inside Visual Studio 2010?

My company is developing a plugin/add-on for Visual Studio 2010. When the user asks to display the help for our product, we plan on opening an HTML page (or suite of pages) within Visual Studio. I'm helping to design and implement the help system. What web engine/version is used within Visual Studio 2010? According to Wikipedia it is not Trident(!). Am I allowed to load remote JavaScript content (via a <script> element)? Am I allowed to use XHR to load remote content? Will my page be trusted and have access to the FileSystemObject? I would appreciate any resources you can give me on programming specifically to the 'web' capabilities of VisualStudio2010-as-a-browser.

I want to use a graph database using php. Can you point out some resources on where to get started? Is there any example code / tutorial out there? Or are there any other methods of storing data that relate to each other in totally random/abstract situations? Very abstract example of the relations needed: John relates to Mary, both relate to School, John is Tall, Mary is Short, John has Blue Eyes, Mary has Green Eyes, query I want is which people are related to 'Short people that have Green Eyes and go to School' - answer John It is possible in MySQL but it would require a fixed set of attributes/columns for each item and a complex non-flexible query, instead I need every attribute to be an item by itself and instead of 'belonging' to something, to be 'related' to something.

How (and where) to get aligned tRNA sequences (and import it into R)

(This is a database / R commands question) I wish (for my thesis work), to import tRNA data into R and have it aligned. My questions are: 1) What resources can I use for the data. 2) What commands might help me with the import/alignment. Can IIS admin change password of Windows Service account

We have a service account defined for anonymous access which is used for several web sites hosted on the web server. This account has access to several network resources like report server, file servers and so on. While deploying a new web site, we used the same service account for anonymous access. IIS takes the username/password for the account and then a dialog opens for confirm password. Accidently, we gave a wrong password in both the text boxes, the new site with wrong password is working fine but all other previously hosted sites which were using the service account, started giving the unautorized access error. Is it possible that when we entered wrong password for the new web site, the password of the account got reset and all sites stopped functioning?

Good implementations of reinforced learning?

For an ai-class project I need to implement a reinforcement learning algorithm which beats a simple game of tetris. The game is written in Java and we have the source code. I know the basics of reinforcement learning theory but was wondering if anyone in the SO community had hands on experience with this type of thing. What would your recommended readings be for an implementation of reinforced learning in a tetris game? Are there any good open source projects that accomplish similar things that would be worth checking out? Targetting DataTemplate for only on certain views

I have a DataTemplate inside a global/shared ResourceDictionary like this which targets a DataType: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type foo:Bar}">  </DataTemplate> This DataTemplate replaces my all foo:Bar types on all my Views (UserControls/Windows). What I want to do is to apply this template to only certain views, keeping the other views are not affected by this DataTemplate. I can copy this DataTemplate to Resources sections of each of these view, but I don't want to copy/paste the contents of the DataTemplate which would result in maintenance headaches.

Archiving an Entire Rails Site

I have a Ruby on Rails site that was only needed for a short period of time during which users added various objects to a mySQL database, commenting on them, associating themselves with them, etc. etc. etc. The question is this: the site is no longer needed until a week next year around this time when I will clear the database and use it again (starting from scratch). What's the best way to archive the current site so that the existing content is still viewable but no new content can be added? By best way, I mean the method by which the least system resources will be used, the server will be the safest, etc. Any suggestions?

Functional Programming - Lots of emphasis on recursion, why?

I am getting introduced to Functional Programming [FP] (using Scala). One thing that is coming out from my initial learnings is that FPs rely heavily on recursion. And also it seems like, in pure FPs the only way to do iterative stuff is by writing recursive functions. And because of the heavy usage of recursion seems the next thing that FPs had to worry about were StackoverflowExceptions typically due to long winding recursive calls. This was tackled by introducing some optimizations (tail recursion related optimizations in maintenance of stackframes and @tailrec annotation from Scala v2.8 onwards) Can someone please enlighten me why recursion is so important to functional programming paradigm? Is there something in the specifications of functional programming languages which gets "violated" if we do stuff iteratively? If yes, then I am keen to know that as well. PS: Note that I am newbie to functional programming so feel free to point me to existing resources if they explain/answer my question. Also I do understand that Scala in particular provides support for doing iterative stuff as well.

How to Use Grizzly Embedded Server for Mule as Well as Jersey

I'm currently using JerseyTest w/ Grizzly embedded server to test some code. I do some very simple configuration to point it to the proper resources: Map<String, String> initParams = new HashMap<String, String>(); initParams.put("com.sun.jersey.config.property.packages", "com.sample.service"); ApplicationDescriptor appDescriptor = new ApplicationDescriptor(); appDescriptor.setServletInitParams(initParams); super.setupTestEnvironment(appDescriptor); This works fine and the Jersey components are available and working as expected. I'm now trying to add some Mule functionality to some of these Jersey calls, but Mule is not being properly initialized/configured by Grizzly. Has anyone gotten this kind of setup running? What additional configuration do I need to do with JerseyTest/GrizzlyWebServer to get it to initialize Mule properly?

In my web application VS 2008 solution, I have the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory and a whole set of language directories for it (ar, cs, de,es, fr, he, etc...) I don't remember how the language directories got in there. If I am using other languages via the ACT, do I need these directories? If not, then I don't? When I do a rebuild solution, the dll (AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll) in these directories disappear. If I need them, what do I need to do to keep them from being deleted during a rebuild?

A colleague of mine made an assertion that "your employer owns all patents that you file while an employee". Is this accurate? For example: Suppose I'm an employee of company xyz where I make widgets of type "w". In my spare time I make widgets of type "t" as a hobby. I do not use any resources from company xyz at all for my hobby. Also the widget types are completely different. For example w could be lawn mower wheels and t could be sliding door frames (so I'm not using any skills learned from my employment at company xyz when making widgets of type t). If I were to file and receive a patent for widgets of type t would company xyz have any rights/ownership to this at all?

Admin interface in Rails

I have an admin controller located in controllers/admin/admin_controller.rb I also have a pages controller located in controllers/admin/pages_controller.rb pages_controller.rb inherits from admin_controller.rb in routes.rb, I have an admin namespace as such: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :pages end I want the admin have basic CRUD functionality in pages_controller.rb (I know how to do that) I want the index and show methods to be available to front-end users I would like the show and index actions to use separate views, but the same code. Questions: Should I create a new pages_controller for the front-end, or share the methods index and show? If share, how would I display separate views depending on whether the url is /admin/pages or /pages If share, should I place pages_controller in /controllers/admin (where it is now) or just in /controllers? Integrating Fedex and UPS into Rails Apps

I'm working on integrating a shipping solution into a Rails ecommerce app. We're only going to use one shipping provider. So the question is: Fedex or UPS? I'm wondering what Rails developers think about the tech side of this question. What do you think about the APIs, ease of integration, focus on developer's needs between Fedex and UPS? I was leaning towards Fedex, but from looking at the developers resources sections of both sites, it seems that UPS might be more developer friendly. Also, I'm going to be using Shopify's active_shipping gem: http://github.com/Shopify/active_shipping And I also based my app off the Spree Ecommerce solution, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the question. Spree wrote a wrapper to integrate active_shipping with the Spree system. I gave away all my points, so SO wont' let me post another link in this question. My app has some basic problems, and it stops working

I am writing a basic application which contains two activities. Both contain a TextView showing the title and the first one contains an EditText in which the user types a message and clicks on a button on its side, the second activity is launched which shows the message the user types. It has the following problems: The title (the first TextView in both the activities) doesn't show in the middle of the line, despite of the android:gravity="center_horizontal" attribute. The EditText in the first activity does not show at all. When I click on the button, the app stops saying "Unfortunately Write n Display and stopped.", rather than launching the second activity at all. I don't have adequate knowledge about logcat, but I have followed the steps somebody had told me, that is WindowOpen Perspective Other DDMS Then run the app and select the package name from the Devices and click on log cat, select the exception(s) and export to text file. What is the release date for Rakudo Star (perl6)?

If a specific release date is not available (as I suspect it is not), can you provide resources for tracking how close it is to the desired feature set that allows release. I'm not necessarily asking for a percentage gauge, or X of Y features completed list. A list of bugs marked in whichever section of the perl RT instance that's tracking Rakudo bugs would meet my criteria, even more so if the list is dynamic (I.e. it's a list of bugs tagged in some manner, not a static list of ticket numbers). If there are only a few planned features left to be finished/tested before it's considered ready for final testing, listing those would also be sufficient.

TabWidget Activity Handling - Does it Create a New Activity EVERY Time?

When a TabWidget is using intents to designate the target Activity for each tab, is there any special handling of those Activities on the Activity Stack outside of the default operation? For Instance, if my app has tabs A, B, and C, and I click them in this order––A, B, A, C, A, B––how will the Activity stack change? My understanding of the default operation, if startActivity() is called each time on the intent, would have the Stack keep loading up new instances of the activities: A, AB, ABA, ABAC, ABACA, ABACAB It's hard to believe that's how it works though... Seems like it would be a waste of resources and could be endless. Can anyone tell me how this will actually work?

Looking for Light Time Management Software Suggestions (for Mac)

I'm looking for a simple project management app that performs task scheduling, along the line of Merlin or MS Project, but no where near as robustly. I don't need to deal with other (human) resources, but I work on anything from 3 to 6 different projects at a time. What I'd like is to be able to input deadlines and tasks, and have a schedule suggested to complete them. I do technical work, but I don't think I need anything specifically for software development, especially considering I do plenty of other kinds of things, like graphic design and social media PR. I'd really like this to be dead simple, as simple as possible. Suggestions? OmniPlan, something web-based? Definitely cannot afford anything too extravagant, really looking for something under $200. Java - copy Jar Folder

Hey Java - Developers Actually I am confronted with a Problem. I've got a ".apk-File" in one Package of my Application. apk is a kind of a jar File (apk = Android Package). I now want to copy this jar-file out of my Programm onto any other Location at the PC. Normally I would do this by using: FileInputStream is = new FileInputStream(this.getClass().getResource("/resources/myApp.apk").getFile()); And then write it on the disk with using a FileOutputStream. ... but since an .apk is a kind of a .jar it doesn't work. It just copies the .apk file. but without the containing other files. any help would be appreciated

DAO, Spring and Hibernate

Correct me if anything is wrong. Now when we use Spring DAO for ORM templates, when we use @Transactional attribute, we do not have control over the transaction and/or session when the method is called externally, not within the method. Lazy loading saves resources - less queries to the db, less memory to keep all the collections fetched in the app memory. So, if lazy=false, then everything is fetched, all associated collections, that is not effectively, if there are 10,000 records in a linked set. Now, I have a method in a DAO class that is supposed to return me a User object. It has collections that represent linked tables of the database. I need to get a object by id and then query its collections. Hibernate "failed to lazily initialize a collection" exception occurs when I try to access the linked collection that this DAO method returns. Explain please, what is a workaround here?

How do I flip a column in mysql that has data structured: 'last name, first name'?

I want to create a new column in a MYSQL table that has Fn Ln instead of Ln, Fn. Most of my data is printed Fn Ln. Another idea is to incorporate a string function each time there is an output (php based) but that seems to waste resources. Finally, I couldn't find the syntax (loop or foreach) for my php function anyway.
