  • Rails how to return a list of answers with a specific question_id

    Let's say I have two Models, Answers and Questions (there are others, but irrelevant to the question). The models are as follows: Answer.rb class Answer < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :description, :question_id has_one :question, :through => :user, :dependent => :destroy validates :description, :presence => true end Question.rb class Question < ActiveRecord::Base attr_accessible :budget, :description, :headline, :user_id, :updated_at, :created_at belongs_to :user has_many :answers validates :headline, :description, :user_id, :presence => true end I'd like to display on a page a list of all answers associated with a question, and only those questions. I got this far. I believe this variable finds all the questions in the database by the question_id (foreign key): @findanswers = Answer.all(params[:question_id]) And this one grabs the the id of the current question (this code will reside as an ERB on the page where the current question is located): @questionshow = Question.find(params[:id]) And now I'm stuck. How do I put the two together so that I list all the answers with the current question id?

  • Can you recommend wiki, forum, blog & cms plugins for an existing Rails app or should I go the route

    Hello. I have an existing Rails internal app, that handles inventory, invoicing, order taking, labeling, data imports/exports, etc, etc. Now I need to add blog, cms, forum and wiki functionality to it. It seems silly to try to roll out my own solutions when there are already some out there. So I was wondering if people could recommend based on their experience: Are there good plugins out there? (Which ones you had experience with?) Would you rather recommend to go the route of engines, and integrate RadiantCMS or similar apps? (please provide recommendations based on your integration experience) Or would you just bite the bullet and roll out your own? Thank you. P.S.: Right now the app is Rails 2.3, but it will get upgraded to Rail 3 in a year, when most gems/plugins that it depends on will be Rails 3 compatible.

  • How to set a predefined value in a form in Rails

    So I just got started in Rails, and I'm trying to create an Object (a book_loan in my case) with a Form. The thing is that I get to this form by clicking on a book, so I pass the book_id as a parameter, like localhost:3000/loans/new?id=1. Now I don't want the user to be able to set the book id field in the form, since I already know the id. So my question is how to set the value in the form. I have been trying things like: <% form_for(@loan) do |f| %> <%= f.error_messages %> ... <%= @loan.book_id = params[:id] %> <%= f.submit 'Create' %> <% end %> without any success. Does anybody have a hint for me?

    I have a view with a div that is looped many times. Each of the created divs need to have a unique ID so I can access them specifically (at the moment, all my divs have the same ID specified in html so whenever I try to access a specific div it just finds the first one). This is the version that I currently have (multiple 'rowBox'es are not discernible). <% @customers.each do |customer| %> <div id="customer" class="rowBox"> ... </div> <% end %> I would like to be able to do something like: <% @customers.each do |customer| %> <div id="box<%=customer.id%>"> ... </div> <% end %> This doesn't seem to work. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

    Hi, I trying to display a large set of checkboxes in my rails app and didnt knwo the syntax for displaying like 15 rows then after starting a new column. I have a model with about 120 entries. Currently, I have it being displayed in the view as.... <% for interest in Interest.find(:all) %> <%= check_box_tag Blah Blah Blah %> <%= interest.name %> <% end %> How can I make it so it makes a table and after every 15 or so rows make a new column???

    I have an aggregated attribute which I want to be able ask about its _changed? ness, etc. composed_of :range, :class_name => 'Range', :mapping => [ %w(range_begin begin), %w(range_end end)], :allow_nil => true If I use the aggregation: foo.range = 1..10 This is what I get: foo.range # => 1..10 foo.range_changed? # NoMethodError foo.range_was # ditto foo.changed # ['range_begin', 'range_end'] So basically, I'm not getting ActiveRecord::Dirty semanitcs on aggregated attributes. Is there any way to do that? I'm not having a lot of luck with alias_attribute_with_dirty, etc.

  • Saving an ActiveRecord non-transactionally.

    My application accepts file uploads, with some metadata being stored in the DB, and the file itself on the file system. I am trying to make the metadata visible in the application before the file upload and post-processing are finished, but because saves are transactional, I have had no success. I have tried the callbacks and calling create_or_update() instead of save(), all to no avail. Is there a way to do this without re-writing the guts of ActiveRecord::Base? I've even attempted naming the method make() instead of save(), but perplexingly that had no effect. The code below "works" fine, but the database is not modified until everything else is finished. def save(upload) uploadFile = upload['datafile'] originalName = uploadFile.original_filename self.fileType = File.extname(originalName) create_or_update() # write the file File.open(self.filePath, "wb") { |f| f.write(uploadFile.read) } begin musicFile = TagLib::File.new(self.filePath()) self.id3Title = musicFile.title self.id3Artist = musicFile.artist self.id3Length = musicFile.length rescue TagLib::BadFile => exc logger.error("Failed to id track: \n #{exc}") end if(self.fileType == '.mp3') convertToOGG(); end create_or_update() end Any ideas would be quite welcome, thanks.

    I am trying to test my views with RSpec. The particular view that is causing me troubles changes its appearance depending on a url parameter: link_to "sort>name", model_path(:sort_by => 'name') which results in http://mydomain/model?sort_by=name My view then uses this parameter like that: <% if params[:sort_by] == 'name' %> <div>Sorted by Name</div> <% end %> The RSpec looks like this: it "should tell the user the attribute for sorting order" do #Problem: assign params[:sort_for] = 'name' render "/groups/index.html.erb" response.should have_tag("div", "Sorted by Name") end I would like to test my view (without controller) in RSpec but I can't get this parameter into my params variable. I tried assign in all different flavours: assign[:params] = {:sort_by => 'name'} assign[:params][:sort_by] = 'name' ... no success so far. Every idea is appreciated.

    I am working on an existing Rails 2.3.x application, So I was working on it and it was a messy code with great difficulty I was able to run the application. But now for every small change in one of my controller it is expecting me to restart my serer otherwise the changes are not reflecting back, Let's take an example scenario here, Let's just say in one of the before_filter method I just added a puts statement on top of the method and it was not printing in the log, after I restart the server it is printing, Can some one please let me know if I am missing something here.

Is there a better way to do this?

  • Can you call compiled JRuby classes from java?

    So I came up with the general idea to write some code in JRuby, then access all the classes via Java. I have no idea if this is at all possible but I wanted to ask anyway. Lets say I have some JRuby code: class adder def addme return 22 end end If I compiled this with jrubyc is there any way I could then possibly do something like this in java: import adder; class anything { void testMethod() { adder a = new adder(); int x = a.addme(); } } After looking at it now it sort of makes me think that Java will have zero idea what sort of item test addme is going to return so that might not work. I don't know but I wanted to throw it out there anyway. Thanks

Relationship as follows: has_many :album_photos, :dependent => :destroy i upload photos to S3 When the user delete album I want to delete all photos as the relationship shows but it takes time if the user has many photos. Can I automatically set photo deletion to happen in the background (delayed_job) without having to manually call 'send_later' on every photo?
