• How can I modify the application file of an application that is currently running (on Linux)?

  I have an application running called AppFS. This application has an ext2 filesystem just attached to the end of the file (it's positioned so that the application binary exists in a 1MB spacing area, followed by the ext2 data). Now I've got FUSE embedded in the program and I've managed to extract the filesystem out of the application data into a temporary file so that FUSE can mount / use it. The problem I have now is writing the temporary file back into the application file. I get "Text file busy" presumably because the application has locked itself and won't let writes occur. Is there a way I can force the file to become unlocked so I can write data to it? (It's important to note that I'm not changing the application binary area - just rewriting the ext2 component.) It needs to be unlocked without requiring root permissions (unlocked by the same user who started the application).

• C or C++: how do loaders/wrappers work?

  Here's an example of what I mean... User runs LOADER.EXE program LOADER.EXE downloads another EXE but keeps it all in memory without saving it to disk Runs the downloaded EXE just as it would if it were executed from disk, but does it straight from memory I've seen a few applications like this, and I've never seen an example or an explanation of how it works. Does anyone know? Another example is having an encrypted EXE embedded in another one. It gets extracted and decrypted in memory, without ever being saved to disk before it gets executed. I've seen that one used in some applications to prevent piracy.

• QuickTime movie disappearing from Javascript when scrolled offscreen in Firefox?

  I have a web page I'm creating that uses Javascript to control an embedded QuickTime player. I add the QuickTime movie to the page using the AC_QuickTime.js file from Apple (as described here - http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/QuickTime/Conceptual/QTScripting_HTML/QTScripting_HTML_Document/ScriptingHTML.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001525-2-SW1 ). Everything seems to be working fine - I can call methods on the QuickTime movie and control its playback (as well as get the current timestamp). The problem is that in Firefox, when I scroll down such that the QuickTime player is no longer visible, I get the following error every time I try to call a method on the QuickTime movie: Error calling method on NPObject! This does not occur in Safari. Why is this happening, and is there any way to work around this?

• Is it possible to embed C code in a C# project?

  I know that it's possible to compile my C code into a dll, and then use P/Invoke to call that code. What I wondered if it was possible to have a chunk of C code embedded directly in my code, perhaps only available to one class... Something like this (non-working) example: public class MyClass { extern "C" { int do_something_in_c(int i) { return i*2; } } public int DoSomething(int value) { return do_something_in_c(value); } } I've been trying for a few hours using Visual Studio 2008, but I'm not getting anywhere, and I suspect that it isn't actually possible. • Iframe contents not accessible from a page in different domain

  Need some help from javascript gurus. I have one page where http://www.google.com/finance/converter is embedded inside IFrame. I am able to get the event notification whenever Google Finance page loads. Now problem is this that contents of this page is not accessible through javascript. It seems to be some security issue (firebug notified). Is there any workaround so that I can access values (result and select boxes) using javascript? • How to define an array inside a function in C?

  So in my source file I have the folowin function: void update(state* old_state, state* measurement, uint32_t size) { state new_state[size]; //some function using measurement and old_state and returning the result in newstate arm_fadd_32(measurement,old_state,newstate,size); // rest of the code } Now the compiler throws an error saying that error#28:expression must have a constant value. I think it's due to the fact that even though inside the method the size local variable is not changing the compiler is expecting a constant while defining the size. I have tried the following: int const a = size; and then tried to reinitialize it says constant value is not known. I did some research in internet and it appears that there is no easier way without using malloc, which I don't want to since I am using the code for some embedded application. Is there a way to avoid this problem without really using malloc? Thanks in advance guys!

  Hi, I'm trying to figure out how to use mod_rewrite so that I can replace linked images (coming in externally) and use local ones instead. Why am I doing this? I have a plugin which I'm integrating into my site, which uses ugly external images as buttons, and I want to redo these buttons to match my site. The links come in externally and are not embedded in a plugin php somewhere, so I figure there might be some way of using mod_rewrite to intercept and replace the incoming links. I hope someone can help, thanks!

Is it actually a normal application that just draws stuff, and starts after the kernel boot? And how does it draw it? Using OpenGL or is there something more generic?   Hi, Sorry I can't find a question answering this, I'm almost certain someone else has raised it before. My problem is that I'm writing some system libraries to run embedded devices. I have commands which can be sent to these devices over radio broadcasts. This can only be done by text. inside the system libraries I have a thread which handles the commands which looks like this if (value.equals("A") { doCommandA() } else if (value.equals"B") { doCommandB() } else if etc. The problem is that there are a lot of commands to it will quickly spiral to something out of control. Horrible to look out, painful to debug and mind boggling to understand in a few months time.

  Client is requesting a single track to be heard across the website. Generally I advise against it, but they insist. So, what is the most straightforward way of having a flash player embedded in a site, and when a user goes to another page there isn't a gap/interruption? I am thinking an iframe is required.. I am using a flash player that has autoresume, but that only solves picking up where you last left off on the song before going to another page. I tried searching SO for an answer..

  Turns out that WebView Control in WinRT is much more limited than it’s counterpart in WPF/Silverlight. There are some great articles out there in how to extend the control in order for it to support navigation events and some other features. For a personal project I'm working on, I needed to grab cookies a Web Site generated for the user. Basically, after a user authenticated to a Web Site I needed to get the authentication cookies and generate some extra requests on her behalf. In order to do so, I’ve found this great article about a similar case using SharePoint and Azure ACS. • Resolve a URL from a Partial View (ASP.NET MVC)

  Working on an ASP.NET MVC application and needed the ability to resolve a URL from a partial view. For example, I have an image I want to display, but I need to resolve the virtual path (say, ~/Content/Images/New.png) into a relative path that the browser can use, such as ../../Content/Images/New.png or /MyAppName/Content/Images/New.png. Astandard view derives from the System.Web.UI.Page class, meaning you have access to the ResolveUrl and ResolveClientUrl methods. Consequently, you can write markup/code like the following:' /The problem is that the above code does not work as expected in a partial view. What's a little confusing is that while the above code compiles and the page, when visited through a browser, renders, the call to Page.ResolveClientUrl returns precisely what you pass in, ~/Content/Images/New.png, in this instance. The browser doesn't know what to do with ~, it presumes it's part of the URL, so it sends the request to the server for the image with the ~ in the URL, which results in a broken image.I did a bit of searching online and found this handy tip from Stephen Walther - Using ResolveUrl in an HTML Helper. In a nutshell, Stephen shows how to create an extension method for the HtmlHelper class that uses the UrlHelper class to resolve a URL. Specifically, Stephen shows how to add an Image extension method to HtmlHelper. I incorporated Stephen's code into my codebase and also created a more generic extension method, which I named ResolveUrl.public static MvcHtmlString ResolveUrl(this HtmlHelper htmlHelper, string url) { var urlHelper = new UrlHelper(htmlHelper.ViewContext.RequestContext); return MvcHtmlString.Create(urlHelper.Content(url)); }With this method in place you can resolve a URL in a partial view like so:' /Or you could use Stephen's Html.Image extension method (althoughmy more generic Html.ResolveUrl method could be used in non-image related scenarios where you needed to get a relative URL from a virtual one in a partial view).   When using RadScheduler for WinForms, it will almost always need to be customized in some way. This could come in the form of custom dialogs, context menus, or even custom appointments. The process of accomplishing this involves five simple steps. • Visual Basic 2010 Language Enhancements

  Earlier this month Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010, the .NET Framework 4.0 (which includes ASP.NET 4.0), and new versions of their core programming languages: C# 4.0 and Visual Basic 10 (also referred to as Visual Basic 2010). Previously, the C# and Visual Basic programming languages were managed by two separate teams within Microsoft, which helps explain why features found in one language was not necessarily found in the other. For example, C# 3.0 introduced collection initializers, which enable developers to define the contents of a collection when declaring it; however, Visual Basic 9 did not support collection initializers. Conversely, Visual Basic has long supported optional parameters in methods, whereas C# did not. Recently, Microsoft merged the Visual Basic and C# teams to help ensure that C# and Visual Basic grow together. As explained by Microsoft program manager Jonathan Aneja, "The intent is to make the languages advance together. When major functionality is introduced in one language, it should appear in the other as well. ... [T]hat any task you can do in one language should be as simple in the other." To this end, with version 4.0 C# now supports optional parameters and named arguments, two features that have long been part of Visual Basic's vernacular. Other areas are also covered including how collections utilize memory, how to use LINQ with collections, using threading with collections, serializing collections, and how to bind collections to controls in Windows Forms, WPF and Silverlight. For developers looking for a simple reference book on collections, then this book will serve that purpose and serve it well. For those looking for a great read from cover-to-cover, they may be disappointed. This book tends to be repetitive in discussion topics, examples, and code samples in the first two parts of the book. In the first part, the author conducts walk-throughs to develop custom collections. In  the second part, the author conducts walk-throughs on using the built-in .NET collections. For experienced .NET developers, the first two parts will not provide much value. However, it is beneficial for new developers who have not worked with the built-in collections in .NET. They will obtain an understanding of the mechanics of the built-in collections and how memory is utilized when using the various types of collections. So in this aspect, new developers will get more value out of this book. The third and fourth parts delve into advanced topics, including using LINQ, threading, serialization and data binding. I find these two parts of the book are well written and flow better than the first two parts. Both beginner and experienced developers will find value in this half of the book, mainly on the topics of threading and serialization. • Data Web Controls Enhancements in ASP.NET 4.0

  Traditionally, developers using Web controls enjoyed increased productivity but at the cost of control over the rendered markup. For instance, many ASP.NET controls automatically wrap their content in <table> for layout or styling purposes. This behavior runs counter to the web standards that have evolved over the past several years, which favor cleaner, terser HTML; sparing use of tables; and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for layout and styling. Furthermore, the <table> elements and other automatically-added content makes it harder to both style the Web controls using CSS and to work with the controls from client-side script. One of the aims of ASP.NET version 4.0 is to give Web Form developers greater control over the markup rendered by Web controls. Last week's article, Take Control Of Web Control ClientID Values in ASP.NET 4.0, highlighted how new properties in ASP.NET 4.0 give the developer more say over how a Web control's ID property is translated into a client-side id attribute. In addition to these ClientID-related properties, many Web controls in ASP.NET 4.0 include properties that allow the page developer to instruct the control to not emit extraneous markup, or to use an HTML element other than <table>.
