• Code Contracts and Pex at MSDN Live 2010

  One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex.  Both fantastic tools ! They can be used togethers, but are also completely independent from each other, and can be used as a single Code Contracts  has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008).   Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/devlabs/dd491992.aspx . This download is a free download.   Code Contracts originates form the ideas of Bertrand Meyer – Design by Contract, take a look here. Pex is found on the MSDN Subscription download, so it requires an active MSDN Subscription. Start to get it from here http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx .  The current version as of 14.4.10 is 0.9, which works with the 2010 RC.  A new version is due this week.  Pex is a tool to generate unit tests, and does this very intelligently.  Perfect to make tests for legacy code, but also to make sure you get all paths tested.  See the Reference information and project startup information.

• Free ADF Training Event in the UK

  At the UKOUG conference back in December, at the Tools Roundtable session someone told me that they hadn't chosen Oracle ADF as their development environement for their future projects.  When I asked why, the response I got was "no one told us about it".  I was pretty astounded (even gobsmacked!) that the technology that is the foundation of Oracle's future applications strategy wasn't on someone's radar. There and then I promised the audience that if the UKOUG was to fill a room, I would deliver a full day of free training on Oracle ADF and JDeveloper. • How to install Oracle Database 11g Express Edition on Ubuntu 12.10?

  I installed the Oracle database following the steps mentioned in this blog. Downloaded 11g express edition Created a new user oracle under the group dba. Following steps are executed using this. Unzipped oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip and then converted the rpm to the Ubuntu package by running: sudo alien --scripts -d oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm Created /sbin/chkconfig file and added the entries as specified there. Created /etc/sysctl.d/60-oracle.conf and added the entries as specified in the same link as above. Running the commands: ln -s /usr/bin/awk /bin/awk mkdir /var/lock/subsys touch /var/lock/subsys/listener .deb generated in step 3: sudo dpkg --install oracle-xe_11.2.0-2_amd64.deb Left the default values as it is: sudo /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure Set the following env variables in ~/.bashrc file: export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/xe export ORACLE_SID=XE export NLS_LANG=`$ORACLE_HOME/bin/nls_lang.sh` export ORACLE_BASE=/u01/app/oracle export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH Running the commands: chown -R oracle:dba /var/tmp/.oracle chmod -R 755 /var/tmp/.oracle chown -R oracle:dba /tmp/.oracle chmod -R 755 /tmp/.oracle Starting Oracle Database 11g Express Edition instance: sudo service oracle-xe start sqlplus / as sysdba and got the following: SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Thu Jan 3 09:41:58 2013 Copyright (c) 1982, 2011, Oracle. • ASP.NET MVC WebService - Security for Industrial Android Clients

  I'm trying to design a system that will allow a bunch of Android devices to securely log into an ASP.NET MVC REST Web service. At present neither side are implemented. However there is an ASP.NET MVC website which the web service will site along side. This is currently using forms authentication. The idea will be that the Android devices will download data from the web service and then be able to work offline storing data in their own local databases, where users will be able to make updates to that data, and then syncing updates back to the main server where possible. The web service will be using HTTPS to prevent calls being intercepted and reduce the risk of calls being intercepted. The system is an industrial system and will not be in used by the general Android population. Instead only authorized Android devices will be authorized by the Web Service to make calls. As such I was thinking of using the Android devices serial number as a username and then a generated long password which the device will be able to pick up - once the device has been authorized server side. The device will also have user logins - but these will not be to log into the web service - just the device itself - since the device and user must be able to work offline. So usernames and passwords will be downloaded and stored on the devices themselves. My question is... what form of security is best setup on the web service? Should it use forms Authentication? Should the username and password just be passed in with each GET/POST call or should it start a session as I have with the website? The Android side causes more confusion. There seems to be a number of options here Spring-Android, Volley, Retrofit, LoopJ, Robo Spice which seems to use the aforementioned Spring, Retrofit or Google HttpClient. I'm struggling to find a simple example which authenticates with a forms based authentication system. Is this because I'm going about this wrong? Is there another option that would better suite this?

• WebSocket@QCon NY

  QCon NY was held on June 10-14 at the New York Marriott/Brooklyn Bridge. Part of the QCon franchise, this is one of the most significant IT conferences in the greater NYC area. It was an honor to do a WebSocket (JSR 356) talk at the conference. Unfortunately, my schedule was such that I could only attend one day of the conference and did not really get a chance to attend many sessions or do much networking. I did get a chance to talk to fellow Oracle speakers Doug Clarke, Stephen Chin and Frederic Desbiens, which was great. My session, titled Building Java HTML5/WebSocket Applications with JSR 356 was very well attended and I had some excellent Q & A. The talk introduces HTML 5 WebSocket, overviews JSR 356, tours the API and ends with a small WebSocket demo on GlassFish 4. The slide deck for the talk is posted below. Oracle hosted a reception in the evening which was very well attended. • Memory concerns while plotting escape from DLL Hell in Delphi

  I work on a program with about 50 DLLs that are loaded from one executable, it's an old organically grown program where the only rationale for creating a new DLL is that one previously didn't exist to fill a given need. (and namespaces didn't exist in Delphi so it never crossed our mind to make dll1.main.pas, dll2.main.pas or something even more unique) What we want to do is consolidate all these DLLs into one executable, since none of them are used out of the program, there shouldn't be much of a problem. The concern my boss has is that if we did this, the memory overhead for terminal server clients would go through the roof. So, I've stepped through enough initialization code to know that lots of stuff is done every time a DLL is loaded in to memory, but say I've got a project with about 4000 files, and 50 dlls, 10 of which are probably utilized by any one user in any one session of the program. The 50 dlls are about 2/3rds form files, if not more, but beyond that there's not a lot of other resources being loaded (only a few embedded pictures, icons, cursors, etc..). If I loaded all these files in to memory, how much memory is used per unit? how much is used per class? How do I keep the overhead down? and what is the biggest project one can reasonably expect to build with Delphi? This tidbit won't help answering, but I think it might clarify what my boss is worried about, we currently start our program at about 18megs, normal working conditions are usually less than 40 megs, he thinks it could climb as high as 120 megs.

  As you may have heard, Oracle Database 12c is now available. In addition to the binaries and docs going out, we also published a few new Oracle By Example (OBE) chapters. You can find those links here on our product page. Do you know who found these, practically the minute they were published? An enterprising DBA-extraordinaire who was just happening to be presenting at the ODTUG KScope13 conference in New Orleans. He thought it would be a good idea to download the new software over a hotel WIFI, install and create a new multitenant database, watch a few OBEs, and then demo that live for his ‘SQL Developer for DBAs‘ session. • Startup/Shutdown time in Xubuntu is increasing!

  I am a novice Xubuntu user on a dual-boot machine. The other OS I have is Windows 7. When I first began using Xubuntu, I had really fast startup and shutdown (much much faster than Windows 7 :) ). However, as I started using it more and more for my work, these times started rising. I do not have any problems with execution speed of running applications. My main concern is the shutdown time. Now it has gone above Windows shutdown time [startup time has only partially increase compared to shutdown]. I checked some similar questions like this. However, they seem to not answer my concern as I feel that the concerned users there experience a long wait before the screen goes blue. In my case, the screen goes blue (desktop session ends a blue screen with a moving slider appears) pretty fast. However, it remains blue for a long time. Another answer that I saw on google was to use dmesg and then stopping some services that I do not want. However, me being a novice could not completely understand what it meant

• TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone. • how can I fix error: hd0 out of disk?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook - Acer AS 1410. After a download session, I restarted the computer and it said: error: hd0 out of disk. Press any key to continue... I pressed everything, but it's just frozen there. Any idea what's wrong with it and what I can do to fix it? I haven't been able to run my computer at all since it's frozen like that. Help please!   With gdm3, I was able to remove the last connected users from the list by removing the file '/var/log/ConsoleKit/history' With lightdm, the last users appears even when : removing /var/log/ConsoleKit/history removing /var/lib/lightdm/.cache/unity-greeter/state Where does lightdm store this list ? Edit: It seems like it's using the content from the last command. Then purging the content of the file /var/log/wtmp is sufficient to remove any previously connected user from the list : # > /var/log/wtmp But, after doing this, I have the unwanted side effect that users loging in via lightdm doesn't appears at all in this list. I must say that I'm in a enterprise network environment using NIS. Edit2: Well, it seems that lightdm uses wtmp to display recent network users list, but does not update it. • Intermittent temporary GUI freeze in Ubuntu 11.10

  I've been using Ubuntu 11.10 for a month or so. In the last week it's started freezing randomly (every few hours or minutes). I can still move the mouse and switch to other terminals with ctrl+alt. I thought this was purely a gui issue as I could continue entering commands (mouse clicks and keys) which seem to be processed once the system resumes (generally 30 seconds to a few minutes). I'm using gnome and metacity. I can't identify anything in particular that triggers the freezes. Saving a file in LibreOffice causes the system to hang. I tried disabling most of the services I've installed (dropbox, autokey, etc.) but doesn't help. Switching to another terminal and running top, the CPU column is shared equally among all of my processes (i.e. non-root). I have no idea what that signifies. My PC is unusable in this state. • How to revert back to older xorg?

  Since the last update of ubuntu 12.04, the system won't boot into gui anymore. It states that it was unable to load the graphics drivers and gives me 4 options, these are: run in low graphics mode for 1 session reconfigure graphics troubleshoot the error exit to console login whichever option I choose, it doesn't solve anything. For instance, when i choose to reconfigure graphics and then switch to vesa drivers, the screen goes back to the option list. So i configured xorg.conf to vesa myself, and i see in the update history that ubuntu updated xserver-xorg-core and xserver-common whereas i blocked these updates in synaptic since i'm aware that updating these files caused troubles with my particular video card (radeon hd6800). So my solution is probably to revert these files to the older (working) versions. Jake Sabulsky started off by explaining that you should be concentrating on the core functionality of your app and letting the framework take care of the features that users require these days.  This is implemented be leveraging contracts.  When Windows 8 was released it included the File, Share and Pickers contracts.  With the release of Windows 8.1 they have added the Contacts and Calendar contracts. There have been a number of improvements to the original contracts. The File URI contract will now automatically detect the size that a new windows should be opened and will also allow you to programmatically influence new window size.  The Share contract has been enhanced by allowing apps to always share screenshots and links to the app in the store. • TechEd 2012: A Little Cloud And Too Little Windows Phone

  It is Monday afternoon and the last couple of sessions have been disappointing.  I started out in the Nokia: Learning to Tile session.  I guess I should have read the summary more closely because it turned out to be more of a Nokia/WP7 history and sales pitch. “I’m outa here!” I made a quick venue change and now we are learning about Private Cloud Architecture.  The topic and the material were very informative.  The speaker even had a couple of quotable statements. The first quote was “You can trust me … I’m a doctor”.  The second was a new acronym (at least for me): CAVE – committee against virtually everything.  I am sure I have dealt with them more than once in my career. Unfortunately he didn’t just have a doctorate, the presentation was overdone like a medical journal.  While I didn’t enjoy the presentation, I am looking forward to getting my hands on the slides to review.
