• What is a resonable workflow for designing webapps?

  It has been a while since I have done any substantial web development and I'd like to take advantage of the latest practices but I'm struggling to visualize the workflow to incorporate everything. Here's what I'm looking to use: CakePHP framework jsmin (JavaScript Minify) SASS (Synctactically Awesome StyleSheets) Git CakePHP: Pretty self explanatory, make modifications and update the source. jsmin: When you modify a script, do you manually run jsmin to output the new minified code, or would it be better to run a pre-commit hook that automatically generates jsmin outputs of javascript files that have changed. Assume that I have no knowledge of implementing commit hooks. SASS: I really like what SASS has to offer but I'm also aware that SASS code isn't supported by browsers by default so, at some point, the SASS code needs to be transformed to normal CSS. At what point in the workflow is this done. Git I'm terrified to admit it but, the last time I did any substantial web development, I didn't use SCM source control (IE, I did use source control but it consisted of a very detailed change log with backups). I have since had plenty of experience using Git (as well as mercurial and SVN) for desktop development but I'm wondering how to best implement it for web development). Is it common practice to implement a remote repository on the web host so I can push the changes directly to the production server, or is there some cross platform (windows/linux) tool that makes it easy to upload only changed files to the production server. Are there web hosting companies that make it eas to implement a remote repository, do I need SSH access, etc... I know how to accomplish this on my own testing server with a remote repository with a separate remote tracking branch already but I've never done it on a remote production web hosting server before so I'm not aware of the options yet. Extra: I was considering implementing a javascript framework where separate javascript files used on a page are compiled into a single file for each page on the production server to limit the number of file downloads needed per page. Does something like this already exist? Is there already an open source project out in the wild that implements something similar that I could use and contribute to? Considering how paranoid web devs are about performance (and the fact that the number of file requests on a website is a big hit to performance) I'm guessing that there is some wizard hacker on the net who has already addressed this issue.

• Unable to boot Ubuntu 13.10 (nVidia GTX 770m and Intel HD 4600)

  Ever since I bought this laptop I've been trying to install Ubuntu on it. It came with W8 preinstalled. Up to this point, I've been able to boot in UEFI mode with a black screen. I can tell it's trying to use the nVidia card (there's a led on the computer, depending on the color you can tell which GPU is using) and if I press crtl+alt+F1 I can go to console mode. Taking this advantage I tried to install bumblebee and after a successful install the led that indicates which GPU is being used change, indicating that it switched to the Intel HD 4600 graphics. After the installation I tried to initiate the graphic interface (startx) with no success. I also saved the dsmeg output to see if it can be of any help. In order to be able to get to this stage I had to boot with nomodeset option and removed quiet and splash. Anyone got this same error? Any guidance? I've tried other linux distros and so far the only one that is able to boot is Opensuse 12.3 without any issues (but only when I switch to legacy mode instead of UEFI).

• Connect Team Foundation Service/TFS 2012 with Visual Studio 2010 &amp; Visual Studio 2008

  Hello, Microsoft finally released the Team Foundation Service in late October 2012 after its long time in the preview phase. I was already using the TFS Preview which was free but I was happy to see Microsoft releasing the Team Foundation Service also FREE for upto 5 users. Isn't that great news? I know there are bunch of other free source control repositories (Github, Bitbucket, SVN etc.) out there but I somehow like TFS better. Also the other good thing about the final release was that I didn’t had to do any kind of migration of my code from preview to final release version. Just changed the TFS connection URL and it worked like a charm. Anyways, if you are a startup with small team and need some awesome Source Control along with all the good Project Management, Continuous Integration (Build, Test, Deploy), Team Collaboration, Agile/Scrum planning etc. features than Team Foundation Service is your answer. Microsoft has not yet released their pricing for more than 5 users and will be releasing it sometime in early 2013. What if as of now you have a team more than 5 users and you want to use Team Foundation Service, the good news is you can use it for FREE but when they release the final pricing, you will have to transition to the paid plan. Lot of story, getting to the point, connecting to Team Foundation Service with Visual Studio 2012 is straight forward and would work out of the box but it wont for previous versions of Visual Studio. You will have to upgrade to the latest service pack first and than install the forward compatibility pack. (1st : Service Packs & 2nd: Forward Compatibility packs) For Visual Studio 2010: Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2010 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 and Team Foundation Service.         For Visual Studio 2008: Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1. Visual Studio 2008 forward compatibility for TFS 2012 & Team Foundation Service. Restart your system. Visual Studio 2008 will not work if you only put https://xxx.visualstudio.com. You will have to put your collection name too as shown below.       By the way, it doesn’t matter if you are an Apple Application Developer or Android App Developer, you can still use Team Foundation Service as your source control. • Nvidia drivers don't work with mainline kernel

  I want to try some of the new features in the btrfs filesystem, and to do that I need to use a newer kernel than is included in Ubuntu 12.04. To do that, I have installed linux-headers-3.4.0-030400_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_all.deb, linux-headers-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_amd64.deb, and linux-image-3.4.0-030400-generic_3.4.0-030400.201205210521_amd64.deb from the mainline kernel download here. However, on rebooting into the 3.4 kernel, my desktop is stuck at a very low resolution and I cannot increase it to the full. This did happen when I first installed, but a simple install of the nvidia-current package got everything working nicely with my GTX570 card. • Shelving &ndash; What is it &ndash; and more importantly, can it help me?

  Since we shifted to TFS we’ve had the ability to perform what is known as ‘shelving’. Shelving (whilst not a wholly new topic in the world of SCC) is new to us, and didn’t exist in our previous SCC solution – SVN. Soo… what is it? What? Shelving is a way to check-in but not check-in your code. By shelving you submit a copy of your ‘pending changes’ to the SCC server, (which maintains a list of the shelvesets) and once that is done you can either continue working, or undo your changes, safe in the knowledge that a backup copy exists on the server. You can unshelve your code at any time and get back to the state you were when you shelved. Yer, that is great but why not just check it in?? Shelvesets don’t have to build. The shelveset you put in there could be entirely broken, or it might solve every bug in the system – shelves aren’t continuously integrated so you can shelve anything. Hmmmm… What else? Shelving allows us to do some pretty cool stuff that beforehand was quite frankly a pain. For instance – Gated Check-ins are implemented via the shelving mechanism, when code is checked-in, what you’re actually doing is shelving it, the Build Controller will build the shelveset with the original code and if it succeeds, the code will be committed, if it fails – well – it’s only you that has to fix the code :) Other nice features are things like the ability to share code you are working on… For example, if I was having trouble with a particular piece of code, I could shelve it, and then you (yes you) could then get that shelveset and check out the problem for yourself, and if you fix it?? Well – you could check-it in! Nice, but day-to-day shizzle? Let’s say you’ve been working on your project and your project manager comes over to you and says: “Hey, errr, bad times, there is an urgent bug we need you to fix, it needs to go out now!” (also for this to play out – we’ll need to assume you’re currently working in the 'release’ branch for another bug fix (maybe))… You could undo all your current changes (obviously you’ll probably backup your code using zip or something I imagine) fix the bug, then re-copy your backup over the top, or you could shelve and unshelve. Perhaps some other uses will awaken the shelver in you… :) Before each checkin – if you shelve, you no longer need to worry (if indeed you do) about resolving conflicts and mysteriously losing your code… Going home at night? Not checking in straight away? Why not shelve, this way – should the worst come to the worst and your local pc gives up, you can just get the shelveset onto another machine and be up and running in literally seconds minutes…

• Finding the groups of a user in WLS with OPSS

  How to find the group memberships for a user from a web application running in Weblogic server ?  This is useful for building up the profile of the user for security purposes for example. WLS as a container offers an identity store service which applications can access to query and manage identities known to the container.  This article for example shows how to recover the groups of the current user, but how can we find the same information for an arbitrary user ? It is the Oracle Platform for Securtiy Services (OPSS) that looks after the identity store in WLS and so it is in the OPSS APIs that we can find the way to recover this information. This is explained in the following documents.  Starting from the FMW 11.1.1.5 book list, with the Security Overview document we can see how WLS uses OPSS: Proceeding to the more detailed Application Security document, we find this list of useful references for security in FMW. We can follow on into the User/Role API javadoc. • Using Unity – Part 5

  In the previous article of the series, I talked about constructor and property (setter) injection. I wanted to write about how to work with arrays and generics in Unity in this blog, after seeing how lengthy this one got, I’ve decided to write about generics in the next one. This one will only concentrate on arrays. Furthermore, the Product4 has two constructor parameters – a string and an array of type ILogger. You might have observed the first parameter of the constructor is named ‘productName’ and that matches the value in the name attribute of the param element. The parameterType of ‘string’ maps to ‘System.String, mscorlib’ and is defined in the type alias above. The set up is similar for the second constructor parameter. The name matches the name of the parameter (loggers) and is of type ILoggerArray, which maps to an array of ILogger objects. We’ve also decided to add two elements to this array when unity resolves it – an instance of FileLogger and one of FakeLogger. The click event of the button does the following: 1: //unityContainer.RegisterType<IProduct, Product4>(); 2: //IProduct product4 = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>(); 3: IProduct product4 = unityContainer.Resolve<IProduct>("ArrayConstructor"); 4: productDetailsLabel.Text = product4.WriteProductDetails(); It’s worth mentioning here about the change in the format of resolving the IProduct to create an instance of Product4. You cannot use the regular way (the commented lines) to get an instance of Product4. The reason is due to the behavior of Unity which Alex Ermakov has brilliantly explained here. The corresponding output of the action is: You have a couple of options when it comes to adding dependency elements in the array node. You can: - leave it empty (no dependency elements declared): This will only create an empty array of loggers. This way you can check for non-null condition, in your mock classes. - add multiple dependency elements with the same name 1: <param name="loggers" parameterType="ILoggerArray"> 2: <array> 3: <dependency name="logger2" /> 4: <dependency name="logger2" /> 5: </array> 6: </param> With this you’ll see two instances of FakeLogger in the output. • Visual Studio 2010/2012 Context Menus and a Keyboard

  As a software developer, I spend a lot of time using Visual Studio. I have to say that I completely satisfied with Visual Studio generally. Nevertheless, sometimes Visual Studio starts annoying me. One issue which poisoned my existence for a long time is that context menu behavior in VS2010 is a little different than it was in VS2005/2008. Unfortunately, in VS2012 this behavior remains the same as in VS2010. So, what is the issue? Working with Visual Studio, I use the keyboard in most cases. I also use the Apps key on the keyboard to open context menus in the code editor. Moreover, long time ago I am got used to using some key sequences, and press the keys without even thinking. In VS2008, a mouse pointer position didn’t affect context menu navigation if I used the keyboard. Every time I opened a context menu I was sure that, for example, the "Apps, Down, Down, Enter, Up, Enter" key sequence always invoke "Organize Usings > Remove and Sort" function. But in VS2010, this behavior has been changed. If a mouse pointer is located over an opened context menu, the menu item under the mouse pointer becomes selected immediately! So, now the "Apps, Down, Down, Enter, Up, Enter" key sequence will not lead to expected results all the time. In some cases, the result may be a little scary. If you are using Visual SVN extension, this key sequence may invoke "Revert whole file" function. Of course, this is not a fatal problem because "Undo" function restores all the changes, but this behavior strongly annoys me. In Visual Studio 2012, context menu behavior is a little different than in VS2010, but a mouse pointer position still affects the keyboard navigation in the context menu, and this behavior is still annoying. I tried to find the way how to change this behavior, but I didn’t manage to find the answer quickly. Then I decided to go right though, so I wrote a small utility which fixes this issue. This utility watches for Apps key, and if the key is pressed in Visual Studio, the utility moves the mouse pointer to the top of the screen before opening the context menu. I wrote the first version in January, 2011; now I just added Visual Studio 2012 support. I hope you will find this utility useful! :)

• Active Directory and Apple's Workgroup Manager

  I thought I'd share my experiences here. I work for a small business with only ~20 users. I wanted the ability to use managed client preferences to assign things like the software update server. Basically the ability to manage my Macs easily and in a native way. At first I tried the magic triangle solution, but I found this to be very complicated. Not only does it require a Mac OS X Server, but it gives you two points of failure. Additionally each Mac workstation must be bound to both servers. Eventually I sucked it up and went with the schema changes documented here. I was hesitant at first, because the instructions require a lot of manual work. However it was fairly basic and only took me about an hour and a half. Below you'll find the schema changes file that was a result of my work. I followed the instructions exactly and double checked everything, after six months of having this in place things have been running great. Too good to not share. • WordPress not resizing images with Nginx + php-fpm and other issues

  Recently i setup a Ubuntu 12.04 VPS with 512mb/1ghz CPU, Nginx + php-fpm + Varnish + APC + Percona's MySQL server + CloudFlare Pro for our Ubuntu LoCo Team's WordPress blog. The blog get about 3~4k daily hits, use about 180MB and 8~20% CPU. Everything seems to be working insanely fast... page load is really good and is about 16x faster than any of our competitors... but there is one problem. When we upload a image, WordPress don't resize it, so all we can do it insert the full image in the post. If the imagem have, let's say, 30kb, it resize fine... but if the image have 100kb+, it won't... In nginx error logs i see this: upstream timed out (110: Connection timed out) while reading response header from upstream, client: 150.162.216.64, server: www.ubuntubrsc.com, request: "POST /wp-admin/async-upload.php HTTP/1.1", upstream: "fastcgi://unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock:", host: "www.ubuntubrsc.com", referrer: "http://www.ubuntubrsc.com/wp-admin/media-upload.php?post_id=2668&" It seems to be related with the issue, but i dunno. It worked fine untill somedays ago, and then, out of nowhere, it started to happen. Tonight i will disable my mobile plugin and activate only W3 Total Cache to see if it's a conflict with them... And to finish all this, i have been getting this error: PHP Warning: apc_store(): Unable to allocate memory for pool. in /var/www/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/Cache/Apc.php on line 41 I already modifed my APC settings, but no sucess. So... could anyone help me with those issuees, please? Ooohh... if it helps, i instaled PHP like this: sudo apt-get install php5-fpm php5-suhosin php-apc php5-gd php5-imagick php5-curl And Nginx from the official PPA.   Edit: I am pretty sure my .htaccess file is NOT being executed, and the problem is NOT with my rewrite rules. I have not having any luck getting my .htaccess with mod_rewrite working. Basically all I am trying to do is remove 'www' from "http://www.site.com" and "https://www.site.com". If there is anything I am missing (conf files, etc let me know I willl update this) I jsut can't see whats wrong here... I am using a 1&1 VPS III Virtual private server... anyone ever have this issue? I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Server LTS. • Subversion Apache Ubuntu - Remote Access?

  Okay, a couple days ago I built a bare bones kit into a machine. I've been running through tutorials to get it to work and right now I've gotten as far as making it available in my lan, hooray! However, I cannot access the repositories remotely. Any machine on the lan can easily access it through the hostname or, using 'outbound ip/hostname' or 'outbound ip/machine ip'. The machine can be pinged from a remote, non-lan machine and responds. I just can't get anyone into it outside of my lan. I've been trying to figure it out but I'm lost. I'm breaking a few rules and if any of these would be my problem, please indicate. I don't think I have a static IP (However I check my outbound IP whenever I do testing, is that not enough? It has stayed the same for 5+ days) I have not discussed this set-up with my service provider (Does Optimum Online block port 80? If so, can I just switch apache to listen on a different port?) I am in the DMZ of my router. This is what allowed it to be pinged remotely. For security reasons the machine that is in that zone is turned off most of the time until I can get it locked down. Any help would be appreciated, even if it's just a couple of words I could google to understand what I'm doing wrong. Tortoise SVN does not allow access remotely, but it does within the LAN as well.

• linux nooB: Installing ffmpeg + dependencies on aws linux ami (repo issues)

  Im installing ffmpeg to run on an amazon linux ami, and have added the rpmforge repo and the dag repo. Here are some guidelines I'm using for reference: TWoZaO and Razuna The rpmforge repo has ffmpeg, but if you try to install it then it will complain that is missing dependencies (for me libSDL-1.2.so.0()(64bit)). Regardless I will install ffmpeg from svn so I can be sure to enable the options I want (namely libx264). It seems strange to me though that SDL is not in rpmforge or dag, and in according to both of my references above, it should be there. • pros and cons with server management gui tools to manage linux web servers

  i have stumbled upon these GUI tools that could help you manage your linux server through a web interface. ebox, webmin, ispconfig, zivios, ispcp, plesk, cpanel etc. i wonder what the pros and cons are with these solutions. a lot of people is saying that they are not as good as using pure command line (ssh) to manage your server. but i think thats yet another "linux are for advanced users" talk. i agree that a lot of things may only be done with the command line by editing directly in the configuration files. but i don't really want to do that every time and for everything. especially basic configurations these could manage. its like not having phpmyadmin for managing mysql. it would be a pain in the ass right? so if one wants to throw up a web server serving a php site oneself developed and wants all the usual stuff up and running (mysql, phpmyadmin, svn, webdav etc) is these tools the right way to go? and for more advanced features, one just use the terminal like old days. is this a smart way of managing a linux server? and which one would you choose? have you used any of these and could share your thoughts about them?

• Recover files from corrupt filesystem

  My situation: I have an older 80GB IDE internal hdd, with a few files on that I would like very much to recover: some word documents some latex documents (text files) and pictures (png, jpg, eps files) some other text documents and visual studio project files I had backed them (not the latex ones though) up using svn, but have not committed lately, and would loose a lot of work if I cant recover. the hdd seems to have lost its filesystem, i have no idea how it came about. I know it has/had 3 NTFS partitions, i know the files i want are on the second or third partition. I read http://superuser.com/questions/81877/recover-hard-disk-data Partition Find and Mount did not see all the partitions using intelligent scan TestDisk does (i think), I followed the step by step instructions here, but when I try to list the files it says: "Can't open filesystem, filesystem seems damaged." I'm not sure how to proceed here, as TestDisks wiki does not contain this error message afaik. I don't know if the hdd is gonna fail, or some prog has caused the filesystem to be corrupt, the hdd doesnt make a sound, so i guess that's good. I would like some guidance so I don't accidentally cause more damage. (eg. is it ok to let testdisk write the filesystem to disk? I'm pretty the partitions are listed ok, but not 100%)

However, since it is a Windows, the default Find executable simply does not know how to handle. • Interpreting Inkscape SVG path coordinates for HTML map

  I needed some coordinates for a HTML MAP and tried to use inkskape by opening the image and just draw a path with my polygon coordinates. The original image The SVG file from inkscape Link to SVG Progress: I tried a tool called InkscapeMap which looks promising and simple, but unfortunately it looks like it didn't work with this particular svn file. Solved! Saving the file as a Plain SVG solved the problem and InkscapeMap worked perfectly. (Btw. saving as an optimized svg caused a parsing error) Update 13.11 Using inkscapeMap 0.6 and Inkscape 0.48 i needed to uncheck relative coordinates in SVG output preferences. Also if you get a C error message, hunt down the polygon with a C in it, and redraw the polygon using the XML editor in inkscape. • Eclipse grinds to a halt when building workspace

  Hi all, This is a bit of a vague question because, frankly, I don't even know where to begin diagnosing the issue. My eclipse (Galileo) installation grinds to a complete halt when it's building the workspace -- to the point where I can't even type. I know the Android SDK I have installed is a major culprit because I can watch the memory usage go through the roof (through the built-in heap monitor) when the Android SDK content loader starts up. Every time I save a file though, the program just stops. The message at the bottom of the screen says Building workspace (74%) and sits there for about 30 or so seconds before completing and returning the performance to normal. I have a few other plugins installed (Maven, SVN, etc) but I'm assuming the main issue is Android. Has anybody had similar issues or any luck correcting this sort of problem? If there's anymore information you think would be helpful, just let me know...I didn't want to do a core dump on this question... I'm running it on Windows 7 64-bit for what it's worth. Thanks!
