(RoR) How to: link multiple apps, multiple URLs, one database

Hello. I am currently developing a site using Ruby on Rails. I am still a beginner who just started around a month ago. I use InstantRails on Windows 7. Here's my question. Let's say app A is functional using MYSQL database A_development. The files such as views and controller are under folder 'A'. I now know how to, say for example, link www.app.com to this app by opening port 80 and changing some lines in the mySQL config. In this app, you can register your username, login, and post some messages. I now want to create some pretty identical apps say B and C. The only thing different will be the posts that shows, and the views. You can still log in with the same username, and everything is saved in the same database. I now want the URLs to look something like A.app.com leading to app A, B.app.com leading to app B, etc. Can that be achieved? How? I've been googling for a few days already and I'm still lost. As I'm new to this forum, I'm not quite sure what info do you guys need. Please list and I'll provide them asap. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

WCF with MANY database connections

I'm working in the development of an ERP type .Net WinForms application consuming a WCF service. It's to be used by many small companies (in the range of 100-200). Database is SQL Server 2008 and the service will be hosted as a Windows service. Even thought there will be a single DB Server, our customer insists in having separate databases for each company. That is because of stability/support concerns (like DB being damaged or took offline for some reason thus affecting all clients). Concerns coming from previous experiences (not necessarily with same platform). With a single database, connections to the DB would be opened at service start up and pooling used, but, I'm not sure how connections could be managed in a multiple DB scenario: Could a connection to the corresponding DB be opened and closed for each service request? would performance be acceptable? If a connection is opened and maintained for each company accessing the system, what's the practical limit of opened connections (to different databases)? It would be very interesting to hear your opinions and suggestions for this situation. Tanks

Sorry that I could not compile jsfiddle because it's jsf application hosted locally and code is dependent on data from jsf application. Although I have arrange part of it and part if it as snippet here. Now Everything's correct in Firefox. Suddenly when I open it in chrome something happened. The text on raphael paper suddenly gets scattered in the paper. It's not where it's meant to be. This happens when I convert svg to image and again generate svg. Everything works fine in Firefox. Updating database row from model

Hey everyone, I'm haing a few problems updating a row in my database using Linq2Sql. Inside of my model I have two methods for updating and saving from my controller, which in turn receives an updated model from my view. My model methods like like: public void Update(Activity activity) { _db.Activities.InsertOnSubmit(activity); } public void Save() { _db.SubmitChanges(); } and the code in my Controller likes like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult Edit(Activity activity) { if (ModelState.IsValid) { UpdateModel<Activity>(activity); _activitiesModel.Update(activity); _activitiesModel.Save(); } return View(activity); } The problem I'm having is that this code inserts a new entry into the database, even though the model item i'm inserting-on-submit contains a primary key field. I've also tried re-attaching the model object back to the data source but this throws an error because the item already exists. Any pointers in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. Help regarding database and logic layer for my ASP.NET MVC application

I'm going to start a new project which is going to be small initially but may grow to big over the years. I'm strongly convinced that I'm going to use ASP.NET MVC with jQuery for UI. I want to go for MySQL as database for some reasons but worried on few things. I've a good years of experience working on SQL Server databases and on one project I've had a bad experience creating and managing stored procedures on MySQL database. I'm totally new to Linq but I see that it is easier to use once you are familiar with it. First thing is that accessing data should be easy. So I thought I should use MySQL to Linq but somewhere I read that it is not directly supported but MySQL .NET connector adds support for EntityFramework. I don't know what are the pros and cons of it. I would love if I can implement repository pattern. Will it be possible if I use Entity Framework? I'm not clear on how I should go about all this or I should just forget every thing and directly use SQL to Linq on SQL Server. I'm also concerned about the performance. Someone told me that if we use Entity framework it fetches lot of data and then filter it. Is that right?

Since I only need to output the data for specific sheets I added an if statement in the process method to test for the specific sheets. Hello, I have two tables in a SQL Server 2008 database in my company. The first table represents the products that my company sells. The second table contains the product manufacturer’s details. These tables are defined as follows: Product ------- ID Name ManufacturerID Description Manufacturer ------------ ID Name As you can imagine, I want to make this as easy as possible for our customers to query this data. However, I’m having problems writing a forgiving, yet powerful search query. For instance, I’m anticipating people to search based on phonetical spellings. Because of this, the data may not match the exact data in my database. In addition, I think some individuals will search by manufacturer’s name first, but I want the matching product names to appear first. Based on these requirements, I’m currently working on the following query: select p.Name as 'ProductName', m.Name as 'Manufacturer', r.Rank as 'Rank' from Product p inner join Manufacturer m on p.ManufacturerID=m.ID inner join CONTAINSTABLE(Product, Name, @searchQuery) as r Oddly, this query is throwing an error. However, I have no idea why. Squiggles appear to the right of the last parenthesis in management studio. The tool tip says "An expression of non-boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected". I understand what this statement means. However, I guess I do not know how COntainsTable works. What am I doing wrong? Thank you

Exporting database from external server (without SSH access)

Our current website is hosted by the design agency who originally built the website, however we are bringing the development of the website in house therefore need to export the database from their server and import it to ours. We have FTP and phpMyAdmin access but don't have SSH access to the server. I was hoping to run a PHP script that would mysql dump the database, compress it and then copy it across to our server using scp: $backupFile = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'].'/backup' . date("Y-m-d-H-i-s") . Also, I was hoping to run it from the browser as I don't have command line access on the hosting server, however it didn't work, no errors produced though. Can you anyone recommend how I can export from the server that I don't have SSH access to and import to my server? Thanks

Connecting to database suddenly started throwing exception for my website

I have an MVC3 application hosted by third party hosting provider. The site has been running well for the past 3 months without any problems. Today suddenly the Application started throwing following Exception as recorded in my logs part of which is shown below. System.Data.ProviderIncompatibleException: The provider did not return a ProviderManifestToken string. --- System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The message is self explanatory and I first thought I should increase the connect timeout, but then the exception was still thrown suggesting the other part (Server Not Responding). I contacted my hosting provider and he said there was nothing wrong on his part. So I am stuck with a down website and don't know what to do. Any ideas why the provider is throwing the exception listed above. Also, is it possible for me to remotely connect to the database on the hosting server with limited authority. Any tools for that ? I don't have an exposure in database subject, except for application programming. regards, Nirvan

Parse files in directory/insert in database

Hey there, Here is my dillema... I have a directory full of .txt comma delimited files arranged as shown below. What I want to do is to import each of these into a SQL or SQLite database, appending each one below the last. (1 table)... I am open to C# or VB scripting and just not sure how to accomplish this. I want to only extract and import the data starting BELOW the 'Feat. Type,Feat. Name, etc' line. These are stored in a \mynetwork\directory\stats folder on my network drive. Entering Content Into A MySQL Database Via A Form

I've been working on creating a form that submits content into my database but I decided that rather than using a drop down menu to select the date I'd rather use a textfield. Given a string text which contains newline there is a search keyword which matches an item within the text. How do I implement the following in C#: searchIdx = search index (starting with 0, then 1, etc. for each successive call to GetSearchContext. Help- CSS styles for text links also affecting image links

I've been working on this one for about an hour now, and I'm about ready to pull my hair out. What seems like it should be a simple one or two lines of CSS apparently isn't. I have a Posterous blog with a custom theme I designed for a client, viewable here: http://phar-ma.com/ I obviously use CSS to style the text links in the posts. My problem is, the same styles are also being applied to images that have a larger version to view, since Posterous automatically turns them into links to the larger versions (the smaller images aren't turned into links). So basically I need to figure out how the return the styling of the link images to the same as the non-link images. Right now they have weird spacing and borders around them (because of the styles for the text links) and those change when you hover over them. They're also not centered correctly. I've tried just about every piece of CSS code I know, and I've had absolutely no luck. I also searched on Google and found this: http://perishablepress.com/press/2008/10/14/css-remove-link-underlines-borders-linked-images/ but still no luck with that either. So, if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

IE8 Using Google Font on ENTIRE Page Instead of Just Selected Text

All my web searches for Google Fonts with IE8 show people talking about google fonts just not loading or not showing up. I don't have that problem. Instead IE8 is loading my Google Font just fine, but its applying the font to ALL the type on the page! Things seem to be fine in other browsers. Is there some kind of glitch in my CSS that IE is choking on? http://nbkclientsite.fuzzpopstudio.com/ Ok here's some of the relevant css: body { font-size: 16px; font-size: 1rem; font-family: Helvetica-Neue,Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility; color: #444; } .contact-us-text { font-family: 'Arvo', serif; font-size: 150%; color: #2770b4; } .contact-us-phone { font-family: 'Arvo', serif; font-size: 175%; } Everything pertinent should be in just one style sheet. You can easily view it with Firebug or Chrome's Inspector or whatever you want. In FF and Chrome, everything is inheriting Helvetica or Arial as it should be. But not in IE8. You'd have to use Firebug and view the entire stylesheet if you want to see more.

Locking database edit by key name

I need to prevent simultaneous edits to a database field. Users are executing a push operation on a structured data field, so I want to sequence the operations, not simply ignore one edit and take the second. Essentially I want to do synchronized(key name) { push value onto the database field } and set up the synchronized item so that only one operation on "key name" will occur at a time. (note: I'm simplifying, it's not always a simple push). A crude way to do this would be a global synchronization, but that bottlenecks the entire app. All I need to do is sequence two simultaneous writes with the same key, which is rare but annoying occurrence. This is a web-based java app, written with Spring (and using JPA/MySQL). The operation is triggered by a user web service call. (the root cause is when a user sends two simultaneous http requests with the same key). I've glanced through the Doug Lea/Josh Bloch/et al Concurrency in Action, but don't see an obvious solution. Still, this seems simple enough I feel there must be an elegant way to do this.

Specifically, what I'd like to do is make the txtDepartment field gray and marked as "read only" if the option value selected in cboSource is 1. Loading GWT Messages from a Database

In GWT one typically loads i18n strings using a interface like this: public interface StatusMessage extends Messages { String error(String username); : } which then loads the actual strings from a StatusMessage.property file: error=User: {0} does not have access to resource This is a great solution, however my client is unbendable in his demand for putting the i18n strings in a database so they can be changed at runtime (though its not a requirement that they be changed realtime). One solution is to create a async service which takes a message ID and user locale and returns a string. I have implemented this and find it terribly ugly (and it introduces a huge amount of extra communication with the server, plus it makes property placeholder replacement rather complicated). So my question is this, can I in some nice way implement a custom message provider that loads the messages from the backend in one big swoop (for the current user session). If it can also hook into the default GWT message mechanism, then I would be completely happy (i.e. so I can create a interface like above and keep using the the nice {0}, {1}... property replacement format). Other suggestions for clean database driven messages in GWT are also welcome.

The current query is something like this: select a.* from db1.dbo.tbl1 a inner join db1.dbo.tbl2 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl3 on ... inner join db1.dbo.tbl4 on ... inner join db2.dbo.myside on ... db1 = linked server db2 = my own database After this one, I am using an insert into + select to add this data in my table which is located in db2. (usually few hundred records - this import running once a minute) My question is related to performance. The tables on the linked server (tbl1, tbl2, tbl3, tbl4) are huge tables, with millions of records, and it is slowing down the import process. I was told that, if I do the join on the "other" side (db1 - linked server) for example in a stored procedure, than, even if the query looks the same, it would run faster. Is that right? This is kinda hard to test. Note that the join contains a table from my database too. Also. are there other "tricks" I could use in order to make this run faster? Thanks
