Sometimes I notice Desktop.ini files in folders of my computer. Why/how are they generated, and, is it possible to make the OS stop generating these files?
Hi all,
I just bought a used custom-built computer locally. In the process of checking the hardware, I notice that the case fans have accumulated a lot of green "gunk" and I've tried wetting the edge of a paper towel to wipe and rub it off. Still, there is always some residue remaining. What's the best way to clean off this gunk?
Thanks in advance. No pictures, but I can take some if needed.
What is the reason partitioning is usually a step in installing multiple (2) operating systems on the same computer?
Does an operating system have to have it's own partition to run or can it run in the same partition as another operating system? (i.e. -can two of the same flavor run in the same partition but if you have one Linux and one windows it needs to be partitioned?)
Is it necessary to make disk partitions to run multiple operating systems?
We have a number of shared computers that users never seem to log out of. Am I correct that there is no built in functionality to automatically log off console sessions after an idle timeout? I've seen two suggestions: a logoff screensaver, and a scheduled task with an idle trigger. Will the idle trigger work if only the session is idle, but the computer is in use with a different session? Is there a better way to go about this? Thanks,
My wired USB mouse's left button stops working properly after being plugged into the computer for about five minutes. The mouse button will become sticky and not allow me to select things or the left button is completely unresponsive. The mouse driver is up to date.
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with the Service Pack 2 on a Sony Viao laptop (Model number (VGN-NW125J).
If anybody knows how to fix this your help would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to read small text file, located at: /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch without root permissions. It contains information about graphic cards (dedicated ATI Radeon and integrated Intel HD3000).
I wrote a simple script displaying infomation I need, but it works only with root privileges. I already tried changing file & folder permissions, but when I restart my computer, the problem remains. Is it possible to permanently change that file permissions or owner?
I'm logging through Remote Desktop to windows 7. Some other users sometimes try to connect to the same computer, then a message box pops up with information that I have 30 seconds to block this try or I will be logged off. Sometimes I'm away and then I'm being logged off and when I come back I have to log on again.
Is there a way to turn off this functionality for single user. Is there some application that always breaks this login process ?
im trying to image a new HP netbook via the windows 7 BACK UP util. however, it doesnt detect the external drive, although it's seen in my computer and BIOS.

I need to change the socket phpPgAdmin connects to in its config.
// Hostname or IP address for server. Use '' for UNIX domain socket.
// use 'localhost' for TCP/IP connection on this computer
$conf['servers'][0]['host'] = '/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432';
this does not work (even without the last part .s.PGSQL.5432). The path is correct, because I can connect through:
:~# psql --host=/opt/jasperreports-server-cp-5.1.0/postgresql/
Hey,
I´m running openSolaris LiveCD on a computer that runs Windows XP.
How can I mount the 2 partitions I have in Windows, and be able to access them from the Solaris?
Thanks
Is that dangerous :
for the computer (without the battery)
for the cells
If possible, explain why.
Edit :
Here are some more assumptions :
Without the battery included, there is no risk of overheating the cell, or over charging them.
But there is still some dc to dc conversion taking place on the motherboard. I assume this dc to dc stage to be quite tolerant. What kind of trouble can I run into when using 20V instead of 19V ? Overheating ?
Is it possible to safe all changes a user does in his home directory?
The idea is to be able to recover a home directory if a file is deleted or overwritten. My problem is having an old family member (80+ years) who wants to learn how to use a computer. For me it would be easier to recover the home directory from any abuse or mistakes that the user might do.
Is there an easy solution, which is quite failsafe?
I'm trying to connect a Seven pc with a XP pc. The workgroup name is the same, but I do not see nothing inside Network item in Computer window.
I have turned off firewall on both pcs.
Now the XP pc pings the other, but the Seven pc does not ping the other.
What could be the cause?
Hi.
I'm running Windows XP SP3 on a NEC Versa L1100 laptop.
If I wake my laptop up from Stand By, no attached USB devices will function.
Device Manager shows all USB entries to be working properly. There is an option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" in the Power Management properties of USB entries.
Is this causing the issue or something else?
I have the latest drivers for my motherboard installed.
I have 12 hours to backup 2 TB of data.
I would like to backup to a network share to a computer using consumer WD 2TB Black 7200rpm hard drives. Gigabit Ethernet.
What other variables would I need to consider to see if this is feasible? How would I set up this calculation?
I'd Like to set up two different websites on one IP address using two different servers. Right now we are using Apache for our one Mac Server and it forwards correctly both to the pyhsical IP address as well as the domain. We'd like to add another domain to a new computer also running Leopard + Apache

I've not seen this port before, it looks kinda like an HDMI port and it has this symbol next to it... what is it?
It's on the back panel of a desktop computer.
Hello
We have kiosk computers scattered around the country,
and are using VNC to control them.
But VNC has limitations (only works if the OS is intact, for instance).
I want to be able to control the computer even if it is stuck in boot.
Is there a cheap hardware solution for remote controlling a PC ?
Thanks.
Evernote, Dropbox, Xmarks and what not. Many know these but is there a software that can synchronize clipboard between devices? For what you might be asking? Here is for what:
Sometimes I want URL that I see on my desktop/laptop computer to enter into laptop's/smartphone's browser but unless I save that URL to .TXT file, email URL or save to Evernote there is no other way to directly do that.
So is there such software already?
So on my Windows Server 2008 box, I have a DNS server installed on it. For some reason, every ten minutes or so, the Host (A) address for the computer keeps on changing to its internal private IP address. I want it to have its public address for Active Directory purposes, but it keeps changing itself back to the private IP address. Any idea as to why, and how to change it?
If it makes a difference, this is an Amazon EC2 server.
Thanks
I write programs, run a few websites (I have admin accounts and passwords), write some web services, I have some encrypted data on my computer - and I sometimes ask myself: what will happen to all those projects and data if I accidentally die?
Did you prepare yourself for death? Did you make a will (or some kind of e-will)? How to protect innocent people for whom I did some work? Did you write a letter with passwords and put it in envelope in your desk?
How can I automatically run a script when I log on to Windows?
I'd like to run this whenever I log into my computer:
echo %USERNAME% logged on at %DATE% %TIME% >> log.txt
A bonus would be to be able to run the same script whenever I unlock the screen saver as well.
I have two young kids who have gotten rather computer saavy. They love playing their games, especially when it allows them to print out awards or coloring pages.
Unfortunately this means that in the time it takes to refresh my cup of coffee, they can easily drop a 10 page document into the printer queue, and my printer ink runs out rather fast.
How would I setup some kind of password protection on the printing, so that I would have to do some kind of final approval before they get their printouts?
So, I've got a killer dual screen wallpaper that stretches across both monitors. The question is...when I lock my computer or if I logoff and log back in. It shows the default wallpaper on my left screen and leaves my right screen black...until I'm logged in then it shows my dual screen wallpaper.
Is there any ways to override the default wallpaper on the login screen?
