• How to execute files on LAN drives in a Windows Domain

  We have a very small LAN here, but some peolpe here think we need Active Directory, though nobody knows how to maintain it. I am not in the position to change this. How can I get full access (on Linux it would be "execute" rights) also for files on network drives (the files are just on another machine next room) My account is in the group Administrators on a windows 2003 server Domain Controller. I cannot open simple MS Access 2000 Databases or CHM Files from network drives in the lan How to do that? Some policy setting? I want to change that once. It is useless. We have no distinction between local or network files here. I would have to copy everything to a local drive and then do what I want.

• Mac Leopard Server Apache Permission Denied

  I've setup the web server successfully on Mac Leopard Server and sites work fine within the DocumentRoot directory. I have mounted a volume which has restricted access to users within a group. I would like to point the web server to directories within this volume. Can I add the user the web service is using to the group that has access to this Volume, if so: how do I find out what the user is? I can confirm the web server is pointing to the right directory as log files show the full directory path. When you access the site's URL, it shows Access Forbidden.

In this example an anonymous object is created with a Month and MonthName property. You can use this solution to populate your dropdown list with months or to display a user friendly month name.

• I just ordered 70/10 line, and need a new router I think?

  Before I had the 25/5 line and the n standard router did just fine. Now it doesn't do the job. Online speedtest reads at 82 so I have the line. But my laptop is getting less than 30 in my room. My laptop has the following WiFi card: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/wireless-products/centrino-advanced-n-6205.html What is this talk about 2,5 and 5ghz? Can my laptop be connected at once over both bandwidths? And that would let me use the full 70Mb over wifi? Hope it's ok to ask network questions here.

• Apache security for multi-user development web server.

  I've been searching and reading through documents all morning and understand that I need to use some combination of chown and probably 'jailing' to securely give programmers access to directories on my centos webserver. Here's the situation: I have an apache web server that has any number of virtual sites located in /var/www/site1 /var/www/site2 etc.. I have different developers that need full access both ssh and vsFTP to only the site they are working on. What is the best way to create and maintain security in this scenario. My thought would be to create a new user for each coder, jail that user to the website directory they are allowed to work in, add their user to a group and set the webroot's owner to that group. Any thoughts? Good, bad, ugly? Thanks!

• IIS/SMTP - unable to move emails from inetpub/mailroot/Queue due to file lock

  I have a listener that processes emails in the inetpub/mailroot/Queue directory. Once the listener is done processing an email it proceeds to move the email to another directory. However, moving the email is not possible due to a file lock by the process inetinfo.exe. I have noticed that this file lock is released after a period time that ranges from several hours to several days. You can see that the Queue directory can get pretty full over time. The only way I have been able to work around this is by manually stopping and starting my SMTP virtual server in IIS. Is it possible to release this file lock programmatically? If not, is it possible to expedite releasing this file lock?

• Adding a jar file to CLASSPATH is still not executable

  Perhaps I just don't understand how the whole CLASSPATH environment variable works when trying to find .jar files on your system. I thought if you specified it, you could launch .jar files with java in much the same way that you can launch executables that are on your path. I have an executable java archive (.jar file) on my system, that I stuck in /usr/local/bin/gatk/. I added this to my CLASSPATH via: export CLASSPATH=/usr/local/bin/gatk/GenomeAnalysisTK.jar I thought this would make the .jar file visible to my JVM. When I try to invoke it with java -jar GenomeAnalysisTK.jar #Error: Unable to access jarfile .gatk/GenomeAnalysisTK.jar I can invoke it setting the absolute path, e.g. java -jar /usr/local/bin/gatk/GenomeAnalysisTK.jar, however I'd rather not type the full path each time. I have read many of the linked tutorials but somehow I don't seem to be getting this right and I can't understand what I am doing wrong.

• Add 802.11n to existing 802.11g environment

  I have a small home network that is currently running 802.11g. Two computers that are capable of 802.11n and two devices (a BlackBerry and a Skype phone) that are limited to 802.11g. I have a few neighbors running 802.11g but their signals are very weak. How big an impact will the two G devices have on N speeds? Will they pull the whole network back down to G? These two devices are hardly ever used where as the other N devices are heavily used. If I add an N router to the network (instead of replacing the G) and set my existing G router to use channel 1 with 20MHz bandwidth and then set the N router to use 6 & 11 for 40MHz will I eliminate the overlap and allow for full speed on both networks?

  I need some help in settingup/installing and configuring nginx LEMP stack on a fresh new VPS I have. The specs of the CentOS 5.7 VPS are 2GB DDR3 ECC RAM(4GB burst), 1 core 1.5Ghz(3Ghz burst) and 100GB RAID 10 storage, unmetered bandwidth @ 100Mpbs all for a whopping $25/month(unbeatable, yeah I know :) Anyways I have followed this LEMP (will also need MySQL and PHP) stack guide on linode http://library.linode.com/lemp-guides/centos-5 but basically what I want is to be able to host multiple website on this webserver after everything is setup. I am used to using DirectAdmin control panel on other server and want to have things setup so I can host multiple websites - mostly wordpress and drupal themes. Lets say 10 websites on this nginx web server. So can someone please help me on what I need to do to take "full" advantage of nginx power and performance, while been able to easily manage these multiple websites (wordpress and drupal themes)?

• Efficient Trie implementation for unicode strings

  I have been looking for an efficient String trie implementation. Mostly I have found code like this: Referential implementation in Java (per wikipedia) I dislike these implementations for mostly two reasons: They support only 256 ASCII characters. I need to cover things like cyrillic. They are extremely memory inefficient. Each node contains an array of 256 references, which is 4096 bytes on a 64 bit machine in Java. Each of these nodes can have up to 256 subnodes with 4096 bytes of references each. So a full Trie for every ASCII 2 character string would require a bit over 1MB. Three character strings? 256MB just for arrays in nodes. And so on. Of course I don't intend to have all of 16 million three character strings in my Trie, so a lot of space is just wasted. Most of these arrays are just null references as their capacity far exceeds the actual number of inserted keys. And if I add unicode, the arrays get even larger (char has 64k values instead of 256 in Java). Is there any hope of making an efficient trie for strings? I have considered a couple of improvements over these types of implementations: Instead of using array of references, I could use an array of primitive integer type, which indexes into an array of references to nodes whose size is close to the number of actual nodes. I could break strings into 4 bit parts which would allow for node arrays of size 16 at the cost of a deeper tree.

• Is the output of Eclipse's incremental java compiler used in production? Or is it simply to support Eclipse's features?

  I'm new to Java and Eclipse. One of my most recent discoveries was how Eclipse comes shipped with its own java compiler (ejc) for doing incremental builds. Eclipse seems to by default output incrementally built class files to the projRoot/bin folder. I've noticed too that many projects come with ant files to build the project that uses the java compiler built into the system for doing the production builds. Coming from a Windows/Visual Studio world where Visual Studio is invoking the compiler for both production and debugging, I'm used to the IDE having a more intimate relationship with the command-line compiler. I'm used to the project being the make file. So my mental model is a little off. Is whats produced by Eclipse ever used in production? Or is it typically only used to support Eclipse's features (ie its intellisense/incremental building/etc)? Is it typical that for the final "release" build of a project, that ant, maven, or another tool is used to do the full build from the command line? Mostly I'm looking for the general convention in the Eclipse/Java community. I realize that there may be some outliers out there who DO use ecj in production, but is this generally frowned upon? Or is this normal/accepted practice?

This past weekend I attended SharePoint Saturday Washington DC (SPSDC) which was quite an event to say the least.  For those unfamiliar, SharePoint Saturday is a community driven event where various speakers gather to present at a FREE conference on all topics related to SharePoint.  This made my fifth SharePoint Saturday attended and fourth I’ve spoken at.  SPSDC was a bit different than most SharePoint Saturdays mostly due to the scale of it.  We had almost 950 attendees, over 80 speakers presenting close to 90 sessions, and dozens of sponsors.  A big thanks goes out to the organizers of this event.  They put in a lot of hard work and time to pull this event off and should be very proud of the end result.      For SPSDC I presented “The Power of PowerShell + SharePoint 2007”.  I want to thank all of the attendees of my session for coming and asking some great questions.  Below you can find the slides and demo scripts for this session.  I also took some photos throughout the day (not as many as usual since so much going on) so check them out.  If you have any follow up questions feel free to drop me a line in the comments or the contact link at the top of the site.   Slides and Scripts Click here for the demo scripts and slides posted on my SkyDrive. I have been meaning to make the short trip over from Stockholm to NDC for a few years, and this was the first time I made it. I have heard a lot of great things about the event, and was impressed with the location, the sessions, and most of all the atmosphere around the event boots and during the party on Thursday evening. The session I was delivering was my “Grid Computing with 256 Windows Azure Worker Roles & Kinect” demo, which I have delivered at many events over the past 12 months. The demo went fine. I’m always a little nervous when I try to scale out the application to 256 worker roles, it almost always works well and the application will scale in minutes, but very occasionally there can be a longer delay due to the provisioning process in the Windows Azure data centers. This would not be an issue for many scenarios, but when standing on stage in front of a room full of developers you really want things to run smoothly. A number of people have suggested that I should pre-provision an environment so that it is guaranteed to be there when I run the demo during a session. For me the aim has always been to show the rapid scalability on cloud-based platforms live on stage. Pre-provisioning an environment may make for a more reliable demo but to me that would be cheating, and not half as much fun!

• Laptop battery life drastically decreased compared to Windows 7

  I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Studio XPS 1640 and have about one hour of battery life in it, compared to about 2.5 hours running on Windows 7. This is with wireless and bluetooth on, but still, the difference seems incredible. What could be causing such a difference and is there a way to close the gap without losing core functionality? EDIT: here's some output from powertop. This is with bluetooth turned off and Wifi turned on. The output seems pretty normal to me, but as indicated, this is about 1 hour of battery life on a full battery... • How can I log all traffic with its exact length?

  I want to process all packets with their size going through our gateway server (running Debian 4.0). My idea is to use tcpdump, but I have two questions. The command I'm currently thinking of is tcpdump -i iface -n -t -q. Is it guaranteed that tcpdump will process all packets? What happens if the CPU is working to full capacity? The format of the output lines is IP ddd.ddd.ddd.ddd.port > ddd.ddd.ddd.ddd.port: tcp 1260. What exactly is 1260? I have the suspicion that it is the payload in bytes of the packet, which would be exactly what I need, but I'm not sure. It might be the TCP Window Size. Or perhaps there is an even better way of doing this? I thought about a LOG rule in iptables, but tcpdump seems easier and I don't know whether iptables can log the packet lengths.

• Local User & Local Admin User Server 2008

  Hi I had a test recently and one of the questions was to create a file and local user and give the local user write permission to that file. I created the local user successfully however when I went to add permission to the file it would not find the local user when name was entered correctly, and idea what could have prevented this. Secondly I was asked to create a local admin account and give full permissions to the file, to my knowledge server 2008 has a built in admin account, and neither was the server a domain controller. Could you tell me what you would do in this situation? Many Thanks!

• Using unordered_multimap as entity and component storage

  The Setup I've made a few games (more like animations) using the Object Oriented method with base classes for objects that extend them, and objects that extend those, and found I couldn't wrap my head around expanding that system to larger game ideas. So I did some research and discovered the Entity-Component system of designing games. I really like the idea, and thoroughly understood the usefulness of it after reading Byte54's perfect answer here: Role of systems in entity systems architecture. With that said, I have decided to create my current game idea using the described Entity-Component system. Having basic knowledge of C++, and SFML, I would like to implement the backbone of this entity component system using an unordered_multimap without classes for the entities themselves. Here's the idea: An unordered_mulitmap stores entity IDs as the lookup term, while the value is an inherited Component object. Examlpe: ____________________________ |ID |Component | ---------------------------- |0 |Movable | |0 |Accelable | |0 |Renderable | |1 |Movable | |1 |Renderable | |2 |Renderable | ---------------------------- So, according to this map of objects, the entity with ID 0 has three components: Movable, Accelable, and Renderable. These component objects store the entity specific data, such as the location, the acceleration, and render flags. The entity is simply and ID, with the components attached to that ID describing its attributes. Problem I want to store the component objects within the map, allowing the map have full ownership of the components. The problem I'm having, is I don't quite understand enough about pointers, shared pointers, and references in order to get that set up. How can I go about initializing these components, with their various member variables, within the unordered_multimap? Can the base component class take on the member variables of its child classes, when defining the map as unordered_multimap<int, component>? Requirements I need a system to be able to grab an entity, with all of its' attached components, and access members from the components in order to do the necessary calculations and reassignments for position, velocity, etc. Need a clarification? • ESXi boot time with 9 iSCSI targets

  Our ESXi hosts have always been slow booting when it came to iscsi_vmk loaded successfully - sitting here for almost 5 minutes. In all a full server reboot takes almost 12 minutes. We have 9 iSCSI targets per host (5 SANs with redundant interfaces) configured as dynamic discovery targets. Has anyone experienced this? Can it be remedied with static discovery mode? Are there any debug steps we can work through to help diagnose this? (All our targets are accessible at boot so i'm assuming the host isn't stuck retrying to connect to a target)

• Can't change user security on folder - Business Objects XI 3.1

  I've got a single folder within the list of All Folders that I can't change any user permissions on. I'm logged in as an admin and when I view security for the folder it says I have full rights to the folder yet i can't change anything on it or it's sub folders even though it clearly shows me as having rights to "Modify the rights users have to objects". As a test I added a new sub-folder called Test which created ok but I'm not able to then delete the sub folder or change it's permissions either. Interestingly we changed permissions on one sub-folder last week without issue but when I check that folder today I now can't update it. Any ideas anyone?

• Choice and setup of version control

  I am about to set up an new laptop and in the process transition to a new version control system as part of a general cleanup. Currently I use a centralized version control system (yes it is VSS, and yes I know all the pro's and con's of that system, but as a single user system it works well for me). I have very little requirements for a new system and I am free to choose among any of the current mainstream players, but cost constraints will push me towards oss. Some of my requirements are: Runs on a single machine (ie the laptop in question) under windows I am not sharing things with other developers or workers - this is more for my own historical benefits. I want to version source code, documentation and binary files I have a large hierarchy of projects that are unrelated (see below) I have files within the hierarchy that don't need to be controlled (but could be) Some projects use Visual Studio, so some integration there could be nice. There could be some sharing of files between jobs. I generally only need a small about of branching in code files The directory hierarchy that I have at the moment is somewhat like: Root | |--Customer #1 | | | |--Job #1 | | | | | |--Data files received from Customer for Job (not controlled) | | |--Documentation files (controlled) | | |--Project information files (not controlled - but could be) | | |--Software Project Files (controlled) | | |--Scratch dir for job (not controlled) | | | |--Job #2 | | (same structure as above) | |--Customer #2 | |.. | |--Cusmtomer #n |.. Currently I have about 22 customers with differing numbers of projects underneath them. At the moment I have a single VSS repository based at the root of the directory structure. If I kept with a centralized system (ie SVN) I believe that I should keep the same approach and continue with a single repository based from the root dir. Is this a valid approach? However if I move to a distributed tool then I am unsure of how I should handle the situation. My initial guess is that I should not have a repository based on the root of my entire directory structure - but that is a guess so I really don't know how valid it is. Should I pitch a distributed approach at the Root, Customer, Job or sub-Job directory level? Also what I am not clear on with distributed tools (and perhaps with SVN as well), is if I can branch parts of a repository. For example, I can see branching source code in software projects as being useful, but branching my documentation as not being useful. So if I pitch a repository at the Job level, can I just branch the Software Project Files? Or would all files in that Job be branched? Every time I look at distributed tools I get a nagging feeling that they are not suited to my style of setup. I am uncomfortable with idea of having to manually set up something like 50 to 80 separate repositories (if I pitch at the Job level, or 20+ if at the Customer level) within my directory hierarchy. This feeling also extends to having all those repositories scattered around as well - however I do have a backup strategy that I trust, so this latter feeling is pretty well unfounded. So what advice can you all give me? Thanks in advance!

• Can't Access a file I downloaded since I don't have permissions yet I am admin?

  Hi I downloaded some file and everytime I try to copy it or move it somewhere I get these errors Windows cannot access the specified device, path , or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. You need permission to perform this action You require permission from "user(where this is my pc name/myusername)" to make changes to this file. Yet I am an admin and it is my only account on this computer and it saying to me I need permissions to open it up from "chobo2" user yet that's the account I am logged in as. I don't get it. How do I disable this stupid message so I can access every file I want. I am using windows 7 ultimate 64bit. As far as I know I have full permissions set so I don't know why I am getting this.
