• Web form / CGI scripting: User enters "word", IFrame displays "word".html

  Okay, I'll admit being a designer, I don't know much about how data is handled from the servers in forms... (basically the whole programming part). Basically I have a text field that the user types something like "apple", this gets sent to the server and then displays the apple.html page that I have in a directory in an IFrame. If anyone can show me how to do this in a PHP script or Perl, would be great thanks! I think this is good start, it gets more complicated than this... I later have to convert the "apple" into something like 2321 and display 2321.html instead. If anyone can find a CGI script that does this, thanks!

• Which tool to receive customer requirements

  Hi, In my company we want to use Scrum lifecycle, we are using Team System 2010. Team System is great to manage projects developpment and Scrum lifecycle. However we are looking for a solution in order to take care of customers requirements. A tool which give the ability to customer to send us their requests so we can plan it for next sprint. Should i use TFS Web Access ? but which type of Work Item ? I think TFS in general (not only Web Access) is for developpment team, not for customers ... Any idea ? Thanks in advance.

  Hello, I'm currently building a web application. In one of it's key processes the application need to match short phrases to other similar ones available in the DB. The application needs to be able to match the phrase: Looking for a second hand car in good shape To other phrases which basically have the same meaning but use different wording, such as: 2nd hand car in great condition needed or searching for a used car in optimal quality The phrases are length limited (say 250 chars), user generated & unstructured.   Hi, I would like to research protocols such as HTTP. As I am learning Ruby, I would like to write a program that works as a "gateway". I would be connecting to it's port on for example 8080 and the program should forward my request to the real host and send back the answers. • How can I get mounted name and (Drive letter too) on Windows using python

  I am using Daemon tool to mount an ISO image on Windows XP machine.I do mount using Daemon command (daemon.exe -mount 0,). Above command will mount ISO image to device number. In my case I have 4 partition (C,D,E,F) and G for DVD/CD-RW. Now what happen, ISO gets mounted to drive letter 'H:' with name (as defined while creating ISO) say 'testmount' My queries:- 1) How can I get mount name of mounted ISO image (i.e. 'testmount'). Just another case; if there are already some mount points existing on machine and I created a new one using Daemon tool. Then If I can get latest one using script that will be great. 2) How to get drive letter where it did get mounted. If anyone know python script or command (or even Win command ) to get these info. do let me know. Thanks...

• How should I deploy a patch to a Passenger-based production Rails application without downtime?

  I have a Passenger-based production Rails application which has thousands of users. Occasionally we need to apply a code patch (we use git) and the current process for doing this (you can assume there are no data migrations) is: Perform git pull origin [production-branch-name] on the server touch tmp/restart.txt to restart Passenger This allows us to patch the server without having to resort to putting up a maintenance page, which is great, but it doesn't feel quite right since it's not actually a proper 'deployment', and we still need to manually update the revision file and our deployment doesn't appear in the Hoptoad or NewRelic services we use. Ideally I would run cap production deploy and just let the standard Capistrano deployment script take care of everything, but is this a dangerous thing to do without putting up a maintenance page? This deployment process seems to be fairly safe in that the new revision is deployed to a completely separate folder and only right at the end of the process is a symlink re-created to switch the currently deployed version, but I'm still fairly paranoid about this somehow resulting in a lost or failed request.

  Has anyone found a solution to decompressing RAR files on iPhone (not Jailbroken)? It would be great if there was a library similar to libz. I did not find anything official from [URL="http://www.rarlab.com/"]RARlab[/URL]. Anyone successful with integrating [URL="http://wdtz.org/iphone/unrar/"]unRAR[/URL] into their app? The source code appears to be C++? I know that this has been asked before, but I've not seen a solution other than porting unRAR which is beyond me. • VS2008 Complains about css class names it should know about

  I've seen this in a webcast somewhere, but I can't remember where, and all searching terms I'm trying are coming up unhelpful. I've got a stylesheet for my site, and it's referenced in a master page. Child pages that use this master page use these styles, but .Net doesn't know about them. When the site is run, it all works great, but I'm trying to figure out how to get .Net to know about them at design time. This should also fix the issue with not knowing about the javascript files I'm including, too -- I think it's all related and I can't for the life of me figure out how.

I already have a theme for my website, so I want to read about best-practices. • Where's all the XPCOM user documentation?

  Google can't find much user documentation for XPCOM. Sure, it can find endless references to making new XPCOM components in C++, but that's utterly useless to anyone who needs to know how to use the existing components from JavaScript. This is a huge gap, occasionally touched on by trivial examples of creating an instance and calling a method. Has nobody with a more in-depth knowledge of the componentry written anything about its use? Using components with multiple interfaces? Implementing listeners for handling asynchronous behaviour? "Rapid Application Development with Mozilla" is no help (great breadth but little depth). Spotty references that exist to the defunct XULPlanet redirect to Mozilla Development Center, but that's pretty useless. Mozilla Development Center articles point back to XULPlanet, which is a joke. Is this the best an army of open source advocates can muster to promote the extension of The Beast?

• Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

  My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

• postgresql weighted average?

  say I have a postgresql table with the following values: id | value ---------- 1 | 4 2 | 8 3 | 100 4 | 5 5 | 7 If I use postgresql to calculate the average, it gives me an average of 24.8 because the high value of 100 has great impact on the calculation. While in fact I would like to find an average somewhere around 6 and eliminate the extreme(s). I am looking for a way to eliminate extremes and want to do this "statistically correct". The extreme's cannot be fixed. I cannot say; If a value is over X, it has to be eliminated. I have been bending my head on the postgresql aggregate functions but cannot put my finger on what is right for me to use. Any suggestions?

• Saving Types generated via Reflection.Emit as code file (.cs) instead of saving it in .dll files

  Before start let me tell my experience: I am experienced with C#.NET, web services, XML part and few more. Reflection is something new to me, though I have read extensively on it and tried out some experimental code, but haven't made anything great using reflection I checked out many examples of how we can create Type at runtime and then which can be saved in an assembly (.dll) files. Of all the examples I have seen is about saving the created types in the .dll files instead of code file. Isn't there any way to create the code file out of reflection? I need to create code file since I want to distribute code instead of compiled assemblies. What I want to do is something like xsd.exe does, either spit out a .dll or the code file(in any language). Isn't there any way to create a code file, since most of the place I can find is AssemblyBuilder ab = System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.DefineDynamicAssembly(an, AssemblyBuilderAccess.Save); and then lastly ab.Save("QuoteOfTheDay.dll");

  I am getting this R6034 error when running program that I just updated (and cleaned) from VS2003 - VS2008. To be more exact: "R6034: An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library incorrectly." It seems to happed almost at the same place all the time when running. I have no really idea why but I tried some suggestions I found when googleing this. For example adding the msvc dlls, but that didn't work. Any help on why this error occurs would be great. Thanks

• parsing string off a configuration using strtok in C

  in the configuration file i have entries similar to this one: filepath = c:\Program Files\some value Where the path can contain spaces and there are no quotes on that string. I tried parsing this with strtok like: char *option; char *value; value = strtok(line, " ="); strcpy(option, value); value = strtok(NULL, " ="); where line is the line I am reading from the file, option will contain the left side of the equal (filepath) and value will contain the right side (c:\program files\some value). I know, it's poor coding, but I haven't found something better. sorry... In any case, for those options where there's no space in the right side it works great, but in those containing spaces it only return the string until the 1st space: c:\Program. Is there any other way to do this? Code is appreciated. Jessica

• How to recognise vehicle licence / number plate (ANPR) from an image?

  Hi all, I have a web site that allows users to upload images of cars and I would like to put a privacy filter in place to detect registration plates on the vehicle and blur them. The blurring is not a problem but is there a library or component (open source preferred) that will help with finding a licence within a photo? Caveats; I know nothing is perfect and image recognition of this type will provide false positive and negatives. I appreciate that we could ask the user to select the area to blur and we will do this as well, but the question is specifically about finding that data programmatically; so answers such as 'get a person to check every image' is not helpful. This software method is called 'Automatic Number Plate Recognition' in the UK but I cannot see any implementations of it as libraries. Any language is great although .Net is preferred.   Hi, this is a question for the algorithms gurus out there :-) Let S be a set of intervals of the natural numbers that might overlap and b a box size. Assume that for each interval, the range is strictly less than b. I want to find the minimum set of intervals of size b (let's call it M) so all the intervals in S are contained in the intervals of M. Trivial example: S = {[1..4], [2..7], [3..5], [8..15], [9..13]} b = 10 M = {[1..10], [8..18]} // so ([1..4], [2..7], [3..5]) are inside [1..10] and ([8..15], [9..13]) are inside [8..18] I think a greedy algorithm might not work always, so if anybody knows of a solution of this problem (or a similar one that can be converted into), that would be great. • best way to statistically detect anomalies in data

  Hi, our webapp collects huge amount of data about user actions, network business, database load, etc etc etc All data is stored in warehouses and we have quite a lot of interesting views on this data. if something odd happens chances are, it shows up somewhere in the data. However, to manually detect if something out of the ordinary is going on, one has to continually look through this data, and look for oddities. My question: what is the best way to detect changes in dynamic data which can be seen as 'out of the ordinary'. Are bayesan filters (I've seen these mentioned when reading about spam detection) the way to go? Any pointers would be great! EDIT: To clarify the data for example shows a daily curve of database load. This curve typically looks similar to the curve from yesterday In time this curve might change slowly. It would be nice that if the curve from day to day changes say within some perimeters, a warning could go off. R

• sIFR in Javascript news rotator?

  Hi everyone, I'm using sIFR on a website that is database driven and it works great. However, I have a news rotator on the home page and sIFR won't replace the text on the tile below the rotating image, so I have to create images for this each time. Example of the site is http://www.aucklandcityfc.com. Put home.asp on the end of the URL to see what it looks like trying to run sIFR by default. What I'd like to be able to do is use sIFR to replace that text as well, and then other people can add stories through the CMS. Alternatively, if there's a better rotator (or possibly a Flash application) that anyone knows of, please let me know. Thanks, Adam

• What web server should I use if I want to run Java code behind it?

  At the moment, I have lot's of Java which does all kind of nifty stuff and I'm happy with it. The code is command line driven which have been great so far, but I recently decided I want to make the functionality available through web-services. Since my is complex and I'm happy with the way it's written , I don't want go through the pain of porting it to other languages. So I set out on a google journey to find out what web servers exist (on a Linux machine, though it's interesting to hear the answer without that limitation). From what I could find, it seems that there are two viable options: Apache Tomcat and Sun Java Server. What are the reason to choose one on top of the other? what are the strength of each and what are the weaknesses? Or, perhaps, there is a third one which is much easier, flexible and less cumbersome. Anyone?

• Sharepoint: Is it possible to automate the deployment of a custom CAS policy?

  Hi all, I'm looking for a way to automate the deployment of a custom CAS policy in SharePoint. What i would like to achieve is the following: All assemblies that have been built and signed by our build server (with a secret key) should run in SharePoint under the 'higher than normal' trust level. Now I can manually edit the cas policy files to include something like this: <CodeGroup class="UnionCodeGroup" version="1" PermissionSetName="MyPermissionSet" Name="[My Company public key]" Description="Grants all "> <IMembershipCondition class="StrongNameMembershipCondition" version="1" PublicKeyBlob="[public key goes here]" /> </CodeGroup> And that works great. However, we have several huge sharepoint farms, with many applications running on it. I'd like to avoid having to manually edit all policy files to include this xml snippet. • jqgrid - edit form field combobox not defaulting to selected row value after first edit

  i am using jqgrid with asp.net-mvc. I have an edit form (using jqmodal) which works great but for some reason one combobox field doesn't default to the current selected row after the first time i bring up the edit form. the weird thing is that i have many other comboboxes which work fine every time and i don't see any real difference. here is an example of the field that doesn't work: { name: "TechOwner", index: "TechOwner", width: 70, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Person/GetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, and here is a field that works fine: { name: "FundingType", index: "FundingType", align: "left", width: 25, editable: true, edittype: "select", editoptions: { dataUrl: "/Project/FundingGetSelectData" }, editrules: { required: true} }, the dropdown is getting populated with all options (including the current selected row option) but its just defaulting to the top item) instead of one that matches the current row. is there anything to look out for here that may cause this behavior?

• Fake "user initiated" <audio> tag on iPad

  I know that Apple's docs say that an mp3 within an <audio tag on iPhone OS can't be played without user intervention (they cite bandwidth concerns, totally reasonable). However, has anyone succeeded in faking a user action to play the audio? Perhaps faking events to off screen native audio controls with JavaScript? I'm using jPlayer right now which works great on desktop Safari, but is silent on my iPad. I'm prototyping a touch interface using WebKit on the iPad, and audio is an integral part of the experience, so yes, I do have a good reason to want to override this convention. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a way to do this ... SELECT FirstName, LastName, Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 1), Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 2), PostCode FROM Contacts The arguments I want to pass are ... The address The separator (current situation requires 2 spaces but this might be a comma or a space followed by a comma) or something else (it varies). The address part I want to return (i don't always need all parts of the split result). I seem to be able to find a few examples of splitting functions about the internet but they return a table containing the entire set of split parts. My SQL skills aren't that great so I need the answer to be ultra simple. I'm always working with nvarchar data and the function needs to be reusable.
