• How do you choose to use a specific programming language?

  I was having a small talk between teammates about how you choose a programming language for use in a project which lead me to think that there are many criteria to choose one in the beginning of a project but no real standard. Do you chose a programming language for the syntax and semantics? Or do you choose one because it has the best support to do certain things? Or because you have better libraries? Or do you choose it for the paradigm? What criteria do you use to choose one language when you are going to do a project?

• Microsoft BUILD 2013 Day 1&ndash;Keynote

The keynote for the first day of BUILD 2013 was kicked off by Steve Balmer.  He made it very clear that Microsoft’s focus is on accelerating its time to market with products and product updates.  His quote was that “Rapid release” is the new norm.  He continued by showing off several new Lumias that have been buzzing around the internet for a while and announce that Sprint will now be carrying the HTC 8XT and Samsung ATIV. Balmer is known for repeating words or phrase for affect.  This time it was “Rapid release, rapid release” and “Touch, touch, touch, touch, touch, …”.  This was fun, but even more fun was when he announce that all attendees would receive an Acer Iconia 8” tablet. SCORE! The next subject Balmer focused on is new apps.  The three new ones were Flipboard, Facebook and NFL Fantasy Football.  I liked the first two because these are ones that people coming from other platforms are missing.  The NFL app is great just because it targets a demographic that can be fanatical.  If these types of apps keep coming than the missing app argument goes away. While many Negative Nancy’s are describing Windows 8.1 as Windows 180 Steve Balmer chose to call it a “refined blend” as in a coffee that has been improved with a new mix.  This includes more multi-tasking options and leveraging Bing straight throughout the entire ecosystem. He ended this first section by explaining that this will also bring more Bing development opportunities to the community. Steve Balmer was followed by Julie Larson-Green who spent her time on stage selling us on Windows 8 all over again from my point of view.  Something that I would not have thought was needed until I had listened to some other attendees who had a number of concerns and complaints.  She showed a number of new gestures that will come with Windows 8.1, and while they were cool I was left wondering if they really improved the experience.  I guess only time will tell. I did like the fact that it the UI implementation to bring up “All Apps” now mirrors that of Windows Phone.  The consistency is a big step forward that I hope to see continue.  The cool factor went up from there as she swiped content from a desktop (mega-tablet) to the XBox One.  This seamless experience I believe is what is really needed for any future platform to be relevant. I was much more enthused by the presentation of Antoine Leblond who humbled us by letting us know that there are 5k new API.  How that can be or how anyone would ever use all of them is another question.  His announcement was that the Visual Studio 2013 preview would be available today along with the Windows 8.1 bits.  One of the features of VS2013 that he demonstrated is the power consumption profiler.  With battery life being a key factor with consumer consumption devices this is a welcome addition. He didn’t limit his presentation to VS2013 features though.  He showed how the Store has been redesigned to enable better search and discoverability of apps and how Win 8.1 can perform multiple screen scales depending on the resolution of the device automatically.  The last feature he demoed was the real time video streaming API which he made sure we understood by attaching a Surface to a little robot.  Oh, but there was one more thing.  Antoine and Julie announce that all attendees would also be getting Surface Pros.  BONUS! How much more could there be?  Gurdeep Singh Pall was about to pile on.  He introduced us to Bing as a platform (BaaP?).  He said if they (Microsoft) could do something with and API that is good 3rd party developers can do something that is dynamite and showed us some of the tools they had produced.  These included natural user interface improvements such as voice commands that looked to put Siri to shame.  Add to that 3D, OCR and translation capabilities and the future looks to be full of opportunities. Balmer then came out to show us one last thing.  Project Spark is a game design environment that will be available for Windows 8.1, XBox 360 and XBox One.  All I can say is that if my kids get their hands on this they are going to be able to learn some of what dad does in a much more enjoyable way. • Who was your mentor? Where can I find mine?

  In many of articles I've read, finding a mentor is often suggested. One to who would guide, teach and more. (I wouldn't know the details, I don't have one, yet.) So, who was your mentor, if any? I have only had indirect mentors: professor at university, manager at work whom I've watched and learnt from the most. And otherwise, Twitter has been a great place to follow the professionals and discover more about the technologies that interest me. But I still wonder how I could find one because I can sense that I might be lacking in my experience. Ideas?

• Screensaver + lock double login problem after Maverick upgrade

  Just found something strange after updating from 10.04 to 10.10. I've set up my screensaver to lock the account when activated. When I log back in, I see my desktop for a second and then the screensaver starts again and I have to re-login. I checked my process list in gnome system monitor, and I have two gnome-screensaver processes(!?), one started as /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver and other simply as gnome-screensaver. And no, I did not start one manually. Where do I look for a way to switch off one of those (supposing that's the problem)? I did not find anything in my startup applications.

• Is it possible to get the old workspaceswitcher back in the top-panel?

  I just updated my Ubuntu from 10.04 to 12.04 yesterday and so far I'm very satisfied with it. There is only one thing which is still missing to get back just the same comfort as I had with the previous version. I work on 4 workspaces and would like to have the ability to switch from one to another by just one click. With Gnome there was the possibility to add the workspace switcher to the top-panel next to the system tray and I could easily click on just the workspace I wanted to switch to. Of course there I could switch by using the keyboard shortcuts, but I would like to use the mouse in addition. I don't like using the switcher on the left side because it's much slower. Is it possible to get the old workplace switcher back in the panel at the top?

• Solving 2D Collision Detection Issues with Relative Velocities

  Imagine you have a situation where two objects are moving parallel to one-another and are both within range to collide with a static wall, like this: A common method used in dynamic collision detection is to loop through all objects in arbitrary order, solve for pair-wise collision detection using relative velocities, and then move the object to the nearest collision, if any. However, in this case, if the red object is checked first against the blue one, it would see that the relative velocity to the blue object is -20 m/s (and would thereby not collide this time frame). Then it would see that the red object would collide with the static wall, and the solution would be: And the red object passes through the blue one. So it appears to be a matter of choosing the right order in which you check collisions; but how can you determine which order is correct? How can this passing through of objects be avoided? Is ignoring relative velocity and considering every object as static during pair-wise checks a better idea for this reason?

  Although I already predict the down votes but the question has stuck in my throat for a while now. I think this has happened to many of us. Sometimes we find a great idea for a project and obviously think this is THE GREATEST idea ever but then one of the following things will happen: The project is a small one, so you might actually give it a try and see how it goes. The project is a big one, even a risk, and you just need a good programmer's community that you could just discuss your idea with them and see what they say and even get some help to make it happen. And there's always the possibility of others stealing your idea which is really bad. So could anyone suggest an online community or place or even method of talking about ideas and the ways of developing them? and do you think it's a good thing to tell others about your idea?

• partitioning in ubuntu with gparted cant resize

  I opened gparted and as i can see i have 3 partitions(or i think so) first one sda1 (236 mb) its ext2 type file and its booting point, second one is sda2(rest of the hdd 1.36 tb) extended ntfs type file and i have third one that is within the sda2 called sda5 it takes the same space as sda 2 and its file type is crypt luks, so when i try to resize the sda2 i cant resize it not for even 1 mb, i dont know if that crypt luks file is causing the problem, so i dont know what to do, by the way i can format the crypt luks(sda5) file that in inside sda 2 but i dont know if i should.Can anyone help me please? here are the pictures when i open gparted when i try to resize sda 2 i think i did use encryption i mean while it is booting i type password and its says sda5/scrypt set up succefully or something like that and then it goes to my login screen where i type username and pass that is it

• 3+ monitors, nvidia + intel graphics

  I have seen lots of different posts on this issue, but I cannot figure out what to do. I hope we can collect the available information in one place, so that they can be useful for others. Is it possible to have multiple (3+) monitors running on two different graphics cards? I have 1x nVidia GeForce GTX 550 with 2 DVI ports and 1x Intel integrated graphics, with 2 DVI ports. I understand that they would be running on different instances of X servers. Is that correct? Could someone point me in the right direction to start? On Windows it's so simple, there is no additional thing to do other than going in display preferences and activating all 3+ monitors. They can even be laid out alternating one monitor from one graphics card with another monitor from the other card.

• Can anyone recommend a chorded keyboard for a programmer?

  Pre-emptive strike: It's subjective, but it's also Friday... ;) Inspired by this great question and related to this great question, I have decided to buy a chorded keyboard. (A chorded keyboard, by the way, is one with a reduced number of keys, that must be pressed together, in chords, to give all the possible characters etc. - see wikipedia) Being a programmer means that the keys I use regularly are likely different to a regular Joe (a lot more semi-colons for a start), so I was wondering if any of my fellow programmers had tested a chorded keyboard for use on the battlefield of code? Being a nerd, I'm also interested in the extent to which I'd be able to customise my chorded keyboard. (Macros? Shortcuts?) Edit I'm beginning to suspect that no-one has heard of these, let alone tried one. So we're all talking about the same thing, here's an example: Twiddler 2.1

  Just a quick post, mainly to test out the new blog format but related to a question on the #sqlhelp hashtag. The question came from Justin Dearing (@zippy1981) as: So I take it database_id isn’t an ever incrementing value. #sqlhelp When a new database is created it is given the lowest available ID. This either is in a gap in IDs where a database has been dropped or the database ID is incremented by one from the highest current ID if there are no gaps to fill. • Best language or tool for automating tedious manual tasks

  We all have tasks that come up from time to time that we think we'd be better off scripting or automating than doing manually. Obviously some tools or languages are better for this than others - no-one (in their right mind) is doing a one off job of cross referencing a bunch of text lists their PM has just given them in assembler for instance. What one tool or language would you recommend for the sort of general quick and dirty jobs you get asked to do where time (rather than elegance) is of the essence? Background: I'm a former programmer, now development manager PM, looking to learn a new language for fun. If I'm going to learn something for fun I'd like it to be useful and this sort of use case is the most likely to come up.

• The actual difference between styesheet in the header and a seperate file

  Am wondering if someone can give me an opinion on this. I have always been taught to have all of the CSS in a separate file that is referenced from the head of the page. Reading this article http://www.lukew.com/ff/entry.asp?1792 the author is talking about making the Guardian website responsive. One of the things he notes they did to make the site faster and more resilient is to add the CSS inline into the header, thus reducing HTTP requests. Now this got me thinking about the right/best/fastest way of using the CSS If you have one main CSS file, its going to be called and read by the site on every page, no mater how big it is. So with that in mind, Im actually starting to think its better to just inline the whole style sheet and remove one HTTP roundtrip. I know for the purposes of neatness and being able to edit the file a seperate file is better. But which would you recommend and which do you think is faster? Thanks!

• When should I increment version number?

  I didn't learn programming at school and I do not work as a (professional) developer, hence a lot of basics are not quite clear to me. This question tries to clarify one of them. Now let's suppose that I have issues #1, #2 and #3 in my Issues Tracker that are set to be corrected/enhanced for version 1.0.0 and that the last (stable) version is 0.9.0. When should I increment to version 1.0.0 ? When a) just one of the listed above issues is closed or b) when all the issues related to version 1.0 are closed ? Which one is the right way to do it ? And by the right way, I mean what is currently used in the industry. Thanks.

• Why is using C++ libraries is so complicated?

  First of all, I want to note I love C++ and I'm one of those people who thinks it is easier to code in C++ than Java. Except for one tiny thing: libraries. In Java you can simply add some jar to the build path and you're done. In C++ you usually have to set multiple paths for the header files and the library itself. In some cases, you even have to use special build flags. I have mainly used Visual Studio, Code Blocks and no IDE at all. All 3 options do not differ much when talking about using external libraries. I wonder why was there made no simpler alternative for this? Like having a special .zip file that has everything you need in one place so the IDE can do all the work for you setting up the build flags. Is there any technical barrier for this?

• Comparing angles and working out the difference

  I want to compare angles and get an idea of the distance between them. For this application, I'm working in degrees, but it would also work for radians and grads. The problem with angles is that they depend on modular arithmetic, i.e. 0-360 degrees. Say one angle is at 15 degrees and one is at 45. The difference is 30 degrees, and the 45 degree angle is greater than the 15 degree one. But, this breaks down when you have, say, 345 degrees and 30 degrees. Although they compare properly, the difference between them is 315 degrees instead of the correct 45 degrees. How can I solve this? I could write algorithmic code: if(angle1 > angle2) delta_theta = 360 - angle2 - angle1; else delta_theta = angle2 - angle1; But I'd prefer a solution that avoids compares/branches, and relies entirely on arithmetic.

• Ubuntu 12.4 cursor changes

  I have a weird problem with my Ubuntu 12.4 dual screen setup (Toshiba laptop + one monitor). After a while the cursor on one screen completely changes its shape (not every time). I don't really know how to describe it because it's always something else. Sometimes I get four or five vertical lines instead of a cursor, sometimes I can only see part of the cursor, etc, sometimes weird shade appears. This only happens on one screen simultaneously. If I go to the other screen, the cursor appears to be fine but when I change screens, the cursor changes. I tried to do a screenshot but when I do, the cursor looks just fine. I'm using Unity and Gnome 3 but the problem is on both desktop environments. Nothing is wrong with my screen though because I'm also using Windows and I don't have any problems there.

• mount old ATA disk to USB adapter

  I am trying to recover data from an old Linux that was installed in a computer on an ATA hard drive. I found a ScanLogic USB-IDE, an ATA adapter to USB 1.0 similar to the one in the picture: and after switching it on, I plugged it into a laptop with Ubuntu 12.04. I am used to the drives being automatically mounted, but this one doesn't show up in /media. • How do I fool 12.10 to think it uses Unity2d in order to get the resolution my screen can use?

  On a laptop (model older) I have two screens (one built in, one external). I wish to use them both at the same time, but the settings app complains: Requested size (2944, 1080) exceeds 3D hardware limit (2048, 2048). You must either rearrange the displays so that they fit within a (2048, 2048) square or select the Ubuntu 2D session at login. The problem though, Unity 2D has been discontinued. I have forced Ubuntu to render Unity in 2D mode (with the help of echo export UNITY_LOW_GFX_MODE=1 >> .xprofile in accordance to this askubuntu post. But the error message still remains. How can one get the resolution that my computer supports? Or, how can I assure Ubuntu that it truly does use a 2D session?

• Is there a way to disable a particular pci port

  I have a MB with 2 nics on it. a switch burned up and took out one of them. there is no way to turn them off individually in the bios. is there a way to turn off one of the ports. unmap it,unbind it, power it down so the system doesnt see it at after boot. they are mapped as 0000:02.08.0 and 0000:02.08.1 I want to turn the second one off somehow. Since they both use the same driver, blacklisting the module will take out both of them. Normally I would just live with it but it seems there should be a way to do that like in windows (gasp)--just disable it. I Actually have the exact same problem on another comp running XCP so this will be a 2fer if it gets figured out. the OS is 12.4 lts server with xen on it. THX
