• Use Modern Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run windows 8 (Modern Apps) in windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

• Is there a compiled* programming language with dynamic, maybe even weak typing?

  I wondered if there is a programming language which compiles to machine code/binary (not bytecode then executed by a VM, that's something completely different when considering typing) that features dynamic and/or weak typing, e.g: Think of a compiled language where: Variables don't need to be declared Variables can be created doing runtime Functions can return values of different types Questions: Is there such a programming language? (Why) not? I think that a dynamically yet strong typed, compiled language would really sense, but is it possible?

• Help w/ Sluggish "rake cucumber"

  I've been trying to debug some super slow performance in running my cucumber features. I've run various calls through ruby-prof and think I see the bottlenecks (not too familiar with using ruby-prof) but do not know the cause or more important the solution.   Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... Update: With your help I found two programs that are able to bypass Microsoft's limitations: Starter Wallpaper Changer (Thanks to Sopan and javier. • Looking for a software solution which acts like a hardware KVM

  I've seen programs like Synergy before which allow a keyboard and mouse to be used across multiple systems. Unfortunately Synergy treats both systems like they are the same thing (when you move the mouse too far to the right it jumps to the other computer, along with keyboard input). I only have 1 monitor so what I need to do here is have a quick way to view my other desktop that is easy to manage. Remote desktop is difficult because you have to take it out of fullscreen, then minimize it and then re-maximize it when you want to use it again. If there were a single button I could hit to switch to the other computer that would be optimal. Both computers are on the same lan.

• Windows 7 won't read from NAS on LAN

  I've got a Linkstation NAS drive on a local network. Having just got a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Professional, I can no longer read anything of the drive. I've tried accessing the drive using \192.168.1.55\share, using ftp programs such as WinSCP, filezilla and even using firefox to hit ftp://192.168.1.55. The really annoying thing is that through these methods I can see the files on the drive, counting out any kind of connection issues. I can navigate through the NAS file system, but as soon as I try and copy a file off the NAS, things just stop working. Accessing the drive through a WindowsXP machine works fine. So far I've tried: Disabling firewalls Adding the LmCompatibilityLevel key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa Using the 40 - 56 bit encryption instead of the 128 bit. Has anyone got any suggestions of what I can check or try. This is driving me crazy and I'm totally out of ideas? Thanks

• Recover from a corrupted couchbase install

  We have a couchbase installation on a Windows 2008 R2 server that got corrupted (this was from before my tenure, now I want to clean it up). There is no add-remove entry in the Programs and Features list. There is no active service in services.msc. However, something still thinks Couchbase is installed. Shy of wiping the box (we aren't quite to "redeploy test environment servers at the push of a button" altho I'm working on it), how can I ensure that all remnants of couchbase installs prior are now gone? I believe the previous install was in the Couchbase 2.x range, but it may have been 1.7+ Running the installer again gives "Installer needs to update registry value in order to upgrade from the previous version. Please run installer again to continue."

• How to extract corrupted RAR files

  I try to extract a file from set of .RAR parts. I always get the following error: Corrupted so I tried many programs to extract the corrupted RAR files. I have 10 parts, each one 400MB big. The last progam I used was Recovery toolbox for RAR. It gave me the following message: Severity:!High Message:Recovery error for file XXXX with message set file pointer error. The program extracted 2GB of data, but it should extract 4GB. Is there any way to extract the content or am I supposed to download the files again from another server?

• VMWare Headphone Issue

  I am running VMWare Workstation Version 7 on a Windows 7 partition on a Macbook Pro. I have built a virtual XP machine within vmware to run some old music programs. The sound from my virtual machines comes out of my macbook speakers but the volume is not controllable using my macbook volume controls, only by using the volume control on the XP machine. My problem is that i need to use headphones, and when i plug a headphone jack into my macbook, the sound from my vmware virtual machines still comes out of the macbook speakers. I am baffled. • Secure Login add on stopped working after installing BitDefender

  I'm using FF 3.5.4. with Secure Login 0.9.3 add on (lovely little thing). After a lot of persuading, my sys admin finally got to me, and I let him install BitDefender on my machine as well ... and naturally, like all anti virus programs do, it had to screw up something, and it was that add on. It says now in the add onns menu, that it isn't compatible with FF 3.5.4. (which is possible, I don' know, but it did work until one hour ago). What to do to make it work again? All ideas welcomed. I really hate writing all that logins/passwords by ahnd.

• File Saving Sometimes Fails

  When I attempt to save files, it sometimes (randomly) fails. In Blender, I sometimes get "Version Backup Failed: File Saved With @". In Visual Studio, building sometimes fails with an error message indicating that the target file/exe cannot be overwritten. If I wait a bit, I can save fine. It's almost as if programs are taking an abnormal amount of time to 'let go' of the files. What could be causing this behaviour? This seems to be caused by Windows Live Mesh monitoring my files, and locking them whenever it uploads the new versions (BAD considering the amount of times I save my files, even redundantly). Any suggestions to work around this behaviour? Should I switch to a better service to sync my files?

• Unable to remove "Run this program as an administrator" (greyed out) with Excel 2010

  I have issue with one of the user in Terminal Server 2008 R2 who has "Run this program as an administrator" checked and greyed out with Excel 2010. This causes UAC to popup requesting for administrator credential whenever user want to start excel. I found in excel 2010 properties Compatibility tab "Run this program as an administrator" is checked and greyed out (Unable to make any change) This issue only occurs in Excel 2010, all other Office programs does not has this option checked and greyed out. Currently UAC is set to Default (Second level to top) Other users in terminal server do not have "Run this program as an administrator" checked and it is NOT greyed out. The user who has issue is in the same group and has the setting as other users who doesn't has the issue in AD. Could anyone advise me how could I remove this "Run this program as an administrator" in option in Excel 2010? Thank you.

• Windows will not go into standby

  When I select Start-Turn off computer-Standby the 'turn off computer' option window closes, and then nothing else happens. I can start new applications, and Windows acts like I never selected standby. If I have a TV program scheduled to record I get a window asking if I'm sure, there are programs scheduled to record - and the computer just keeps running after I select yes. (If a program is not scheduled then that task in not running/in memory - this problem happens even if I'm not watching TV and no TV scheduling task is running.) This problem happens regardless of whether Media Center is running. Windows XP SP3 Media Center Edition, all current updates installed.

• connecting to bsnl wll, with huawei fixed wireless modem with connected to usb port on linux mint.

  On windows, when I plugged in the usb connector, to the device was recognized as a mass storage device and installed all the drivers, to my computer, then the device, automatically restarted and started behaving like a modem, I'm writing this post, using the same modem, through windows... On linux mint (debian kernel, similar to ubuntu 8.10), the device is recognized as a mass storage device, some times, but, has no programs, useful for linux... When I use the modem on windows and restart the computer and login to linux, the device shows up as "not yet configured" in the terminal command "lsusb"... I googled a lot for solutions, tried many things, atlast, configured it and run the command "wvdial". But, get the error, that the modem is not responding, at last ! :'( Please help me out... Many more people are facing this problem, as I could discover, when I googled for it. this is the website address of huawei, the company of my modem... • How can I apply a DSP to my microphone in windows?

  I'd like to be able to run my microphone through arbitrary DSP filters--Mostly for compression and amplification, but also noise cancelation would be nice. I'd then like to take that output and put it back in a virtual audio device that I could use as input for skype, mumble, teamspeak, or any other VOIP program. With a program like Virtual Audio cable, I can do the 'fake devices' part but as far as I know it does not allow any kind of filtering inline. Does a program like this exist? Or some combination of programs that can be combined to accomplish this?

• How can I use a batch shortcut to open multiple Windows Explorer folders, and a Notepad file?

  I've recently built a computer with an SSD in it (my first) and am in the process of moving a select few of my Steam games to the SSD and symbolically linking them to where they're supposed to be on the main (mechanical) hard drive so that Steam doesn't throw a fit and I get maximum performance. To this end, I'm finding myself repeatedly navigating to both target folders to move the relevant files and opening a specific Notepad file to enter the relevant paths into a template I've got set up that I paste into the Windows command prompt to create the symlink. This is annoying. I've read up a little bit on batch shortcuts, and have a basic understanding on how to use one to open programs and files. However, I'm finding a lot of confusing suggestions on how to use batch shortcuts to open specific folders in Windows Explorer, and none of them deal with opening multiple folders at once. Any assistance on writing the shortcut would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Does anybody provide Visual Studio support for *IL in the form of: project templates, IntelliSense integration, and those kind of RAD features? • windows installer service could not be started

  I'm on windows 7 64 bit, i'm using the admin accouunt, i try to install some programs, but can't, i troubleshooted the error that i got, and turned out that windows installer service is stopped, i tried to start it, it says windows installer service could not be started because its disabled or it has no enabled devices associated with it. Error 1058 How to fix it? Note that the laptop has an expired bitdefender installed on it. I don't know if it's causing the problem or not, i just thought it was worth mentioning since i had many problems with misconfigured or expired antiviruses before. The MSIServer could not be started as well, and i tried to run as administrator The laptop is not mine, i'm just trying to fix it
