• What to know - for building a form with PHP and MySQL

  Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? Hope the question isn't too basic/general. Thanks!

• Any form autofill for 'Developers'?

  Hi all, I have looked at some autofills for Firefox. But they are not designed with the developers' needs in mind. General internet surfers will need a tool to fill in many different forms with constant values for each form. Developers need exactly the opposite, when you want to test a part of your app you'll need to fill a single (or a couple of) forms many times with different (but valid and sensible) data. So, does such a thing exist? An autofill to fill form inputs based on perhaps a class name (email, password, address, url, ...)? I strongly feel if it doesn't exist someone should roll up their sleeves and make one! I for one will put in my share if some others want to team up. But right now, I am desperately in need of one if it exists

I think in that template they are using a thumbnail image, title and content. In general articles we have only title and content. So which module can be used to perform that work and how? • Solr dataimport skips entities in my data-config.xml

  My data-config.xml defines 3 different entities under the document tag (lets call them foo, bar and baz). When I issue a basic full import localhost:8983/solr/dataimport?command=full-import, only 2 of the 3 entities get indexed (foo and bar are in my index but baz never makes it). However, if I then issue a command to just import baz via localhost:8983/solr/dataimport?command=full-import&entity=baz&clean=false it adds baz documents just fine and the index then has all 3 types. Does anyone have any thoughts on why one entity gets skipped in the general data import but then still works okay if I specifically call it out? Is there an error/warning log I can check? Nothing bad shows up in /solr/logs/ but those just appear to be request logs.

  Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!) • How to transfer binary data through multiple http server?

  Well, the question is not intended to be that big. Let me explain the scenario: I have two http servers. server A is accessible to end user by web browser, while server B is internal server which can only be accessed by server A. If server B generate some big jpeg image in local disk, obviously we can't just delivery those path to image to server A and eventually to end user. Then, how to let end user see those image without firstly storing those image data in server A temporarily? I run PHP on server A and perl on server B, but this should not matter. I need a general pattern for implementing this.

• How can I get to the value of my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty from UI Automation Framework?

  Hi, I'm having trouble getting access to my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty values through the UI Automation Framework. I've used James McCaffreys article in MSDN as a starting point (Automating IO Tests in WPF Applications, MSDN March 2009), but I can only see properties etc in standard controls such as buttons. I'm assuming there's some Automation interface I have to implement on my UserControl, but what and how? I can already see my control fine e.g. in UISpy, but I can't see the dependency properties within it. • Dynamic table design (common lookup table), need a nice query to get the values

  sql2005 This is my simplified example: (in reality there are 40+ tables in here, I only showed 2) I got a table called tb_modules, with 3 columns (id, description, tablename as varchar): 1, UserType, tb_usertype 2, Religion, tb_religion (Last column is actually the name of a different table) I got an other table that looks like this: tb_value (columns:id, tb_modules_ID, usertype_OR_religion_ID) values: 1111, 1, 45 1112, 1, 55 1113, 2, 123 1114, 2, 234 so, I mean 45, 55, 123, 234 are usertype OR religion ID's (45, 55 usertype, 123, 234 religion ID`s) Don't judge, I didn't design the database Question How can I make a select, showing * from tb_value, plus one column That one column would be TITLE from the tb_usertype or RELIGIONNAME from the tb_religion table I would like to make a general thing. Was thinking initially about maybe a SQL function that returns a string, but I think I would need dynamic SQL, which is not ok in a function. Anyone a better idea ?

• How to deal with routing when developing a custom CMS in Codeigniter

  Hi All - I’m a recent user of Codeigniter and am developing a simple backend CMS to manage pages. Based on a URL (in this example I have hidden “index.php”) : mysite.com/pagename I would like the system to detect if there is a value of “pagename” in my database, if there is, I need the system to re-route to a custom controller (eg: Pagemaker) and if there is no record called pagename, just do it’s normal thing (i.e. find a controller called pagename) Currently I have: $route['(:any)'] = "pagemaker/create/$1"; whereby all requests are forwarded to my custom function. However I want to change this structure so that if the page does NOT exist in the db, the traditional codeigniter request process is followed. Can anyone offer any advice about how to complete this? Or any advice about routing custom CMS’s in codeigniter in general?

  I have created a class library (assembly) that provides messaging, email and sms. This class library defines an interface IMessenger which the classes EmailMessage and SmsMessage both implement. I see this is a general library that would be part of my infrastructure layer and would / can be used across any development. Now, in my application layer I have a class that requires to use a messaging component, I obviously want to use the messaging library that I have created. Additionally, I will be using an IoC container (Spring.net) to allow me to inject my implementation i.e. either email or sms. Therefore, I want to program against an interface in my application layer class, do I then need to reference my message class library from my application layer class? Is this tightly coupling my application layer class to my message class library? Should I be defining the interface - IMessenger in a seperate library? Or should I be doing something else?

• Refreshing metadata on user functions t-SQL

  I am doing some T-SQL programming and I have some Views defines on my database. The data model is still changing these days and I have some table functions defined. Sometimes i deliberately use select * from MYVIEW in such a table function to return all columns. If the view changes (or table) the function crashes and I need to recompile it. I know it is in general good thing so that it prevents from hell lotta errors but still... Is there a way to write such functions so the dont' blow up in my face everytime I change something on the underlying table? Or maybe I am doing something completely wrong... Thanks for help

• How do I use SDl_Threads properly?

  I am new to threads,SDL and how graphic work in general. I've been looking through all of LazyFoo's SDL tutorials, and had helped me greatly. But in his tutorials about multi threading, he commented that you should never use video functions in separate threads, or might cause problem. I am curious how it should be done, as I still have a vague understanding of graphics and threads. As one of my projects is a shoot'em up, I was wondering if I should create one thread that displays all the graphics, one threads receives all the player input for his ship, and another thread for the enemy AI. If this is NOT how it should be done, (I think it's wrong) does anyone have any advice of how graphics should be implemented with user input and enemy AI with threads? • WPF/.NET data access models - resource recommendations

  We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

• Is it possible to partition more than one way at a time in SQL Server?

  I'm considering various ways to partition my data in SQL Server. One approach I'm looking at is to partition a particular huge table into 8 partitions, then within each of these partitions to partition on a different partition column. Is this even possible in SQL Server, or am I limited to definining one parition column+function+scheme per table? I'm interested in the more general answer, but this strategy is one I'm considering for Distributed Partitioned View, where I'd partition the data under the first scheme using DPV to distribute the huge amount of data over 8 machines, and then on each machine partition that portion of the full table on another parition key in order to be able to drop (for example) sub-paritions as required.

• Best way to deal with multiple layouts in symfony

  Hey folks. I'm looking for the best way to do something simple in symfony. Basically, I have a module in which all the pages will contain the same header and footer. That module also shares the same general layout as the other modules. I'm just wondering, should I create one file and have my content pages called up as partials or should all files have their own content and somehow call the two other templates. • What are the virtues of using XML comments in .NET?

  I can't understand the virtues of using XML comments. I know they can be converted into nice documentation external to the code, but the same can be achieved with the much more concise DOxygen syntax. In my opinion the XML comments are wrong, because: They obfuscate the comments and the code in general. (They are more difficult to read by humans). Less code can be viewed on a single screen, because "summary" and "/summary" take additional lines. They suggest that all method parameters have to be commented, whereas 90% of them are obvious and SHOULD be left not commented. The only problem I have with this is that my point of view seems to be in minority. Why?

  Most Pascal control structures make sense to me, like: for ... do {statement}; if (condition) then {statement}; while (condition) do {statement}; where the {statement} is either a single statement, or a begin ... end block. I have a problem with: repeat {statement-list} until (expression); try {statement-list} except {statement-list} end; Wouldn't it be better that repeat and try have the same general structure, accepting only a single statement or a begin ... end block, instead of having a statement-list that's not formally blocked with a begin and an end?

• Find valid assignments of integers in arrays (permutations with given order)

  Hi everybody! I am having a general problem finding a good algorithm for generating each possible assignment for some integers in different arrays. Lets say I have n arrays and m numbers (I can have more arrays than numbers, more numbers than arrays or as much arrays as numbers). As an example I have the numbers 1,2,3 and three arrays: { }, { }, { } Now I would like to find each of these solutions: {1,2,3}, { }, { } { }, {1,2,3}, { } { }, { }, {1,2,3} {1,2}, {3}, { } {1,2}, { }, {3} { }, {1,2}, {3} {1}, {2,3}, { } {1}, { }, {2,3} { }, {1}, {2,3} {1}, {2}, {3} So basically I would like to find each possible combination to assign the numbers to the different arrays with keeping the order. So as in the example the 1 always needs to come before the others and so on... I want to write an algorithm in C++/Qt to find all these valid combinations. Does anybody have an approach for me on how to handle this problem? How would I generate these permutations?

• New to C# and trying to use a global variable

  Is it possible to use global variables in C#? I'm coming from mainly a PHP background so variables are either accessible everywhere or just a global definition away. My main issue is I have a User class that I built myself to wrap around the current users table on my company's database. I am defining it in the MasterPage but can't seem to access it from the actual pages (I don't know if there's a better word to describe them but they are the pages that inherit the styles and format from the MasterPage) Any general tips or implementation practices for me? • iOS Facebook Access Token To Get User Wall Feed (status)

  [DISCLAIMER : None of the access token or ID below here are real] I've done research for three solid days and no result on how to get user wall feed(post). I have used https://graph.facebook.com/oauth/access_token?client_id=YOUR_APP_ID&client_secret=YOUR_APP_SECRET&grant_type=client_credentials and get the access token which is something like this access_token=454345994651138|bAMGfuW-ueNXGCahley7ga125HN and then https://graph.facebook.com/100005939123542/feed?access_token=454345994651138|bAMGfuW-ueNXGCahley7ga125HN It gives me general information such as user's likes, name, id, current city... but NOT user's wall posts. I've learned that there are three types of access token, which is App Token, User Token, and Page Token. In order to get user/feed by using graphAPI, I need to request to get User Token, but there's NO information in the lousy Facebook Doc! (Which frustrated me the most!) In order to generate the user access token, we need to set some permission, generate the access token, and GET the user's wall feed, which is in JSON format. My question is : How do I get the User Access Token in order to get user wall post in iOS Xcode?

• What is the difference between MVC model 1 and model 2?

  I've recently discovered that MVC is supposed to have two different flavors, model one and model two. I'm supposed to give a presentation on MVC1 and I was instructed that "it's not the web based version, that is refered to as MVC2". As the presentations are about design patterns in general, I doubt that this separation is related to Java (I found some info on Sun's site, but it seemed far off) or ASP. I have a pretty good understanding of what MVC is and I've used several (web) frameworks that enforce it, but this terminology is new to me. How is the web-based version different from other MVC (I'm guessing GUI) implementations? Does it have something to do with the stateless nature of HTTP? Thanks, Alex

• Playing flash video with ASP.NET MVC

  What's a good flash player to use on an ASP.NET MVC site? The page I'm working on will need to display a number of videos on each page dynamically based on what the user searched for. I'd like each of the videos to show up as thumbnails that can be played, paused, and or enlarged to full screen. I've worked with the standard ASP.NET and used FlashControl.dll to accomplish this. Are there better ways than using a user control for MVC pages? Any tips on including video in webpages in general? Thanks in advance!

• Project design / FS layout for large django projects

  What is the best way to layout a large django project? The tutuorials provide simple instructions for setting up apps, models, and views, but there is less information about how apps and projects should be broken down, how much sharing is allowable/necessary between apps in a typical project (obviously that is largely dependent on the project) and how/where general templates should be kept. Does anyone have examples, suggestions, and explanations as to why a certain project layout is better than another? I am particularly interested in the incorporation of large numbers of unit tests (2-5x the size of the actual code base) and string externalization / templates.
