  I know it's a Windows PE32, but I also know that the unit of deployment in .NET is an assembly which in turn has a manifest and can be made up of multiple managed modules. My questions are : 1) How would you create multiple managed modules when building a project such as a class lib or a console app etc. 2) Is there a way to specify this to the compiler(via the project properties for example) to partition your source code files into multiple managed modules. If so what is the benefit of doing so? 3)Can managed modules span assemblies? 4)Are separate file created on disk when the source code is compiled or are these created in memory and directly embedded in an assembly?

• Sending SMTP e-mail at a high rate in .NET

  I have a .NET service that processes a queue on a background thread and from the items in the queue sends out a large number of small e-mail messages at a very high rate (say 100 messages per second if that is even possible). Currently, I use SmtpClient.Send() but I'm afraid that it may hamper performance. Each call to Send() goes through a full cycle of opening the socket, performing the SMTP conversation (HELO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, DATA) and closing the socket. In pseudo code: for each message { open socket send HELO send MAIL FROM send RCPT TO send DATA close socket } I would think that the following pseudo code would be more optimal: open socket send HELO for each message { send MAIL FROM send RCPT TO send DATA } send QUIT close socket Should I be concerned about the performance of SmtpClient.Send() when sending e-mail at a high rate? What are my options for optimizing the performance?

  Why doesn't Microsoft release a 'proper' AJAX grid for ASP.Net either as part of Visual Studio or the AJAX control toolkit? Has there been any discussion that anyone is aware of regarding this issue? Also does anyone have any open source suggestions for 'proper' AJAX gridviews? • System.Web.HttpException in asp.net mvc 2 on images and javascript files

  Hi I am getting the following errors reported by ELMAH on my asp.net mvc 2 site for javascript files, images etc. System.Web.HttpException: The remote host closed the connection I have done some research and it appears that the user/bot is clicking a link on the site before the page has fully loaded. Now this error never occurs on a controller action but always on a file that is on disk. e.g. /Content/CmsImages/logo.png /Content/CmsImages/MemberImages/Photo-001605.jpg /Content/jquery.tickertype.js So this means that all static files are being routed through the mvc pipeline. What options do I have?

  I want to use the built-in web server for VS 2008 and have it run my web-site project as the top level root "/". Instructions for VS 2005 can be found at: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/12/19/tip-trick-how-to-run-a-root-site-with-the-local-web-server-using-vs-2005-sp1.aspx My problem is with step 3 of the instructions. When the the web-site project node is selected, right click never gives me an option to select a property-grid like that shown under step 3. Nor could I find another way in the menu or tool bar to get the property-grid. I don't know if the UI difference I'm seeing has to do with me using VS 2008 and the instructions are for VS 2005 or what? How do I get the web-site property-grid for VS 2008, or is there an alternative way to get the root setup I want?

• .Net OutOfMemory on Server but not Desktop

  Is it possible that the .Net framework behaves differently when it comes to garbage collection / memory limitations on server environments? I am running explicitly x86 compiled apps on a 64bit server machine with 32gbs of physical ram and I am running out of memory (SystemOutOfMemoryException) even though nothing but that particular app is running and the server/all other apps utilize 520mb total.. but I cannot reproduce that behaviour on my own (client win7) machine. Now I know that the app -is- memory intensive, but why is it causing problems on the server and not on the client?

• PayPal IPN & ASP.NET MVC

  Hello - I have a strange problem that somebody can hopefully help me with. For a while now I have been using PayPal's IPN service for our website. In order to test it I have a port opened up on our firewall pointing to my machine. This has been working great with no problems at all. I recently upgraded to the RTM release of ASP.NET MVC and now things are not working. I can navigate to my IPN handler from the outside world so I know it's not my connection or a firewall issue. It simply refuses to recieve any PayPal IPN messages. I am puzzled why the page can be accessed yet the PayPal IPN server wont connect to it. I realize there could be a 1000 different reasons for this, but I am hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction!

• Programatically prevent ASP .NET AJAX scripts from rendering

  Does anyone know of a way that I can stop all the .NET AJAX scripts from rendering, even if a ScriptManager exists on the page? The ScriptManager's Visible property has been overridden and disabled so that you receive a NotImplementedException if you try to set the Visible property. The reason I would like to do this is that I don't want these large chunks of javascript all over my pages when they are not required. The ScriptManager needs to be included on the master page to ensure that only one ScriptManager is added, but it would be stupid to to have to have two versions of the same master page - one ajax enabled and one not. Edit: I am actually using Telerik's RadScriptManager with RadAjax, in case anyone knows a method using these classes instead.

  We initially didn't use any logging or debug tracing but after spending few weeks to trace down some data corruption we decided to put required Debug.Write and Trace for production and Debug.Assert So now question is What is the best practice to use debug and trace logging.   I'm using the built-in Calendar control. It works, but in a few places the way the HTML is rendered is broken or not CSS-friendly and unfortunately cannot be changed (it's hard coded). I was hoping they would fix this in .NET 4.0, but as far as I can tell the Calendar control hasn't been changed at all. Also, as far as I know, there's no CSS adapter for the Calendar control. So, I would need a control that would: Allow me to customize the content of each cell (like OnDayRender works) Allow me to assign CSS classes to any HTML it may render Not render anything automatically that cannot be turned off, except layout code No auto-postback or auto-JS code (I can handle these by hand using simple links or custom JS calls) Basically a simple calendar view control that would give me full rendering control. What would you recommend? Thanks!

  Hi there. I'm working on an asp.net app and I have some controls that are created dinamically on the OnInit event. One of that controls is an asp button that has been working fine until now. When I add a ScriptManager to my page, that same button is unnable to postback. It's only working if a take the ScriptManager out. has anything like this ever appened to somebody else? Am I invalidating the page somehow? We want to create a single page on the website that is accessible only to internal users. It is primarily used for diagnostics, trigger cache expiry, etc. /admin/somepage.aspx What is the best way to control access to this page? We need to: Prevent all external (public) users from accessing the URL. Permit specific internal users to access the page, only from certain IPs or networks. Should this access control be done at the (a) network level, (b) application level, etc.?

I have a MVC solution which has the following: Data project - C# Services project - C# MVC Web Project - ASP.NET MVC Test Project Currently, I am using the MVC2 source as a means to debug my own code. I do not plan on checking that in, but I realize once I go back to the MVC2 DLL, my solution will change. I'm pretty sure I just shouldn't check in stuff that changes with each build: the bin folder on the Web project, for example. Is there a list of what not to commit to source control? :)

Other then NTML, I will also have a Form based authorization (with AD) in same system. The ASP page, is it simple and I can have it from HttpContext.Current.Request.LogonUserIdentity. However, it seem it is missing from the WCF which call by the ASP, not from browser. How to configure to pass the ID pass from the ASP to the WCF?

• Another question about ASP.NET MVC and a separate project for helper classes

  I know this topic has been discussed to death, but there is one thing that I can't wrap my head around. I'm working on a Web Application using ASP.NET MVC and I come across a scenario where I need a helper class (this usually happens in the early stages of development. So I go ahead and create a helper project in my solution that I use to manage all of my Helper Classes. Now, do I have to build that project and dump the dll in the bin directory every time I make changes to is, or is there a way to have the main web application reference the classes contained within the separate project without the separate build process? I'm just looking for the easiest way to add helper classes without the hastel of building and moving the dll every time I make a change or addition. Also, sorry for the very newbie-esque question here. All of the web apps I've build in the past have all been in the same project (web forms, App_Code, etc).

I am sending link to my user through mail, now I want to send each user a specific URL. so instead of sending the clear text I want to send link with encrypted string URL, which I will decrypt on my home page.   I've a problem that number of Handles in my app is continuously growing. I did the debugging and recognize that this is caused by System.Threading.Thread class which is used for some routine. To simplify the debugging I’ve created a sample .NET application: ... private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Thread t = new Thread(DoWork); t.Start(); } public void DoWork(object parameter) { // Do something... } ... Each time I’m clicking the button, a thread is created using System.Threading.Thread class. The problem is that looks like the thread do not frees Handles because each click cause number of Handles growing by ~5. If I made this static, so I could, in theory just call DatabaseFactory.GetDatabaseTable() it would cause a memory leak, wouldn't it?

  Hello, I want to develop some kind of reports in Asp.net with x-axis and y-axis being dynamics, allowing grouping by row and column, for example: have products in y-axis and date in x-axis having in body number of sells of a given product in a given date, if date in x-axis are years, i want subtotals for each month for a product (row) and subtotals of sells of all products in date (column) I know there are products available to build reports, but i am using Mysql, so Reporting Service is not an option. It's not necessary for the client build additional reports, i think the simplest solution is having a control to display such information and not using crystal report (which is not free) or something more complex, i want to know if is there an available free control to reach my goal. Well, does anybody know a control or have a different idea, thanks in advance.
