• Graphic Card Installation Failure (NV 9600M GT)

  I wanted to switch from 7 to Ubuntu. Now, the first thing that holds me back is the installation of the driver for my Nvidia 9600M GT. Ubuntu recommends me 4 drivers from the "Additional Driver" Section. Now, whatever driver I install, there are four things happening RANDOMLY after rebooting: The pc freezes before seeing bootup splash The pc freezes while seeing bootup splash image (ubuntu logo with the 5 dots) The pc gets into login screen and freezes instantly (Thought the unity-bar is transparent now) The pc freezes right after beeing able to login. (While this is happening the unity-bar changes from transparent to ugly-flat-style) I also tried to install the official Nvidia .run file but after exiting the X-Server, it says the driver is not compatible with the kernel and exits installation. Can somebody help me? I really wanna get rid of Windows :( But Ubuntu drives me perfectly insane. Please answer as noobish as possible. I'm an expert Windows user, but Linux is absolutely new to me. My Specs: Ubuntu 11.10 installed from USB Stick (like 100 times now :/ because I dont know how to remove the driver in recovery mode) 9600M GT 4GB Ram Intel Centrino 2 Dual Core 2.26GHz Win 7 and Ubuntu running along side.   I'm on an EC2 instance and have a domain domain.com linked to the EC2 nameservers and it happily is serving my pages if I type domain.com in the URL. However when the page is served it resolves the url to: 1.1.1.10/directory/page.php. • Why does Windows spooler require an administrator account?

  Does anyone know what changes I might need to make to allow restricted users to print using a printer configured for spooling? My Windows XP SP3 system currently requires me to use an Admin account for printing if the printer is configured to spool documents before printing. If the printer is configured for direct printing it works for all accounts. This used to work and some months back it just stopped, and I can't pin down why. The printer, which is an HP PSC 1200 (an old printer) itself is configured for Everyone to have Print authority and my specific (restricted) account to have Full authority, that is Print, Manage Printers and Manager Documents. My HDD is locked down for restricted users given them only read authority to the entire file system except their data directories, which is how I have run my systems for years. I assume there may be a directory somewhere that I need to allow users to write to.

There are several reasons for this, most relating to providing a consistent user experience, easier management of Website content, etc. Furthermore, it's fairly standard for developer portals these days - java.sun.com, MSDN, and IBM DeveloperWorks are also all fixed-width sites. (My apologies to everyone who is unhappy about this change, but it really is an overall positive one.) Today, we have rolled out a brand-new header, the first step in what we call the "Mosaic" project - which is an effort to make the user experience across all Oracle Websites more consistent. To summarize the impact: The "pull-down" menus on the OTN site disappear; most of them move into a "flyout" button in the header. You can access the OTN flyout from any page on Oracle.com or the OTN site. Great for our page views. :) You also have direct access to the Downloads index from anywhere on Oracle.com. If you so desire, you can directly access product overviews, Oracle University and Support info, Oracle Store, etc etc from the OTN site now. Due to limited space in the flyout we cannot accommodate *all* the pull-down items, but they are all no more than 1 or 2 clicks away. This approach has been validated in extensive user testing over the last few months; I welcome your feedback now in comments. • How to keep haproxy log messages out of /var/log/syslog

  I set up haproxy logging via rsyslogd using the tips from this article, and everything seems to be working fine. The log files get the log messages. However, every log message from haproxy also shows up at /var/log/syslog. This means that once the server goes live, the syslog will be quite useless, as it will be run over with haproxy log messages. I would like to filter out those messages from /var/log/syslog. After going over the rsyslogd documentation, I tried to change the file /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf thus: *.*;auth,authpriv.none;haproxy.none -/var/log/syslog I simply added the ;haproxy.nonepart. After restarting rsyslogd it stopped working completely until I reverted my changes. What am I doing wrong?

• intel atom getting too hot

  I own an Asus 1215N which is getting very hot Intel Atom 525D dual core ION 2 (geforce 220 + GMA 3150) 4 GB RAM Ubuntu 12.04 it hits 86 C at idle. Some times (at load or turned on 1 hour) it shuts down due to heat, in Windows 7 it runs idle at 49 C. I tried an acpi call to shut down the nVidia chip which is cooled together with the Atom chip. That didn't solve the problem. To check up to see if it really turned off I checked how much power the laptop consumed, it only went from using 1400 mW to 860 mW, no changes in heat. I also tried reapply the standard heat adhesive, the old heat adhesive made it run at 97 (it couldn't even put up a useful install of Ubuntu). This really annoys me, as Ubuntu is the OS of choice to me. Should I try compile the kernel? Is it true that compile for a P4 is the better choice to the atom, when compiling the kernel for this processor architecture? Now I tried compiling the kernel for atom. Now temperature is 83 C (think the drop has more to do with ambient temp than the customized kernel) help appreciated

• MySQL replication not working on leap day

  Though out of my "core" knowledge I maintain a two-way replicated MySQL database (primary and backup). It's been working fine mostly. All changes are almost instantly replicated between the two servers. But now I've noticed something strange: I have a couple of cases where there are no replication on feb 29th. Admittedly I have not yet confirmed that all replication is lost. But all cases I've found so far have had this issue. Not too long ago I changed timezone from UTC to CET on the backup, it has been CET on the primary all along. Am I fixating on this because it happened on the leap day, or could there be something to it? The servers are both CentOS 5.4 with MySQL 5.0

• How can I find a laptop if it has a different name all over the world?

  CONUNDRUM: A laptop review in the UK talks about how brilliant the "ASUS ABCDE 55" is, but in America, France, etc there is no such laptop name. In fact it's called "ASUS 12345 AB" - AAARRGH! QUESTION: Is there a way of finding out all the diverse names for the same laptop all over the world? Example: if Samsung create a R2D2500, then what is that spec laptop called in all the other countries (if they release it of course). Or if it's not released, what is their similar spec laptop called in the other countries? I understand that specs may be different, but if I read a review on my trusted UK website, but live in say Australia, I want to be able to find the name of the same laptop in Australia and then check out local places to buy it. So if anyone knows if there is a technique, specific website, or even how to use a company website to find out these annoying name changes I'd really appreciate it.

• Dalvik + Java licensing question

  This is a licensing question about the Dalvik and J2SE core libraries. In particular the license governing java.util.concurrent.SynchronousQueue. The license header of the class in the JDK source states that it is GPLv2 only (see grepcode). However, the same file in the Dalvik core libraries seems to be governed by the Apache 2 license only (see android source). How is this possible? I didn't think you could take GPLv2 source and re-license it as Apache 2. (It's obvious they did: a comment above the Java Doc even says "removed link to collections framework docs"!) I'm asking because I have a GPLv3 project and would like to include a derivative work of some source from the core libraries (either Dalvik or J2SE) but publish it under GPLv3. I thought I could do this with Apache 2, but not GPLv2. I know that the J2SE class source is itself derivative work from public domain source, but the changes from the original are substantial. (The original is available at gee.cs.oswego.edu if you are interested.) Therefore the android source really is just a copy of the J2SE source, but published under Apache 2 instead of GPLv2. Is Google really allowed to do this?

  I know there must be a lot similar questions on SU. Let me explain my setup first. I have 4-5 PC, Laptops and Few Android Phones in my office. To get them on a network , I have a UTStarCom, WA3002G1 ADSL2+ router with a landline broadband connection which has nothing to do with any PC except the configuration settings. Broadband channel is always on, we need to switch on the router and the internet is ready for us. No Internet Connection sharing is done via any PC. I have a limited 20GB monthly plan, which is consumed in 10-20 days, depending upon the download requirements. So in the above case, i need some suggestions from you: How do I monitor my Internet Bandwidth along-with the connected systems, realtime? Any free opensource tool available? Tweaks / Changes in PC to save bandwidth as my ISP do not have any Unlimited plan. PC and Laptops are Windows XP and/Or windows 7. Either of the platform tools are welcome.

• DNS NAmeserver Aname and cname records [closed]

  I am inexperienced in the configuration of DNS and have an issue with dominan hosting set up. I have two domains 'www.mydomain1.com' and 'www.mydomain2.com', with mydomain2 pointed at the same place as mydomain1. The domains were passed to me recently by the person who previoulsy controlled them. I have an account with Fasthosts in the UK. When I accepted the domains I could not access the DNS settings and inquired with fasthosts as to why. The reply was: The delegate hosting option for both domains were enabled and this is the reason why you were unable to find the option to edit the advanced DNS records. I have now disabled the delegate hosting option so you can now edit the advanced DNS records for both domains in your account. When I log into the Fasthost control panel now I can access the DNS controls but both domains have no A record or Cname record set up. I am concerned that Fasthosts have blatted the previous Nameserver entries and set me up on theirs but not added any record. 'www.mydomain1.com' currently still works but 'www.mydomain2.com' does not find the site anymore. I am worried I will lose mydomain1 to as the DNS changes filter through the system. my webhosting is at 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' and this is where I want both domains to point. Any advice would be much appreciated. One thing which is confusing me is that because I am on a shared server I have to put 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/mydomain1.com/' to get to my site rather than just 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx'. The form on Fasthosts for the A name record only allows an IP to be entered - does it add the mydomain1.com/ onto the end itself? Thanks for any help given - I'm quite worried about this David

• Is there a way to set access to WMI using GroupPolicy?

  From various documentation it appears that to change WMI access you need to use WMI to access the running service and modify specific parts of the tree. Its kind of annoying changing 150,000 hosts using the UI. And then having to include such changes in the process of adding new hosts. Could write a script to do the same, but that needs to either connect to all those machines live, or be distributed for later update say in an startup/install script. And then you have to mess around with copying binary SD data from an example access control. I've also found you can change the wbem/*.mof file to include an SDDL but I'm really vague on how that all works at the moment. Am I just missing some point of simple administration?

After all, anyone that's used a caching system HAS answered this question, most likely with trial&error&luck. I can look at my usage patterns. I can increase or decrease memory and see how hit rate changes. Both of these provide data that informs an estimate. But what's a good/better/best way to do this?

• Windows Task Scheduler does not start task at next run time

  I have a Windows Server 2008 SP 2 Task Scheduler task that should run every 10 minutes. The trigger says "At 6:50 PM every day - After triggered, repeat every 10 minutes for a duration of 1 day." Looking at the Next Run Time, it says 6/18/2012 8:00 PM. However, when I let that time pass, the Next Run Time just changes to 8:10 PM but the task has not started and the Last Run Time is unchanged from yesterday. How can I get this task to run every 10 minutes when enabled no matter what. Similarly, I have other tasks that need to run on slightly different schedules: Every 30 minutes (5:30, 6:00, 6:30, etc) Every 30 minutes (5:35, 6:05, 6:35, etc) How can I define these intervals? And why does the task not start at the indicated Next Run Time?

• Can I recover a nano process from a previous terminal?

  My system crashed while I was in a nano session with unsaved changes. When I log back in via SSH I see the nano process still running when I do a ps. davidparks21@devdb1:/opt/frugg_batch$ ps -ef | grep nano 1001 31714 29481 0 18:32 pts/0 00:00:00 nano frugg_batch_processing 1001 31905 31759 0 19:16 pts/1 00:00:00 grep --color=auto nano davidparks21@devdb1:/opt/frugg_batch$ Is there a way I can bring the nano process back under my control in the new terminal? Or any way to force it to save remotely (from my new terminal)?

• How to interpret number of URL errors in Google webmaster tools

  Recently Google has made some changes to Webmaster tools which are explained below: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/03/crawl-errors-next-generation.html One thing I could not find out is how to interpret the number of errors over time. At the end of February we've recently migrated our website and didn't implement redirect rules for some pages (quite a few actually). Here is what we're getting from the Crawl errors: What I don't know is if the number of errors is cumulative over time or not (i.e. if Google bots crawl your website on 2 different days and find 1 separate issue on each day, whether they will report 1 error for each day, or 1 for the 1st, and 2 for the 2nd). Based on the Crawl stats we can see that the number of requests made by Google bots doesn't increase: Therefore I believe the number of errors reported is cumulative and that an error detected on 1 day is taken into account and reported on the subsequent days until the underlying problem is fixed and the page it's crawled again (or if you manually Mark as fixed the error) because if you don't make more requests to a website, there is no way you can check new pages and old pages at the same time. Q: Am I interpreting the number of errors correctly?

• Mantaining Wordpress website with subversion

  I want to setup a website using wordpress, which we can modified locally and then via subversion commit the site and make it public. This means to installing new plugins, changing the content, testing updates of wordpress to see if they work with the theme, etc. The idea is to control the development on the site, in case we need to keep track of the dev or roll back, because of unexpected bugs in a the plugins, theme, etc. I've read this article in codex, however I'm not sure how this is done when, we want to include the content and changes on the options of worpdress and plugins (which is in the mysql).
