  • Grails query not using GORM

    - by Tihom
What is the best way to query for something without using GORM in grails? I have query that doesn't seem to fit in the GORM model, the query has a subquery and a computed field. I posted on stackoverflow already with no response so I decided to take a different approach. I want to query for something not using GORM within a grails application. Is there an easy way to get the connection and go through the result set?

  • questions regarding the use of A* with the 15-square puzzle

    - by Cheeso
    I'm trying to build an A* solver for a 15-square puzzle. The goal is to re-arrange the tiles so that they appear in their natural positions. You can only slide one tile at a time. Each possible state of the puzzle is a node in the search graph. For the h(x) function, I am using an aggregate sum, across all tiles, of the tile's dislocation from the goal state. In the above image, the 5 is at location 0,0, and it belongs at location 1,0, therefore it contributes 1 to the h(x) function. The next tile is the 11, located at 0,1, and belongs at 2,2, therefore it contributes 3 to h(x). And so on. EDIT: I now understand this is what they call "Manhattan distance", or "taxicab distance". I have been using a step count for g(x). In my implementation, for any node in the state graph, g is just +1 from the prior node's g. To find successive nodes, I just examine where I can possibly move the "hole" in the puzzle. There are 3 neighbors for the puzzle state (aka node) that is displayed: the hole can move north, west, or east. My A* search sometimes converges to a solution in 20s, sometimes 180s, and sometimes doesn't converge at all (waited 10 mins or more). I think h is reasonable. I'm wondering if I've modeled g properly. In other words, is it possible that my A* function is reaching a node in the graph via a path that is not the shortest path? Maybe have I not waited long enough? Maybe 10 minutes is not long enough? For a fully random arrangement, (assuming no parity problems), What is the average number of permutations an A* solution will examine? (please show the math) I'm going to look for logic errors in my code, but in the meantime, Any tips? (ps: it's done in Javascript). Also, no, this isn't CompSci homework. It's just a personal exploration thing. I'm just trying to learn Javascript. EDIT: I've found that the run-time is highly depend upon the heuristic. I saw the 10x factor applied to the heuristic from the article someone mentioned, and it made me wonder - why 10x? Why linear? Because this is done in javascript, I could modify the code to dynamically update an html table with the node currently being considered. This allowd me to peek at the algorithm as it was progressing. With a regular taxicab distance heuristic, I watched as it failed to converge. There were 5's and 12's in the top row, and they kept hanging around. I'd see 1,2,3,4 creep into the top row, but then they'd drop out, and other numbers would move up there. What I was hoping to see was 1,2,3,4 sort of creeping up to the top, and then staying there. I thought to myself - this is not the way I solve this personally. Doing this manually, I solve the top row, then the 2ne row, then the 3rd and 4th rows sort of concurrently. So I tweaked the h(x) function to more heavily weight the higher rows and the "lefter" columns. The result was that the A* converged much more quickly. It now runs in 3 minutes instead of "indefinitely". With the "peek" I talked about, I can see the smaller numbers creep up to the higher rows and stay there. Not only does this seem like the right thing, it runs much faster. I'm in the process of trying a bunch of variations. It seems pretty clear that A* runtime is very sensitive to the heuristic. Currently the best heuristic I've found uses the summation of dislocation * ((4-i) + (4-j)) where i and j are the row and column, and dislocation is the taxicab distance. One interesting part of the result I got: with a particular heuristic I find a path very quickly, but it is obviously not the shortest path. I think this is because I am weighting the heuristic. In one case I got a path of 178 steps in 10s. My own manual effort produce a solution in 87 moves. (much more than 10s). More investigation warranted. So the result is I am seeing it converge must faster, and the path is definitely not the shortest. I have to think about this more. Code: var stop = false; function Astar(start, goal, callback) { // start and goal are nodes in the graph, represented by // an array of 16 ints. The goal is: [1,2,3,...14,15,0] // Zero represents the hole. // callback is a method to call when finished. This runs a long time, // therefore we need to use setTimeout() to break it up, to avoid // the browser warning like "Stop running this script?" // g is the actual distance traveled from initial node to current node. // h is the heuristic estimate of distance from current to goal. stop = false; start.g = start.dontgo = 0; // calcHeuristic inserts an .h member into the array calcHeuristicDistance(start); // start the stack with one element var closed = []; // set of nodes already evaluated. var open = [ start ]; // set of nodes to evaluate (start with initial node) var iteration = function() { if (open.length==0) { // no more nodes. Fail. callback(null); return; } var current = open.shift(); // get highest priority node // update the browser with a table representation of the // node being evaluated $("#solution").html(stateToString(current)); // check solution returns true if current == goal if (checkSolution(current,goal)) { // reconstructPath just records the position of the hole // through each node var path= reconstructPath(start,current); callback(path); return; } closed.push(current); // get the set of neighbors. This is 3 or fewer nodes. // (nextStates is optimized to NOT turn directly back on itself) var neighbors = nextStates(current, goal); for (var i=0; i<neighbors.length; i++) { var n = neighbors[i]; // skip this one if we've already visited it if (closed.containsNode(n)) continue; // .g, .h, and .previous get assigned implicitly when // calculating neighbors. n.g is nothing more than // current.g+1 ; // add to the open list if (!open.containsNode(n)) { // slot into the list, in priority order (minimum f first) open.priorityPush(n); n.previous = current; } } if (stop) { callback(null); return; } setTimeout(iteration, 1); }; // kick off the first iteration iteration(); return null; }

  • CRUD Question with Codeigniter

    - by Brad
I have a database with blog entries in it. The desired output I am trying to acheive is 3 entrys displayed using the css3 multi paragraph and then another 3(or more) formatted with the codeigniter Character_limiter. So I need 3 displays formatted one way and 3+ formatted another way on the same page. So far this is what I have, but i do not know how to format the sql to achieve what I want. I can call all posts in descending order like I want, but dont know how to separate the code to achieve my output Controller: $this->db->order_by('id', 'DESC'); $this->db->limit('2'); $query = $this->db->get('posts'); if($query->result()) $data = array(); { $data['blog'] = $query->result(); } $data['title'] = 'LemonRose'; $data['content'] = 'home/home_content'; $this->load->view('template1', $data); View: <?php if (isset($blog)): foreach ($blog as $row): ?> <span class="title"><?php echo $row->title; ?> </span> <?php echo $row->date; ?> <div class="split"><?php echo $row->post =$this->typography->auto_typography($row->post); ?></div> <?php echo 'Post #',$row->id; ?> <p> Trackback URL: <? echo base_url()."trackbacks/track/$row->id";?></p> <hr /> <?php endforeach; endif; ?> The split class is multiple columns. I tried 2 different querys but dont know how to separate all the post displays. Also one query always overides the second and produces all split or all character limited paragraphs. Im lost here lol. Thanks

  • Can I query inside a SQLite Transaction?

    - by CSharperWithJava
I'm using the SQLite3 database system in the Android library. I need to execute a query during a transaction to see if there is a similar entry already there. If there is, I have to perform some other logic and adjustments before I add a new row. Can I execute a query within a transaction and get the result back immediately?

  • Determine caller within stored proc or trigger

    - by Mike Clark
I am working with an insert trigger within a Sybase database. I know I can access the @@nestlevel to determine whether I am being called directly or as a result of another trigger or procedure. Is there any way to determine, when the nesting level is deeper than 1, who performed the action causing the trigger to fire? For example, was the table inserted to directly, was it inserted into by another trigger and if so, which one.

  • How to include the total number of returned rows in the resultset from SELECT T-SQL command?

    - by quarkX
I would like to ask if there is a way to include the total number of rows, as an additional column, in the returned result sets from a TSQL query using also the Row_Number (SQL 2005) command. For example, getting the results set from a query against Book table in a form similar to this: RowNum BookId BookTitle TotalRows -------------------------------------------- 1 1056 Title1 5 2 1467 Title2 5 3 121 Title3 5 4 1789 Title4 5 5 789 Title5 5

  • Clean way to assign value unless empty

    - by atmorell
Hello, I often need to assign a variable, if the source value is set. So far I have done it like this: filters[:red] = params[:search][:red] unless params[:search][:red].nil? This works but looks a bit clumsy. There must be a more DRY way of getting this result. Any suggestions? Best regards. Asbjørn Morell.

  • CBIR isk-daemon software alternatives

    - by postgres
isk-daemon software permits setting feature parameters? I download desktop version and apparently not! There are alternative libraries or software which is not all automatic? I have a set of images and i only want to pick up an image, extract some features and compare them with this set of image, basing on a similarity metric that give me a percentage result like isk-daemon but with more freedom in settings, better in python!

  • A more elegant way to parse a string with ruby regular expression using variable grouping?

    - by i0n
At the moment I have a regular expression that looks like this: ^(cat|dog|bird){1}(cat|dog|bird)?(cat|dog|bird)?$ It matches at least 1, and at most 3 instances of a long list of words and makes the matching words for each group available via the corresponding variable. Is there a way to revise this so that I can return the result for each word in the string without specifying the number of groups beforehand? ^(cat|dog|bird)+$ works but only returns the last match separately , because there is only one group.

  • Grails Domain.get() returns null for mongo's ObjectId

    - by Shashank Agrawal
I'm using grails 2.3.5 with mongodb 3.0.1 and no hibernate installed. I've a domain class which uses mongo's ObjectId. import org.bson.types.ObjectId class Category { ObjectId id String name } And has a record in mongo database: { "_id": ObjectId("53f6c34c33a429240e2ab471"), "name": "art", "version": NumberLong("41") } When I do, Category.get(new ObjectId("53f6c34c33a429240e2ab471")) somewhere in grails app, it returns null but when I do Category.get("53f6c34c33a429240e2ab471") it then actually returns the result. Why, get() method does not process ObjectId type?

  • Perl daemon script for message queue hanging for 20 seconds after each process. Why?

    - by Mike Diena
I have daemon script written in Perl that checks a database tables for rows, pulls them in one by one, sends the contents via HTTP post to another service, then logs the result and repeats (only a single child). When there are rows present, the first one is posted and logged immediately, but every subsequent one is delayed for around 20 seconds. There are no sleep()'s running, and I can't find any other obvious delays. Any ideas?

  • DRY-ing very similar specs for ASP.NET MVC controller action with MSpec (BDD guidelines)

    - by spapaseit
Hi all, I have two very similar specs for two very similar controller actions: VoteUp(int id) and VoteDown(int id). These methods allow a user to vote a post up or down; kinda like the vote up/down functionality for StackOverflow questions. The specs are: VoteDown: [Subject(typeof(SomeController))] public class When_user_clicks_the_vote_down_button_on_a_post : SomeControllerContext { Establish context = () => { post = PostFakes.VanillaPost(); post.Votes = 10; session.Setup(s => s.Single(Moq.It.IsAny<Expression<Func<Post, bool>>>())).Returns(post); session.Setup(s => s.CommitChanges()); }; Because of = () => result = controller.VoteDown(1); It should_decrement_the_votes_of_the_post_by_1 = () => suggestion.Votes.ShouldEqual(9); It should_not_let_the_user_vote_more_than_once; } VoteUp: [Subject(typeof(SomeController))] public class When_user_clicks_the_vote_down_button_on_a_post : SomeControllerContext { Establish context = () => { post = PostFakes.VanillaPost(); post.Votes = 0; session.Setup(s => s.Single(Moq.It.IsAny<Expression<Func<Post, bool>>>())).Returns(post); session.Setup(s => s.CommitChanges()); }; Because of = () => result = controller.VoteUp(1); It should_increment_the_votes_of_the_post_by_1 = () => suggestion.Votes.ShouldEqual(1); It should_not_let_the_user_vote_more_than_once; } So I have two questions: How should I go about DRY-ing these two specs? Is it even advisable or should I actually have one spec per controller action? I know I Normally should, but this feels like repeating myself a lot. Is there any way to implement the second It within the same spec? Note that the It should_not_let_the_user_vote_more_than_once; requires me the spec to call controller.VoteDown(1) twice. I know the easiest would be to create a separate spec for it too, but it'd be copying and pasting the same code yet again... I'm still getting the hang of BDD (and MSpec) and many times it is not clear which way I should go, or what the best practices or guidelines for BDD are. Any help would be appreciated.
