  • Devoxx 2011 Trip Report + Pictures

    3350 attendees from 40 countries lived in "paradise" for 5 days last week. This paradise had 170+ rock star speakers delivering 200+ hours of technical content in about 150 sessions. And it truly was a paradise with a clear differentiation from other Java conferences. There were several Oracle speakers at the paradise covering the entire gamut of Java platform. I delivered a Java EE 6 hands-on lab (new content), showcased Java EE 7 and GlassFish 4.0 early work at the keynote, and participated in a panel to talk about Contexts and Dependency Injection. The demo in the keynote showed how to deploy a Java EE application in a managed environment. The demo showed a Conference Planner application that can be used by conference organizers to display sessions, tracks, and speaker information. This same application can be deployed and display data from JavaOne 2011 or Devoxx 2011 based upon the SQL chosen for database initialization. If javaone-sf-2011.sql is chosen for datbase initialization then the application looks like as shown: If devoxx-2011.sql is chosen then the application looks like as shown: And of course, clicking on Tracks, Speakers, Sessions shows you information from the respective conference.     A figura abaixo oferece uma visão geral das possibilidades de monitoramento providas pelo Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), que é uma ferramenta que permite gerenciar a infraestrutura de TI da empresa. Um componente importante da solução é chanado OEM Grid Control. Esse componente permite gerenciar, visualizar e monitorar diversos elementos a partir de uma mesma console. E que elementos podem ser monitorados? No conceito utilizado pelo OEM, os elementos que podem ser monitorados são chamados de Targets, e esses targets envolvem a monitoração de hosts (Windows, Linux, Solaris), Banco de Dados, Middleware, Aplicações Web, Serviços que podem ser customizados pelo administrador, Sistemas e Grupos de targets, além dos aplicativos Oracle. Cada elemento monitorado é ativado através de packs de gerenciamento. Ou seja, há uma série de packs que podem ser adquiridas conforme a necessidade, para permitir a monitoração a partir do próprio OEM Grid Control. Existem packs de monitoramento especiais para banco de dados Oracle, packs de monitoramento para Tomcat, Jboss, WebLogic, SOA Suite, Identity Management. Os plugins permitem o gerenciamento de elementos adicionais, tais como dispositivos de rede, servidores, banco de dados de terceiros (DB2, SQL Server), Vmware, etc. Já os conectores permitem a integração com outros softwares, tais como gerenciadores de requisições de helpdesk, de modo a integrar os alertas gerados pela ferramenta e gerar tickets em ferramentas como CA Service Desk, BMC Remedy e outros. A extensão de funcionalidades é realmente bem vasta. Num próximo post irei comentar sobre o Ops Center, um novo componente que surgiu após a aquisição da Sun. Além do Grid Control e do Ops Center, há outros componentes bem interessantes. A figura abaixo ilustra diversas camadas onde o ferramental Oracle pode ser usado para monitoração. Há uma pack que permite gerenciar os níveis de serviços em todas as camadas ilustradas. Dada uma requisição, pode-se decompor os dados de SLA em cada camada. E há também o Real User Monitoring, que trata de medir a experiência com o usuário. Falarei disso num novo post, mas basicamente a ferramenta permite acompanhar todo o tráfego de rede gerado dos usuários finais até os servidores web, e com isso rastrear como cada usuário usa a aplicação, quanto tempo ele navega pelo site, se ele enfrentou algum tipo de problema, se houve algum pedido não finalizado devido a algum problema na infraestrutura. É uma ferramenta bem interessante, falarei um pouco mais dela depois. E claro, há também componentes para a realização de testes funcionais e de carga. Em breve, aqui no blog :)

  • “Cloud Integration in Minutes” – True or False?

    The short answer is “yes”. Connecting on-premise and cloud applications “in minutes” is true…provided you only consider the connectivity subset of integration and have a small number of cloud integration touch points. At the recent Gartner AADI conference, 230 attendees filled up the Oracle session to get a more comprehensive answer to this question. During the session, titled “Simplifying Integration – The Cloud & Mobile Pre-requisite”, Oracle’s Tim Hall described cloud connectivity and then, equally importantly, the other essential and sometimes overlooked aspects of integration required to ensure a long term application and service integration strategy. To understand the challenges and opportunities faced by cloud integration, the session started off with a slide that describes how connectivity can quickly transition from simplicity to complexity as the number of applications and service vendor instances grows: Increased complexity puts increased demand on the integration platform As companies expand from on-premise applications into a hybrid on-premise/cloud infrastructure with support for mobile, cloud, and social, there is a new sense of urgency to implement a unified and comprehensive service integration platform. Without getting this unified platform in place, companies face increased complexity and cost managing a growing patchwork of niche integration toolsets as well as the disparate standards mandated by each SaaS vendor as shown in the image below: dddddddddddddddddddd Incomplete and overlapping offerings from a patchwork of niche vendors Also at Gartner AADI, Oracle SOA Suite customer Geeta Pyne, Director of Middleware at BMC presented their successful strategy on how BMC efficiently manages their cloud integration despite disparate requirements from each vendor. From one of Geeta’s slide: Interfaces are dictated by SaaS vendors; wide variety (SOAP, REST, Socket, HTTP/POX, SFTP); Flexibility of Oracle Service Bus/SOA Suite helps to support Every vendor has their way to handle Security; WS-Security, Custom Header; Support in Oracle Service Bus helps to adhere to disparate requirements At BMC, the flexibility of Oracle Service Bus and Oracle SOA Suite allowed them to support the wide variation in the functional requirements as mandated by their SaaS vendors. In contrast to the patchwork platform approach of escalating complexity from overlapping SaaS toolkits, Oracle’s strategy is to provide a unified platform to support disparate requirements from your SaaS vendors, on-premise apps, legacy apps, and more. Furthermore, Oracle SOA Suite includes the many aspects of comprehensive integration beyond basic connectivity including orchestration, analytics (BAM, events…), service virtualization and more in a single unified interface. Oracle SOA Suite – Unified and comprehensive To summarize, yes you can achieve “cloud integration in minutes” when considering the connectivity subset of integration but be sure to look for ways to simplify as you consider a more comprehensive view of integration beyond basic connectivity such as service virtualization, management, event processing and more. And finally, be sure your integration platform has the deep flexibility to handle the requirements of all your future SaaS applications…many of which are unknown to you now.

  • How to Make Ubuntu Play MP3 Files

    Because of licensing issues, Ubuntu is unable to play MP3s out of the box. We’ll show you how to play MP3s and other restricted file formats in about four mouse clicks. The philosophy behind Ubuntu is that software should be free and accessible to all. Whether MP3 and other file formats are free is unclear in many countries, so Ubuntu does not include software to read these file formats by default. Fortunately, it does include a package that installs the most commonly used file formats all at once, including a Flash plugin for Firefox. Note: These instructions are for Ubuntu 10.04. There are small differences for earlier versions of Ubuntu. Play MP3 Files Open the Ubuntu Software Center, found in the Applications menu.   Click on View and ensure that All Software is selected. Type “restricted extras” into the search box at the top-right. Find the Ubuntu restricted extras package and click Install. Enter your password when prompted. Once the install is complete, close out of Ubuntu Software Center, and you’ll be able to play MP3 files! To confirm this, we’ll open up Rhythmbox, found in the Sound & Video section of the Applications menu. Our test MP3 plays with no problems! Note: If Rhythmbox tells you that MP3 plugins are not installed, close Rhythmbox and reopen it. You should not have to install anything extra through Rhythmbox.   Despite this extra step, playing the most common audio and video file formats – including Flash videos on the internet – is simple. All the software comes installed, you just have to teach them how to read your files.     Delegation using the ActAs approach has some interesting security features A security token service can make authorization and validation checks before issuing the ActAs token. Combined with proof keys you get non-repudiation features. The ultimate receiver sees the original caller as direct caller and can optionally traverse the delegation chain. Encryption and audience restriction can be tied down Most samples out there (including the SDK sample) use the CreateChannelActingAs extension method from WIF to request ActAs tokens. This method builds on top of the WCF binding configuration which may not always be suitable for your situation. You can also use the WSTrustChannel to request ActAs tokens. This allows direct and programmatic control over bindings and configuration and is my preferred approach. The below method requests an ActAs token based on a bootstrap token.   • SSIS Catalog, Windows updates and deployment failures due to System.Core mismatch

    This is a heads-up for anyone doing development on SSIS. On my current project where we are implementing a SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 solution we recently encountered a situation where we were unable to deploy any of our projects even though we had successfully deployed in the past. Any attempt to use the deployment wizard resulted in this error dialog: The text of the error (for all you search engine crawlers out there) was: A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user-defined routine or aggregate "create_key_information": System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) ---> System.IO.FileLoadException: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) System.IO.FileLoadException: System.IO.FileLoadException:     at Microsoft.SqlServer.IntegrationServices.Server.Security.CryptoGraphy.CreateSymmetricKey(String algorithm)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.IntegrationServices.Server.Security.CryptoGraphy.CreateKeyInformation(SqlString algorithmName, SqlBytes& key, SqlBytes& IV) . (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 6522) After some investigation and a bit of back and forth with some very helpful members of the SSIS product team (hey Matt, Wee Hyong) it transpired that this was due to a .Net Framework fix that had been delivered via Windows Update. I took a look at the server update history and indeed there have been some recently applied .Net Framework updates: This fix had (in the words of Matt Masson) “somehow caused a mismatch on System.Core for SQLCLR” and, as you may know, SQLCLR is used heavily within the SSIS Catalog. The fix was pretty simple – restart SQL Server. This causes the assemblies to be upgraded automatically. If you are using Data Quality Services (DQS) you may have experienced similar problems which are documented at Upgrade SQLCLR Assemblies After .NET Framework Update. I am hoping the SSIS team will follow-up with a more thorough explanation on their blog soon. You DBAs out there may be questioning why Windows Update is set to automatically apply updates on our production servers. I read a little about, maybe the sata enabled on the bios. What is the problem and can it be fixed or do I have to remove xubuntu.
