• Is there a registry key change that will by-pass the Windows Domain Join Welcome page?

  I'm scripting some Windows Server 2008 R2 builds using Power Shell. Some software needs to be installed after the server has joined the domain. Since I want to automate everything, I'm looking to by-pass the domain controllers Welcome page using a registry hack script. I work for a large company and the Active Directory people are unwilling to change group policy. I figure if it's a registry key I can script the change, install the software, replace the key and reboot as the final step. Is there a registry key change that will by-pass the Domain Join Welcome page?

• Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard: Locks MS Office files, but not Adobe .AI and .PSD files?

  We have some shares setup on a Windows 2003 R2 server, and the MS Office files people save behave properly: The first person to open the file gets read/write, and the second person to open the file while the first person still has the file open, gets a read-only version. This is not true for the graphics files, like Adobe Illustrator .AI files, and Photoshop .PSD files. Anyone who goes to open these files has full read/write, even if someone else is already working on the file! This has lead to numerous file corruption issues, as well as other lost work, since it always saves the last changes to the file. How do we get Windows to properly lock these files so when someone is working on a file, and someone else wants to open one, they get read-only access? Many thanks, Bruce

  I set up a website with my own custom PHP code. It appears that people from places like Ukraine are trying to hack it. They're trying a bunch of odd accesses, seemingly to detect what PHP files I've got. They've discovered that I have PHP files called mail.php and sendmail.php, for instance. They've tried a bunch of GET options like: http://mydomain.com/index.php?do=/user/register/ http://mydomain.com/index.php?app=core&module=global§ion=login http://mydomain.com/index.php?act=Login&CODE=00 I suppose these all pertain to something like LiveJournal? Here's what's odd, and the subject of my question. They're trying this URL: http://mydomain.com?3e3ea140 What kind of website is vulnerable to a 32-bit hex number?

He started off in a rather confusing who’s on first fashion.  It seems that one of his tester was originally supposed to give the talk, but then it was decided that it would be better to have someone who does development present a testing topic.  This didn’t hinder the content of the talk in the least.  He broke the process down in a logical manner that would be straight forward to understand if not implement. Francis hit the main areas we usually think of such as tombstoning, network connectivity and asynchronous code, but he approached them with tools they we may not have thought of until now.  He relied heavily on Fiddler to intercept and change the behavior of network requests. • can't add sharepoint users from trusted domain

  I have a very strange problem with our Sharepoint 2007 implementation. I went in today to grant access to a user and was greeted with "The user does not exist or is not unique." Let me start off by saying that this user is not on our domain we have a 2 way trust connecting to one of our subsidiaries. I can see the users in the people pick but can't add them into Sharepoint. This problem flared up after we had some trust issues last two days ago. So I must ask has anyone came across this error and if so what steps did you take to resolve it? • Can't find my.cnf on my VPS

  Ok i am a total noob when it comes to servers (but eager to learn). I am renting a VPS so i can host a magento store. The VPS is using Centos5 and DirectAdmin and XEN virtualization. I've read a bit about how to optimize magento and one suggestion is to edit 'my.cnf'. However i can't find this file anywhere from within DirectAdmin. I also can't connect to the VPS via console as my host has a console access via their website but it won't let me enter my root password it just hangs...(how do people normally connected to their linux VPS?) Please help? ThankYou.

• Better way to stop/start Webmin and SSH

  Hi, it would be a good idea to not have webmin running all the time... just start it via ssh when I need it... so, I just stop webmin,and leaving SSH always running... when I need to access webmin, I start it through SSH. but there are lots of people from many country trying to bruteforce my SSH. I can reduce bruteforce using iptables. but because Im feeling still not safe (about 3 months ago), so I stop SSH and leaving webmin always running through custom port. I just start SSH through webmin when I need. and the result, no more bruteforce on SSH, and no bruteforce on webmin (maybe because the attacker dont know my webmin custom port) but I think this is still not really safe. and I cannot restrict access to some IP because I use random IP. If I stop both SSH and webmin, I will lost access to my server. Anyone know the better way dealing with this?

• My first encounter with SmartAssembly

  Let me start by writing I am a supreme VB6 programmer, but I have very little experience with VB.Net, so I think I still need some more time learning SmartAssembly. SmartAssembly make obfuscating and merging dll files a piece of cake! With it's simple, straight forward and clean GUI I did make my tests work. With other obfuscators like Xenocode, Salamander etc which lets you (and in some cases forces you) control more advanced settings, you really have to know what you are doing. Especially when it comes to protecting code that uses external dependencies. My most annoying experience is that if you start checking radio buttons and activating different obfuscating features in SmartAssembly, you will end up breaking your working code as well, if you like me is not that experienced and don't know what you’re doing. SmartAssembly have some troubleshooting information on their website which explains why the application will fail in some scenarios. So why not extend these checks in some deeper analyzing stage on the dll's? By doing that I think more people could get fully functional dll's out of the box instead of trying different settings and then test the protected dll and see if it's working or not. //Peter

  For slightly complicated reasons we tend to give people console access to VMs via the webui. This has worked fine in the past, however when the users update their client machines to Windows 7 (or Vista, I am told, although I have not tested that), then the console fails to work. On IE8, having allowed the ActiveX control, the tab causes a "Internet Explorer has stopped working" dialog. On Firefox 3.5 , once the plugin has been installed, using the console causes the browser to crash. I've updated to the most recent VC 2.5 release, and ESX 3.5u5. Anyone else seeing this? Any clues how to get round it (other than using the fat client). Nigel.

• Conky - How to get weather alerts using rss?

  Quick question about how to get weather alerts with conky. I'm using the following bit of code: ${execpi 3600 ~/.conky/scripts/conky-rss.sh "http://www.weather.gov/alerts/wwarssget.php?zone=MDZ006"|sed '1,3d'|fold -sw 62} This (correctly) display a message to the effect "There are no weather alerts for ...." when there are no weather alerts. However, when there is an alert, it simply displays a message like "Short-term forecast for ..." with no further information. Any suggestions? How are other people getting weather alert info in their conkys?

• Why i can not load a simple pixel shader effect (. fx) file in xna?

  I just want to load a simple *.fx file into my project to make a (pixel shader) effect. But whenever I try to compile my project, I get the following error in visual studio Error List: Errors compiling .. ID3DXEffectCompiler: There were no techniques ID3DXEffectCompiler: Compilation failed I already searched on google and found many people with the same problem. And I realized that it was a problem of encoding. With the return lines unrecognized '\ n' . I tried to copy and paste to notepad and save as with ASCII or UTF8 encoding. But the result is always the same. Do you have an idea please ? • Unable to configure Rails with readline

  1) ./configure --prefix=$HOME/.packages --with-readline-dir=$HOME/.packages 2) configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-readline-dir I am trying to setup the most up-to-date version of Rails on my webhost (I do not have sudo access). Line 1 is the configure command I used for Ruby and Line 2 is the first printed line after executing 'configure'. I've googled this issue and found other people with the same problem but there aren't any real solutions. There are no warnings or errors when configuring/compiling readline-6.1. I am pretty stumped, any help/insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.

• mod_proxy security

  I'm on Debian Lenny using apache2. in my proxy.conf I tried adding Allow from localhost as suggested in some other forums to get proxying to work. Didn't work. It only worked if I say Allow from all My question is this. Are there any security implications to this Allow from all directive? Most people were saying to make this as limited as possible, but "all" is the client right? I want anyone regardless of their IP to be forwarded properly. Is there a better way to configure this?

  With the old Windows Start menu, you could add the Control Panel as a menu or a drop-down list. With Windows 8, you can pin the Control Panel to the Start Screen and taskbar but first you need to know where it is. One of the chief complaints about Windows 8 (or any new version of Microsoft’s operating system) is “where did such-and-such go?” With Windows 8, when MS removed the Start button and Start Menu, it threw a lot of people for a loop. Because the Start Menu was like an old familiar hang out; one of those places that no matter how it changed over the years, it was a fairly reliable place to find stuff whether it was your Documents folder, Devices, Printers, the ability to search your programs and files, and of course, the Control Panel. • Web authentication using LDAP and Apache?

  I am working on a project of setting up a web administered inventory database for my work (or if they don't want it then i'll enjoy learning about it) and hit the problem of allowing only authorized users to access the website (In its testing/development phase, I allow all people to navigate to the website to add entries to the database and query it). I am trying to make it so only particular users in the domain (Active Directory) are allowed to access the website after they are queried about their credentials. I read that Apache (I am using a LAMP server) has a means of asking visitors to the website to provide LDAP credentials in order to gain access to the site, but I wasn't sure if that was exactly what I was looking for. If anyone has experience in the LDAP configurations for Apache that I mentioned or any other means of securely authenticating with websites I would greatly appreciate advice or a direction to go Thank you!

• Exalogic&ndash;The One Day Installation Challenge

  It’s a really exciting time for the extended WebLogic community as we are enjoying seeing the impressive results of Exalogic deployments.  At Oracle Open World, a lot of people I spoke with came away impressed with the raw performance.  However, Exalogic offers a lot more than just raw performance.  I had the pleasure of working with Ram Sivaram during one of the Exalogic training sessions in Santa Clara.  In this video diary, he shows the Exalogic machine arrive on the shipping dock, get unpacked, wired up, powered on, configured, and installed with a WebLogic Server cluster in just about 10 hours.  I’ve worked with customers in the past that have taken several weeks or longer to get an environment ready after the hardware arrives.  This typically involves many different specialized teams in their organization.  Mohamad Afshar just wrote a great explanation of the benefit of Engineered Systems and contrasting that to the status quo.  Being able to streamline deployment of middleware capacity will have a lot of value for customers shortening time to deployment.  Thanks for the video Ram, you’ve set a high bar, we’ll see if anyone can top your time!

• Light Voip and IM server for small teams

  So I have a small group that would need a self hosted Im/voip and possibly video conferencing solution. My goal is for a small group of people (no more than 40) to be able to collaborate within a local area network. I need something that is self hosted, so unfortunately outside solutions like Skype and hosted Lync would not work. I'm looking for something that would allow both one on one, and group communication, so and IRC server would not work. I'm hopefully looking for something that does not require multiple servers, or is too complex to set up. As a student, I have a license of Lync 2013, but setting that up on a single server without active directory is practically impossible. Would Lync 2010 be easier to do on a single server? Are there any other good solutions? Thanks

• Licensing a JavaScript library

  I am developing a free, open-source (duh) JavaScript library, and wondering how to license it. I was considering the GNU GPL, but I heard that I must distribute the license with the software, and I'm not sure anymore. I would like the library to be available much like jQuery: In a free, downloadable script, preferably in either original or minified form. Am I mistaken about the GNU GPL license terms? jQuery is dual licensed under GNU GPL or MIT licenses. How does the GPL apply to single script files like that? Can I license my library with nothing more than a few sentences in the script file? Is there another license that better suits my needs? What would be nice is a license that allows you to put the URL in the source, for people to read if they want. I don't know that many do, unless I am mistaken. I am generally looking to release the library as free software like the GPL specifies, but don't want to have to force licensees to download the full license unless they wish to read it.

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. • Value of the HTML5 lang attribute

  I'm working on a website which will offer localized content following the language+region approach as described on this W3.org page (e.g. fr-CA for Canadian French content, and fr-FR for "French French" content). As we consider content for each language+region to be unique, it is crucial to us that search engines properly identify and serve the content accordingly. By looking up on the Internet (e.g. this question), it appears that most people recommend the use of an ISO639 language code in the HTML lang attribute to describe the content language. Following this recommendation, we would en up using <html lang="fr"> which wouldn't enable the differentiation between the aforementioned language+region combinations. When reviewing the HTML4 specification, it seems that using language+region as a language code would be perfectly OK, as the en-US example is given as one possible value. However I couldn't find any confirmation of this in the HTML5 specification which doesn't seem to provide any example as to the possible allowed values. From there I tried to get a de facto answer by looking at what the web giants are doing. • Large File Uploads? SWFUpload?

  So, we offer video services and have run into an issue with people uploaded large file sources. I realized that our developer was utilizing php HTTP uploads to handle this and that was causing the slow times & breakdowns. Now, they keep coming at me wanting to use SWFUpload, quoting it is utilized by YouTube, but I'm adamantly against it because -- well, flash. However, I don't really know of a -better- solution that works across all browsers. So I was wondering SWFUpload, which hasn't been updated in a year, is really the viable solution?
