• C#. Struct design. Why 16 byte is recommended size?

  I read Cwalina book (recommendations on development and design of .NET apps). He says that good designed struct has to be less than 16 bytes in size (for performance purpose). My questions is - why exactly is this? And (more important) can I have larger struct with same efficiency if I run my .NET 3.5 (soon to be .NET 4.0) 64-bit application on i7 under Win7 x64 (is this limitation CPU / OS based)? Just to stress again - I need as efficient struct as it is possible. I try to keep it in stack all the time, the application is heavily multi-threaded and runs on sub-millisecond intervals, the current size of the struct is 64 byte.

• Get n Number of words using regex in Java

  I have a section of a book, complete with punctuation, line breaks etc. and I want to be able to extract the first n words from the text, and divide that into 5 parts. Regex mystifies me. This is what I am trying.   Hi, i'm not sure to explain what i'm looking for. What's the name of the "source code parser" for publish code, in HTML ? For example, when i write some source code here in stack overflow, system auto-detect the sintax and write "correct" source code in html. I've noticed that exists the HTML <"code" tag, but it simply write source code in "courier" font. So i'm asking you if exists some "external" component that, given a text, parse it out correctly in a HTML page. Thank you!

• FFT in MATLAB: wrong 0Hz frequency

  Hello I want to use fft in MATLAB to analize some exprimental data saved as an excell file. my code: A=xlsread('Book.xls'); G=A'; x=G(2, : ); N=length(x); F=[-N/2:N/2-1]/N; X = abs(fft(x-mean(x),N)) X = fftshift(X); plot(F,X) But it plots a graph with a large 0Hz wrong component, my true frequency is about 395Hz and it is not shown in the plotted graph. Please tell me what is wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I need to be able to have the user input a number to shift the encryption by, such as 4: e.g. 'A' to 'E'. The user also needs to input the string to be translated. The book says to use a zip() to do the problem. I am confused on how I would do this though. • How do you detect an area that can be filled in in a bitmap in ActionScript 3?

  I am having a tough time figuring this out. I need to be able to detect a fill area for something similar to a coloring book picture. The user will click inside the area that needs to be filled. The image is user created bitmap content and so the fill area must be detected at runtime. Any help would be tremendously appreciated! • How to resize pdf graphics produced in R using Illustrator

  I am making plots in R using the pdf() command. Graphs look perfect and resize nicely in Acrobat Reader. My usual workflow includes manipulating labels etc. in Illustrator, saving as .eps for submission to publishers or inserting in Word. All works fine for single graphs. Now I am trying to combine 4 graphs into one by manually putting them together in an A4 Illustrator document. However, when I resize the standard 7x7 inches pdf graph in Illustrator to fit in one column of an A4 page (ca 3.4 inches wide), all proportions get screwed up, e.g. lines and symbols outlines become way too thick. Using pdf(..., width=3.4, height=3.4) in R messes up all the symbol and font sizes so carefully chosen to produce the original graph. Why can't I resize the graph within Illustrator the same way I can resize the pdf e.g. in Acrobat Reader?

I never developed in Objective-C, have no idea about cocoa, Xcode, NIB and similar stuff. I don't want to learn by slapping examples together though. This would probably make things done, but I would not learn anything. I'd prefer a guided tutorial (or book) to go from zero to release on the web of the application.   Hello, I've been seing Func< for sometime now, and I've manage to avoid it (for now). But, now it looks like I can't dodge it forever. For instance, I tried Dynamic Linq, but almost everything was in terms of Func<. I've tried one of my book (C# 2008/Deitel&Deitel) and also MSDN but I'm not getting it yet. Let's say I have a super class Animal and few sub classes like Dog, Cat, Parrot, etc... Now I need to have a list of animals, my first thought would be something like: List<Animal> listAnimals Instead, my colleagues are recommending something like: List<? extends Animal> listAnimals Why should I use wildcards instead of simple generics? Let's say I need to have a get/set method, should I use the former or the later? How are they so different?

The repository is on cvsdude.com, the client is linux. I also use the subclipse plugin that caches the password ok. I vaguely remember that when I started working with it, the command asked interactively if I wanted to save clear password, and I said no. Can this choice be stored somewhere and take precedence over the configuration? Thanks!

• Fitting place names into map shapes

  I'm drawing shapes using GDI+ using a list of lat/lon floats, and I need to place the name of the place within the borders of the polygon. Simply centering the text in the bounding rectangle doesn't work for irregular shapes. I have the text and the font so I can get the size of the rectangle that the text will need to fit in, but at that point I'm stuck. This seems like a common problem that all mapping software solves, as well as the kind of thing you would find in an algorithm or computer graphics textbook. So, given a list of floats for a polygon and a rectangle, is there a way to get the best possible point to place the text, using: 1) GDI+; 2) SQL Server Geospatial; or 3) c# code (or c, pseudocode, etc)

• How to center text in a select list

  I'm having trouble styling a select list in an html form. Basically I want it to have a font size of 12px, and a height of 30px; The problem is that the box is drawn to the right hight, but the text rendering varies in each browser. In FireFox it renders it in the top left corner. I want to vertically center the text. Anyone know of a way to do this or do I need to make something custom out of a ul? Thanks

  I'm trying to draw text on NSView subclass. I'm using an NSTextStorage, an NSLayoutManager, and an NSTextContainer.   A while ago, when I was learning Javascript, I studied Javascript: the good parts, and I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the bad and the ugly parts. Of course, I did not agree with everything, as summing up the design defects of a programming language is to a certain extent subjective - although, for instance, I guess everyone would agree that the keyword with was a mistake in Javascript. Nevertheless, I find it useful to read such reviews: even if one does not agree, there is a lot to learn. Is there a blog entry or some book describing design mistakes for Python? For instance I guess some people would count the lack of tail call optimization a mistake; there may be other issues (or non-issues) which are worth learning about.

This doesn't have to be terribly hard - I did the language that must not be named - but it will force you to learn a lot of the important parts of C. If you don't want to write a lexer and/or parser yourself, you can use lex/flex and yacc/bison, but if you plan on that you might want to start with a somewhat smaller project. I was kinda intrigued about the implementing a programming language answer and I'm wondering how do I go about starting this? I've gone through the whole K&R book and I've done some of the exercises as well. I also have a bit of experience in C++ and Java if that matters. Any tips? Thanks!

• How do I change the Unit:Characters in Matlab?

  For portability, I set the units of my GUIs to 'characters'. Now I have a user who wants to use Matlab on his netbook, and the GUI window is larger than the screen (and thus cropped at the top). I think I could try and write something in the openingFcn of the GUI that measures screen size and then adjusts the GUI accordingly, but I'd rather avoid that, because I then need to deal with text that is bigger than the text boxes, etc. What I'd rather like to do is somehow adjust the unit 'character' on his Matlab installation. None of the font sizes in the preferences seem to have an effect on unit:character, though. Does anyone know whether there's a setting for that, which can be changed from within Matlab (I don't mind if it's something that is reset at every reboot, since I can just put it into the startup script)?

While compiling file2.cpp, compiler leaves x as it is i.e doesn't allocate storage for it. 4. compiler allocates storage for y, but doesn't initialize it. 5. While linking file1.o and file2.o, now let file2.o is initialized first, so now: Does x gets initial value of 0? or doesn't get initialized?

So, I'm trying to do a sliding navigation UI from the left side of the screen (like a lot of mobile apps). The main content slides over, displaying the navigation menu beneath. Right now the browser thinks the screen is getting wider and introduces a horizontal scroll bar. However, I don't want that to happen... How do I get the div to animate off screen but not enlarge the width of the screen (i.e. keep it partially off screen)?
